Veekly replies to Iolana's rather angry sounding inquiries.
"The Boss runs the setup. The market runs itself. The Boss is good to us Dark Ones, gives us a place to sleep that's dark most of the day, and safe enough to hide from the things that aren't so nice at night here in the Rego Cader."

He thinks about Iolana's question about approaching the Lair unseen.

"Well, if it were just the temple of Erastil, I'd say approach from the southwest, as the bell tower has a harder time seeing that side. They've got a couple of buildings on that side I'm sure are used just to make sure there aren't any surprises. Really, the cover of darkness itself would be a surprise, but it's right dangerous here at night. Hell Dogs, Leurocotta, minor devils, even the odd demon or vampire run the place at night. Shadow beasts are the least of our worries."

Stanley is intrigued by the market just as much as he is disturbed by it. A small community of sorts that has managed to eke out a life under these less than ideal conditions, even if it is one predicated on the notion of an illicit marketplace. Then again, what the Free Citizens are doing is also very illegal, so who is he to judge their actions based purely on legality. His thought is interrupted by Iolana's last question, "More than that, Mr. Veekly, would you happen to have a closer than approximate count of how many members the Bastards are composed of, and whether or not they are amenable to being reasoned with?" He once again leads toward his goal of negotiating an agreement.

Male Half-Elf Rogue(Thug) 2 / Fighter (Mutation Warrior/Martial Master/Eldritch Guardian) 1

Byron looks around the market, at turns intrigued and appalled by the things that he sees.

However, the discussion regarding the Bastards brings his attention back into focus.

"Well, I certainly have no objection to acquiring a discount for something that I was already planning to assist with in any case..."

He then turns to the others.

"If they are all Tieflings, we should probably acquire something to combat their Darkness creating ability... I prefer to be able to see whatever is trying to shank me."

Male Half-Elf Archaeologist Bard 3 / Ranger 1 [28/28hp | AC: 18/13/15 | F+4 R+8 W+4 (+2 vs enchant) | Init +3 | low-light vision; Per +10, SM +5] [Luck: 8/9]

Dario watches the market activities as the others question Veekly. At one point he would have been horrified at a place such as this, hawking probably a fair number of stolen goods. Religious and cultural artifacts often made it to places such as this to be sold to private collections or, even worse, to people who barely understood their significance. Either option deprived scholars of studying them and unlocking ancient history for all to know. Imagine if scrolls depicting the early days of the Church of Aroden were hidden in a chest that was sold to a mere tailor!

Now however, he understood that place such as this helped the common people eke out their only possible existence. And many of the scholars he so admired may not be worthy of those artifacts anyway. Most of them would rather keep their tenured offices than discuss actual truth. The Thrune influence had corrupted more than just the law.

He turns back to the conversation at hand. "We would need some powerful magic to do that. Their abilities overcome simply light spells like I know. Though perhaps a Everburning Torch would do it. I hear they resist some magic too."

"If we're intent on subverting these Bastards of Erebus, it does sound like the Temple of Erastil is where we need to go. Mr. Veekly, do you know what the Bastards want or intend? Perhaps we can use that against them."

M Dwarf Barb8hp94/94AC20/T12/FF18,F12R5W6

Dwarves can see in the deepest darkness, so I can help if that happens, although getting that torch sounds like an excellent idea.

"The Bastards want to have control of the city's underworld by the look of it. I'm certain they will be more 'reasonable' at some point. Unfortunately, the Rundottari haven't an interest in them, and, they haven't an interest in making themselves 'more known than necessary' to the Rundottari. Unfortunately, they're just not prone to talking, more of the ordering others around types."

Veekly looks at the group, and looks around the market.

"You'll be able to find a few things to counter the darkness 'round the market. Even a few... pleasant surprises are likely. While many of the folk here are filth, plain an simple, some are trying to run an honest business just like you would out on the other side of the wall. Whether cultural, or racially-based, some of these vendors have some great things for sale, and they don't track it like the rest of the city does... what with all those taxes and all those Asmodean spies about. They certainly work hard for them, and not everyone is a thief, the Boss guarantees that."

