"A wee bit of avoidance, actually. Kind of looking at Whitechin up near the north wall. We want to make the streets safer, and, according to the Rundottari, there's no forces available to hunt this goblin down. Children are disappearing, not just from the shadowbeasts. I want to stop them. If the Free citizens get credit, we'll all be better off for it."

Arael pulls up chairs around one of the tables, but Janiven remains vigilant by the door, watching for Hellknights.

Byron smiles at Arael.

"I am glad to see that you are hale and hearty after your period of confinement - I must admit that I grew quite concerned when I heard the whispers that you had been taken; the people of Westcrown need a symbol to look towards, to show them that life can be better, and that there is still some hope left in the world..."

He then bows with a flourish.

"I would be honoured to assist those who rescued you - an opportunity to do more good for those too long ignored by the rich and powerful is always welcome... but I get ahead of myself; what exactly did you have in mind?"

EDIT:

When Arael explains, Byron frowns.

"The shadowbeasts are bad enough, but if there is a Goblin preying on the children of the city, it needs to be stopped!"

"Exactly. If the Dottari won't help, and the Hellknights just think the kids are heathens, we need to do something! Show them the town we can rebuild with our own hands, and stop depending on the Devils and get rid of the damnable shadowbeasts!"

Arael exclaims, and immediately shirks down a bit as he realizes he was a bit too animated...

Whitechin?! 'bout time something got done about him if they are child-snatching. I'll be more than happy to lend a hand and split gobbo skulls.

Byron smiles.

"You sound like exactly the sort of person I would like to be working with. The future of any city is its children; if the City won't rescue them, then its Citizens must step in to meet the challenge!"

Lemmy: Your "homebrew rogue" isn't available (the link goes directly to paizo.com), but homebrew is really hard for me to approve.

I copy/paste'd the url coding and then forgot to replace the standard url (www.paizo.com) with the one I meant. My bad. :P

It's here (and here, for additional insight into the design process of the homebrew), if it makes any difference. I can guarantee it's not overpowered in any way. Probably still less versatile than a Bard, but it's certainly a improvement over vanilla Rogue.

I've been wanting to play a Rogue/Duelist kind of character for a while now, but believe it or not, the Swashbuckler is not exactly what I'm looking for and I'm not a big fan of using playtest stuff, since who knows how the end product will turn out.

The backstory I have in mind is mostly complete, I just gotta adapt it to Chelliax.

Here is the background for my Rogue (or Bard) character: Jimmy The Slick.

Jimmy The Slick - Character Background:
Born and raised among the bourgeoisie of Absalom, James Sullivan II has always been the runt of the litter. He wasn't strong like Malcolm, nor was he wise like Lucius, and he certainly wasn't as disciplined as Amelia.

But he was clever. More clever than his family ever suspected.

James always wished to be a fencing masters, but never had the discipline and devotion of his siblings, which cause his training to be frequently interrupted by days of misadventures and trouble-making.

Tired of his bon vivant ways, Lord Joseph Sullivan, his father, eventually decided it was time for James to learn how to conduct himself, and forced the young man to enlist into the the navy of Absalom.

However, instead of actually doing so, the young half-elf used the last of his coins to bribe one of the merchant sailors into allowing James into the ship, sailing for weeks until he found himself in Laekastel adn eventually, Brastlewark, where James finally felt like he was home.

Brastlewark is a city of bards and artists, alchemists and wizards. Wits and charm are more valued here than anyone else. James eventually found work as a valuable translator and negotiator for a successful merchant.

For a while, life was good. In 2 years, James, now better known as Jessen Sandarian, had found success. His talents were well appreciated and he had enough free time to practice swordplay and smooth talking whenever he wished.

It all changed when two agents of Thrune knocked on his door. They were angry and impatient, and accused James of being an accomplice to illegal contraband. He wasn't given time to refute the accusations, but on his cell-wagon, James learned that his boss was an smuggler, but worse than that, one that failed to bribe the right person, causing the guard to arrest anyone who had even the faintest connection with him.

James was smart enough to know he wouldn't have a fair judgement, and deft enough to unlock his handcuffs and escape the wagon, his escape cloaked by the night and the alias he had used during the last two years.

