The Dissidents of Westcrown - A CoT PBP Adventure (Inactive)

Westcrown

Westcrown has gone to the devils. The once-proud city and its denizens live in a climate of momentary harmony, largely due to their fear of imprisonment - or worse - should they raise their voices or arms against the ruling Thrice-Damned House of Thrune.

Though you have little hope of ever overthrowing such a powerful entity, you are compelled to remain silent and passive no longer. Perhaps your actions will light a spark that ignites a purifying pyre - without immolating the city you call home.

Hello, and welcome to a recruitment thread for a Council of Thieves PBP adventure. I am a newcomer to these boards, but not Pathfinder or PBP games. I'm looking forward to gaming with this active, creative community!

How to Apply
1. Download the CoT Player's Guide

2. Create a Character using the following guidelines:

  • 1st Level Characters
  • All Paizo-created classes are allowed. We'll be playing with emerging guns (I think).
  • Max HP at level one, roll or average+1 thereafter
  • Paizo-created archetypes allowed, and may be stacked, if not replacing identical abilities
  • Core races preferred, but featured races from the Advanced Race Guide will be considered if the background is strong enough.
  • Non-evil alignments and no CN unless a VERY compelling case can be made.
  • 20-point buy - Nothing higher than 18 before racial bonuses, and preferably nothing lower than 8 after racial bonuses.
  • Two traits - one should be a campaign trait. If the flavor of a trait isn't perfect for your character, I'm fine with tweaking the fluff.
  • Average gold for your class

3. Come up with your character's story using the following questions as a guide. I don't want to applicants to feel like they have to flesh out a complete backstory - in my brief perusal of the boards, I've seen how many applicants there can be for a game, and making players write a novel for applications seems harsh. If you have a character you've already created, that's awesome. Just please answer these questions in addition to what you've already written - even if the answers contradict what's currently in your stat block. In-character responses will earn you bonus points.

  • How long has your character lived in Westcrown?
  • What is your day job in Westcrown? (Your character needs to have a job - in between the "adventuring" you will live your life.)
  • Why does your character harbor resentment or frustration against the government?

What I'm Hoping For
I'd like at least one post a day on weekdays, slowing down on the weekends. More would be awesome, but I understand how these games go.

I love gaming groups of four players, but I think I may go for up to six - assuming there are six quality applications (of which I have little doubt will be the case).

Latstly, I'd like narratively interesting characters, more than mechanically sound characters. I have no problem with players who like to min/max - it's just not my cup of tea (and I'm pretty bad at it).

Any Questions?
That's it - I hope this will give me enough info to make a smart decision without asking too much of you. If you have any questions, or if I've left anything out, please let me know.

I look forward to the applications!

I haven't done PBP in a long while, but I've been looking for a chance to get into it. I have a character in mind - I'll get back to you tomorrow with a character sheet/application.

I'm thinking a Child of Infamy rogue-actor with some light unarmed combat ability.

Thoughts on history/answering of the questions:

Spoiler:
Tervon Valsienne has lived in Westcrown his entire life. Spending his youth learning the disciplines of unarmed combat and some light dueling, he was thrown out of that life when his patron and Uncle, Harkon Borusen, fled for Andoran amidst a scandal involving the summoning of an angel to combat the evils of Cheliax.

Unfortunately, Harkon was a well known as a patron of the arts, and his family ties were well known. Tervon's mother fled into the city's underground, to the acting guilds and hid with the lower classes in the mud and grime. About a year ago, Tervon's father, Xaldon, was found, publicly excrutiated, and the rest of the family absolved of the crimes of Xaldon and Harkon, who reportedly died in a clash with Hellknights charged with bringing him to justice.

Tervon had never seen either his father nor Harkon commit these blasphemies, and believes they were framed, losing faith in the system. Tervon, by this time, had grown into a man and had inherited Xaldon and Harkon's personality, quickly rising in the ranks of gutter fighters and actors, as well as more than a few street performers.

He's usually found daily performing as a juggler entertaining crowds in front of (GM's preferred playhouse here), or possibly doing improvisational acting to bring people into the seats. He makes enough, going by the stage name Tervon duJoncleur. Tervon lives in a small tenement with his mother, Cerise, as well as their servant, Orval.

About 6 months ago, a package arrived for Tervon, an inheritance and a letter from Harkon (a will, but Tervon refuses to believe Harkon is dead), stating plainly what Tervon believed, that Harkon was framed. Taking the funds included, he slowly began preparing, for what he could not know, but for something or some way to prove his family's innocence, and to remove the stain of infamy.

