The Dire GM |
First level PFS-legal characters only!
"Dot" or say hi in this space when you're ready to begin playing!
The Dire GM |
Fresh off your induction into the Society and the completion of their basic training within the organization, you find yourselves outside the office of Ambrus Valsin, the venture-captain in charge of daily operations in and around the Grand Lodge. The chamberlain's secretary greets you curtly and motions for you to wait before Valsin is ready to see you. This gives you ample time to meet and introduce yourselves to the Pathfinder Agents with whom you will apparently be paired with today!
(OOC - Feel free to post in-character, roleplay, and introduce yourselves to each other!)
Zot Trouvaelir |
Zot nods courteously towards the secretary as he makes his way into the Lodge, walking just ahead of a dwarf he had already began exchanging pleasantries with. "Goo'day" Zot would greet, trying to get enough space ahead of Brumi Gruntek before turning around to face him once more.
"Well lets see, there's 'shroom, 'shroom, 'shroom, 'shroom, 'shrooms wit' 'shrooms o' course, 'shroom, 'shroom and some 'shroom, well you know mostly if it got some 'shrooms we Dwarves'll prolly like it. Oh and a side o' 'shroom ale ne'er hurts. Though to be fair, if ya' got some drink, I'll try pretty much any food ya' put in front o' me."
fights the urge to re-enact Monty Python's "Spam" skit with a healthy substitution of 'shrooms...
Taking a moment to ponder about what mushrooms were native in the far off lands, he recalled a number of recipes he'd picked up along his travels to the Grand Lodge. "I do recall Ironcap Mushrooms being particularly popular in some of the more populated capitals I'd frequent in my youth. Perhaps that would be more to your liking?" Zot would ask, lowering his face so as to look over his spectacles to skim through some of the earlier entries in his book. Ironcap Stew with some kind of seasoned meat seemed to be the ticket.
Zot would nod slowly before inquiring, "If so, perhaps after we are done speaking with Ambrus Valsin you could help me shop for some ingredients? I would be really grateful for it!" Zot's interest was obvious, though his youthful excitement and interest was subdued with a sensible and seasoned sense of wisdom so as not to be be too grating.
Bumi Gruntek |
I was kinda going for Bubba and shrimp, but Monty Python works
's long as they're 'shromms can't be nuthin' wrong wit' 'em. 'Shrooms, root veggies, bacon, goat, beer, pretty much all a dwarf needs to be happy, hearty, and hale, I say.
Bumi's happy to give you space, not really used to being around people all the time, or above ground for such long periods.
Bumi stands every inch of 4ft tall, and is loaded down with a pack that looks ready to travel at a moments notice and would probably weigh him down, if it weren't for the fact he's a Dwarf. He seems content to chat with people as they arrive or sit quietly and wait in the meantime. He's nice enough for a dwarf, though he doesn't seem to understand above-grounders grooming habits (his nails are full of dirt) or lowered voices as his voice seems to fill the room, and some of the rooms beyond.
Zot Trouvaelir |
A quick look at Zot's short and heavy set features would find his long wavy mystic turquoise hair, full cheeks, and a set of small spectacles pushed up to the bridge of his wide-set nose hard to ignore. Zot stood just over three feet, give or take a few inches, with an eager and curious disposition that seemed become more excited with each new mention of exotic food.
Closer examination would reveal the finer details of attire. Wearing a simple cassock seasoned from years of travel, Zot had a small collection of belt pouches and a single stole decorated with emblems of Desna hanging folded from the right side of his woven leather belt. On his opposite hip one would find a wide-brimmed hat hung from a strapped morning star that seemed rarely used and in prime condition.
Covering over his upper torso and part of his waste was a split-front surplice made of a weathered cotton which he wore like a loosely fitted vest. Inside the vest was a multitude of pockets, many of which were filled with mysterious pieces of spice-scented tree bark, mushrooms, and various leaves.
A leather strap across his torso helped to hold up a filled leather backpack that had a wide assortment of spoons, cups, and a cooking kit both inside and tied firmly along the backpack's sides. A rolled up set of white and dark blue blankets hung tightly along the underside of the backpack.
