As you crawl through the door and down the tunnel into the sewers, you see and hear Janiven trying to delay the Hellknights by bolting closed the kitchen door and pulling down shelves to create obstacles. She then follows the group down into the darkness.

DC15 Knowledge:Local or Engineering:

Westcrown’s sewer system is a marvel of ancient engineering, designed by the same geniuses who built the Arch of Aroden in Corentyn. Though Westcrown is barely above sea level, the cleverly designed sewer tunnels continue to carry Westcrown’s filth away, and for the most part, citizens never think about the sanitation process that keeps the city relatively free of waste-borne illness.

Rainwater enters the sewers from tiny barred grates in the streets, most so small that a halfling child couldn’t squeeze through, and travels through an angled pipe that directs the runoff to the closest tunnel’s drainage side, exiting about a foot above the peak flow-level of the sewer channel. Tide-powered wheels on the northwest and northeast coast draw water upward from the river and bay, causing a slow trickle into the sewers and keeping solid matter from building up over time, creating a slow current flowing toward the southern part of the city. Three points along the southern edge of the sewers bear similar tidewheels, each connected to a mechanical screw that slowly pumps waste downward into a mile-long underwater pipe that empties downriver, its length protected by check valves to prevent water from flowing upward into the sewage system.

The sewer mechanics require very little maintenance and have hand-cranks for manual operation should an unforeseen circumstance render the automatic devices inoperable. The build of the sewers ensures that the tons of waste generated by the city never risk contaminating it.

Entrances to (and thus exits from) the sewers are relatively rare. Since the sewers are so well engineered, the need for cleaning and maintenance is lower than in most cities. Entrances consist of rusted metal ladders leading up from the sewer to rectangular iron trap doors 10 feet
above—unfortunately, the city of Westcrown keeps all sewer entrances securely locked in order to prevent undesirables from using the sewers to move through the city with ease.

"Thank you for the light, Stanley - can anyone else conjure up any lights for us?" Janiven asks, quickly stepping forward to lead the group down along a 20-foot-long, 5-foot-wide hallway to a simple wooden door. Once all have passed through the door, she bars it shut behind her.

With the small light created by Stanley's conjuration (and anyone else who contributes), you see the sewer tunnel running to the left and right. Morosino moves close to the wall and points out a crudely drawn sword. "We created these marks when we were scouting the sewers," he explains. "They always point in the direction of the safe house."

"Indeed, Morosino. Should we get separated, gods forbid, keep an eye out for these marks. They'll guide you in the way you should go," Janiven says, as she moves towards the wall on the other side of the door and pushes aside a rock. "Good. They're still here," she says, pulling out a small bundle wrapped in cloth. Opening it, she reveals a small cache of healing potions. "Put these here a couple weeks ago in case of emergency. I hadn't intended to use them so quickly."

She hands over two potions to each of you, leaving two for her and Morosino. You've each gained two potions of cure light wounds. "Let's be off," she says, walking in the direction the sword's pointing. As you walk, it doesn't take long for the noise of the Hellknights back at Vizio’s Tavern to diminish “They might take a few minutes to search in the tavern, but some are going to follow us down here after they grab a lantern or make torches. They might even try to infiltrate the sewers ahead of us if they can guess our route. We need to keep moving."

Ok - so this will be two posts in a row without strong hooks for action - but I need to know what you're all up to in this dank, dark place. Also, let me know a preferred marching order and what you're carrying, if anything.

Enera's fingers tap along the hilt of her longsword, which she holds cautiously in front of her. She holds it with two hands, although her mind keeps wandering to the pouches at her belt, and a little special something she cooked up this morning for an emergency.

Since Enera's elven eyes adjust so easily to the dim light given off by Stanley's spell, she sees no need to burden herself with a torch. She walks without speaking, trying to make as little noise as possible, and keeping her eyes open for anything dangerous, and her ears clear for any sound of trouble behind them. She's not about to rush ahead of everyone else, but she keeps close to the head of the group. Enera probably doesn't want to be in front, but second would be ideal.