Very interesting. Here is a rough initial outline of a character I would like to play, Lymnerus Verevel, Female Half-Elven Oracle of life.
Description

Spoiler:
Lymnerus is a short, tawny haired woman with faint elven features, save for a very un-elven waistline. Upon first blush few would describe her as "pretty" but her visage is not alltogether unpleasing.

Background pt.1

Spoiler:
"Oh, my story, I dont know, what was it you wanted to know about little ol' me? You know I never really considered myself all that special... well... save for the obvious," Lymnerus trails off as she motions with her eyes towards her hands. Although she wears long white gloves it is clear that she treads gingerly with them, an everpresent reminder of the severe burns she still suffers from. It is only a second, however, before she regains her voice and is again chatting away with a trademark chipper cadence as she returns to folding linens. "Mama was a real honest true elf, you know I lived up in the Barrowwood with her until I was near 17. Well, I think I was 17, they keep a different calendar there you know, never got around to workin' that one out. Well anywho you know they grow real slow like. Mama didn't know what to do with me springing up so fast an' all, she didn't ask me to leave but I knew that just wasn't the place for someone like me. So I guess it was on about 4 years ago now I made the trek down here hopin' the big ol' city had something for me, maybe find my father or his family. Well I took on with a nice little old lady who ran a flower shop , her thinking I was an elf I'd have a green thumb. Long story short cause I have to go check in on Mrs. Bartelles, well anyway after finding a good plenty of things I wern't good at and after... the unpleasantness... I found my way here to the women's house with y'all blessed souls. I don't know how they went and ran this place only the three of 'em when I got here, and not even a nurse neither. Compared to nobody I think I'm a right okay nurse, don't you say?" As Lyndarus finishes with a little chortle she turns around and taps the patient she was talking to on the tip of the nose. "Oh, you're asleep. Well at least one of us can get some around here."

Background pt2
Spoiler:
It is late at night and a single candle is lit in a small and not entirely neatly kept room. The single dresser is askew, revealing a hidden nook in an old wall. On the bed is Lymnerys holding a battered copy of The Birth of Light and Truth, written in elven, whispering to herself. "Oh Miss Dawnflower, I know, I know this is what you meant for me. I knew there was a reason you lit the life fire in me, so hot it pierced my skin and oh it burned. I knew you were testing me, makin' me ready, makin' me pure for you so you could call me later, call me now. But I don't understand, you have to help me understand, give me the light of knowledge. When Mrs. Bartelles was dying, when she could barely talk, why did she keep saying council, thieves, council of thieves. Oh her eyes had your light in them, I knew those words were meant for me but you have to show me more. You know I'll do whatever you ask since you gave me your light but... you have to show me how." Lymnerus is still for a second before she gingerly dabs tears from her eyes. Hands trembling she returns her holy words of Sarenrae to its designated hiding place, sliding her dresser back in front as quietly as she can.

It's a good AP to legitimately play a Tiefling. I'm interested.

Glad to see there's some initial interest. I don't have a specific deadline in mind for wrapping this up, but I'd like to have the party selected by the end of the week, so we can begin the game sooner rather than later.

Looking forward to seeing what everyone's got!

History:

(Questions answered in last paragraph)

My full, legal name is Enera Anacelsa, but I'd prefer it if you called me Enera, thank you. Anacelsa isn't an elven name, you see. It's just the legal name my masters burdened me with. Oh yes, I was a slave. Not any more, though. Escape? Well... you might not believe me, but I honestly don't remember whether I escaped or not! Let me explain.

I was sold into slavery in Cheliax as a young girl of 26. I can barely remember my parents, or my homeland. I remember my father putting a longsword in my hand for the first time, and I remember climbing a tree with my mother. Just... odd bits and pieces. But one day, a bunch of big men took me and brought me to a strange manor, beat me to a pulp, and told me I was a slave for the humans there. Years later, my owners told me that my parents sold me, for the gold. I've never been able to believe that. I think they're still out there somewhere, looking for me. But... maybe it's just wishful thinking. I don't even know my parents' names.

Anyway, my first masters were a noble family. They claimed to be a cadet branch of House Oberigo, but I've looked them up since then and I don't think they ever had such good connections. They definitely didn't have that kind of wealth. They bought me because they couldn't afford a halfling, and all they asked me to do was clean up the house. They sole me again when I was 80 because they went deep in debt to an alchemist's guild.