His cassock draped down to just above his ankles. A pair of heavily soiled leather boots covered his feet, hinting at the fact they have seen their fair share of travel. A symbol of a butterfly who's wings had been shaped into that of a 4 point star adorned the back of a pair of tanned finger-less gloves were easily visible as Zot sifted through his recipe journal.
"Very well then Bumi," Zot would acknowledge, "We will have to see where the Lodge takes us next. If'n you get tired of simple trail rations along the way simple say the word and good'ol Zot can see about brewing up a good fix'n or two." Zot would boast, the prospect of getting on the road again with a Dwarf seemed promising indeed, especially if he'd be willing to share a recipe or three.
"Hope'ya don't mind my excitement. This will be my first assignment since joining the Pathfinders, been mostly traveling as a caravan Healer, Fortune-Teller, and most importantly: Cook." Zot would wink knowingly. "A caravan doesn't last long without food to keep the body, mind, and soul alive during long journeys. Figured I'd apply myself to a good cause and make the most of it."
Zot would take a seat and casually motion for Bumi to pull up a chair, "Is this your first time as well Bumi? What brings you to the Lodge?"
Einn Emberstrands |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
Ember walks into the waiting room, turning slightly a bit as to clear the door with the hilt of a greatsword and leaving the door unharmed. She tucks an envelope back the belt pouch at her side, with the sketching of what looks like a map of the Grand Lodge scribbled on it in a careful hand.
She pushes the loose dark red strands behind her ears on both sides simultaneously. Looking over towards the secretary in a heavy northern accent but not stumbling over the Taldane name, "Office of the Ambrus Valsen." At a nod from the secretary, she takes a seat without stumbling over the furniture. She picks a wooden chair that allows her to sit only setting the bag at her feet, a stick with strings sticking out of the top of it.
She looks across the room and takes a second pass with her head noting the two smaller figures. "Greetings, finders of paths and travelers of great places. How does this day find such great travelers?"
Z3nCha0s |
{Despite what my name says I am an inquisitor of Desna, the title was during the working process of the character.} Dark locks adorn the head of a pale and stern looking man. Younger than one might expect for one who carries so many scars Nova stands slouched against the wall in a position almost conveying relaxation, but the shifting of his eyes and constant ticking of his lip banishes the idea of comfort. Nova is on edge but as he looks around he sees his fellows and a measure safety is allotted to him. "The day finds me well, and you?"
Zot Trouvaelir |
How exciting! Not only two new RP posts, and I find one of them to be a fellow follower of Desna!
Turning his attention towards those that just entered the building, Zot would look to size up each individuals appetite. He was always amazed at the Diversity that the Pathfinders brought into his life and pleased at what stories they had to share.
Smiling Zot would look back to Bumi, "Look't that there Bumi, seems like we were not the only ones summoned by sir Ambrus Valsin!"
So as not to come across as rude, shortly after Nova (Not sure if this is your character's true name?) returned his response to Einn, Zot would hop down from his chair so as to stand on both his feet. Taking a courteous and flourishing bow before standing back up to meet the gaze and greet each who entered, "Zot Trouvaelir, traveling healer and cook at your service. Th'day finds me as equally well and truly blessed to meet you all!"
With a sense of mild uncertainty, Zot would query to all in the hopes of learning of what he had to look forward to. "Are you all as new to the Society as I? I've only read of Pathfinder valor in the Chronicle with occasional mentions in various sermons on the road, be a part of it seems like a truly amazing opportunity!"
Bumi Gruntek |
Ahh, gud more Pathfinders, had me a bit worried, thought I got in trouble after that whole err'nd fur Mr. Dreng. Looks like it'll be a new task instead. Desnans this common 'round here or just luck o' the draw?
Bumi will introduce himself around and continue waiting for Ambrus.
Bumi's the name, Bumi Gruntek. Miner by trade, though I'm pretty good with earth in general.
The Dire GM |
Venture Captain Ambrus Valsin, Chamberlain of the Grand Lodge, throws open the doors to his office and motions for you to enter and find a seat opposite his desk. His motions are efficient and precise, and he wastes no time bringing you to order.