James skipped town, hoping to find somewhere to begin anew. However, during his travels, he saw more than a few good friends being unjustly arrested and executed. That's when James decided that as long the House of Thrune ruled this nation, he would be a thorn in their side.

He lived a couple weeks doing small sabotages against government agents of the House of Thrune, but wasn't able to cause any real damage. However, on his last mission to release prisoners who were being transported from Chelliax, James was almost caught, only escaping thanks to the timely intervention of Aral and Jeniven, who were also trying to release the prisoners.

Thanks to this and other similarly lucky escapes, James eventually got the nickname "Jimmy The Slick", which he uses as a badge of honor, but also as reminder that the tide of luck can change at any time, so it's always wise to enjoy Desna's favor without depending on it.

Sorry for the wall of text... I got carried away. :)

Jimmy The Slick - Questionnaire:
How long has your character lived in Westcrown?
A few months.
What is your day job in Westcrown? (Your character needs to have a job - in between the "adventuring" you will live your life.)
In his off-time, James work as a fence, translator and diplomat, usually for merchants, sailors and tourists. When that line of work doesn't get him any money, he finds coins in informal duels on the docks, participating either as a gambler or as a fighter himself.
Why does your character harbor resentment or frustration against the government?
The agents of the House of Thrune not only put a definite end to Jimmy's pleasant life in Brastlewark, they also caged and executed many of his old friends.
When did Arael and Janiven recruit you?
When they saved him from being caught during one of his attempts to free prisoners who were about to be transported to the capital.

This build assumes the homebrew Rogue is allowed, if not, I'll provide a similarly built Bard.

I love creating and developing character concepts, and for me, that involves both fluff and crunch. I enjoy the concept of Rogues, but I feel the class mechanics do not allow me to effectively play the character I want to play. I don't need my characters to be powerful, but I need them to be useful and capable of fulfilling the idea that inspired me to create them in the first place. :)

Thought I would try and submit an Inquisitor.

Background:

Kazim Cindeo has lived a hard life in Westcrown. Born a tiefling, and shunned by the public due to the taint in his blood, Kazim was largely hidden by his family – ashamed at having a subordinate as a possible heir, and thus he spent a lot of time on his own, alternating between rage and self-loathing.

Eventually Kazim realised that if wanted to improve his own lot in life, it was down to him and his own terms. He wore his heritage without shame, and was a firm believer in strength discouraging potential abuse. Any human willing to trade words with Kazim quickly found themselves faced with a cold flat stare full of unrestricted loathing, and soon encouraged them to leave…and quickly.

Unexpectedly, Kazim found that his lot in life improved, and amazingly found true love with a human, one of the only people in his life that looked at him as a person, rather than just a result of some dark fiendish heritage. The relationship progressed, and soon after they were engaged to be married. People talked, but Kazim could still strike fear into the bravest human with a stern glance, and him and his sweetheart shrugged off any insults directed their way, determined to not let peoples prejudices dictate how they should live their own lives. Tragically however, Kazim’s lover was found dead in an ally, her throat cut and ring missing, leaving Kazim broken hearted. Swearing eternal vengeance on whoever was responsible, and unable to shake the feeling that the attack was somehow motivated by his own heritage, Kazim decided (privately), that the only way to improve the lot of tieflings in Westcrown was a change in power, and thus secretly started supporting small groups that might support his own views. Coming from a rich family, Kazim still had the connections and money required to be a minor player in this area, despite being shafted by his family into an out of the way role in the families shipping business.

questions:

How long has your character lived in Westcrown?
Kazim has been a citizen of Westcrown all his life, thus, he knows the ins and outs of the city fairly well.

What is your day job in Westcrown? (Your character needs to have a job - in between the "adventuring" you will live your life.)

Kazim helps out with the shipping business, mostly doing obscure book-keeping that he often wonders is even needed. That fact that he has been largely pushed out of his family doesn't worry him so much, truthfully, he’s just glad he wasn't cut off entirely, and besides, after his lovers death he enjoys the solitude.

Why does your character harbor resentment or frustration against the government?