I don't know if you've heard of the Anacel Alchemical Alliance? They got kicked out of Brastlewark because of some trade dispute, and relocated to Westcrown. Even here, they were almost all gnomes. Anyway, the lord I worked for had a wicked case of devil chills, and threw himself into debt to Anacel, and they confiscated me as part of collecting his debts.

These alchemists made me clean up after their messes, which were many. But they also liked to experiment on me. They tested out all sorts of odd concoctions on me, most of which just made me sick, but some of them were really awful. I learned a lot myself from watching the process, but the experiments were starting to get gruesome, especially when the started with the injections...

Then one day, I just remember running away from their burning laboratory as fast as I could go. There were just these bright green flames behind me, and I was holding a bag full of reagents, already legging it down the road, with no memory of how I got there. I guess I blacked out from the explosion? Or did I start that explosion? And if I did, why can't I remember...

Anyway, the dottari ruled the explosion an accident, and I was free.

I'm currently working as an assistant to an alchemist, Mr. Desdox, who lives in Rego Pena. He's a nice human, and he actually pays me. He knows a lot about Egorian, but there's more going on here that he just refuses to talk about. Someone has some hold over him - not just him, but everyone important around here, it seems like. I've lived in this city for 50 years, about 30 years as a slave, and 20 years as a freewoman. This government... they can be trusted to keep the slaves in line, but if it doesn't have anything to do with oppressing the weak, what do they care? No, it will take someone else to clean up the mess around here... that sounds like my job.

Fluff:

Falgrim Holgarson is a child of the Five Kings Mountains, born into a family of respected smiths. Like his ancestors, Falgrim trained extensively to be a smith, working tirelessly alongside his older brother and father. Wanting especially to make his father proud, the young dwarf spent his spare hours away from the forge practising alongside their holds hammers, perfecting his use of the hammer as both an instrument of creation and destruction. While Falgrim grew in skill and talents, so too did his brothers ire towards his younger sibling. Eventually Falgrims brothers jealousy surfaced and he took action, sabotaging his fathers forge following Falgrims shift. Falgrims father was hysterical and cursed his youngest son, who quickly realised he had been betrayed by his brother. However, not wanting to bring further shame to his family the young hammerer took the blame and was outcast for his sacrifice.

Falgrim took his leave of the Five Kings Mountains, hammer in hand and travelled across the Inner Sea trying to reconcile his brother betrayal, but the experience had left him jaded. Months passed into years and eventually Falgrim found himself working for a blacksmith in Westcrown, still practicing the arts from his home. As time passed Falgrim begun to notice the injusties and stange events transpire around him in his new home, and the more settled the dwarf became in his new home the more he felt he could not stand by while another injustice happened before his eyes. Once more Falgrim took up his hammer, but this time with the intention of taking action!

AP path. Dotting. Council of thieves, yes.

Also, what is min/max exactly, I don't understand how that is possible.

Dotting. Thinking of going with a rogue or sorcerer...

Dotting. Thinking of a dwarven magus have to look at teh CoT stuff to set up my char sheet but it will be up soon hopefully.

Question, can we have our character be unemployed? If you ask were we get our money from, we could say given to us, as in take a money trait to fit the idea. Exploring is what he does.

Half Elven cleric of Milani, firebrand campaign trait. Will work on tonight.

@DoubleGold - Min-maxing is when players try to create an "optimized" character by minimizing certain attributes to maximize desired ones. It can make characters extremely one-dimensional and overpowered. Again, there's nothing inherently wrong with it, I just don't love characters built with that goal in mind.

And yes, your character can start out unemployed - he or she will just need a way to pay for his/her cost of living expenses in between adventures and exploits.

Silver Crusade

Attached see Crunch for Galen Goodfellow, paladin of Iomedae. His grandfather was a Chelish nobleman at the time of the Thrune rebellion and his family, supporters of the old regime, were disinherited. His grandfather was executed by the Thrune dynasty and his father imprisoned where he died. Galen was sent off to live with an uncle in Korvosa, where he trained body and soul for vengeance on the devil-worshiping Cheliax. Just into his manhood, the paladin traveled to Westcrown to see the old estate and get a lay of the land. There he heard rumor of a group that is, like him, spoiling for return to the old ways.

More back story should you require it. Thanks for your consideration.

I'm in with a Human Hexcrafter Magus, probably to multiclass with Ninja later on. Rules-wisen he will have ninja levels but flavor it would be more akin to the assassin order from Assassin's Creed games.