"All right, Pathfinders! Listen up. I know most of you are new recruits eager to make names for yourselves in the organization, but first we need to make sure you are up to snuff and won’t get yourself killed out there. I have a number of small assignments for you and your team, and it would be best if you could finish them before the day’s end.
“Every day we get some doe-eyed hopeful or some sniveling bootlicker willing to do anything to join up with the Pathfinders. Most of them are
good kids, but not all of them have the salt to make it in a world like this. It’s rough out there and I’m not just talking about the ruins, tombs, and wilderness Pathfinders find themselves in on missions. We’ve got people who look down their noses at us, folks who think we squander our resources, and agents who want to take everything we have collected. This wealth of knowledge and these items of lore make us the most powerful organization on the planet. That said, since we are fractured and widespread, it’s difficult for that power to light on anything for too long. For every friend of the Society, there are two enemies.
"Your first mission, to test your mettle and loyalties, sends you to meet a few people important to the Society living here in Absalom. These are other venture-captains or close allies of our organization, so follow their orders as you would mine. I’ve prepared a list of things I want you to do. They’re not arranged in any particular order of importance, but I want them all completed as quickly as possible. Only report to me once you complete them all. Included in the envelope you hold in your hands is the list, complete with the name of your contact, and directions to the meeting location.”
Valsin then puts your Mission Assignments on the desk, as well as a Map of Absalom for you to utilize.
"If you have questions, or introductions to make - make them fast. I want these tasks done before nightfall."
Bumi Gruntek |
I've made introductions above
Seems to me, we might 's well, do em in order. Seems to be the short path 'round town anyway. Any these people easier to deal wit' then others Cap'n?
The Dire GM |
"They are all staunch allies of the Society, and each one has an active role in the various...factions that also influence our Pathfinders' careers." Valsin replies.
Zot Trouvaelir |
"Zot reporting," trying to be quick while still assertive of the assignment, Zot took note of Ambrus's dismissive nature. He was obviously someone who wasn't going to put up with failure. It seems Zot's inquiry about what to expect would have to wait, as it was becoming very clear that he'd be finding out his answer first hand.
Listening in on what Bumi had to say Zot would glance over the paperwork. One particular assignment struck a personal cord, forcing the gnome to have to collect himself before speaking. "Although I agree whole-heartedly with Bumi, I would request that we make Ollysta's request among our first priorities. From the sound of it, some orphan's may be under the watch of a questionable character and would consider Ollysta's request of some urgency above the others. By Desna's light I hope the children she hopes to have us deliver the medicine to are alright."
Bumi Gruntek |
Ya'll top-siders really do seem to like yur light, no problem for me doing the orphan stuff early, mere-lee a suggestion for efficiency, no reason to walk loops when lines'll do and all that.
Einn Emberstrands |
"It does seem that the Ascended Court, would lead naturally on to the Wise Quarter then Ivy District, only needing to swing by the Docks after those issues are handled with." Einn mentions looking over the top of the smaller compatriots to the table. "As Zot mentioned time may be of the essence in that particular task, at least with the information provided at this point in time."
"Pardon for the lack of name I did not wish to interrupt our esteemed Captain. Einn Emberstrands, traveling mistral, teller of tails, and general things that people do when snowed in places to the far north."
Looking down at the list that is on the table. "Maps, charters and books seem quite normal. What is the size and nature of the item that was borrowed from the vaults? Any special care that we need to be aware of traveling with it? Something that can be conveyed normally or may we need to hire a wagon for it?" She will look up to Valsin with the questions.
The Dire GM |
As Einn asks her questions, another team of fresh-faced Pathfinders starts assembling outside the office. Valsin sighs.
"I'm sure you'll be able to handle it. Now, if you still need to get to know each other, I suggest you do it on the road. I have approximately 13 more mission briefings to give before lunch."
Zot Trouvaelir |
After Ambrus made his point about being busy Zot would turn to the others and motion to take their leave, eagerly moving to open the door for the others. "Thank you for your time Ambrus, we will get right to work."
