Hunched over, Maellyra moves down the tunnel after the others, At the fork, she mentally directs her phantasmal light to first illuminate the southeastern passage, then the northeastern one. Down each corridor she strains her eyes to make out any sign of hidden kobolds or an indication of where they should go, but between the cramped confines and the bodies between her and the passageways, she doesn't see much.

Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6

"Which way do we go?"

When the phantom moves to the northeast, there is a commotion from the room beyond. Maellyra is unable to make out the words the voices beyond are saying, however. The chamber seems quiet large, as the light does not reveal the whole room. A chasm provides a barrier part-way through the room.

Perception DC 17:
Several alarmed Draconic voices believe the phantom lantern bearer is the first wave of a magical assault by the pink skins. They sound worried, but determined.

The southern tunnel looks to open into a smaller chamber, and no sounds of alarmed kobolds come from beyond.

"Ouch" Pavo exclaimed as the stone thumped into his stomach.

"Why you little..." Pavo began as he moved forward, shield hefted in front of him for added protection. He stomped right through the straw on the floor and headed after the Kobold that had sent the stone...

Oh, poor Pavo is at the north tunnel, yeah...the one the kobold specifically said was trapped...

Pavo's foot goes straight through the straw and the flimsy platform below it, causing him to lose his balance and threatening to drop him into a deep pit.

Pavo had fallen in enough holes in his life, but this one was more surprising than most. While he dropped his trident as he fell, he managed to throw his shield up above his head deflecting most of the falling debris. This didn't do much to deaden the fall and he briefly had the wind knocked out of him as he landed on his back with a thud.

The rats had him nearly surrounded and came at him from multiple angles. Still, Pavo was an experienced fighter and fought multiple opponents on several occasions. Never anything this small mind you, but it was all more or less the same. Try to avoid as many blows as you could and land more than you received. One rat did manage to slip past his shield and bite into his hand. If not for the cestus covering the real meet of his hand, the bite could have seriously damaged tendons or even snapped bone. As it was it managed to pierce the skin and draw blood, but nothing too serious.

I might be confused, but I don't think Pavo actually fell in the pit since he made the DC 20 Reflex save, right? As it is, he (and the rats) should just be in the hall to the north...? Please correct me if I'm wrong, DM D.

Maellyra backtracks through the cramped passage and out into the more spacious cavern entrance in search of their missing ally. Ignoring the ache in her back, she moves north toward the next passage, the most likely place for Pavo to have gone if the squeaking of hungry rats is any indicator.

Double move.

Directing your dancing lights is not an action, so let me know if you'd like to reposition the spell.

Realizing that Pavo is missing, and hearing the sounds of a rock slide nearby, the group immediately knows that the human, already known to charge headlong into traps, is in trouble.

Everyone backtracks to the northern tunnel, with Leng being about ten feet away from Pavo, and everyone else just outside the cave. No kobolds can be seen, but a small mischief of dire rats surrounds Pavo.

Wild Empathy (Ex):
A druid can improve the attitude of an animal. This ability functions just like a Diplomacy check made to improve the attitude of a person. The druid rolls 1d20 and adds her druid level and her Charisma modifier to determine the wild empathy check result.
The typical domestic animal has a starting attitude of indifferent, while wild animals are usually unfriendly.
To use wild empathy, the druid and the animal must be able to study each other, which means that they must be within 30 feet of one another under normal conditions. Generally, influencing an animal in this way takes 1 minute but, as with influencing people, it might take more or less time.

Maellyra squeezes into the northern passageway behind Leng as her spell floats by to shed its ghostly light over Pavo and the rats. As she moves, she reaches behind her to retrieve the crossbow hanging from her satchel, preparing to skewer a dire rat or two if Spitter doesn't manage to befriend them all first.

The ghostly lantern bearer arrives on the scene, showing the dire rats hesitating on their attempts to bite Pavo. They stand on their hind legs, whiskered noses twitching in the air as they detect the twin scents of food and kobold wafting through the tunnel.

Well, that's good enough to catch their attention. The rats, with their 2 intelligence, aren't going to make an orderly withdraw, but they're also not really a threat at this point unless Spitter wants to taunt them and not give them that jerky :P So unless you want to beat up on innocent dire rats carrying disease, feel free to drop out of combat for the moment.

The light reveals a chamber to the east filled with multiple loose piles of moldy straw, while the northern passage has wide, shallow steps leading slightly upward. There are no signs of the kobols who had recently retreated this way.

"Unless you'd like to continue testing the limits of your dumb luck?"

Will we need a check of some sort to get across the pit, or is it not that serious?

Not that serious. The rubble and overall pit-i-ness make the square rough terrain, but that doesn't really matter right now since you're not in combat mode.

"Thanks Spitter. That helps a lot" Pavo said as he dusted himself off. He took a moment to take his cestus off and examine his hand. Healing magic always impressed Pavo, especially when it was used on him. He slipped the gloved weapon back on and silently took up the rear of the line, blushing and nodding as Maellrya passed.

