but fails because they are struggling to fiercely.

and succeeds!

The target now has the pinned condition.

Caladrel: You sense magic from the general area that Mabs is struggling.

Results of 1 round of detect magic

Fey: You can hear the creature that mabs is struggling with try to break free of her grasp...

Break Grapple Check: 1d20 ⇒ 2

and it fails as it can't get a grip on her (or so you think... you can't see it...).

Varian's Turn.

Attack Roll: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23

"Careful, Mabs, I'd rather not anger a witch if I can help it," she says as she waits a second before striking.

Attack (2 hands): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
Damage: 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13

I think that kills him.

If it wasn't pinned... you would have been one away from its actual AC... but yes, you kill it! ^_^

@ Raseri: Your sword connects with something solid and blood stains the snow.

A dead, winter-touched Atomie appears in the snow with Mabs still clutching it in her talons.

Mabs seems out of breath as she gets up off the corpse and and wipes her claws off in the snow, "I sensed something peculiar... sorry I couldn't give much more warning..." Mabs take a moment, looks to Raseri and says,"Thanks Hun..." She walks over to the Stag and starts to study it, "It seems that that fey was was spying on us... that's why it didn't attack us while it was hidden. It might have tried to figure out our weaknesses and the purpose of your... 'quest.' I think we need to pay attention to more than just 'fey' out here."

Mabs still seems very tired and isn't making any move to continue at the moment.

So... end of this encounter! Oh, if anybody's wondering about Mab's Sensing ability, I'll just say its simply akin to a constant detect magic.

Open Character dialogue/actions till I get the next map up. Have at it ^_^

Edit: Oh, also your trek is getting a little later in the day (not quite night yet) and the snow is getting even heavier (at this point it starts to affect your general visibility if in combat and making perception checks). Just a warning/questioning what you guys want to do about it.

"It is getting late, but it'd be a shame to let game go to waste," she says as she turns to the others, "At least some good will come of this cold. The meat and hide should keep long enough for us to complete our quest. Would any of you like to help? The work is quick, but with help it goes faster."

The northerner pulls out a coil of rope and begins tying one end around the dead stag's hind legs. That done she weights the other end with a rock and hurls it over a sturdy branch. She hauls the carcass up until the neck is about eyes level. She then slits its throat and lets the blood flow out as she goes back to the rope and hauls the bleeding carcass up high enough to be out of reach of wolves and bears.

Turning to Mabs, "You might know the area better, do know of a reasonable safe place to bed down for the night?"

"There aren't many caves or dens around here... there might be a thicker copse of trees around here though..." Mabs hops up and over to Raseri's shoulder and points in a direction to the side of the trail.

"It should be in that direction."

The ulfen woman trudges along, her eyes open and searching, but her mind was back at the hearth of her family's home in Kalsgard.

"I do not trust witches nor their cold fey servants, Mabs, but I am not so foolish as to not trust someone that is proving they are worthy of it," She says softly, her mind recalling the tales of horror from those long frozen nights when winter storms howled, "I do not like this sudden winter. I fear it is an ill omen, that Baba Yaga's hordes of trolls and beasts and witches will soon cover all of the world in an eternal winter."

Raseri's eyes are flat and bleak as she keeps looking for shelter form the coming night. Her words are like a solemn chant as she continues.

"Our quest is to free one held in bondage, but I fear that even if we succeed in that, it will be for naught as the frost lays thick on the ground and slowly kills all but those who are able to survive the harsh winter of Irrisen."

Upon hearing Raseri say this, Caladrel cautiously moves away toward the rear of the group that Raseri is leading. Caladrel address Grandma Mable, who is most likely last in the group... due to her handicap, "That Raseri is a tough cookie. Might be a while, to get through to her that not all of us witches are evil. Just like not all raging heathens of the warrior tribes are, well... heathens. It's an understandable discrimination, especially given recent events; but, there are good and evil forms of all types of people." Caladrel turns his attention to Mable's pack. "I could really go for a cookie. Got any left in there?"

Wow, Raseri... I'm at a loss for words... Nice roleplaying. The Robed figure claps his hands together in applause - *Clap, clap, clap!*

Mabs seems to get more comfortable and rested as you move on, "Your mistrust of such things isn't misplaced, however. More often than not, those who make pacts of power and knowledge are corrupt by it. Witches, no matter the kind make those pacts and it takes strong individuals and a silver tongue in pact making to not be corrupted by your patron's whims... Your friend over there might just be one such individual, though I know not what he serves," she says pointing over to Caladrel.