Iolana carefully tucks the potions into the folds of her scarf. "My thanks, Janiven. It's clear that your group has excellent planners--I'm almost insulted that I haven't heard from you before." She smiles. "Although I'm more relieved. Come, let's go." She strides off, apparently unconcerned about the muck on her dress, squinting in the darkness.

*sigh* I knew being subtle would come back to bite me... :P At the moment, all Iolana has on her are her street clothes, pocketed scarf, the potions, and her holy symbol. She's bold but not stupid, so she'll let someone more armored or armed go first, but she'd likely be pushing ahead slightly. Maybe third in line? Tactically, keeping her close to the center will get her in a good position for healing bursts if needed.

Lucina grimaces at the encroaching scent of the sewer, wrinkling her nose and covering her mouth with one hand. She'd never smelt anything so bad in her life! Eventually, though, in the interests of keeping the rest of the wannabe-insurgents safe, she is forced to breathe in the stench to make use of her left hand.

"Cheers," she says with a small smile at the offering of potions, roughly shoving them in her backpack for later use (although Lucina does hope it ultimately doesn't come to that). "I'll make sure to pay you back for them sometime, Janiven."

While rummaging around in her backpack, the young paladin realises she has something useful in here, actually... "Oh! I forgot I had these in here, just in case I got stuck out after dark." Lucina withdraws a simple brown rod with a small bulb on the end; she gently raps it on the wall of the sewer, causing the bulb to glow like a torch. "I've got two of these, if Stanley's magic doesn't cut it," she informs the group with a grin. With buckler on her left arm and sunrod in her left hand, Lucina finds herself free to wield her trusty rapier in her right, ready for danger.

I'll take point, unless someone else wants to, carrying a sunrod and my rapier (and buckler).

Looking about, thinking about how the sewers are laid out above ground and thinking of any ways he can move through this and not smell like... well... what he smells like. He is also noting how Janiven's group is hiding the swords and where they would be marked.

STanley is not a meleeist by any means and would prefer to be not quite last, closer to the middle for safety. He will walk at the back if others want to be further forward.

Stanley nods in appreciation for the potions, looking like he is trying to talk as little as possible while he controls his breathing. He detaches an odd bird-like mask from his belt, pulls a bit of sponge from out of the nose, before asking "Anyone have clean water they would be willing to moisten this with?" Regardless if anyone complies, he fits the sponge back into the long pointed nose piece, and slips the odd mask over his face. Muffled from under the mask, he suggests, "You know, the amount of unhealthy toxins that are within a city's sewers is immeasurable. I would suggest you all wrap something over your mouth and nose, and try to avoid getting any of it into your system. This includes any cuts or scrapes."

As a doctor/medic, he has all his usual treatment gear on him, so his equipment in the profile is what he walks around with. He has a quarterstaff in hand, which he frequently use as a walking stick as he travels to all his patients.

Also, he has a -2 penalty to sight/sound based perception with his mask on.

Tervon smirks at Stanley's face, but, realizing his wisdom, he pulls out a kerchief after he accepts his potions and holds it to his face as they travel.

I agree with you, Stanley, but I'm less worried about toxins at the moment than the stink of the place.

Iolana wrinkles her nose, though it looks more like disdain than revulsion. "Well, you seem to know what you're talking about...I suppose I'll do as you say." Leeka needs to be out close to the front where she can dash out and strike, causing confusion where she can. Lucina turns around and smiles at Iolana's offer, gladly handing over the sunrod for the priestess to handle. She pauses, however, pursing her lips and eyeing up Iolana appraisingly. After a few moments, Lucina reaches for the dagger sheathed at her waist and unbuckles it from the clasp holding it in place. This she hands on over to the Varisian woman.

"Take this too," she says plainly. "I'll do my best to protect you, but in the worst case scenario... well, you never know what might happen."

