"The Devil We Know, Part 1" (Inactive)

Game Master JCServant

Running this PFS module for official credit. If this goes well, we will continue with other parts of this line.

Salutations.

I'm looking to start a play by post Pathfinder Society Scenario, "The Devil We Know Part 1" If this goes well, I may continue it into the other parts. This is for a level 1-2 group. This is an official PFS adventure.

I have plenty of experience running homebrew and AP's ..however, this will be my first PFS *and* my first play by post... so, please, only apply if you have patience as I'm learning this as I go along (as many people are). I am open to suggestions by players/GMs who have done offical PFS scenarios via Pbp in the past.

I recommend http://paizo.com/forums/dmtz5dpx?DHs-Guide-to-Play-By-Post-gaming for newer Pbp gamers.

Perspective players need to be able to post in the early morning, mid day and early evening on a regular basis during the weekdays. Weekends are expected to be slower, but some participation then will also be required. Do not apply if you cannot regular meet these requirements. I also imagine that players must be able to scan PDF sheets so I can review characters sheets, sign off on scenarios, etc. (If there's a better way to handle that, feel free to let me know)

Perspective players feel free to post below. If there are more than four or five players, I will choose based on history, and party need.

Recruitment will be open through Friday 12 MST. I will announce the party shortly after that. I will also add more details to the thread as needed.

question: using a PFS module, does that also mean we have to use the PFS rules and such?

Grand Lodge

It does. All characters must be created using the PFS guidelines in order to play. The guide is available for free. Check it out! It's a lot of fun! http://paizo.com/pathfinderSociety

Another question...do you anticipate starting before or after 8/16? I'd just like to know if I should create a character with v4.2 of the rules in mind.

Grand Lodge

Dotting for interest. I have several level 1's. This fighter net & trident specialist. A Barbarian version of the same weapon focus and a Tiefling Witch that I have yet to spec for PFS but is essentially ready to go.

Grand Lodge

Good question. After. Please use the newer rules

Still might need to make a few tweaks on the character sheet...but I won't stray too much from the basic concept.

background:

Wendall and Marjorie Gardner had prayed for a healthy child since their wedding day, so when Rhydderch was born on their 10th anniversary they believed him to be a gift from the gods; and little did they know how much truth lay behind that sentiment. Rhydderch always seemed to take to things a little bit more quickly than other children and Wendell worked long hours on the farm to help pay for the finest tutors and instructors.

On his 12th birthday Wendall and Marjorie were petrified to wake up in the morning and find that Rhydderch had gone completely bald overnight; only to grow a thick head of long, golden hair before noon. Over the course of the next few days Rhydderch underwent other changes as well; his skin darkened to a rich bronze and his eyes deepened to a radiant blue. But most remarkable was his "healing touch", and ability discovered when a distraught Rhydderch was tending to a neighbors dog who limped out of the woods dragging a broken leg behind it. Rhydderch placed a hand on the dog's head and another on its broken leg and closed his eyes; within seconds the dog was running through the fields as if the injury had never happened.

Realizing that Rhydderch was much to special to inherit the family farm, he was sent away to study with the Clerics of Desna. While he certainly missed his parents, Rhydderch came to realize that he was destined for much greater things. In his 21st year he was recruited into the Silver Crusade by the Ollysta Zadrian herself and was sent to the Grand Lodge to train to become a Pathfinder. Now, on the eve of his first mission, he feels the power of Desna flowing through him as he takes yet another step closer toward his destiny.

I have a Half Elf Barbarian lying around, let me put him in an alias

are goblins allowed?

No.

Get the two free guides and that lists the rules and additional resources.

Additional Resources (Link near top)

I'd like to be in the running as an applicant. I will build a character to suit whatever's needed as the party fills. New to PFS, but not to PBP.

Thanks, dave. Yeah, everyone check out the resources available before asking questions. Don't worry.... you still have plenty of time to cast your ticket into the hat, so to speak. I won't look over characters/player profiles until Friday afternoon at the earliest. Thanks!

Liberty's Edge

I'm very interested! I'd like to play this character - she's a 1st level druid from the Mwangi Expanse. I've played her already in two of the three First Steps sessions.

Just to let you know, I'll be away for a couple of days here and there in August visiting relatives. It shouldn't be too disruptive, and I'm a regular poster otherwise. Hopefully this seems reasonable.

Liberty's Edge

(By the way, she was a cleric in those first two sessions but I'm retooling her as a druid given the new 1st level character retraining option. The rebuild is mostly but not completely done.)

Grand Lodge

Great, got some great character ideas here. Keep them coming. The official start date for this will be the same as the new PFS rules taking effect... Aug 16, 2012. Again, make sure you're using those rules in making your character.

Ryu asked earlier, "Are Goblins allowed." In the Race section of the PFS guide, it says, "Select your character’s class and race from the choices offered in the Core Rulebook. You may also select aasimar, tengu, or tiefling as your character’s race with access to the proper Additional Resources book. Additional class and race options from resources like the Pathfinder RPG Advanced Player’s Guide, Pathfinder RPG Ultimate Magic, Pathfinder RPG Ultimate Combat, Pathfinder RPG Advanced Race Guide, and Pathfinder Campaign Setting: The Inner Sea World Guide are generally available with few or no alterations, as well."

Goblins are listed as a potential race in the ARG in the 'featured race' section. In scanning through the PFS guide last night, I could not find a list of excluded races. Papa, you stated that Goblins are not allowed per the rules. Would you be able to assist me by pointing out what page I can find where goblins are exluded as a playable option? Again, I scanned through the book, so it is possible I totally missed it. I'm now reading through it slowly, but it does take some time.