He will take the role of stealth, scouting and elimination of targets. By day he's a sculptor/scrimshaw vendor.

How do you feel about archetypes and multi-classing?

@DoubleGold - I'm good with both.

I'm thinking about writing up a Tiefling Vivisectionist Alchemist. Hope to write up tomorrow to show you something.

Hello, I'm potentially interested! Some questions for you:-

1) Would you allow the playtest classes from the Advanced Class Guide? In particular, the Warpriest.

2) Would you consider a non-LG Paladin, by any chance? (Of Cayden Cailean in particular, focusing on the freedom/liberation aspects.)

Your answers don't bother me either way, but I have a particular character concept in mind and I'm trying to figure out how best to build it. :P

Thanks!

I give you Bronan Krass, half elven cavalier:

His answers to the three questions:

I have lived in this miserable excuse for a kingdom for 28 years, 2 months and a day. My entire life in fact. I make my way in this world as a warden, looking after the lands of the gentry. On occasion, I am forced to take some of these well-to-do ne’er-do-wells on hunting expeditions. The cretins wouldn’t know which end of the spear goes in the boar if I weren’t there. It’s a miracle their misbegotten noble lines have made it this far if you ask me. Still, work is work, and I’ll be damned in more ways than one should I give an inch in my duties. No poachers will take game on my watch. It’s the principle of the thing.

Description:

Bronan has a slim build. Of medium height, he is hardly an imposing figure. His hair is sandy and slicked back and a perpetual veneer of stubble graces his angular features. His clothes are well cared for and neat. His demeanor is usually curt. He has little patience for nonsense.

Caltrop is a vicious rottweiler about two feet at the shoulders. He wears a protective harness.

Lisbeth sighed as she stood near the wall. Ever since her father convinced her to join the mercenary guild, she found various jobs guarding different noble houses within Westguard.

"See how the other side lives, and maybe someday you can live there, too," she mumbled to herself, in a mocking singsong voice. Her father had high dreams of moving out of the middle class and into the upper, but with no sons, he had only his daughter to take him there.

She glanced around at the opulently decorated hallway with a frown. "If only he knew what went on in these hallways," she though to herself. Standing rigidly as she heard a noise approaching from the stairway, she noticed that mistress of the house approaching with yet another gentleman caller. Her imp pet sat on her shoulder, giving Lisbeth a knowing smile as it wrapped its tail around his mistress' neck. The man and the woman exchanged pleasantries and flirts with each other as they walked by, paying no more mind to Lisbeth than if she were just another piece of furniture.

As they passed her, Lisbeth stuck her tongue out at the imp, who hissed in retort. His mistress' hand went up to soothe the creature. "Something needs to change. Father has these dreams of a Cheliax that is no longer here. Someone needs to enable the people, is what needs to happen. Someone with strength, courage, and determination. I wonder if any such people still live in Westguard," she murmured to herself as the mistress' bedroom door closed behind her.

After a little daydreaming of a future that seemed inaccessible now, she sighed yet again, "Perhaps someday. But for now, I must finish this shift. I'll meet Marik at the pub. Maybe he has more news of that silly resistance of his."

Sinder and his mother always shared an oddly close relationship for kobolds, and they managed to get by in Westcrown through the simple generosity of the locals. Sinder tried to take up street performance, but displayed little talent for it. However, his attempts at it caught the eye of a martial arts instructor to a rich local family, impressed with his dedication, balance and eye for perfecting whatever he attempted.
After about a year, Sinder and his mother were wrapping up their daily round of begging, which had been remarkably successful that day. However, on the way back to their burrow hideout, a group of guards stopped the two kobolds. Falsely accusing them of theft, Sinder's mother protected him as he ran, causing enough of a ruckus to distract the guards. It was the last Sinder ever saw of her.
Enraged, Sinder sought out the martial arts instructor, begging him profusely to take him under his wing and teach him. After explaining the fate of his mother, his teacher took pity on him, secretly taking him home and instructing him away from private eyes. Sinder's dedication to right the wrongs done to his mother, and prevent anyone else from suffering a similar fate, drove the kobold to impressive lengths, enduring trials his instructor never expected him to.
Sinder has spent the past 6 years training, and is his master's longest and most successful student. Sinder's training is drawing to a close, and he can feel a change in the wind. Something is coming, and he believes the time to finally move and right the wrongs he lived through is drawing close. Much to his master's worry; he fears Sinder may end up losing his patience and make a foolish move against the Westcrown authorities, dooming him and his many years of practice and training.