M Dwarf Barb8hp94/94AC20/T12/FF18,F12R5W6

Who here offers items with magical enchantments? Like the light magic we are seeking?

Veekly looks at Colgrim, thinking about his question a bit.
"Well, for the temporary things, we've got The Alchemist, a blindfolded guy who sells potions. He wears nice robes, though. Then there's Doctor Aerelien, a divine kind of guy. The tall guy, over there" Veekly points to a rather tall being with a hooded robe. The being has four arms and is smiling broadly and happily working his wares as those few in the know come to purchase from him. "That's Tegomalan. He just appears each night we do the market, out of thin air, his wares going with him. Say what you may, he sells quality for sure. He's also much more comfortable here than in the city proper, as they may take a dislike to his kind... much like most to mine." He looks to Iolana as he says that.

"We also have a few who have... obtained... things of interest. You may run into Legora, who tends to be able to get some harder to find things, and he usually likes to barter rather than sell for some reason or another. Something about finding things of value and getting other things in return. Most of us find him a little crazy."

M Dwarf Barb8hp94/94AC20/T12/FF18,F12R5W6

Colgrim looks at his companions. I'm rather tapped out of funds unfortunately, Dr.Aerelien and Tegomalan look to be good choices for what we need.

"Hmph." Iolana snorts, clearly not impressed by Veekly's attempt at playing the victim. "Well, thank you for your time, sir. Come friends; I doubt we have the funds to barter with these folk, so we may as well leave. We will have the Everbloom's light itself to guide our cause."

M Dwarf Barb8hp94/94AC20/T12/FF18,F12R5W6

Colgrim follows

Does everyone leave, or does anyone want to peruse the dusk market? Where to once you are leaving?

M Dwarf Barb8hp94/94AC20/T12/FF18,F12R5W6

We could sell one of the masterwork short swords for cash to get a continual light spell or Everburning Torch(Just 110 GP).

Dario pulls out the scroll they found earlier in the sewers. "I totally forgot. This is a scroll of Continual Flame. We could use it to create our own Everburning Torch. Or make something else shed light forever."

M Dwarf Barb8hp94/94AC20/T12/FF18,F12R5W6

Perfect for the non dwarves here.

Iolana snorts. "That would've been good to know before--but you're right, it will be useful. I think that tiefling we saw wandering around on our way into this market must have been the Bastards' lookout. If no one here wants anything else, I suggest we cast the scroll's spell and attempt to capture him. He can give surely give us more details than Veekly about the Bastards' organization."

As they head out, Iolana glances swiftly around to see if there appear to be any slave markets here...

Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11

M Dwarf Barb8hp94/94AC20/T12/FF18,F12R5W6

Very well. I'm afraid I am not a sneaky sort but can bash him around so he stays still.

Male Half-Elf Rogue(Thug) 2 / Fighter (Mutation Warrior/Martial Master/Eldritch Guardian) 1

Byron nods.

"Subduing people is something that I think we do well..."

Male Human Hex Channeler Hedge Witch 1 (AC/Mage Armor: 12/16 [T: 12 FF: 10/14] | HP: 6/6 | F+0, R+2, W+3 | Init: +2 |Perc: +1/+3 [Vesnik: +5])

Stanley adds abruptly, on mention of using the scroll, "I would posit that it be cast upon something that is easily concealed if necessary, like a small object or a sheathable weapon. You never realize the times you need the dark until you are faced with a light you cannot extinguish. Secondly, it would be best in the possession of one amongst us who stays to the middle of the collective. This will allow a greater distribution of light amongst the group, and limit the risk of, literally, leaving someone in the dark."

M Dwarf Barb8hp94/94AC20/T12/FF18,F12R5W6

Perhaps Dario or yourself?

Iolana notes that there are two slave markets, one with some fairly nicely-dressed ones, and one that appears to have abused them. She notes that no one is going near the latter one.

The plan is to go to the Bastards' hideout tonight? If so, then once everyone posts that they are ready and where the continual light was cast, I will post (planning to post on Saturday night at latest).