Zot would wait to see what the others had to say before taking further action. He would roll some ideas through his head of what his assignments would entail. Before nightfall, Ambrus would have specified. Seems we'd have to get straight to work.
After the door would close Zot would turn to the others. "Seems Ambrus either doesn't care of the specifics or doesn't have the time. Likely both. We'll have to do this blindly. To the Ascended Court then?"
Just to clarify, what District are we in currently?
Einn Emberstrands |
"Or this be part of the test, can we figure it out and make it work." Einn mentions pulling the pack she left in the other room back on a shoulder.
"The Advantage is Ascended Court is the most time sensitive also the closest from where this says we need to go, as our location in the Docks is not clearly defined. By the sounds of this informant, perhaps for reasons and may need searching things out a bit when we get there."
She would reach up and hold the door open for her compatriots on this adventure. "Let's not keep Ollysta waiting."
Zot Trouvaelir |
Hope everyone has a great time at GenCon!
With a mix of excitement to be on his way on his first official business and a bit of concern given his current task, Zot would work with a level of eager urgency to help the party get on their way. Hearing what the others would have to say Zot would nod affirmatively, "A test indeed, and one I wager we will be well equipped to handle. I'm not much for story myself though I can work my way around a tavern or two if it becomes necessary."
With a hint of a playful smirk rising along the corner of Zot's face he would add, "Something I hope to press my advantage on with regards to our Osirian nobleman. The larger one's purse the larger their appetite."
Bumi Gruntek |
Let's get goin' 'lreddy. 'Nuff jaw-jackin' time to go 'fore that big fireball in tha sky goes down.
Bumi Gruntek |
So it looks like we've hit a bit o' the hard stuff, and are being delayed unexpectedly. Hoping to get in some fresh miners to help blow this rock apart lickety-split
Our two Inquisitors had to step aside due to some RL issues, and we're trying to find a couple of people to grab those spots, sorry for the delay.
Zot Trouvaelir |
And here I was hoping for some good Desna brother/sisterhood RP! LoL No worries though, RL has its way of working their way into things and it is to be expected. I completely understand! I'll be eagerly awaiting either way.
"Well with any bustling city like Absolom there are bound to be distractions and delays, lets make the most of it. Maybe we can see about checking a market along the way to see if we can't find some snacks along the way?" Zot would rub his belly eagerly.
The Dire GM |
A messenger comes running out from Valsin's office.
"Wait! You two have been reassigned to a different mission," he says to the Inquisitors, and motions to three people following him. "These three are coming with you instead."
GM: Go ahead and introduce your characters, Bret, Aaron, and Steve.

Stepping forth, a medium height man bows with a flourish and announces "I am Kegan, and I am here to lend my skills with rapier in your quest." His smile is wide and friendly, his eyes alight with life.
He is a slender man with a wiry build. He is wearing a leather jerkin as protection and carries a light mace and a dagger at his belt along with the afore-mentioned rapier.
"So sorry for being tardy! You can fill me in later on what I missed. Are we ready to go?!?"
Zot Trouvaelir |
Welcome back and welcome aboard to those new to the cause! Lets get this show on the road!
"We were already trying to make haste to our first assignment, Venture Captain Ambrus Valsin wasn't as much urgent as he was impatient" Zot's smirk turning to a courteous and friendly smile. "Welcome to the caravan regardless, I am pleased to have another sword to our cause."
Zot would turn his attention to Kegan and then to the others approaching. "My name is Zot, traveling healer and cook at your service!"
Steve Irwin |

A bright blue eyed blonde seemingly human man steps forward and in an Australian accent introduces him self, "Heya mates how ya doin'? Names Steve, I'm a Werecrocadile and Ill be your hunter for the adventure. This here," he motions to his animal companion by his feet, " is my crocadile, Dundee. We are happy to help!"
Kegan the Chaotic |
Crocadile? I can never remember which sort of creatures are regular animals or some sort of magical creatures! Always best to assume they understand just in case!
"Zot, Steve, Dundee" Kegan tips the brim of his hat as he says each name. "I look forward to working with you!"
He looks expectantly towards the others, waiting for them to introduce themselves.

