The sleepy village of Heldren has rarely seen so much excitement or concern. Hunters from the nearby Border Wood speak of unnaturally cold weather at the height of summer that descended on the forest just days ago. Heavy snow followed, and those who returned spoke of an uneasy presence in the woods, as well as new, dangerous predators. No one knows what this event means, but the town's soothsayer, Old Mother Theodora, claims dark times lie ahead.

As if in proof of that dire prophecy, a badly wounded mercenary arrived in town yesterday, claiming to be a bodyguard of Lady Argentea Malassene. He told the village council that the noblewoman's escort came under attack by bandits and strange, wintry creatures near the edge of the Border Wood. He alone escaped, and Lady Argentea was dragged away into the forest. Now the townsfolk cast fearful eyes toward the snowy forest, worried what else might emerge to threaten their peaceful village.

Many villagers walk out in the open today, some talking in hushed whispers amongst themselves and others talking more openly with each other their concerns about the Border Wood and the strange creatures therein. You five are the town's heroes. Many of you call the town of Heldren home and some of you are new arrivals to the small distant village, but all of you have helped the village in some manner befitting the title.

Today is a day of fright and sorrow for the village and many speak of leaving the the small settlement to get away from the creatures and the spreading frost and snow, while other more stubborn personas of the village talk of gathering arms in defense of their remote home. Ionna Teppen, head of the village council, has asked you 5 to find out what has become of Lady Argentea Malassene and to get to the bottom of whats causing the strange weather phenomenon (For your trouble, the council has agreed to compensate you on behalf of the village). Councilor Teppen also suggests that if you Heroes accept this responsibility, that you should go talk with Yuln Oerstag, the wounded mercenary, as to what has befallen the Lady Argentea and to get an idea of what you are up against.

What say you Heroes of Heldren? Will you help your village home in it's time of need?

Hi guys and welcome to the Reign of Winter AP. To start things off, if you guys would like to gather information about the weird happenstances and current events, you can either talk with the villagers using a Diplomacy check or Use Knowledge (Local) to find out some information about whats happening around the village nowadays. Besides that, you can move around town and do what ever suits you at the moment, but it would help if you guys stay relatively together for now at least, please and thank you.

It doesn't take much to be considered a hero here. Sevante muses as the town drunk regales him a third time with the story of the fifty gold pieces he found in the road.

The burly-looking half-elf had come to town just before the snows following the pattern he'd predicted. Howevern before he had a chance to investigate the woods, people with severe frostbite and other winter related wounds started drifting into town. Seeing not only the people in need but also a chance to gather information, Sevante soon put his expertise in winter weather to work helping a Grandma Mable in patching (and sometimes amputating) people up. The young man then started giving lessons in how to protect oneself from bitter cold and other useful advice. It was a blessing in disguise though as he'd almost run out of coin the last town back and being a 'hero' helped net him free room and board...

Realizing the man next to him had finished his story and was staring sorrowfully into his empty mug, Sevante makes a quick calculation about drink prices and how much money he has. He then pipes up, "Here why don't I refill that for you... Say you haven't heard anything about the Lady Argentea have you?..."

Grandma Mable's Roll Result:
What you've gathered from the villagers is that not many know (or many don't wish to speak) about the creatures that now exist in the Border Wood, but you have overheard some hearsay about Lady Argentea: Two weeks ago, Lady Argentea Malassene traveled past Heldren on her way from Oppara to Zimar to meet her betrothed. Rumor has it the two didn't get along and Lady Argentea caused a scandal by calling off the engagement and returning home. Some even think that her disappearance might be related.

Raseri had laughed off the rumors of snow in the Borderwood when she first heard them. This was Taldor, land of warm summers and mild winters. She could walk around in not but her smallclothes in winter and feel nary a chill. Obviously the hunters and woodsmen had been nipping while out and about their business.

Until people started showing up pale as death with the black of frostbite on their fingers, toes, and noses. Until a fellow Ulfen had rode in, nearly frozen to death.