Mostly for failing to improve the lives of tieflings. Cheliax wouldn’t be the only nation where a certain race gets a raw deal, but Kazim has had enough of being treated as a second class citizen, and believes the children shouldn’t have to bear the hardship of having a fiend as a parent, its not as if he chose his father. Furthermore, Kazim constantly feels guilty for his lovers death, sure it was his tiefling heritage that somehow motivated the attack. If true, Kazim places the blame firmly at the feet of the Cheliax government for standing and watching as the discrimination and prejudice got out of control.

When did Arael and Janiven recruit you?

Shortly after his lovers funeral, he was approached by Janiven. Naturally suspicious, Kazim initially declined, but after thinking it through (and doing some investigating on his own), Kazim finally accepted after determining that both him and Janiven had mutually exclusive goals (some of them at any rate), and that they both had use for each other.

Dario is sitting as is customary for him, in a tipped back chair, leaning against the wall. He seems to be drinking wine, but he sips it and grimaces. "I don't know why you picked this place, Arael. The wine is nearly rancid. Whiskey probably isn't bad though. I should see if they have any."

He tips the chair back on all fours, slamming on to the floor. "So you finally did it, you bastard? You're in some sort of shadow war with the Hellknights? You'd best take some more care. If they find you again they're not going to just imprison you this time." He sighs.

"So what do you need? Goblins can be some nasty buggers if you're not prepared. Maybe I can ask around to see if someone knows where they're working out of. Or at least the areas people are beginning to avoid. I figure that's where you'll want to go."

Barnabas comes in a bit late. "Some poor wench was just beat up in the streets. It is horrible, these crooks told everyone she was stealing. But that is the name of the game in this city." Politly ordering some ale, he waits till the wench is gone before continuing. "I am quite happy all is well with you. I hope the time in custody was not too painful. Now, you asked if I would be willing to aid you in another matter. Even a bit more direct. This morning, I was not ready.... but now. What can I do?"

I see you are replacing an Alchemist. Here is my submission. Than you for your consideration. I would love to join.

How long has your character lived in Westcrown?

Entire life

What is your day job in Westcrown? (Your character needs to have a job - in between the "adventuring" you will live your life.)

fairly recently took over ownership of alchemy, potion store (see background)

Why does your character harbor resentment or frustration against the government?

government condones slavery, exploitation of tieflings (see background)

When did Arael and Janiven recruit you?

These names were not in player's guide for CoT, but given a little info about their role, I could come up with something quickly, or if you want to come up with your own idea, either way.

Akvius: Arael and Janiven are the leader and second in command of the rebel group within Westcrown. They want to help the common folk, possibly winning freedom from Thrune's rule of Cheliax. Arael is very indirect in his approach (at the moment), while Janiven is a woman of action, but deferential to Arael.

Lemmy: I have read (and reread) your homebrew rogue vs. the Pathfinder one, I can't approve its use in this campaign (it's a really nice rebuild, btw). The background looks promising.

At this point, I will close recruitment.

I would like to see you all post amongst yourselves in the discussion of what to do with Whitechin, a goblin leader near the north wall the Dottari have not pursued. My decision will come on Tuesday to allow you all to show your posting style.

Now, back to Arael.
"Actually, I was hoping a couple of you could help out. I know we'll deal this through in force, but what about the people. How do we win hearts and minds to make them understand we're trying to help? Further, how far can we reasonably go to make it clear the 'Free Citizens of Westcrown' captured the goblin? With my escape from the Hellknights, I don't want to be advertising too loudly, but I want people to know." He says and opens the discussion to the floor.

Janiven snorts, but keeps her eyes on the road outside.

I'm giving you all the weekend to post your answers and discussions with one another. I will be offline through Tuesday evening it appears, thus that is when I will make the call on who is in. I am certain I will take three.

Colgrin posted in the discussion thread, I am reposting here:

Begin Colgrin
Yar!

"As for dealing with the goblins, we can't publicly claim credit since the Hellknights might get twitchy. Perhaps a 'Whisper' campaign where the members of our group+NPCs just spread talk about some commonfolk getting fed up with the goblins. Third hand knowledge and stuff. "I heard it from my cousin who heard it from his brother that the goblins were killed by some people."

End Dark being Colgrin.

When did Arael and Janiven recruit you?