You walk for several minutes, following the numerous twists and turns of the dark sewers. The smell, for those who haven't taken precaution against it, is horrendous, but causes no ill-effects apart from an ever-present gag reflex - at least for now.

At several intersections and junctions, it takes only a moment for Janvien to spot the rough sword marks, all about shoulder height for an average-sized human, but as you press on, you notice that Janiven appears to grow slightly distressed. As you take yet another left turn - apparently arriving back where you were only moments before, she stops in frustration. "We didn't have time to mark every intersection, but I know we've done more than this!" she says, peering into the darkness for some sign of recognition. "I wonder if someone - or something - is removing them?"

She stands in silence for a moment - but that silence is interrupted by the sound of scuttling footsteps. It doesn't appear to be the Hellknights - unless they've removed their heavy boots - but it does appear to be heading in your direction. "We don't want to mess with whatever's down here!" Janiven whispers, quickly making the decision to press forward across a narrow walkway above the running filth.

Fortunately, the sound of footsteps quickly fades behind you, but unfortunately, this direction seems to have taken you the wrong way, as no intersections or swords are to be seen. With no other alternative, you continue to press forward, eventually stepping into a large, oddly shaped room with four exit tunnels and multiple sewer channels. One part of a channel connects to a long cesspit. Several large wooden planks form a simple bridge over another section of the channel.

As Janiven approaches the plank she stops and holds up her hand. "Listen...what is that noise?" As if on cue, you hear what sounds like a dozen small creatures emerging from the ooze and scurrying onto the slick stone walkway.

Leeka, Lucina and Enera:

Moments after the sound, you see a dozen small creatures emerge from the ooze. They look at first glance like a colorful, animate blob of slime, but their thin insectoid legs and eyestalks suggest it is a more advanced creature.

Janiven curses. "Shit. We've walked right into a nest of torbles. Prepare yourselves!"

Cue Final Fantasy combat music...

Round 1
Current Map

Stanley, Tervon and Iolana - you can't actually see any creatures yet, as you're too far back in the tunnel.

The walkway is slippery, so any Acrobatics check become more difficult, and passing by your comrades counts as difficult terrain. It is possible to leap across the channel with a DC15 Acrobatics check. Failure means you end up in the sludge.

The bugs are diminutive. It adds +4 to their AC.

Iolana takes the knife from Lucina without a word, and buckles it to her waist. I mislike being indebted to this noble girl, she thinks grumpily to herself; a few minutes later, the irritation boils out in a comment: "You need not concern yourself with protecting me, though I appreciate the knife. Rest assured--the next time we meet the order of the Rack, they will have my morningstar to contend with."

Iolana raises the sunrod high and peers ahead. "Oh, thorns. What's a torble?"

Lucina frowns for a moment at Iolana's reaction, once again forced to wrack her brain unsuccessfully for what exactly she'd done to offend the other woman. Ultimately she defaults to her usual reaction: an apologetic but friendly smile. "Well, let's just hope nothing bad happens before then!"

---------

"I'm guessing a torble's one of these weird bug things up here!" she shouts back to Iolana, attempting to spear the one ahead of her on the tip of her rapier. Alas, the slimy little thing is far too quick for her, and it scuttles out of the way.

Rapier Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9

Hoping to allow the others more room to advance down the sewer channel, Lucina recklessly moves ahead, trying to step over the strange insectoids as she passes them and avoid their retaliatory strikes.

Moving R-U-U-R-R

As these are diminutive creatures, I can move through/into their squares (although Leeka can't - you've gotta be at least 3 sizes bigger. Source)

This provokes an AoO from the four torbles whose squares I move through, but it'll at least open up more room for the back lines!

Tervon pockets his kerchief and draws his shortsword, leaving one hand free and moving into a mock fencing stance.

I believe this is a move and standard action. Trying NOT to leave evidence of passing through here if we can help it. If it's not both, he'll advance but not attack.

"Outside of living in sewers, I do hope their stink doesn't stay with us."