Personality:
Sinder is driven and dedicated, and once he sets his heart on a task, diverging him from it is no easy feat. Sinder holds great anger and sadness at the loss of his mother, but rather then seek out the destruction of those who wronged him, he would rather train himself up; he would do anything in his power to prevent such a tragedy from befalling another, regardless of race, class or situation.
Sinder respects all races, finding his difference in height purely aesthetic; it is not phsyical size, but the size of one's spirit that counts, and Sinder could tower over others in that department. Sinder has a realistic, but optimistic outlook; he believes that while things may be hard, they can and will get better, and he will see to it that they do.
Having grown up away from his tribe and in the company of other humans, Sinder can throw others off with his demeanor. Sinder is composed, calm and collected much of the time, and the contrast is unsettling to some. Sinder has learned not to speak around others, as his draconic tongue can frighten and unnerve people. It doesn't help that he still hasn't gained an understanding of Common, so nobody can understand him anyways. Thus, it's a rare instance when he actually speaks up.

Submitting Ettore Corna for consideration!

How long has your character lived in Westcrown? Kyras came to Westcrown in his late teens. His family had been devoted Milani worshippers were killed in a rout by Thrune loyalists. Instead of fleeing Cheliax, Kyras went deeper, to Westcrown.

What is your day job in Westcrown? (Your character needs to have a job - in between the "adventuring" you will live your life.) Works as a costumer at one of the theaters. A family friend got him the job. It allows him late hours and delivering a costume for fitting is a good excuse when stopped on the street at odd hours.

Why does your character harbor resentment or frustration against the government? As a devotee of Milani, he cannot abide tyranny, and it is very much in evidence in Westcrown.

The Exchange

I am submitting my character Aminah Mikku an Earth Wizard for this game. Here is her background and answers to your questions.

Background

Aminah Mikku was born in Qadira the child of desert nomads. Her family was caring enough although she was often overlooked compared to her older brothers and sisters of the family. However from a young age she proved to have a keen mind and eventually became an apprentice to the Geomancer of the tribe, learning the fundamental arts of dowsing and earth manipulation. When she came of age she left her tribe to join the famous Pathfinder Society, hoping to get a chance to explore the world beyond Qadira. Her travels eventually led her to Cheliax where she took up odd jobs using her Geomancy to aid local farmers and locate valuable resources. She has currently settled down in Westcrown for the time being having exhausted a majority of her money on scrolls and spell components and is seeking to earn some income in the city.

Answers

How long has your character lived in Westcrown?

Aminah has lived in Westcrown for roughly Six Months. She has chosen to stay in the area as she wants to earn some money to purchase some new spells for her spellbook and expand her repertoire and Westcrown is a good place to acquire such things.

What is your day job in Westcrown?

Aminah has skills as a Geomancer and uses her abilities to help local farmers outside the city walls. She also does some appraisals of objects and some scribe work for additional income.

Why does your character harbor resentment or frustration against the government?

She as a devotee of Sarenrae sees the suffering of the people under the iron fisted rule of the Devil-Worshiping aristocracy. She feels she can play a small part in making the lives of the common folk better by opposing the regime in the city in some shape or form.

Good morning, everyone!

@GM Alice - yes to both. I haven't looked at the Advanced Class guide at all yet, but if you choose a class from there, I'll take a closer gander. And I'm not big on alignment restrictions. I will be curious to see what a paladin of Cayden would look like, though!

@TheOddGoblin - Sure. What do you have in mind?

Glad to see so much interest. Here's the list of applicants so far. Please let me know if I've overlooked your application.

Kyras Brieross - Devastation Bob - Half-Elf Cleric of Milani
Aminah Mikku - Darkfire142 - Human Wizard

Lantern Lodge

Certainly dotting for interest. Would like to play a Diabolist raised Halfling summoner by the name of Mikhail Lightheart, who has a dragon facination. Specifically, Gold Dragon facination. Will have a crunch and background up later this evening. Certainly upbeat, helpful, witty, and very much detests the people that feel that devil summoning is a good idea.

EDIT: Do you have anything against alternate racial traits from ARG?

Concept & Background:

Divine archer/skill monkey using Inquisitor class. Aimed at achieving most of the things a rogue-type can while maintaining some divine flavor.