Being meticulous with the bookkeeping in his shop, not long ago, Akvius discovered a surge in sales of his products. This could easily been written off to running a good business, except that the same 2 names were either on the receipts or being referred in to in casual conversation about customers' reasons for their purchases. After some mutual exchanges of increasingly personal experiences and motives, trust has been built. Resulting in an invitation to a "secret" meeting with the understanding that Akvius was under no obligation to join, but should he not be interested, his silence about the conversations in that meeting, would ensure no sudden "drop" in sales at the shop would occur. Polite blackmail? Maybe? Akvius' curiosity has peaked though, and with an open mind arrives at the location given to him slightly later than suggested.

--------------------------------------------------

After a while of simply listening to get a basic understanding of what is going on...

"In order for this 'Free Citizens of Westcrown' to grow you need marketing. As a local businessman, this is something I have some knowledge in. I would suggest creating a symbol, and making it's association to this group known. Then display this symbol with any act that points to the improvement of the city, or defiance of this town's oppression. Once you've got this positive reinforcement in place, you'll have no problem rallying folks to your cause. If you feel the time is not right for this bold of a statement, I concur that 'word of mouth' can also go a long way"

Akvius pauses for a moment then with a more serious and emotional voice says...

"I've lived here all my life. I love this town, and it's people. If this goblin has anything to do with our children, he MUST be dealt with! If I may be of assistance, I have some 'special' skills I would be honored to offer in this endeavor."

Perhaps get more of those big torches up to light the streets. The main areas and rich folk can afford the lights, but if we plant a few here and there we can make some safe zones.

"A symbol is a good idea. It will be something we can leave as a calling card, over some dead goblins or simply on a street we've cleared. Once it catches on, people can use it as a sign of solidarity and support without putting their names to it. The Hellknights probably won't care that we're killing goblins, but eventually they'll start paying attention. You can capture of kill people, but not a symbol. Not something ordinary people can scrawl on walls or tables in taverns. That's how the idea of the Free Children will survive."

"What can it be though? The letters 'FC'? Some other image? It has to be something able to be drawn quickly and simply."

No problem. I won't insist any further.

Any reason in particular for not allowing it? I ask just for feedback.

I'm not sure what crunch to add to Jimmy. I just noticed the party already has a Bard, so I don't know what class to use. I suppose I could make do with an Oracle with Dervish Dance, but I'm am already playing one in a different game, and it doesn't seem to fit the concept I had in mind.

I'm going to take a few liberties here and assume I am here at the start, so I don't need to introduce myself and wait for the GM to effectively repost the context of the situation just so (IC) my character knows the score

Kazim frowns, "Or you can blame it on Ode Andrezi". Kazim shrugs at the look of confusion on everyones face. "Ode Andrezi can be the face of your organisation, the wisecracking ex actor, and leader of a covert group who tracked down a despicable criminal, and brought him to justice". Kazim smiles and continues, "The Hellknights go crazy searching for this figure, trying to figure out who he is, what his motives are, whereas the true fact is that Ode is a ghost, someone that actually doesn't exist he can be whoever you want him to be, a leader. a financial backer, a previous member, anything you like. Make him the face of a fictional organisation, a target for the Hellknights to hunt down...its not like they can hurt a fiction."

"From there, there can either make him a "public" face of The Free Citizens of Westcrown, and draw obvious links between him and actual members, or, if you wanted to keep personal involvement out of it, you can simply promote fictional stories, feigning that the Free Citizens had his unofficial support, or other such fiction...so long as the Hellknighs are investigating Ode, an 'obvious' political extremist, they stop investigating the smaller fish, or at least give you slightly more breathing room."

Lemmy: The class seems to combine two things together within the archetypes. It's built so that both are together. I like the design, but it fell outside my "line" for bending the rules. Also: We have no bard currently. We have a very silent Paladin (whom I hope returns), a Witch, a Monk, and a Cleric.

****

Arael notes with some amusement the idea of marketing, but realizes its merits.

"Unfortunately, the Hellknights already know of me as the leader, or seem to. I have to be very careful when out and about. The idea of a symbol is good. Unfortunately, we do have to remain mostly hidden for now. Masks and hooded cloaks, with red armbands are our 'uniform' while we do this. But perhaps a coin or some form of heraldic device. Perhaps a leering devil with a sword through its head, carried with one member to drop it where the act is completed? Iolana would certainly pick out a rose for this, but that puts us aligned with a church, which should not be done."