She doesn't laugh now. She'd seen what happened to men who had suffered Winter's venom. Not all of them survived the ordeal. She strides into the healing house and looks around.

"Hvar er--" she begins before shaking her head and starting over in Taldane, "Where is Yuln Oerstag? I need to... ah, Hvað er orðið? Speak? Já það er það. I need to speak with him."

Caladrel appears from his small tent decorated by a hand written sign at it's base, Fortune Telling carefully painted by hand on a small plank of wood, complete with arrow pointing to the open entrance flap.

"What's all the commotion?" He wanders inquisitively to a crowd of villagers. Caladrel tries to make sense of the many conversations. He carefully moves among the crowd, occasionally nudging the villager next to him with his elbow softly. "What did I miss? What has happened?" Following each answer with a follow up question, "Peculiar events, have you ever heard of such things before?" or "What do you think is causing this?"

Caladrel makes sure to finish each line of questions with a reassurance that the towns champions will find a solution. If any of the random villiagers provides any unique info, he will ask more specific questions trying to gather as much insight as he can.

If anyone provides similar knowledge to what was in Grandma Mable's spoiler, Caladrel will see if he can divine any information about Lady Argentea Malassene betrothed. Name, reputation, associations, ect.

if no one mentions Lady Argentea Malassene, then Caladrel doesn't know what was contained in the spoiler.. yet. Thus he doesn't know to ask about her, and disregard the following.

"Why do you think the two didn't get along? Did one of the 2 stand to gain more from the union than the other? Was this expectation of the marriage looked at by people as positive or negative?"

Nice touch with the language switch Raseri. Sevante and Mable are also there helping tend to the wounded. Because there is no official healing house, the Silver Stoat, the town's only tavern, serves to house the few wounded. I'll have a map posted in roll 20 once I have something set up.

@ Raseri, Sevante and Mable:

The Silver Stoat, normally the most warm and homey place in Heldren, has many of it's few rooms taken up by the injured and dying. Many of the patients have blackened appendages and the more unlucky ones are missing whole limbs to frostbite. Argus Goldtooth, the resident barber and sometimes practiced surgeon, is currently making his rounds, seeing what limbs can be saved through magic and medicine and what others must be amputated, while Elder Safander, Heldren's High village priest, tries to save as many as he can through his healing arts.

@ Raseri:

A big, bearded man raises his bandaged arm in your direction, "Aye, over here. What can this... beaten old mercenary do ya for?"

Bandages cover most of Yuln's body and part of his face. As to what you can see of his flesh, most of it seems to be covered in small lacerations and randomly spotted frostbite. His nose is also split across the ridge and is blackened by the affliction. He puts on a hearty smile when you come closer and he tries to prop himself up on one arm with no success and a great deal of pain.

@ Caladrel Wintergrasp:

Caladrel's Roll Result:
You do in fact receive the same information as Mable but it seems information as to who the betrothed was or to the details of the engagement hasn't reached the ears of the villagers. However, you do gain some hearsay about a group of rangers in the Border Wood called the High Sentinels. They usually keep bandit activity curbed, but for some reason they're doing a poor job of it of late. How else could brigands attack a well-armed caravan and abduct Lady Argentea.

@ Varian: Sorry... who are you talking to? The Villagers or Yuln?

Sorry it took me a while, but the post timed out before I could put it up and I tried to answer your posts as they came up as I was writing this.

OOPS sorry, Yuln.

@ Raseri: As you get to Yuln's bedside, you see Varian there already questioning him about his encounter.

@ Varian: When you ask your question he turns back to you with a sleight grimace of pain, "It seems I'm a popular one today, eh?" He lies back down and gets more comfortable. "As too who attacked us... We thought they were just bandits at first... outlaws who hide like wolves in the forest. They were no match for us. But then came the cold fey of the north. They appeared among us and the battle turned quickly... My people speak of the winter-touched all the time, but I never expected to meet them this far south..." He stares at the ceiling as he says this, as if reliving the past battle.