Happy to have you all along, but as they say this rock ain't gonna move itself so let's get a move on, huh.

Arriving at the Temple of the Shining Star in the Ascendant Court, you are immediately directed to Ollysta Zadrian. This paladin of Sarenrae is young in her years, but holds herself with the poise of a queen and warrior simultaneously. She smiles as you approach.
"Thank the light of Sarenrae you have arrived! I knew Ambrus would come through for us in the Silver Crusade. I desperately need you to bring medicine to an orphanage and let me know if the headmistress, Gilga Baltwin, is deserving of our charity. Since our quest began, the needy have clamored for our aid, and I suspect some are abusing our generosity. It may sound cruel, but there are plenty of dishonest people out in the world eager for easy gold."
“Do you know of the Silver Crusade? After discovering so many factions splintered the Society, a number of us banded together to proliferate the cause of charity and kindness using the Society’s resources. As it is said, ‘The Dawn brings new light’ and I’ve made it my life’s work to use our recent darkness to bring a new light to the world and to the Pathfinder Society. I apologize for straying off point. Will you bring this parcel of medicine to Auntie Baltwin’s Home for Recovery in the Eastgate district?”
Assuming you agree, she continues.
"Normally I'd love to answer your questions before sending you off, but I also need to arrange for a vital caravan of medical supplies to be sent to Mendev, so I'm afraid I'll have to leave you to learn what you can from her neighbors."
The Dire GM |
Once you take the supplies and head to the Eastgate district, you can all make Diplomacy (Gather Information) or Knowledge (Local) checks.
~~~~~
Feel free to RP with Ollysta, roll knowledge/diplomace, and RP with what you have learned. When you are ready to move on to Auntie Baltwin’s Home for Recovery, post a *, and we will continue.
Sure 'nuff, sweet thang. Always happy to help such a fine lady as yerself. - With a s%~!-eating grin on his face.
Kegan the Chaotic |
With a sweep of his hat and a graceful bow, Kegan assures her "What my gruff companion means is that it would be a pleasure, my lady! We shall hasten to deliver your package and confirm that the recipient uses it wisely!"
He then steps forward to receive the package of medicine.
"It would seem that the person we seek -- Miltivus -- has a strong liking of alcohol. She is rumored to send the children off into town unsupervised, though I know not for what purpose.
The only other thing I found out worthy of mention is that many find the woman rather gruff, some might even venture to call her rude. I do hope she has a tutor come in to teach the children's etiquette lessons!"
Zot Trouvaelir |
With a humbled yet purposeful bow, Zot would look back up to Ollysta, his face a mixed expression of admiration and nervousness. "Lady Zadrian, it is a true honor to meet you in person. I have indeed heard of the Silver Crusade and it was few of the very agents of the Silver Crusade who inspired me to join the Society. It would be a true honor to serve in this cause, and hopefully provide due justice and service for the youth you are trying to support."
Turning to the others briefly and then back to Ollysta, "It seems all within the society are truly busy indeed, though if you or any of the other agents would have the time, I would love to learn more of how I could better serve the Silver Crusade and the Pathfinder Society as a whole."
Listening to Kegan, Zot would pull what rumors he could recall from his last visit to one of the Taverns
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21
Zot Trouvaelir |
Listening to what Kegan had to share, Zot would take the time to recall his own efforts confirming his findings. Adding further, Zot would use his skill of food and drink to get additional knowledge from Master Trebb Bonto. "It seems that Miltivus also has a friendly reputation with those of finer taste. It wouldn't surprise me that those who pass messages along with some coin to her eager ear have more to do with her personal desires than that of those in her care."
Assuming Ollysta would have nothing further to add to his inquiry, Zot would nod towards the direction of the Orphanage, acknowledging his desire to get moving. "Those kids won't be able to help themselves. Unless anybody else has more to add, I suggest we get a move on."
"*" unless Ollysta has more to add
Kegan the Chaotic |
As Zot finishes his suggestion, Kegan is moving.
His long strides carry him quickly, but his path is not a straight line. Multiple times along the way he stops to flirt for a few moments with a lady. The diversions do not last long, but there are a few instances where he has to trot in order to catch up with the rest of the group.