Male Human Hex Channeler Hedge Witch 1 (AC/Mage Armor: 12/16 [T: 12 FF: 10/14] | HP: 6/6 | F+0, R+2, W+3 | Init: +2 |Perc: +1/+3 [Vesnik: +5])

He lifts a finger as if to indicate a correction, "I would not agree, per se, as he has a weapon that can be sheathed but unfortunately needs to be if he uses his bow. Wherein he would likely use his bow if situated withn the midpoint. Unless he has an object that can remain visible unheld, but covered if needed, much like how I use my light on my Holy Symbol. As for myself, I am often the last amongst the group, having no eagerness to be within melee distance of a conflict. What about Barnabus or Leeka?"

M Dwarf Barb8hp94/94AC20/T12/FF18,F12R5W6

Being last isn't always a good idea, you are rather lightly armored and armed so if someone with a sword comes up behind us, well you would be much more vulnerable.

Sounds okay to me. to head out

If we hit the Bastard's tonight, keep in mind we are in it until we win or lose. If we retreat, we'll be running right out into the darkness and are a long ways from any safe haven.

Male Human Hex Channeler Hedge Witch 1 (AC/Mage Armor: 12/16 [T: 12 FF: 10/14] | HP: 6/6 | F+0, R+2, W+3 | Init: +2 |Perc: +1/+3 [Vesnik: +5])

Stanley nods. "I am fully cognizant of the risks associated with being in the back, and am merely looking at it based on the odds. We have, as of yet, maintained a strong enough front, that there have been no enemies left to approach from behind."

On Colgrim's second point he suggests, as always, his capabilites of a non-violent nature. "When and if we can find the one they say roams the market for questioning, I have prepared a means of magically compelling friendship. With this we may be able to not only secure all the details of their base of operations, but at least keep from having to fight him, and reduce our enemies' numbers by one."

M Dwarf Barb8hp94/94AC20/T12/FF18,F12R5W6

Iolana's mouth tightens when she spots the slave markets...both of them. I will empty this place. I will route the slavers. I will-- The group's discussion pulls her back, and she shakes her head, confused. I--I have to do something! But...this is also...

Aloud, she merely says, "Agreed. If we can find this Bastard in the market, Stanley's plan sounds good. If not--the straightforward way."

Leeka pulls out a shuriken, offering it for the light spell.

It's a free or non-action to draw a piece of ammunition. Cheesy, perhaps?

Looks like Leeka is offering the Shuriken for the light spell. Dario and Byron need a 'ready' post as well. Anyone disagree with Leeka's idea for the light spell?

M Dwarf Barb8hp94/94AC20/T12/FF18,F12R5W6

No problems

Male Half-Elf Rogue(Thug) 2 / Fighter (Mutation Warrior/Martial Master/Eldritch Guardian) 1

Ready, as long as we have the Continual Light :-)

Male Half-Elf Archaeologist Bard 3 / Ranger 1 [28/28hp | AC: 18/13/15 | F+4 R+8 W+4 (+2 vs enchant) | Init +3 | low-light vision; Per +10, SM +5] [Luck: 8/9]

Dario nods at the choice of a shuriken. "Not bad. Throwable too. Why don't you keep it Leeka?"

I'm ready

The sounds of the market fade as you leave the shady, 'free' market behind.

So, as you all approach the whereabouts of the hideout, you note that the area is quiet, much more quiet than the dusk market. You are all feel the weight of the territory change, something you hadn't noticed before. The daylight you all enjoyed is quickly fading, and the market will be ending soon. In the darkest reaches, you swear that you see movement, only to look and find nothing there.

The fact that this is later than most of you are out, Colgrim excepted, makes this that much more frightening than usual. Where will you go when darkness falls, what horrors do the Bastards have in store for you?

The approach is quiet, although the Tieflilng carrying the large greatsword has limited his patrol, merely patrolling to either side of the Shrine to Erastil, staying near enough to run from the horrors of the night if need be.

You are about a block away from the temple, near one of the Bastards' buildings that Veekly identified for you. No map... my map time has been dead for a while due to home repairs among other things. I'm trying to get maps for this adventure so I can post SOMETHING online for you all.

Next post will be Tuesday, due to various obligations tomorrow.

M Dwarf Barb8hp94/94AC20/T12/FF18,F12R5W6

Iolana grimaces. "Not I, I'm afraid. Perhaps someone smaller..." She glances at Leeka and smiles. "Would you like to take this task on?"

