Kingmaker Table 1

Mustering
The gameplay, as you might have guessed, is very player-driven. So everyone should role play where they are in the city, and why they're there. An NPC will involve you in the campaign from there.
The City of Krisol
Aside from what's shown on the crude map you've made from your experience (brief or otherwise), you already know this much about Krisol:

The city is divided into sections based on proximity to the port and social class into the following sections: the docks, the lower city, the upper city, and the shanties (northern, center, and eastern).

Docks: shops are inexpensive, but shady; the population consists of fishermen, "merchant sailors," and street performers, not to mention the guards manning the march line, which separates the docks from the lower city.
Lower city: shops are a tad more expensive (depending) and more selective, but with a more varied selection; the population consists of merchants, do-it-alls, and "private security agents"
Upper city: Shops are pricey and have low diversity, but large stock; it's populated by the Nobility, officials, officers of the Guard, and "Major Businessmen"
Shanties: There could literally be anything going on in the shanties. Since they're self-policed, untaxed, and entirely made up of people who couldn't afford to live in town, it's a ripe breeding ground for criminals, but also for very inexpensive shop-tents that may have just about anything. So have fun, but watch your purse...

Thorn & Gwyn:
You are probably from the Shanties, Thorn is probably from the northern shanty, where there is a secret hole in the city wall leading to the northern part of the upper city. This gives the Upright Man (who lives the high-life here) a direct line to his lower-level enforcers.
Gwyn probably lives in the center shanty, being as it's probably the only one that could foster religion, and the southern shanty is where her former gang used to live.

Kingmaker Table 1

Previously on The Destiny of the Queen
Everyone has a physical or mental map (linked beneath my name) of the city, and is doing something somewhere for some reason.

0630

Odd'n woke up in his lean-to and headed out to seek out old, poor people who might be able to direct him to the slave-fighters and the patrons of the pit.

***

Odd'n tries in vain to make his way to the shanties, having gone north when he should've gone south. Instead he finds himself by the docks.

0730

He finds no one he considers to be both elderly and poor there, and nearly everyone he inspects cower, wince, or flee at his appearance. Eventually someone complains to a guard that a monstrosity is harassing the citizens, and the guard approaches Odd'n.

Everyone can roll for the following perceptions, as you will all probably see at least one guard early on. For future reference, if I don't explicitly mention a character's name in the spoiler, it's for everyone

Perception DC 10:

You notice a faded black & red Seal of Cheliax on the guards' shoulder plate

Perception DC 15:

You notice that the guards aren't all Chelish; in fact, some aren't even human

"Excuse me, sir," the battle-scarred guard is un-phased by Odd'n's appearance, and so looks straight up into his eyes, addresses him directly, "I'll need for you to stop harassing the citizens, your appearance is frightening them, and frankly I can't say I blame them. I'm going to have to ask you to--"

"Corporal Maud!" the guard cuts off when she hears her name in a strange voice. She and Odd'n both turn to see a greenish-brown nagaji in scholar's robes walking hastily in their direction. When he approaches, he continues, "This man has business with the Mayor, please excuse us." The nagaji beckons to Odd'n to follow him back away from the docks.

Gwyndolin didn't remember getting up. That was normal. She didn't remember walking down the stairs. This was also normal. She did remember that sickening sensation as her foot got caught in the too-long leg of her pants. Unfortunately, this was nothing new. Knocking the head priest of the chapel over after getting tripped up was, however, not normal.

"Sorry! Sorry, it was an accident!" she says as she helps the man to his feet and dusts him off.

Bronan snoozes through the dawn. After weeks on the road and another aboard a leaky ship, the comfort of the simple straw-filled mattress is too good to let waste. An hour later, he stretches his arms and heaves himself upright. Walking over to the foot of the bed, he tousles the shaggy mop head curled up there. "Ok buddy, lets go find some breakfast. Then see what this job is all about."

The ball of fur uncurls into a vaguely canine shape and scurries after Bronan as he exits his room in the Grounded Gam. He heads to the common room and speaks to the innkeep. "Good morning sir! I must thank you again for accepting a new lodger so late last night. What fare is on the menu today?" Bronan hopes for something other than fish and stale biscuits.