Liberty's Edge

I think that wording is confusing, but it's meant to convey that the only races allowable are from the CRB plus tengus, aasimars, and tieflings. What's available from ARG beyond that are race options not additional races themselves, if that makes sense.

The "additional resources" page lists what is legal and what isn't from various sources. It hasn't been updated in a few weeks, but it still says:

"In Chapter 2, nothing from the catfolk, drow, fetchlings, goblins, hobgoblins, kobolds, orcs, and ratfolk entries are currently legal for play. "

Too bad, because goblins are a hoot to play! But my impression is they are still not PFS legal.

Yea, that is what I was referring to and I also read it as only the three new races. Thanks...

Grand Lodge

Well, given the quote from the Guide, and the notes from the "Additional Resources," it would appear that players can choose from not only the three listed races (which were detailed in seperate resource books before ARG), but any ARG races aside from those listed are OK (which would include Aasimars, Dhampirs, Fetchling, Ifrits, Oreads, Sylphs, Tengus, Tieflings, Undinesm Kitsune, Nagaji and Wayangs...all look like they are OK for play unless I'm missing something)

if you are playing for PFS credit, only the races listed in the Core book and aasimar, tengus and tieflings are allowed. To play the other ARG races--ie fetchling and such, the player would need a boon won at a Convention.

Grand Lodge

Hey, throwing my hat in the ring - he just finished the PFS starters with Marisan, need to update him as Level 2. Will be doing 2 or 3 scenarios next weekend with him at Gen Con as well, may be level 3 by then or I could make another similar rogue for your campaign, would be very much like Elwyn.

Grand Lodge

Ah, I see the clarification on another webpage here. Yeah, so about 10 races altogether. Cool. Learn something new everyday (And a lot more as I read through this stuff. Exciting!)

Sounds great, Elwyn.

Silver Crusade

I'd like to make a go of it. I have a human healer.

Liberty's Edge

This character was also in the first steps series with Elwyn and Marisan -- I am working on finishing his transition to level 2 (for even higher levels of ass-whooping and shenanigans).

I withdraw my interest, not clear about PFS rules to begin with, and with the newest modifications even less so. Have fun!

Grand Lodge

Marsian - Druid
Elwyn - Rogue
Kyle - Cleric
Harboth - Ranger

You four are all in.

Deane and Aroach, you guys are in if you can get your character profiles updated with stats by Monday.

For those characters who already have had previous experiences in PFS, I require that you scan and email your character sheet and previous chronical sheets for a quick review. For brand new characters, your online information will suffice. I will check over that information this week.

Our goal is to start this next Friday, the official start of PFS 4.2. A discussion thread is now up at http://paizo.com/campaigns/v5748p75hohk9/discussion#1 for any OOC chat, rule questions, etc. I encourage those players who have been accepted to give a brief introduction about yourself, as well as your character (Their physical appearance, first impression someone would get after 10 minutes of conversation, etc)

Here is Rhydderch's profile. I need to make a few more adjustments I think...but I'll definitely be done before Monday.

Grand Lodge

Awesome - thanks very much - I''l update the character shortly. One thing - I will be playing a couple of PFS games at Gen Con - probably with this character - likely Fri and Sun - do you have any problem with that?

Grand Lodge

I'm a PFS newb myself, so I'm still a little fuzzy on the organized play rules. I know you can't play more than one character in a scenario, but I don't remember if there was a rule about any one character being prohibitied from participating in more than one scenario at a time.

If it is not against PFS Organzied Play rules, I do not have an issue with it myself. Chances are we're not going to get too far between Friday and Monday :) You can update your character sheet, and scan/send me that with the supporting, signed scenario sheets, I'll look it over, and you'll be good to go with whatever you earned through those things you played at GenCon.

Liberty's Edge

Excellent - thanks! I also will be finishing my transition to level 2 shortly.

Grand Lodge

Aroach here, Decided to play my lvl 2 Sorceress who went with Harboth Marisian and Elwyn in the past

Grand Lodge

Reformatted Alias, with Pic this time

The official rules state that you can not play more than one character during a particular scenario...but AFAIK there isn't anything written regarding multiple PbP games; nor with playing in a "real time" game while the same character is involved in a PbP.

The only way I can see it getting messy is if your character dies, levels, or does some significant shopping while still involved in another game. While I certainly don't recommend dying...in some PbP games I've played the GM has asked players to play their characters as they were when they signed up while others allowed the changes.

...so I guess this was just a long winded way to say that, in the absence of an official rule, it's up to the GM's discretion!

Hmmm...looking at the party make up I think I may drop out so that you can recruit a front-line fighter. I could probably retool Rhydderch to be a paladin but I was hoping to try my chops as a divine caster.

Thanks for the offer...and best of luck!

Liberty's Edge

Great - thanks! I look forward to gaming again with you, Harboth, Elwyn, and Rachel.

I can e-mail you the chronicle sheets, just PM me your e-mail address. The sheets we received were a bit dark and fuzzy so I might e-mail the original with our GM's signature, and also a clean copy that might be easier to read.

Liberty's Edge

Hah! Rachel with a picture!

Look forward to playing with you all (again for most of the group). I, too, would be happy to forward on chronicle sheets to our GM if you will PM me with an email address.

Grand Lodge

Likewise - I'll send mine.

Grand Lodge

email to jcservant at cyberlightcomics dot com. I'm stoked! Let's do this! In a week. LOL. Well, we will get there. Good things come to them that wait.

Deane, I'm not super sure if a 1st level fighter tank is just going to show up. I'd rather run with six players who aren't super balanced than run with five who suffer the same issue. PFS scenarios allow some leaway knowing that not all parties and builds are not going to be super optimized. Whadya say, bud?

Grand Lodge

Also, when y'all get a chance, mosey on over to the Discussion forum and introduce yerselves and your character (check out my OP there).