Althaea is a devotee of Shelyn both publicly and privately. A Westcrani native, she works at a small chapel in the Rego Sacero district. Her duties there are simply, as she is but an acolyte. She is generally helping out cleaning or preparing decorations for one of Shelyn's extravagant festivals. In her spare time, she practices painting as one of Shelyn's tenants is to find beauty in crafts.

To answer the questions above:
How long as she lived in Westcrown? All her life, she's a native Chelaxian.

What is her day job? Acolyte at a chapel to Shelyn.

Why does she harbor resentment against the government? She has no personal reason to resent them. Rather, she finds Cheliax's aristocracy cruel and tasteless. They covet merely the surface of beauty and do not understand the necessity for inner beauty. Freedom should be an essential right and the rumors of even darker corruption put up her hackles. She has no direct distaste for Asmodeus followers by themselves, but rather has a profound hatred for those who would trample on others' lives, preventing them from achieving true glory. She also believes that talking matters like this over, rather than resorting to violence, is to the best effect. Violence is sometimes necessary and she does not shirk from it, but she believes all can be redeemed if they will take the chance.

@TheStrongAngel - I don't.

I would like to throw in my glove and accept the offer. Presenting Abberforth Blackbone, the unhinged human witch who wants to see Westcrown restored to its former glory and his family name along with it.

Stats, background and questions in the profile.

The profile has the entire character, from a CoT that didn't even get to the first encounter. I may need to reduce his gold, I will have to check.

Below is his story

Stanley is a follower of Pharasma, but he works much like a hospice nurse. He considers it his job to ease the pain and suffering of those that are bound for the Boneyard to meet Pharasma. All the same he does what he can to prevent it from happening by any means other than someone living their life to the fullest (dying of old age). As such he is prepared to fight sickness, disease, injury and the like. (hedge witch)

He was set along this path by an odd friend, his pet whippoorwill (using thrush stats as closest) Vesnik. The animal is recognized by the Pharasmin church as a guide leading the dead to the Boneyard. As he sits in service to those recently dead, Vesnik stays with him, ready to deliver them. Due to the religious significance, Vesnik seems to be much more advanced than other birds of his type. (beast-bonded, eye for talent human trait)

He is a native Chelaxian, and has found that sometimes his patients are more than unwilling to discuss the nature or cause of their injury or illness. This makes it hard to treat them accordingly. He often has to convince them that he needs utmost honesty from them in order to do his best. (suspicious trait, silver-tongued human trait)

Not to mention some of them never return for follow-up examinations, and he is unable to reach them. There is a poison in the city, and he doesn't know what it is, but he wants to root it out and cleanse the city of its foul taint. (Conspiracy Hunter trait)

Also, I plan on Ettore to remain fully Sorcerer. Depending on how the game begins to go, he may try for a powerplay, taking Leadership and try to 'manage the party, staying firmly LN. If, however, he can begin to be persuaded by more than simple sap stories, his alignment may shift to Neutral as he begins to take a more antagonistic towards his hometown. He may even shift towards Lawful Good, seeing the finer qualities of order, but wishing to use them to better Westcrown (and maybe Cheliax).

when is the deadline for this?

Sovereign Court

I believe it was mentioned that it was the end of the week?

Wow, real quiet in here... I'd have expected more applications and such...

Well, there are already 15 applications by my count...

True, but many other APs get swamped with applications, and then people chit-chat or RP amongst themselves. This is quiet for an AP...

For the record, we are rehearsing a play. We are loyal citizens of Cheliax. Hail Asmodeus and long live House Thrune, am I right? (Never know if there are Hellknights listening...)

Why do Paladins fall?

So they can learn to pick themselves up. Have you tried helping one up? With all that armor,, they need a winch and team of horsemen to get them upright again!

Lucina Tilernos

Persona:
Lucina is an outspoken and driven young woman, as skilled with the blade as she is with her silver tongue. Highly tempestuous and prone to both shouting and tears, Lucina wears her emotions on her sleeve; they tend to be like a flaring candle, quick to light but just as quick to go out. She rarely holds a grudge, however, and strongly believes that dealing with problems at the source as soon as they are spotted is much healthier than letting them fester in bitterness. The young Chelaxian loves to laugh and express her joy, and likes to encourage others to do the same—the shy and quiet one is her favourite target to bother and annoy until she 'breaks' them and gets them to smile.