Moral, the loving, easy-going priest that he is, simply pats Gwyn on her shoulder, saying, "Not to worry, the Temple of Shelyn has had many a child before you, and will have many more after." And in the same breath adds, "But I'll have my symbol back now, if you please." He holds his hand out indicating the gold bird up her sleeve.

Gwyn blushes, produces the symbol, and says timidly, "Terribly sorry..."

"Old habits...I know," the Priest finishes for her, chuckling.

As they're both about to go their separate ways, there's a knock on the door...

Bronan--0730

"Paying customers are always welcome at the Grounded Gam! Day or Night! Don't forget to mention that to your friends." The loud (then soft) innkeep of the Grounded Gam, Gasparde Gustave, answers Bronan cheerfully. His expression then changes as he says, "Breakfast? We've got bread, and jerky. We're not much for meals here, not since my cook went to work across the street at The Flood Bucket. I don't mind though, she brings home the money she makes there!" He chuckles heartily thinking his "joke" was hilarious. "Anyway, that's 7 silver, 5 copper for the night."

Looking back towards Corporal Maud, Odd'n offers a sheepish smile before casting his eyes downwards and scurrying after the nagaji. "Uhm, thank.. thank you. Thank you. I'm sorry for scaring people.. Uhm.. you said the mayor wanted to see me.. is this.. uhm.. about anything.. that may have happened recently? I just got free.. I mean here.. but.. uhm.."

Odd'n stumbles over his last few words before looking to the nagaji, hoping for an answer and hoping this 'business' isn't about a body with its throat ripped out...

Gwyn looks at the door, wondering if she was just hearing things. A second knock confirms that there really is someone there.

She was a sight, her hair a tangled mess, her clothes askew, and her right shoulder bared by the too big shirt, but she was the only one around.

She opens the door, just enough to see out, and for whoever's there to to see her face, but nothing else.

"He-hello?"

Kingmaker Table 1

Thanks to Bronan's SO, we've got an awesome new map of Krisol! Check it out!

Odd'n--0645

Once they've gotten out of ear-shot, the slave-born stops, turning toward Odd'n...

"Forgive me, my name is Umaveti, and there's no need to babble, Mayor Minoj knows all about your...erm...circumstances, and since slavery has been outlawed in Krisol, you need not worry. You've simply saved our judicial system a great deal of time and money. No, rather, the mayor was impressed by rumors of your skill in combat, and would like to make official use of your services...if you're interested."

***

Gwyn--0835
Gwyn opens the door to see Umaveti the Librarian whom she knows from having been slapped on the hand more than once for "accidentally" walking out of the library with an unpaid-for volume. It is likely for this reason that she quickly shuts the door on his snout. He must be in a very real hurry, because he simply exhales forcefully and slips an envelope sealed with the Mayor's seal under the door. Gwyn can then hear him scuttle off.

Letter to Gwyn:

Dear Miss Maulsen,
I find I am in dire straights, and have needs of your services. I'm requesting that you join me in my office at City Hall at your earliest convenience. I guarantee a sizeable reward for your services, and a job well done could earn you steady employment by the city.

Salutations,
Mayor Minoj

Between bites of bread, Bronan lets out a half hearted laugh to be polite. Somehow, most of the jerky ends up on the floor beneath the table to be devoured by the beast lurking down there. "Any sights worth seeing hereabouts?" he asks.

After the meal, Bronan pays the man and sets out for a meandering stroll to window shop and stop by any of Gasparde's suggested spots. He takes no hurry, figuring that if the mayor waited for his letter to get to Bronan and Bronan's ship to cross the sea, another couple hours will make no difference.

"Oops." Gwyn mutters as she realizes what she just did.

Old habits were hard to break, and she was trying, she really was.

The letter, though, drives those thoughts from her mind as her curiosity is peaked.

My services? What kind of services does he need? I doubt he's looking for a thief trying to reform herself.

Gwyn pushes the thought aside as she continues on to the kitchen. A pear and a hunk of bread were all she needed for breakfast. After eating and helping the kitchen staff clean up, and putting a spoon back where she had found it, she heads back upstairs and gets ready. Ten minutes later, she comes back down the stairs and finds Father Moral.