He posits this to the group.

Good discussion so far. Looking forward to where everyone takes it through the rest of the weekend.

A coin sounds good. A small one can be forged with little trouble as long as you have the mold and a heat source hot enough to melt metal. It is simple to drop if ya are in a hurry wether to ditch evidance or mark your quarry.

"The idea of a symbol is a good one. But I would suggest for the moment... to chose an impersonal one. We all know to well how our beloved house thrune handels the long nail in the board! And I would prefer not something that might get you in jail immideatly, but something... something with more hope! Maybe a beacon. A beacon for our desire to end the night´s terror. A beacon that shows here is safety!"
Taking a sip from his drink, Barnabas is silent for a moment. "Do not doubt, there are many people, who still remember the horror of the civil war. And more who just want to live a peaceful live. Who will adapt to the injustice of our lovely peacekeepers. We also have to show them... that there are other forces there. On second thoughts. Maybe we need a hero. A hero with a mask, a mask everyone will know who it was. Yes. And never forget. We need the mask, not a person. The more impossible his deeds will be, the more the people will look up to him!"

I'll PM you about the homebrew to avoid derailing the thread.

Also, isn't Dario a Bard?

A hero with a mask? With an animal thing a ding? Perhaps...Ratman! The terror that squeaks at night!

"I was thinking of something more inspiring. And ratman, there are some were things with rats and we do not want to go that way!"

Byron looks thoughtful.

"An easy-to-hide disguise sounds like an excellent idea - black cloth masks, cloaks, and red armbands will certainly do it.

As to a calling card, well, A coin is too small, and might be missed - maybe a medal could work, but another alternative would be a small pennon tied to the end of an arrow, perhaps? That would allow dramatic insertion of the calling-card, without making obvious whomever 'delivered' it.

As to the symbol, well, this city was once known as "The City of Nine Stars", back when it was the Old Chelish capital - Perhaps the symbol could be a circle of nine stars, surrounding a stylised 'W'? I think a dagger through a devil's head would suggest that we were in favor of overthrowing House Thrune, and we don't want to draw that sort of attention, just now..."

"How about a large wooden marker? Something we could cut and carve ourselves rather than have cast. And as far as the symbol, I was also thinking about harkening back to Westcrown's glory days. History shows this city was a shining example of what humanity could do. The people need that kind of hope back. I think it's an excellent idea."

City of Nine Stars sounds good.

"A collection of nine stars sound good, or perhaps an Eye to remind the people of the golden age of Cheliax."

"These are all good ideas. I especially lie the reminder of the 'good ole days'. It conveys a nostalgia, as well as the hope of a return to better times. Is the goblin to be the first appearance of this, or should the symbol be present before we deal with the goblin, so that the link between the two is not misconstrued? Personally, I would suggest the former. It wastes no time dealing with the current danger, and provides a BOLD introduction to this symbol."

We should plant it when we deal with the goblin methinks.

"If we use the eye, we risk being associated with Aroden's dwindling faith. I prefer the circle of stars. Wood could work, but I like the idea of something that can be cast in metal, as it is more durable than wood, in the same way that our cause should be. Planting it upon the Goblin's termination sounds like an excellent plan."

"And metal can be easier mass produzed. Although some branding for a wooden coins should work too."

I can get access to a forge.

"Perhaps this first time, a simple cloth with the symbol. I like the nine-pointed star, and I like the idea of using the stylized 'W' for our city. It ties to no faith, brings about our history, and brings us closer to the ideal."
Arael pauses, looking at the gathered fellows looking to help the common people.
"Colgrim, Byron, Dario and Barnabus, I have friends going to the north wall to help with Whitechin. Tell the others you're enemies of Whitechin as well, and that Arael suggested you help. The rest of you, I'm glad to know the Free Citizens of Westcrown have allies. Thank you all for coming, and I will contact you shall the need arise.

With that, Arael and Janiven are gone, quickly. The remainder of you disperse at reasonable times, meeting the remaining characters.

Thank you all for applying! Colgrim, Byron, Dario and Barnabus, please post in the discussion thread and I will add you to the active players within the game. You all did great over the weekend. My next post within the campaign will be this evening, sometime after 9:00 PM Central.