"What are the Winter-touched you ask?... They are Fey creatures who have sworn themselves to the White Witches of Irrisen, those who stole our lands from us during the Winter War... Tiny sprites no taller than the length of a man's forearm. But don't be fooled by their small stature... Legends say they have taken a sliver of ice into their hearts, and their touch bears the harsh bite of winter." He lifts his arm for emphasis, showing again his frostbitten flesh.

"And the only way to kill them is with burning flame or cold iron," Raseri adds quietly.

Caladrel thinks to himself, "Since I seem to have acquired as much as I can here, perhaps I should find the rest of the city champions. After all we will be expected to check out the situation. I'm not sure where they all are, but I know Grandma Mable can usually be found at the tavern, either tending to the wounded or feeding people with her delicious food... well HUMAN food anyway."

Caladrel makes his way to the tavern to start gathering together the heroes

Caladrel arrives at the the Silver Stoat and joins what heroes are already there. He passes on what information he was able to gather, earlier. He looks around at the rest of the group and asks, "White Witches? I'm not overly familiar with their kind. Have any of you encountered one? Or know anything about them?"

translation... could we make a knowledge: arcana, history, nature, ect check for monster knowledge about white witches? Not sure which, if any, would apply at this point.

Or see if theGM will let the resident Ulfen explain it. ;D

Yuln turns to Raseri, "Aye, burning flame or cold iron are part of those legends, but it wasn't impossible to kill them without it." His grin widens again as he remembers, "Ha... as I recall I slew a quite a few of them myself with a dagger after they disarmed me of my cold iron blade." He then listens to your exclamation in skald and his eyes widen, "Do ya think that might be happenen? By the Gods... I hope not, for our sake and for the sake of Taldor."

He shivers slightly and pulls his blanket closer to himself. His eyes lose a little bit of their focus as he speaks, "Anyway, I failed my charge... I may be a mercenary, but I took an oath to protect the Lady... Took her off into the woods they did... I tried to follow, but I wasn't fast enough... I had to get back to town or no good would have come of it..." As he continues to speak his voice starts to get softer and his eyelids start to droop. Suddenly his eyes fly open and he grabs your arm with his unbandaged one, "I can't help ye beyond what what we have spoken of and what my cold iron can can bring ye," he cups a longsword in it's rough worn, damaged scabbard with his bandaged arm and places it next to you, leaning it against his bed.

"Promise me that you will save the Lady. If the White Witches got er, then no good can come of it! Swear it to me..." he then looks you dead in the eyes and waits for your response.

Edit:
Sorry, I keep typing it up and you guys keeps ninja posting me... I'll try to get it up faster in the future k. Yes you could make a knowledge check or you can ask your resident Ulfen Adventurer as to what the White Witches are and hand wave the knowledge check (generalized knowledge only please if you provide it).... Any way, shouldn't you know a little bit about the white witches already Caladrel? You are a Winter Witch and the White Witches essentially created the archetype. Not like you know everything about them, but you would have to at least heard of them. I could provide some info if you like.

As she gets up to leave he scrambles to grab his gear as well. "Wait, this sounds like a perfect time to go study the woods and help rescue a few people as well, I'm coming." He then gives the man carrying an open blade a sideways glance, and then shudders slightly as it hums, it was just unnerving.

After gathering his gear, he stops for a moment and then scrambles back to his room to mix up an elixir. Ingredients were cheap, outfits were not.

He then scrambles out the door, chugging his concoction. Note to self, I need to figure out a way to make these more stable... and joins up with the full-blooded Ulfen at the general store.

Raseri I believe the injured warrior was offering you his cold iron sword. Are you taking it?

Sorry about that... I've been kinda sick... Anyway I thinks its reasonable that the villagers know the general direction of the attack and that Yuln came from that direction. Though I think you're staying in character, Yuln can't answer that precise question right now as he is in a deep sleep. You can try to forcibly wake him if you want.... Basically you know that the attack happened in direct line with the Border Wood and the village, right next to a side road.

(Raseri already took the sword)

Edit:
So is everyone gathering equipment and making purchases to get ready to go to the attack site? If yes, we can skip to the short journey there if you want. Warning though, that attack site brings up the first battle map (though its not a very big encounter, we can get away with not using it to start if you guys want).