I was under the impression we were keeping to initiative order. Leeka going before Enera would affect Enera's turn, and probably vice versa. I'm going to assume Leeka hasn't gone yet.

Enera makes a face. As an alchemist, she's used to all sorts of odors, but this stench is just offensive, and the torbles don't make it any better. "I suppose a little sulfur can't make this reek any worse," she comments. Acting fast, she uses her free hand to take a vial of translucent orange catalyst from a pouch at her side, adds a dash of yellow powder to it, grasps the concoction in her fist for just a moment, and then hurls it at the center of the throng of creatures to her left.

Aiming at the square three up and two to the left of Enera - not trying to hit the bug, just going for an AC of 5 to inflict splash damage.

Bomb Attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8

It lands in a fiery burst, catching six of the creatures. 4 fire damage to each of the torbles on the left; DC 13 Reflex save for half.

Iolana draws the knife she borrowed from Lucina and, grimly determined, makes her way forward until she can reach a bug.

If it's possible to do this without squeezing through anyone else's squares, she does so (hopefully, since I go last!). If she runs out of movement before reaching a bug, she moves as far as she can. This should be two move actions, so...end of turn. Also, note that speed is 30' and AC/T/FF is 10/10/10 until I get my armor back.

Lucina's rapier misses wildly, but she manages to slip past the insectoid-like creatures without provocation - the group's arrival seems to have caught them slightly unaware (the creatures are flat-footed and aren't granted an AOO).

Enera makes quick work of half the group of nasty bugs - her well-placed throw lands squarely in the middle of the creatures and splashes onto each of them, getting enough of the flame-induced mixture to ignite their oozy flesh ablaze. The fires quickly die down, but so too do the bugs.

Janiven quickly steps into action, drawing her finely honed longsword, taking a short step forward and stabbing at the torble directly in front of her.

1d20 + 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 = 11

Unfortunately, she isn't quick enough to poke the bug, and her sword clangs against the concrete.

Leeka takes a short step to her right (I took some liberties - hope that's ok) and attempts to squash the bug with her fist. It makes a satisfying squishing sound as she successfully lands the blow, killing it instantly.

I figured Tervon's putting away the handkerchief (move action) and the drawing of the rapier (standard action) were his actions for the round), since his BAB is not +1 and he can't move and draw, so he stays still for the moment. Longsword: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 71d8 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7

This time, she aims too high, missing her foe completely.

Male Human Rogue | AC 15 T 12 FF 13 | HP 8/8 | F +0 R +5 W +0 | Init +2 | Perc +4

Tervon will stab at the one in front of him.

attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18
damage if hits: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8

"Invigorating chase this is. Caught up with terrible acidic creatures and running from the hellknights. What a night!"

"Not a night I would normally choose to participate in," Lucina quips as the dratted thing yet again evades her jabbing rapier attack. This was starting to become a little embarrassing... "Argh! Stupid bugs! Just go away!"

Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7 God I am rolling awfully!

"Gnah!" Iolana grunts as another torble nips at her exposed ankle. "Stealth be damned, this is the last time I go on a mission without my armor!"

Dagger attack: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19
Dagger damage: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

She stabs down with her dagger again, this time getting a satisfying squelch. "Die, you horrible beasts!"

Assuming that the one in front of her dies, she then moves up two to flank with Lucina.

Male Human Hex Channeler Hedge Witch 1 (AC/Mage Armor: 12/16 [T: 12 FF: 10/14] | HP: 6/6 | F+0, R+2, W+3 | Init: +2 |Perc: +1/+3 [Vesnik: +5])

Both surprised and frustrated at how hard the little things are to hit, he swears under his breath and muffled by the odd mask. Again he tries to squish the thing with his staff, but for oozes, they move way too fast for his clumsy strike.

Attack, 1d20 ⇒ 3
Wow, we are all rocking these rolls. Hopefully this fight just allows us to purge a lot of the low rolls from our profiles... *fingers crossed*

Janiven Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9

Two more of the torbles fall to your attacks. Janiven curses as she once again misses the small bug in front of her.