Somebody said move, my character is doing so! Feel free to talk more, assume Kegan found someone to flirt with while you were doing useful stuff!
The Dire GM |
Ollysta just smiles at Kegan and Bumi's words before moving off to work on her Mendevian concerns.
You travel to the Eastgate district and speak with Auntie Baltwin's neighbors, Miltivus, the Anthos family, and Trebb Bonto. Following this, you arrive:
Nearly swarming with cats and children, this fine upper-class home appears to be clean and in good condition considering the number and ages of its inhabitants. Three young boys shoot marbles in the dirt near the side porch, and inside strewn toys and more cats lie about on the floors. A few children take care of chores, while coughs and sneezes softly erupt from the children’s dormitories upstairs.
Kegan the Chaotic |
Looking around and not seeing their guardian, Kegan goes over to talk to one of the boys playing marbles.
"Hello! My names is Kegan. How are you doing?"
While he is chatting them up, he looks them over to see if there are any signs of problems.
Bumi Gruntek |
I'll take a look around
Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18
Then ask one of the kids out front, Is Auntie Baldwin in, we've got a delivery for her
Lotsa cats here, is that why so many coughs and sneezes, ya' think?
Zot Trouvaelir |
A bit disappointing in a lack of response from Lady Zadrian, Zot would take it as a hint that she was indeed busy and set his personal focus on the task at hand. Perhaps if all else went well he'd try to reach her some other time.
Taking a note of Kegan's eager advance, Zot would smile to himself comfortable in knowing he wasn't the only one who could navigate the finer points of diplomacy and gathering needed information. He would then turn his attention to Bumi and assist in any efforts to look about the building in question and provide support where possible.
Zot would attempt to "Take 10" while the situation was lax with the "Aid Another" action on Bumi's Perception roll in the hopes of revealing more information. Taking 10 with Perception +3 = 13
If Zot would find he was of little help he would turn his attention to the upper levels of the complex where the sound of ill health was clearly heard. "What could Auntie Baltwin be up to and what exactly was ailing these children?" Zot would ponder to himself.
Reflecting on Bumi's words Zot would reply aloud, "Well, that is a lot of kids who'd be sick over cats. Some snivels sure, but I am not sure of what to think of what I am hearing. If the cats are not cleaned after their mess could easily cause a problem." Zot would try to take note of the scent as he moved around.
To clarify, Ollysta "just smiles" at the two hitting on her was to suggest that she just barely even noticed them since they were being "slightly uncouth".
She will give Zot a rather large smile, and offer to speak with him at great length once both of their busy days working on Pathfinder affairs have concluded.
The Dire GM |
In response to Kegan in a very respectful almost demure tone, they answer in unison, "Just fine sir."
(They look to be in relatively good health, but for 12 year olds, they appear to have a bit more muscle on them than you might expect - as if they've been doing physical activity on a daily basis for the last few years)
To Bumi in a similar tone, one answers: "Yes sir, she's in the kitchen right now, sir. ...But, you should know she doesn't like Dwarves, sir," one of them manages to stammer out. Another continues, "Oh, no, the cats are fun...kids just get sick being around so many people in the market or at the docks, but Auntie Baltwin gives us medicine and makes us feel better after about a week, two tops!"
One of the others whispers, "She doesn't like orcs or elves either, and thinks gnomes and 'little folk' are just kids like us who are allowed to be out on their own before they're really old enough."
Zot and Steve notice that most of the cats are wary of the newly arrived Pathfinders/adults, and most retreat further away. One black cat with emerald green eyes, however, is standing in front of a pet-door in the front door and is staring right back at Zot and the other Pathfinders present. Steve gets the impression that this cat may be more than it appears at first glance.
Bumi Gruntek |
Thank ya' young fella, 'prreciate it, but whether she likes me or not, I gotta get this delivery to her ya' know.
Bumi will take note of her not really liking anyone and the well muscled kids (though being a miner most his life doesn't find that part all that odd) and assuming Steve points out the cat will give take a look at it as well.
Perc: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20
Otherwise, he's ready to get on with the delivery.