"Shall we consult the cards?" Caladrel draws a Harrow ceck from an ornate hard leather case. He shuffles the deck repeatedly while chanting.

"ਮਹਾਨ ਇਕ, ਸਾਡੇ ਆਉਣ ਵਾਲੇ ਕੰਮ ਕਰਨ ਦੀ ਸਮਝ ਦੇਣ ਕਰੋ ਜੀ."

Aklo:
"Great One, please give us insight to our upcoming task."

Caladrel stops shuffling. Closes his eyes. Places a hand, palm down, over the top card.

"ਤੁਹਾਡਾ ਗਿਆਨ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਨੂੰ ਸੇਧ"

Aklo:
"Your wisdom guide us."

He slowly flips the card over and places it face up on top of the deck. He opens his eyes and peers down at the card

Harrow Card: 1d54 ⇒ 13

The Big Sky

"A momentous change is coming. I believe this to mean, if action is not taken, the mysterious cold will grow AND spread... until the world is covered in ice and snow!" Caladrel returns the cards to the carrying case on his hip. He smirks hesitantly. "While the cold temperature does not bother ME" The smirk turns to concern, "Nature is a balance and that balance must be maintained. This can not be allowed to happen. We should get started."

1 person marked this as a favorite.

As you put the card back into your deck face down (and before you put it away), you see something strange. You notice a card sticking out of it and somehow slightly askew, even though no other parts of the card are visible except for the top border. The card also appears to be face up, even though you precisely remember putting them all face down.

If You View the Card:
You draw the Mute Hag. Something on the card reflects light into you eyes causing you to blink, showing you the normal card... You could have sworn that in one of the hag's eye sockets was a little mirror.....

Caladrel definately looks at the card

Caladrel does a double take of the deck and looks confused and unnerved as he clumsily replaces the deck.

Thinking to himself, "That was very strange. I've never had THAT happen before. I don't want to give the impression that I don't know what it means. I'll keep this disturbing event to myself... for now."

Grandma Mable begins limping out of town Humming a little song.

After little more than one and a half hours into your journey, all of you start to feel a chill on the air. At first it feels like a passing cool wind, then it starts to become a constant chill amongst the Taldor summer... Then you see it... The Border Wood. The power that must have went into this phenomenon starts to sink in. Its as if someone created a perfect border between entirely two different lands. From where you are standing, all of you can see the perfect contrast of Taldor summer and the Irrisen winter.

Snow has covered the Border Wood perfectly, blanketing every tree and rock in white frozen water. Everything seems to be covered in frost and as you stand there looking at this wonder of magic, the frost seems to slowly spread outward from its center, not fast enough to be a problem for the people of Heldren in a day or two, but it certainly will reach them in do time.

As you continue your journey forward and into the Border Wood, though some of you aren't bothered by the chill, you can definitely feel its force as if the cold is a living thing trying to snuff out the warmth of your being. As you go deeper into the forest it starts to moderately snow all around you, covering you all in white and making it hard to see very far ahead. You also notice that it is becoming much harder to trudge through the snow as it has become about shin deep.

I Setup Quick and Dirty winter rules in the Campaign description. You might also want to try and see if you can craft some snowshoes for over snow travel. After you guys decide a plan of attack (not literally) and preparations, we can get onto the Massacre site.

"This looks like where I grew up. While it may bring some good memories it certainly is not good for Heldren!"

Near the edge of the snow, Raseri stops and begins pulling on the warmer winter gear.

"You grew up in Irrisen," the younger woman asks, her eyes narrowing as she stares at Grandma Mable.

"You don't look like Jadwiga," she growls.

Perception (Is little miss Mable disguised?): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25

@Mable: That hits the DC of 25, from what you said about her disguising herself and taking 20 in the morning. So what do you look like under the makeup?

"While the temperature doesn't bother me, the deep snow is an issue. There has got to be a better way to travel." Caladrel looks up for a moment in ponderous reflection. "The snow will also have a profound effect on commerce between cities. How much further do we have to go?"