"As of Baba Yaga... I don't know if she is behind this. Baba has been content with her many long years of rule for a few centuries now... and She's late from her travels this year I hear... No one has heard from her and no one has seen her yet... which is troubling... Mabs says a little nervously.

With a sigh, Mabs looks away from you, "But, back to what I was getting at... Yes, I am a crow, a beast if you will, but much more than that. I am a Witchcrow... and since you trust me I will trust you and your friends..." Mabs then looks back at you locking one of her eyes with yours, "You might have not heard of my kind since we rarely leave certain parts of Irrisen and we aren't very common to begin with. Most of us are deceitful and feed off of the misery and chaos we bring to others. We also collect items of great worth as a natural tendency, but sometimes to hurt others through us having the object..." she then looks away from you again.

"I am what you might call a very rare exception... Because of the hatred other races feel for us, most of us don't live very long, but I have lived for a very long time... I will not tell you that I have not sinned in my long life but my age has taught me many things. One thing I have learned is that misery caused begets misery..." she says trembling.

"I no longer enjoy the suffering of others... but I can't entirely stop what I am... So, I collect objects of importance and value. Things that interest me because of their history or their sparkly allure... magical or not. That is why I want the ring... That's why I must have it." She then looks back at you, shiny eyes full of true grief and sorrow.

As she ends her explanation, Raseri notices the copse of trees Mabs must have been talking about - A ring of trees form an almost perfect roof, only letting a little snow in from the fall. The site almost seems unnatural, yet interesting and beautiful as the trees are ringed in almost a perfect circle. One tree has multiple ax marks on its trunk and multiple branches chopped off from the lower boughs, with an ax sticking out from its side. The boughs must have been puts to use, as you can see some of them lining the side, forming a better shelter.

A boot is sticking out from underneath it, but no sound or movement is coming from it.

"I see," Raseri says, her eyes looking over the copse of trees. She is about to say something else when she spies the mutilated tree.

"Wait here, something doesn't feel right," she whispers to the others as she pulls out her axe and carefully moves forward. She keeps her eyes open, hoping that the person under the shelter is alright and she's just feeling anxious.

Once she gets closer, she tries to carefully move the boot. seeing if it is attached to anything or if its owner wakes up.

Obviously, if it's a trap, she's going to leave it alone, she's foolhardy, not stupid.

The area doesn't looked trapped or set for an ambush. The limb the boot is attached to feels stiff and you can see the outline of someone laying on top of boughs, underneath the foliage. He doesn't appear to be moving and you don't hear breathing coming from the prone body.

If You Move the Branches Aside:
You see the frozen corpse of someone you don't recognize. He appears to be slightly underdressed for the weather and frozen in a huddled position, seemingly trying to get warm before dying. Right next to him on a bare patch of ground is what looks like an attempt to build a friction fire with no success.

Grandma Mable joins Raseri and says a pray to send this stranger on his way.

All the stranger has on his person worth mentioning is a silver ring with a common inlaid garnet and a printed mythril coin with the words "To My Love" in common engraved upon it on one side and "Grif" on the other.

Raseri succeeds at both creating a fire and a simple but protective shelter, however she does notice that it was difficult to get the first flames started, as if the dry wood was resisting catching fire for some reason.

Don't suppose Ras would know of a reason for that, such as it's from a Dryad's tree or something like that?

Nope, she wouldn't, though she's pretty sure its just plain, dry wood. Anyone can make a Knowledge (Nature) or (Arcana) check if they want to make sure, but it seems the wood itself isn't the cause...

"Very curious results, I'm not sure what to make of this. My understanding is..."

Caladrel will reveal any results to the party.

Results of Caladrel's Inquiry:
The magic that is spreading out from the Border Wood is doing more than just making it snow and spreading cold like a "normal" season, it's literally sucking heat out of the area. It is this property of the magic that is resisting any heat being added within its influence and why readily warm bodies that could survive for more prolonged amounts of time in the unnatural weather are getting hypothermia and freezing faster.

Magic this powerful has to be undone at its source, though you haven't a clue yet how one might do that without studying the central cause.

Oops... I also forgot, does anyone not have magical protection or an ability that protects against the weather perchance? If you don't, please make check as described in the campaign info... though I think everyone seems pretty good I'll check again.