Attack on Lucina: 1d20 ⇒ 13
Attack on Janiven: 1d20 ⇒ 13
Attack on Morosino: 1d20 ⇒ 19 = Hit
Attack on Enera: 1d20 ⇒ 9

Once more, the bugs pinchers find their way into Morosino's leg. He moans and falls to his knees. He starts coughing and wheezing. "I...think...I'm...allergic..." he manages in between breaths.

Female Elf Alchemist 1 | HP 12/12 | AC 15, touch 12, flatfooted 13 | CMD 15 | Fort +3, Ref +4, Will +0 (+2 ench) | Init +2

Enena looks back at Morosino. "Stay calm," she advises, seeing the nasty wound in his leg. "This should be over quickly - I hope!" She turns back to the torble, and swings again.

Leeka shifts to her right and tries to stomp on the one she can flank.

Male Human Rogue | AC 15 T 12 FF 13 | HP 8/8 | F +0 R +5 W +0 | Init +2 | Perc +4

Tervon is going to attempt to flank the torble nearest Janiven, tumbling and jumping as necessary.

Attack (flank): 1d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 5 + 2 = 10 Siiiigh

Lucina is becoming increasingly desperate as she proves little apart from her severe incompetence to the rest of the group. That, and the others are taking a lot of pain from the little bugs, and she's frustrated that she can do so little. Yet again her attack goes wide, and she flushes in both anger and embarrassment.

Male Human Hex Channeler Hedge Witch 1 (AC/Mage Armor: 12/16 [T: 12 FF: 10/14] | HP: 6/6 | F+0, R+2, W+3 | Init: +2 |Perc: +1/+3 [Vesnik: +5])

Stanley grows worried as the boy takes another hit, "Pharasma, the fate of this child lays before you, please show me that this is not his time." He helps the boy to stand, allowing his healing energies to flow into him.

Iolana glances over at Morosino as Stanley lays hands on him. "Stay strong, Morosino. The Everbloom will not let us perish this day. We are almost out of peril!" Viciously, she stabs down at the torble between her and Lucina.

Attack (flanking): 1d20 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 + 2 = 11
Damage: 1d4 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6

Yikes. Not sure if that works or not...

With the group and the pbp situation and the Dropbox map disappearing before I saved it, I'm going to end the encounter with some voiceover.

The group finishes the Torbles in short order, but is quite weary from the encounter.

Janiven, breathing heavy, comes to check on Morosino, who is still lying on the ground, next to a puddle of ooze that the Torble left behind.

"While we wait for Morosino to regain himself, I'm looking for another sword, which should be on one of the walls or along the edge of the sewer. Can you help me search?"

Anyone wanting to help search please do. A simple, "I'm helping Janiven tend Morosino" would also work. This search is to help us start progressing again.

The sounds of scuttling footsteps draws nearer as you all search.

Iolana strides quickly over to Morosino, kneeling with Janiven as she puts one hand to the rose pendant at her neck. "Stay close if you are hurt," she calls, then closes her eyes. Everbloom, bless your warriors. Let the pure of heart receive tending for their wounds, and blessings for the battles to come. A pearly white light, only just visible to the naked eye, seems to shine from Iolana's skin as she focuses, erasing wounds and healing bruises on whomever it touches.

Leeka, who is not hurt, helps Janiven look for another sword.

Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16

Stanley worries more for the boy at this point, helping the young man stay on his feet, and reassuring him, "It appears that Pharasma has not foretold your life to end here, take comfort in that." He truns and speaks to the bird on his shoulder, "Vesnik, would you lend your keen eyesight to their search for the image of a sword?" The bird levels an even-toned chirp, neither high of excitment, nor rushed in anger. The bird flutters, ruffling his own feathers, but doesn't take flight. Instead, he stays on Stanley's shoulder, and just peers about the room with the jerky sideways looks birds give.