"I'll be back in a bit. Tell the others I said hello!" she says before heading out.

Odd'n--0700
"Follow?" the librarian says in surprise, "As if I've the time to both the Mayor's messenger and chauffer." Umaveti takes a moment and a breath, before he continues, "Forgive me, it just gets on my nerves the way Minoj treats me...anyway, I can't take you to City Hall, I'm far too busy, but I can tell you how to get there..." Umaveti then proceeds to give Odd'n detailed, yet easy-to-follow directions to city hall. After he's certain Odd'n understands them, he leaves.

Bronan--0800
"Sights?" the smiling man chuckles from his post behind the bar, "Now there's a question for me bonny lass, if I ever heard one. To me all the top-world looks the same..."

At this the bell chimes, Gasparde looks excitedly at the door, then his face goes flat when he sees who it is. Umaveti, the nagaji librarian, walks in and approaches Bronan. "You must be Master Krass, my name is Umaveti, I'm pleased to finally meet you. You'll please forgive me, I would've suggested more...suitable arrangements had I known you were going to need a bed for the night..." Gasparde scoffs in the background. "It's not that Master Gustave is not a good host, it's just, well, being a merman can make some of the more intricate jobs of an innkeeper a tad more challenging."

"Anyhow, the Mayor will see you in his office at your earliest convenience, there isn't a great rush, but I'm sure you'll want to be there sooner rather than later...punctuality is a valuable quality in Mayor Minoj's eyes." Not wanting to be a burden, Umaveti bows to Bronan, then turns and does the same to Gasparde, and leaves. Gasparde offers a less-than-polite gesture as Umaveti walks out his door.

Gwyn--0930
Father Moral smiles, and says, "Of course I will, and may Shelyn's love inspire you!" He nearly shouts this last bit, as Gwyn is already half-way out the door.

Baru--0815
"Why should I tell you, Demon-spawn?" the Tien guard spits more than speaks, clearly disgusted by Baru's skin and arms.

Two, I take my job seriously and can actually get it done. As he finally approaches the guard, Baru takes a step forward into the man's personal space. And three, because unlike you, I at least have tried to be civil. Now, I'll ask again. Would you tell me of anyone needing a sell-sword?

Well, may as well see what this mayor wants with me.. Odd'n thinks to himself, shrugging his shoulders as he watches Umaveti rush off into the crowds. "Now.. City Hall is that direction.." he says aloud, pointing over the heads of the crowd milling around him, "..but was it a right or a left at the next cross-roads?"

Route to city hall:
He knows how to get there but he isn't entirely certain he is taking the precise route Umaveti intended him to take.. or if he thinks the route given isn't the best one. Was it a right or a left? Should he go straight at this intersection? Why would I need to go this way when the City Hall is that way? Who is that in the alley... they look kinda old'.. and poor!

While he will make it to City Hall eventually, Odd'n might take a meandering route (if his wisdom fails him) or be drawn into talking to an 'old/poor' person or helping some poor street urchin if he so spots one.

Wisdom: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (8) - 1 = 7
Perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21

Yes, right.. how silly of me.. he CLEARLY said it was this way! Odd'n thinks before setting off, moving to the side of the stream of people so he doesn't have to rush at the same pace and to afford him a better view into the alleys as he walks on, eyes scanning for any poor or old he may question (or help). With his hood drawn up and eyes scanning the alleys, Odd'n avoids eye contact with those in the street as much as possible-- he has no desire to bring the guards down upon him again-- but he does look from time to time at he purses of those passing by..

En route & being sidetracked:

On his walk he may be sidetracked by old/poor/extreme-poverty so here is a charisma check to see if they are all horrified by Odd'n again. He will approach by offering a copper of course (instead of opening his horrid mouth of jagged teeth right away).