Lucina cannot stand to see people suffering injustice, and she is a forever friend to the downtrodden and the oppressed. Of course, in Westcrown that describes just about everyone. Stubborn and irreverent, she doesn't take crap from anyone, and will stand up to those she views as bullies even in cases where it may not be wise to do so—that said, Lucina isn't stupid, and knows not to press the point in cases where it might lead to her getting arrested or killed. (She'll be fiercely bitter and angry for some time afterwards, though.) Keenly aware of her abilities and her limits, Lucina is not afraid to be proud of her skills and display her talents whenever needed—whether that is the cut of her rapier or merely the coy smile of a pretty girl. Some may think her arrogant in this regard, but she's rarely fussed by the opinions of others, always with a strong independent streak about her. She has a tendency to make spontaneous decisions and deal with the fallout as it comes rather than think ahead, and in general is a fairly impatient and impestuous person.

Lucina tends to wear functional albeit attractive clothes, although she rarely leaves home without her trusty brown cloak—better to hide beneath it to not attract unwanted attention. She tends to go out wearing her tough leather vest at the very least because the streets are so dangerous nowadays. Though not too fond of too much jewellery, she always wears a golden locket, one that she's had since she was a child. The front is engraved with the heraldry of House Tilernos; inside, there's a much cruder carving of Cayden Cailean's holy symbol—a beer tankard—and a tiny painting of her two brothers and herself from many years ago.

Backstory:
Once upon a time, in what seems like a lifetime away to Lucina, she was once a lucky child born into a side branch of House Tilernos of Westcrown. Though not in any position to succeed (even in the bizarre circumstance that Kajen Tilernos' direct descendents were not fit to rule, she had two older brothers that would take precedence before her) in the House itself, she was raised in a grand vira with all the furnishings a young noblewoman could hope for. Her mother lectured her on the ways of speaking and presenting oneself, while her father insisted that she learn some "self-defense" and receive a broader education than merely court manners. With two older brothers in the family, Lucina's younger childhood was thus fairly rough-and-tumble, and she was quite the tomboy for much of her life (much to the chagrine of her mother).

Raised on a diet of patriotism and love of the city of Westcrown, Lucina was long absorbed in the stories of how Cheliax used to be before Aroden passed away. She was shown the crumbling churches of Rego Sacero and lectured in the theology, architecture, and history contained therein. But there was one thing Lucina could not reconcile: why, in a nation this brilliant (as her family had always told her), were all these things just that—history? Why did Hellknights walk the streets so openly? Why did they have to attend services to Asmodeus that she knew her family detested? Whenever she asked, her parents would make some vague excuse about House Thrune's rules and that this was the way of life now and yada yada yada... none of it made sense to the young Lucina, and as she grew older, the more frustrated she became.

At the ripe age of sixteen, with the streets of Westcrown becoming increasingly restricted and the recent disappearance of a beloved neighbour to the inquisitorial forces of Cheliax, Lucina confronted her parents, demanding to know why they implicitly supported the perversion of their city by not taking a stand against it. They tried to explain to her how difficult it was to do so—just look at what had happened to the Marconis across the road, they explained patiently, or that Salvaggi boy who dared to be open about his Iomedaean faith. The armies of Hell that House Thrune commanded were too powerful for anyone to stand up to. It wasn't really that bad, they said, if everyone just kept their heads down and stayed quiet... Lucina, of course, was having none of that. Disgusted with her parents after the long argument, she stormed up to her room, shoved a handfull of belongings into a bag, and stormed from the vira. Her parents pleaded with her not to go, but she ignored them and disappeared into the streets.

Of course, as a noblewoman, she had no idea how to survive on the streets. Lucina spent a few awkward weeks slumming it, quickly losing half her possessions to unscrupulous thieves who took advantage of her naive expectations of people's goodness and honesty and very nearly getting thrown in jail by the dottari for breaking curfew or loitering laws. She was forced to wise up quite quickly in her couple of weeks of living on the streets, and probably would've gotten into some truly awful situations if not for a chance meeting of one middle-aged man by the name of Nicomede. Nic Goretti came across the young girl quite by chance one late afternoon—she'd been desperately trying to find a place to hide indoors overnight, conscious of the curfew, but all the regular places were either full or otherwise not interested in housing her tonight. Desperate, Lucina stumbled inside a worn-down tavern by the name of the Sleepy Hound and asked the barkeep if he would mind if she stayed the night. She'd clean the kitchens or something, she said—won't be any trouble, and she'll be gone by dawn the next morning. Nic had smiled at her, offered her a much-needed bath and change of clothes, and sat her down at the bar with a warm mug of mead and a meal on the house. "Tell me your story," the older man had said in a voice that was smooth like honey. "A pretty little girl like you wouldn't normally be out on the streets like this. Where's your family? You run away from home?"