Stealth: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (19) + 12 = 31

Leeka makes sure the continual flame shuriken is in her pocket and covered, then melds with the gloom.

Im not quite sure what task you want her to perform, though. Finding a way into the Shrine of Erastil? Checking doors? Whatever it is, she does it very quietly.

M Dwarf Barb8hp94/94AC20/T12/FF18,F12R5W6

I believe we should attack the tiefling with stealth so we don't alert any of his allies. So have the stealthy PCs go up and knock him out and then the others move up.

Okay, it's Tuesday and nobody volunteered to go with Leeka, and a very nice roll was given by the dice roller, too!

Super Secret GM rolls:

Spoiler:

Lookout Perception: Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9

Darkness enshrouds Leeka, and she seems to meld in so well that the other PC's cannot even see her.

She sneaks up and no one seems to notice her as she stands next to the rather large, intimidating Tiefling. He looks twice as big as he did before once she gets closer. It's as if the darkness made the Tiefling bigger.

Leeka will get a surprise round on Mr. Lookout. Once Leeka acts, the rest of the party will get a single, half action. After this, an initiative roll if combat continues further than the surprise round. If you wish to act, please do so before Thursday. If everyone's acted by tomorrow, I will post the results.

VP: 8/8, WP: 30/30, WP Threshold: 14 AC: 18 (touch 15, FF 13); CMD: 13 (+2 to AC and CMD vs goblinoids)| F/R/W: +3/+6/+2 (+2 vs fear)

Leeka comes right up behind the tiefling at the end of one of its patrol arcs. As he turns around, he has only a heartbeat to notice the tiny halfling before she pivots on one foot, bringing the other foot square in his junk with as much force as she can muster!!

Unarmed Strike: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18
Damage: 1d4 ⇒ 4 and Fort DC 13 or be stunned for 1 round

M Dwarf Barb8hp94/94AC20/T12/FF18,F12R5W6

Colgrim charges out as soon as Leeka kicks the tiefling and will attempt to clobber him with the flat of his axe.

Stanley hopes he's close enough to affect the fight in a meaningful way, ideally putting the lookout to sleep to make it easier for the others to make him unconscious.

If close enough (within 30'), he will use Slumber Hex [DC 15 Will save, 2 rds]

Dario rushes forward with a rope to tie up the tiefling should he succumb to either Stanley's Hex or Iolana's wrestling.

GM Stuff:

Spoiler:

Leeka flies out of the darkness, slamming her fist into the tiefling's naughty bits and leaving him gasping for air. As she does this, Colgrim comes out of hiding as well, charging in and missing the Tiefling after swinging low. Stanley, whose hex is not as effective as he'd like.

Barnabus notes something of great import as the others rush forward, there is a figure at the top of the bell tower, who has taken note of the party's presence as Iolana reaches the Tiefling, and obtains a very tight grapple on him. Dario comes forward with rope for the tiefling.

Since everyone's already gone except for Byron, I'll go ahead and roll initiative. Byron is welcome to act before tomorrow, and I'll adjucate at that point, which will be the tiefling's actions.

Spoiler:

Barnabus: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20

Byron hisses:

"There is another one atop the belltower!"

He hustles forward, urgently attempting to climb the tower before the Tiefling atop it can raise the alarm!

Byron, the bell tower is 40 feet high, and, while old, it will take some time to climb up the tower.

Tieflings will act again on Saturday evening... unfortunate events keep on moving along through life :/

Male Human Hex Channeler Hedge Witch 1 (AC/Mage Armor: 12/16 [T: 12 FF: 10/14] | HP: 6/6 | F+0, R+2, W+3 | Init: +2 |Perc: +1/+3 [Vesnik: +5])

With Byron's warning, Stanley is forced to use a spell intended for a larger group. He just can't reach with his soothing words of slumber, so he casts sleep at the person in the watchtower, in hopes of avoiding an alarm being raised.

Cast Sleep on the person above, DC 15 Will

Adding a day due to only 3 actions chosen... combat's notoriously slow in PbP, so I am trying to be faster about it with when I will post my actions...
