Yeah, I think a great deal of virtual ink has been spilled musing on the best "pace".
I can only say what I've seen or heard. IMHO, the best advice I ever heard was to go at the pace of the fastest player. Well, usually two or three people are the fastest, but the gist is the same, that moving on is usually better than dwelling.
So, to, rare are the games that die for going too fast, but the board is littered with countless thousands of games that died for going too slow.
It seems like games need an alchemy of a good, fast DM, and at least two committed fast players, then in this fertile ground the rest of the game can grow.
And if you, as the DM are ready to move on and no one has had signification posts in 24 hours, then after moving on few can blame you.
After 48 hrs no one can. (Except on the weekends. =)
Just a note, because I forgot to mention before: I am using a homebrew crit/fumble chart, and it can result in some odd things, so be warned, your next attack may just not go the way you expected...

If I can survive to level 2 (and beyond), I can shapeshift which gives me free pools of temporary HP, so soaking damage will be my job.

Borak: When you are using fiendish vigor in a non-combat situation, or are out of combat for at least 30 seconds, you do not have to roll for it unless you want to. It can always count as if you rolled a 4.

Rook's main reason to say the group should scout, is to get them the heck oout of there before whatever terrible thing that is about to destroy the army does so. It was mostly a ruse to get the unit to follow him away from what he thinks is going to be a blood bath.