"Tja, ser du. En häxa får hans / hennes gåvor genom gemenskap med en osynlig enhet, vanligtvis kallas en beskyddare. Varje beskyddare är unik och kan eller inte kan skänka sin makt på häxan. It's through this that I receive my magic, and sometimes 'the powerful one' sees fit to provide me a glimpse into the future. Although he doesn't usually 'speak' directly to me, the cards reveal his knowledge to me." Caladrel eyes clear from a glaze, he shakes his head and looks at Raseri, "I'm sorry to babble on. To answer your question, the language you keep hearing is the native tongue of my patron."

@ Caladrel: I'm going to assume 5 Cards for a "quick-draw" harrowing. If that's not what you are doing, disregard the spoiler...

The Cards Revealed in Order:
The Empty Throne (Reversed), The Mute Hag, The Juggler (Reversed), The Avalanche, and The Paladin.

Sevante also offers his services for the next watch, though like his other spellcasting counterparts, he's going to need enough sleep for his extracts tomorrow.

Varian might also offer his services for the watch after that.

Anything else for the night guys?

Just one more thing,

Raseri shivers as Caladrel explains how he communicates with his patron.

"It reminds me of the Fey's tongue, but darker, twisted," she tells him Skald, "Are you certain you can trust this patron of yours?"

Feel free to move on though, I can always flex time this.

"Can one trust anything? Especially forces and beings you don't fully understand? All I can say, is the powerful one chose me as his vessel. When, and if I am betrayed, I will still thank him for the magnificent knowledge and power he has shown me. Until then, I have no reason NOT to trust him?"

Alright, if there is nothing else, without further ado, let's continue.

The night passes without incident, the forest strangely quiet except for the sounds of heavy snowfall and the sharp crackling of the tended bright flame. Dim sunlight starts to stream through the clouds and into the world of white, the snow becoming very deep all around, with nothing to disturb it except for your fellow adventurers' movement of sleep and rounds of watch.

As the the world becomes brighter, the silence becomes periodically broken by the far of cawing of a crow and sudden avalanches of snow falling from nearby trees. Everyone wakes up rested and refreshed, barely cold due to the fire and the makeshift shelter.

Those who "memorize" spells may do so now and wounds are healed normally for a full nights sleep. I will choose Sevante's and Varian's spell listing for the day in a little bit unless they put in some input.

After a quiet time for morning prayers, Grandma smiles and prepares some nice hot porridge for breakfast.
"Is anyone hungry for a nice warm breakfast?"

"Of course a warm meal would be wonderful. I must consult the cards anyway, before we carry on." Caladrel chants a bit in Infernal and conducts a harrowing. "Let's see if the fates have changed since last night."

Unless y'all think we could use a couple extra cure light wounds, Caladrel will prepare 2 x cause fear.

@ Caladrel: Even though you shuffle your cards thoroughly, the same result pops up. (Not that his is surprising to you, as your patron has done so in the past, insistently trying to get a point across)

The smell of warm food drifts through the makeshift camp, causing everyone to realize how hungry they were after yesterday's skirmishes. Mabs sits in one of the trees overhead looking incredibly worn, but awake, keeping watch over the campsite and it's inhabitants.

She has yet to speak a word to anyone this morning, but seems to be thinking something over, mumbling a few words to herself.

"A hot meal and some hot tea sounds good right now," Raseri says as she gets up and stretches. The cold air turning her nose and cheeks pink.

Grandma looks up at Mabs and pulls out some bread.
"Mabs are you hungry?"

Mabs stops mumbling to herself and alights on Mable's shoulder, "That would be wonderful dear, thank you."

"Where did you learn to cook again, Mable? You are very adept. Is it from disciplined instruction in the culinary arts? Random experimentation? Or natural talent?"

"Oh so sweet! I learned to cook in the temple where I was raised. I could either eat the food that was served to learn to cook myself.

He he that old man did try to cook if you want to call it that. He was more in to drinking than cooking I am afraid."

"Mother used to put snowberries in hers. It turned everything pink, but it was delicious," Raseri says in-between spoonfuls, "I've got some recipes from my family that I can share with you if you don't mind teaching me how to cook. Last time I tried it, I was banned from meal duty."

"A barbarian chef? Seems a bit out of place. The people I'm travelling with here, never seem to lack an extra depth of character that you would not expect." Caladrel responds, "I never would have suspected you to have an interest in food preparation, Raseri. What other deeply hidden secrets are you hiding?"

"One of the reasons I came here was to learn new things," Raseri says with a laugh, "As for my secrets, well, I could tell you, but I'd like to see if any of you can guess what other talent I have besides being able to swing a great, big sword."

A sly grin spreads on her face, and the possibility that she has some fey in her line somewhere becomes very hard to ignore.