Actually, she still looks like she is from the land of the north just older. The DC she set would actually be around 21 to 19 because she only made her self appear older than she actually is (and what I gather, old or venerable in age category, which would affect her set DC).... I'm not sure if that would warrant enough to make the check though, because she still looks the part....

@ Caladrel: actually, just a little bit further... more like a narrative distance rather than a measured distance though... just trying to make sure it's not too much of a trek when it comes to this snow. Anybody willing to make makeshift snowshoes?

How does a 25 not beat a 21? I thought Disguise was opposed by Perception. Raseri should still be able to tell it is a disguise.

"Well it looks like the rumors were true. I wonder what's causing this..." Sevante comments as he pulls specalized gear out of his backpack and starts taking measurements. After a few different experiments he starts talking again, "The edge of the frost is expanding, though only a few millimeters a minute. Nothing liable to affect Heldren any time soon but might be a problem in the future. I've left a branch as a marker here to ensure it's not speeding up or slowing down. It also seems the temperature drops the closer to the center of the woods we get, meaning that is probably the origination point as well. Probably the most surprising is the 32 degree difference in a 15 foot span. This suggests it is not a natural occurrence."

After a taking a moment to write down his observations, Sevante continues is a less formal tone, "We might need to make a couple pairs of snow shoes. Bear with me it has been a while since I made a pair; I've since learned how to stay on top of deep snow. However, I'll try to show you how."

Three things, Sevante doesn't actually have any gear for this, but, as long as it gives no mechanical benefit, can we say he does? If needed he can pay for it later. Secondly, the cold-honed racial trait allows the half-elf to move at normal speed on natural snow and ice. Which begs the question is this considered natural for this purpose?
Finally, would survival work for making snowshoes? If not Craft (shoes) untrained: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18 if so Survival: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8... well nevermind.

Yes, but I didn't say you didn't succeed, I said I don't know if it would warrant it. To make a check against a disguise, you would have to have something that would warrant the check (as the description for the disguise skill). She still looks like she is from Irrisen, which is what you tried to warrant for your check. In fact, only things that would warrant the check would be her somehow acting outside the age that she set for her disguise check (like all of a sudden she deftly dodged an attack or acted out of character for her "age".... I guess someone could recognize her and point it out to...). I'll also be kinda straight with you... Really the only reason why I am saying anything at this point is because it's character verses character. You could make perception checks against npc's all day and the only reason you would have to give me is that you were a very cautious person. I don't think its very fair to do something slightly based on character knowledge, otherwise you wouldn't really think to make the check on another character even if she didn't look the part.... I'm not trying to be mean... If you think it warrants the check then we can take it to a group vote (with me staying out of it) to decide if you want. ^_^

@ Sevante: This would count as natural snow and ice. Also I guess survival would work, but your craft check still worked out. You would just go around and gather simple materials and make rudimentary snowshoes.... Definitely not something you could sell (for that you would need tools and better materials) or would last very long but they would get you through the adventure (and to other places that would sell actual, long lasting ones). I guess you don't need them, but you could make them for others that need them though if you want...

Oops look like I wasn't clear enough. I meant the gear for taking measurements, I.e. his "specalized gear" from the post above... He is not a shoe maker, but a self-proclaimed weather specialist... and yes he is making the snowshoes for someone else, and 'teaching' the others how to at the same time.

I see your point, but honestly it would be more accurate to call Ras paranoid in this instance. I can layout the reasoning behind her actions, but I think it'd be better to continue this in a PM or the discussion thread.
I also want to apologize if I came off as a jerk. Not thinking before I hit post apparently. :)

@ Sevante: Thats OK.

@ Raseri: I didn't think you were being mean or a jerk... I didn't want to come off as the unopen DM either (or a jerk DM for that matter). I was simply trying to show what I thought.

Dont worry when it comes to a battle I think you will suspect I am younger than I appear :) and you would need to roll at least a 25 to see though my disguise :)