Maellyra nods in agreement with Spitter's admonition, deciding to keep quiet about her own reserves of healing magic, both those she could call upon through spells and those that she had purchased beforehand. It was often said that in times of crisis, it was better to have and not need than to need and not have. In the case of this group, Maellyra thinks it would be better to have and not let anyone else know she had unless it was absolutely needed. With any hope, she thinks it will curb the more reckless tendencies some of her companions seemed to possess. The witch turns briefly to give Pavo an inscrutable look as she considers this, and is pleasantly surprised to find he hasn't become separated from the group again.

In the next chamber, Maellyra, trying to get into the mindset of their craven quarry, hazards a peek down the well. Barring her finding anything of interest in there, she will then send her phantasmal light down the northern passage.

Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8

Maellyra finds nothing in the well except water which gently reflects the ghostly illumination.

A few torches wedged into niches in this cave's rocky walls overwhelm her magical illumination. This area is obviously used for labor-intensive tasks such as making rope from vines, drying meat, and tanning hides, but the working conditions are squalid at best. The cave is presently empty.

Double-checking my threads today I realized I left off a whole sentence above. Happens when I blend their text with my own more often than I would like to admit, lol. Anyway, that new cave description is the passage to the north. The one to the east is narrow and dark. There are no exits from the north cave.

Straw is strewn across the floor of this large cave. The ceiling vaults to a height of twelve feet. Three ledges, eight feet off the ground, look out over the main cavern. A five-foot wide, twenty-foot-deep trench runs north to south through the western half of the cavern, with just one five-foot wide bridge of natural stone allowing passage from one side to the other.

It is difficult to determine how many kobolds are scattered in the shadows of the ledges, but the ghostly light also reveals three humans, two women and a man, crouched at the tops of them.

Spitter:
Spitter counts ten kobolds in all on the ledges or hiding in the shadows of the room.

"You can see we have hostages. If you do not leave immediately, we will kill them." The message is shouted in heavily accented Common from the center ledge.

Just a quick check in to set a nice tense moment up, I will update the map as soon as possible.

Spitter steps forward a little rasing his staff to get attention and replies in common.

"Listen to me! I am Spitter Snagscale, formerly of the blue-scale Cliffangers tribe! You kill these pink-skins and you GUARANTEE your tribe's extinction!"

At this point he slams the tip of his staff down, making a loud noise that echoes for a second or two.

"Like mine. These villagers out-number your tribe, and they have reserves of other pink-skins to call upon. You kill them and an army of pink-skins will invade your home soon enough and burn you out! Kill every egg and spawn! JUST...LIKE...MINE."

He slowly looks around, trying hard to gather every draconic eye he can.

"Your chieftain leads you down a path you cannot win! These pink-skins are not only willing to overlook the damage you have caused with the tower's collapse, but are willing to negotiate and trade with you rather than BOTHER to destroy you! It's just easier for them! But if you keep or kill these pink-skins...you bring on your own destruction here! And I cannot help you!"

Pausing for a moment of dramatic silence, Spitter raises his vestigial wings, hoping his obvious ties to the Draconic might help sway the group.

"Release these prisoners and YOU go free as well. I swear this upon the Voice-in-Thunder himself!"

Heck of a risk, but three more plus an RP bonus for a good and pointed speech...

There is a long pause after Spitter delivers his speech, crafted to instill fear and panic before offering a way out. All the kobolds look around to one another, then all at once, furious Draconic debate fills the air.

"He is right, the humans breed like goblins!"
"What madness is that? We attack them and they want to trade? It is a trick!"
"The Risen God will protect us!"
"Were is your "Risen God" now that the pink-skins are here?"
"The chieftain laid out a defense plan, follow it."
"The plan leaves our most vulnerable with few guards!"

The cacophonous argument finally quiets some when the northern-most ledge tosses down their weapons and tells the scared and sobbing woman to go to her people.

The south ledge, witnessing this, stops speaking altogether and look pointedly at one another. One of them announces loudly, "This human is free, we are withdrawing to protect our young and elderly. If you come into our nursery, we will kill you." They are not asking for permission, but slowly climbing down. They are still armed, and watching to see if anyone will attack them.

Before the first of them hits to the ground, however, the middle ledge doubles-down. A spear point is placed beneath the younger female's throat. She is young, but holding up emotionally better than the older woman, keeping her cool despite the threats. "No. The Risen God will avenge us if you lay waste to our tribe. The Risen God will probably raze your tribe just for murdering our guards! We have faith, unlike these traitors," the speaker sneers at the other kobolds.

Pavo stood quietly at the end of the line. He wasn't entirely sure what was happening but he knew his decision making ability had been revoked. In the short time she's known him, the witch is almost certain that she's seen him end more threats without a weapon than most men could armed. As such, she doesn't for a moment consider the possibility that the rest of their group would leave quietly once the exchange was made. Fishing through the folds of her tattered skirt as surreptitiously as she can, Maellyra finds a sliver of copper wire and rolls it between her thumb and index finger, concentrating on Leng as she does. Her lips move, but if any words pass them they are nearly imperceptible to those around her.