Also-- maybe a particularly wealthy merchant or individual has an easy to snag item on his person. Odd'n isn't below trying to take something if he needs it. So another perception to see if anything catches his eye (and his sticky fingers) on the belt of a passing noble that he may attempt to snag. If he spots one such thing.. well.. here is a sleight of hand. Have fun ;P

Gwyndolin keeps her hands in the pockets of her jacket. A meeting with the mayor was not the time to let idle fingers get sticky. She pointedly keeps to the center of the streets, avoiding stalls and merchants alike. It was hard, but she had to break that habit somehow.

And apparently she wasn't the only one.

She walks up to the man who was clumsily trying to lift the purse off of a middle-aged merchant and taps him on the shoulder.

Thorn slipped easily through the market crowd after his mark. It was a fat pidgin, a foreign merchant by his clothing. He was being careful too. He had his purse concealed and had been on the alert for thieves since entering the market. Thorn had followed him through the market for nearly an hour already waiting for him to relax his guard enough. The merchant had just bought a meat pie from a vendor for lunch revealing where he had his purse concealed and Thorn was moving in. The mark was only a few more yards away. Thorn flexed his left hand dropping the dagger concealed up his sleeve into his hand.
A large green hand closed around Thorn's knife wielding left hand. Thorn looked up in shock and then up further to see the grim tusked visage of Tiny one of the Upright Man's enforcers.
Hi Tiny! Thorn said trying to sound cheerful. Damn right when I am about to pluck this pidgin too. How are you doing?
The boss wants to see you. The hulking half-orc rumbled. Now.
I will just come with you then shall I. Thorn said with a smile. the boss wouldn't have sent Tiny to get me if it wasn't important Thorn thought as he wracked his brain to think of something that might have drawn the ire of the head of the thieves guild. Tiny released his hand and moved off through the market crowd. People seen to melt of the gigantic half-orc's way. Thorn followed in his wake, tucking his dagger back up his sleeve as he went. With Tiny leading the way it only took twenty minutes to travel through the crowded afternoon streets and out through the gate into the North Shanty. Another ten minutes travel through the narrow warren of streets and allies that made up the shanty and they arrived at the headquarters of the thieves guild. It was an old coach in build right against the city wall. originally built to provide shelter to travelers who arrived at the city after the gates closed for the night.
Thorn and Tiny went inside through the main room and kitchen and down in to the basement of the building where the Upright Man kept his office. Tiny knocked once on the door then opened it and motioned for Thorn to go in. Tiny didn't follow Thorn inside which the boy took as a good sign.
You wanted to see me boss? He asked the older man sitting behind the large desk waiting for him.

Kingmaker Table 1

Baru--0820
The guard's mean demeanor quickly changed to one of horror. He stammers out the first part of his answer, he's so scared.

Stammering to Baru:

"Th-the docks! They're always looking for new hands and mercenaries, and there's the Upright Man...if you tell enough people in the north shanty that you're looking for work he'll find you..."

"...and then the mayor-" this last, louder, more comfortable addition to his answer was audible to passers-by, including one Umaveti Slave-Born.
The nagaji cuts off the guard with a start, "The mayor, Sgt. Yu," he pauses to make sure the guard has shut his trap, then turning to Baru continues, "has already expressed interest of your services, sir." Hearing nothing from the tiefling, he adds, "Unless there's some other red-skinned Asura-spawn with enormous arms around here somewhere," he feigns a look around.

Odd'n & Gwyn--0945
Though very very slow to follow Umaveti's directions, Odd'n quickly haps upon a elderly beggar in the park which boarders on the main street. Approaching the elderly woman coin-in-hand, he asks her about the underground slave-fighting ring. She looks at the coin and starts to talk, when a gust of wind blows back his hood revealing his disfigurements.

Afraid he'd lost her, he begins to walk away, but stops when he hears, "Wait," the old lady says, "you're not the only one trying to hide who they are," she whispers a word in Tien, while pulling on her ears. To Odd'n's amazement the ears pulled out like someone turning out their pockets. He took a step back when sitting in the old lady's place was an equally elderly white- and gold-colored Kitsune. She explains to him from that point that the guards have the area within the city walls locked down, nothing so major as an underground slave fighting pit could go down here, but if wanted to learn more, he should ask around the north or east shanties, that's where the low-lifes almost always ended up.