Perhaps it was the mead that made her talk, or the offer of such kind hospitality, but Lucina opened up to Nic, who thoughtfully and quietly listened to everything that had happened to her in the last month—her run-in with the dottari, her experience with awful tiefling thieves who very nearly assaulted her, her argument with her parents... her realisation of just how privileged she was up in the ivory tower of nobility, and just how awful it was down here on the streets of Westcrown. How her experiences had merely solidified her desire to help people and restore the city to what it must surely have once been in the past. The words just kept tumbling out of her mouth, and in the end Lucina wound up crying in the old barkeep's strong arms. He put her to bed, and in the morning, he offered her a job there at the Sleepy Hound. "You obviously need to get stuff sorted out. You'll have a bed here—small one, mind—and the work's not gonna pay too well... but I'm sure it'll be enough for now."

Over the next year and a half, Lucina grew to love her time working a honest day's job at the Sleepy Hound. Some time into her work there, she realised that there was more to the place than just a simple tavern—rather, it was a hidden shrine to Cayden Cailean, and a meetingplace of those of the faith or those who would hope for liberation from the shackles of Cheliax She started to attend the small gatherings of Caydenites where Nic would tell sermons and provide some breif fun and joy in the lives of the oppressed; drinking was never her forte, though, and the ex-noble's weak constitution resulted in many a blackout and a strong hangover the next day. Though the tenets of Cayden Cailean are few, Lucina found herself identifying with the core concept of the religion: do good, enjoy life, have a drink now and then, and stand up for what you believe in.

Now that she's a relatively stable member of Wiscrani society once more, and has even come to terms with her new faith in the Lucky Drunk, Lucina has started to feel her previous itchings of incredible dissatisfaction. Down here in the dregs of society, life was even worse than it was back in the high life of the Tilernos family home. Recently, she's started spreading words of dissention amongst those who come to the secretive religious meetings every week or two. For most, it's too dangerous to consider; but some have echoed her sentiment, telling rumours of some individuals who are trying to start up something similar... Lucina has begun a covert search for information, believing that a group working together could certainly affect the sort of changes she's wanted to see for many years now.

The Questions:
These are all covered in her backstory, but the short story is this...

Lucina grew up in Westcrown, as did her parents and her parent's parents, probably way back through to the establishment of the city. She's a Wiscrani through and through, and is intensely patriotic—that's why she's so disappointed in how House Thrune has "barbarised" and "despoiled" her beloved home. Though originally living in her family's manor, Lucina has recently (within the last two years) abandoned them due to differences in belief and now lives in a small flat in Rego Pena.

Currently, she works as a waitress/bar attendant at a small tavern in Rego Pena named the Sleepy Hound. The tavern is known amongst the faithful as hosting a small shrine of Cayden Cailean out in its back cellars, beneath a trapdoor hidden underneath a pile of empty crates. There, the braumeister priest Nicomede 'Nic' Goretti illicitly shepherds the few in the city still dedicated to the god of strength, freedom, and wine.

Why does Lucina harbour resentment against the government? Jeez, why wouldn't she? Her family raised her on stories of Cheliax's greatness, of Westcrown's might and beauty in the days before Thrune's ascension, and the utter farce that is modern Westcrown leaves her feeling betrayed and bitter. As a Caydenite, too, she's offended and affronted by the gross misjustice of a city that is not free; the people deserve to be able to express themselves in any way that does not cause gross harm to another! (Not to mention she'd like to be able to be open about her religious ties as well.) All in all, she is driven by the desire to see Westcrown returned to its days of former glory and out of the clutches of evil and oppression.

At the moment, I'm tossing up between a CG Paladin of Cayden Cailean or an Inquisitor of the same. Weapon Finesse-with-a-rapier style build for sure, and I'd be looking to get an agile weapon at some point (hopefully). I'm honestly okay with either class depending on what the party needs more, so if it's not too much of a problem I'd prefer to withhold a stat block until I see the rest of the party (assuming I'm accepted!). Sort of leaning the paladin though--and you did say you were curious to see how one worked. :P

Regardless of the class details, Lucina will take the Westcrown Firebrand campaign trait, and likely the Reckless trait (giving Acrobatics as a class skill) as well.