Odd'n thanks the elderly fox-lady, replaces his hood, and continues on his way to City Hall, making it half the way to the municipal square before seeing what he (mistakenly) perceives to be a wealthy merchant and their purse. His very clumsy attempt to pick the pocket is interrupted by a gentle, yet purposeful tap on the shoulder. Gwyn simultaneously warns Odd'n against the immorality of theft while subconsciously attempting to swipe the same purse. She fails.

Little do they know, this is Zared, a seasoned halfling trapper on his way to city hall to see if he can get a commission. With his nature-sharpened eyes, he sees everything going on around his belt pouch, and so he calls to the town guard on post on the street corner, "Help! I'm being robbed!"

Gwyn & Odd'n roll initiative or surrender.

The Upright Man is sitting facing away from his desk, and Thorn. "Sit down," a voice as calm and forceful as the ocean in fair weather echoes off the back wall of the dim office, lit only by a single candle on his desk. Thorn does as he's told, watching the elderly man feed his grey falcon, who's perched on the air of the boss's chair.

"I have a job for you," at this, Tiny hands Thorn an envelope addressed to Straker, his mentor.

"Read the letter, do what it says, don't ask questions." That last bit he added when Thorn looked like he was about to ask something...in spite of the fact that the boss clearly couldn't see him.

As Thorn is getting up to leave, the boss turns his head saying, "Oh and Thorn," Thorn stops, "be nice to the mayor."

Not sure if I like his tone, but this nagaji seems to know a wher the deeper pockets are. Baru claps the guard on the shoulder, holding his smirk, See, that wasn't so hard now as it. He then turns to the nagaji, walking towards him as he attempts to add sincerity to his voice. I'm afraid I'm one of a kind. The mayor though, I assume he is well financed? Where might I find him?

If the mayor is in need of a hired blade, I can only assume its illegal or sensitive, or both. Any way you look at it though, it makes for a hefty gain on my part.

Turning towards the tap on his shoulder, Odd'ns hands continue towards the purse. Unfortunately for him, he misjudged the location of the purse in his 'minds eye' and ended up lightly punching the man in the bottom. Moments later he hears the merchant call for help!

Looking between Gwyn, the merchant, and the approach of guards who heard the call for help-- Odd'n works his jaw uselessly as he fails to form any sensible words. Anxious grunts escape his lips as anxiety sets on him that he is soon to lose his freedom. "Uhm.. sorry.. I... sorry.." he utters before turning towards the nearest alley and making a break for it..

One thing you couldn't say about Gwyn, she was slow.

She shoves the purse into the merchant's chest after squeaking in surprise."Sorry, sorry!"

She takes off down the same alleyway that Odd'n takes. Her jacket flaring behind her as she runs.

Thorn sat when the Upright Man told him to sit. He took the letter Tiny handed him and shut up when he was told to shut up.
Be nice to the Mayor. Yes sir. Understood sir. Thorn replied to the Upright Man's final admonishment as he backed out of the room. Gods, I hate that. Thorn thinks to himself as the door closes behind him. He sagged a little with relief. When ever he met with the Upright Man he always got the feeling that if he made one wrong move or said one thing wrong Tiny would snap his neck. It was a little irrational considering that Thorn had never heard of the Upright Man ordering anyone killed, but there were a lot of rumors floating around about the boss. Thorn usually ignored the ones about the boss making a deal with the devil to get control of the guild, but some of the others were believable. especially the ones about the Upright Man having been a highly trained assassin.

Thorn retraced his steps up through the dilapidated inn and back into the allies of the shanty as he thought. Any one who knew Straker would already know that he wasn't in town and may not even be in this world anymore with Mantis Assassin's after him. Straker was a good thief, probably one of the best in the world, but he was a complete fool when it came to women. If this is a mission for Straker I can probably handle it unless it is blade work, but they probably wouldn't want Straker if it was just blade work.
Thorn went up the decrepit outside staircase to the second floor of the inn where he and Straker had kept a room. Straker had left in such a hurry that he had left almost everything behind. Thorn collected the rest of his knives and the other tools he might need for the Mayor's job. After a little thought he donned the thick leathers that Straker had gotten for him just a week ago. He also took the cache of gold hidden under the floor boards. It would be enough for a horse and some supplies if the job was a bad one and he needed to make a runner. Once equiped as best as he could be with out knowing anything about the job Thorn headed for the city hall to find out what the Mayor wanted. The only question was how was he supposed to get past the guards to get in to see him?

I have already spent the money from the cache on a mount and equipment but in game Thorn would not have purchased those things yet.

I make my way from the docks to the upper city hitting a few marks on the way. Eventually making my way to the shopping district in the upper city. I approach a guard, "I am looking for magic oddities, or high end merchandise, can you point me to a shop?"

Bronan--0830
The middle-aged Half-Orc gentleman named sitting and carving a figurine looks up over his spectacles at young Bronan and grins. He stands, walks over to where Bronan is admiring his handywork. He takes the wind-catcher in hand and tilts it so that the sunlight perfuses the figure perpendicularly. He then points at his creation's shadow. Looking down, Bronan sees that the negative of the artwork's shadow has the appearance of a dancing woman.

"That's what it is, young man, a trick of the light. Are you interested?"

Gwyn and Odd'n--0945; EDITED EDIT...I'm a dumb-dumb, there's a DC 10 for pocketing a coin, and Odd'n didn't succeed, the crime is still attempted theft
You'll need to translate your running away into combat actions during your turns. Gwyn should already know that if you get arrested, the mayor will probably hear about it.

Garret--0920; I need a perception check if you actually want to assess the guard's prowess.

"Forgive me if I don't take your word for it," the guard says sarcastically, while making a twirling motion with his finger indicating that he must turn around to be searched.

Perception DC 10 (unrelated to Garret's attempt to size up the guard):

You notice that everyone else attempting to enter the city from the docks is also being searched.

Baru--0900; Sorry, magical items, but no books
Soon, Baru finds himself in Municipal Square see map, use the zoom function for a better view. To his left is a small, but beautiful garden boasting only a single tree and two blooming shrubberies. The pavement is cleaner, but obviously older stone than the lower town's roads. Beyond the garden stands a 15' building who's upper half is wooden and new, where the lower half is clearly the same age of the pavement, and made from the same stone. Not impressive, but charming in it's own way. To his south he sees a pool as old as the pavement, with water shooting out from the center, the Square Fountain. In front of it is a man, shouting with fervor to no one in particular. To his right, stands a taller, yet still smallish, fortress-looking building the entrance to which stand two armed guards.

Bronan--0835
The half-orc's bright eyes dim, before he says, "Terribly sorry, my wife would have my nose if I let it go for less than four gold. This wood isn't from the trees around here, you see; it's sturdier, lasts longer, but costs more to import." He quickly adds more cheerfully, "Feel free to look at some of my smaller trinkets, a wooden holy symbol for instance. I have Shelyn, Milani, and Pyralis the three big deities 'round these parts. I can make any other in about a day or so if need be."

Gwyn & Odd'n--Round 1
Gwyn doesn't have a coin purse. She caught herself before taking Odd'n's. Odd'n doesn't have a coin purse either, he failed his SoH.

Gwyn high-tails it down the alley, out of sight. If neither the trapper nor the guard can see you on your next turn, you can roll stealth to hide from them as a free action.

I will concur that the wood is not from native trees, but I have doubts concerning the cost of collecting driftwood off the beach. But to placate the ire of your wife, I'll offer a crown. More than that, and she's motivated by sentimentality for the piece rather than business sense."

Garret--0930
Having finished his search, the guard answers Garret's question, "The upper city? Sure, there's a shop for everything up there, provided you've got the coin. Anything you're looking for in particular?"

Bronan--0840
"Are you suggesting that since most of what I make is of driftwood, that I don't be sure to purchase imported wood for things that require more stability? I'm afraid I'm going to have to ask you to leave if you're going to continue to insult me." The surprisingly intelligent, but still orcish woodworker stands taller as he speaks. @Bronan: I'd never thought about it before, but I guess I would've taken a Wisdom roll, since the DC for intimidate actions in battle are based on the victim's Wisdom. I'll use that in later campaigns since you didn't get to use it here.
