Iozef and Windle set the body of Old Man Marshan carefully on the altar for "interrogation", while the rest of you are walking around the room, looking for clues.

Mireza examines the scimitar, noticing it's recent make. Perhaps belonging to Marshan himself, the blade shows a basic magical enchantment improving its edge and its balance (+1, there is a loot spoiler in the Campaign Info tab. I'll update as you claim objects.)

Valiard checks the torn bars. They show know tool marks, but a bit of slime. Also, he can tell they were put in place recently, as the mortar shows no wear or dust.

Grigor can't get the "thing''s trail, but his scrutiny allows him to find the recent trail of humans, walking in the crypt. These are very recent.

From what you gather, it seems a crew of five came here through the tunnel maze, then barred access while working on freeing the staircase leading up to the house in Slipper Market. The theory so far is that they conjured more than they could chew, the thing forcing its way first to Slipper Market, then back down in the tunnel maze. The ghouls would have arrived in the aftermath...

As you walk and search and think, you can't help but go back on the names, thinking whether you know them...

Baskerwhel... Hyve... Myre...

All the while, an ancient Pharasmin bounces off the walls of the crypt, lifting through the pertrified tree branches as Iozef calls back the spirit of the dead to answer his questions.

Silly bastards... playing with 'powers' the like we aren't supposed to know of. Bloody shades of Caliphas.

Grigor worked back from where the slime ended and towards the group.

Five bedrolls, barred door, dank dungeon out of the daylight where no one will look... some sort of damned 'cult' who got in over their fornicating heads.

As the eerily chant began to echo and warble through the darkness, he fell silent and involuntarily shivered as he felt the power of the words.

It had been years since he had used magic... not since Caliphas in fact but... if the events of the last few hours were any indication, he would have to stain his soul with that devilry again if only to keep him and others alive and put an end to something that had no business being in the same world as he was.

Already made my Knowledge (local) roll, and Crove was the only name that pinged on Mireza's radar. Anyone else care to roll?

Mireza finishes turning the scimitar over in her hands and follows Valiard to the bars. "If they came this way, rather than down from above, why did they bar the way behind them? And where did they come from? To his new building," she nods at the corpse on the altar, "...from one of the others'?"

Was Grigor able to tell if the other three members of the cult were here and got away? Which way did they go? I suppose residents of Carrion Hill don't necessarily carry ID, but if we turned out the pockets of the second dead cult member, might we get some indication of who he might be?

Valiard rests his hands on the bent bars and peers into the darkness for a moment. "I don't know Mireza. There are too many questions. Valiard:

The reference to Keeper Baskerwhel could be about Glem Baskerwhel. He is a hunch-backed hermit who lives in the Wrythe about a day’s travel east of Carrion Hill. He is nonetheless well known in Carrion Hill as a potion-maker, and he visits the city often, always staying with his friend Arlend Hyve at the Elm Way Church on these visits. Come to think of it, the second corpse could be a hunchback, but hard to say...

Keeper Myre. You know of Rupman Myre, a middenstone baron. He owns a large vathouse down in the Filth along the river banks. It could be him, or a relative?

Valiard pauses as he passes one of the corpses. He nudges the body with his foot as he looks at it intently. "Does anyone else think that this body is a bit hunchy...? Glem Baskerwhel is a hunchback hermit and potion maker. I have sold Glem herbs on occasion that he wasn't able to grow out at his place in the Wrythe."

Valiard squats down and rifles through the remaining clothes on the corpse.

Looking for shards of glass from broken potion flasks, stains on the hands from handling herbs and reagents or anything that smells like the remains of potion.

The chanting resumes and leaves the the crypt filled with the eerie light of your arcane source, filtering through the branches of the petrified trees and forming a web of shadows on its arched ceiling.

For a moment, the only sound is the slow dripping of water on the stone altar, reverberating through the chamber, then the body convulses and twists, its grotesque eyes opening in ghastly fear, mouth foaming slowly. The body shudders and seems to calm down some. The lips tremble slightly, fists clenched.

Iozef.

The raucous sound of air filling crushed lungs is heard through the crypt, breaking the monotonous dripping of water. The voice comes out dark, foul and garbled.

From the Dark Tapestry, the ancient lord Yog-Sothot we summoned forth from his 2,000 year slumber. What a force to behold! How perfect his abominable state. Our magic was supposed to hold it... Yet it is still weak, growing stronger every minute...

The Keepers of the Oldest is group dedicated to the Old Gods. Armed with directions to the Sunless Grove. We contacted its ancient ghosts, using the Pnakotic Manuscripts, and used them to force open the portal to the Dark Tapestry and learn great and terrible secrets from those that dwell beyond.

The body then exhales slowly, becoming limp and grey as the crypt crawls silent but for the maddening dripping sound.

Iozef takes a deep breath as the spell ends and stands, brushing himself off. "I have such a manuscript upon my person, Mr. Tessar. We do have a slight issue of not being able to translate it, though. And Madam Mireza is right ... if this creature is weak now, one can only imagine what it is capable of at full strength. I dare say, if we do not stop it, and soon, there will be nothing left. Least of all us." He says as a matter of fact. "Ancient lord Yog-Sothot, hm. Does that ring a bell, Mr. Thetra?" Having nothing else to do with her day, Mireza falls in step with the Crow. As they climb the Hill, she speaks to any neighbors or clients she sees in the street as they pass, asking what news they have heard -- and where the evacuees are planning on going. Diplomacy to gather information 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (13) + 9 = 22 She doesn't have 1d4 hours to spend on it, but she ought to be able to pick up some limited rumors or scuttlebutt along the way.

Iozef eyes the Crow curiously. As he walks away, Iozef's curiosity gets the better of him. "Mr. Washburn! Hold a moment!" He says as he moves to catch up. "You did not finish your sentence, sir. You said, 'The central is at Rag-, I mean Crown Manor'. What did you mean by this? What is 'Rag'?"

Washburn blushes and looks at Grigor: "Well... It's just a nickname... C-Crown Manor, we often call R-Rag Manor... Because, you know, the old flags..."

You quickly make your way up the hill, back to Crown Manor, again noticing the numerous old flags flying from it's parapets. Rumors reach you as you walk through crowds heading down, of a second house that was "collapsed". People seem to think the Hill itself is perhaps crumbling.

The maddening rain continues to pummel your head and you reach the Manor completely drenched.

The Manor is in a state of alert. The central courtyard holds a command centre now; a vast tent set up in its middle, with courier going back and forth with reports and orders.

You find Mayor Heggry in the tent, with the newly appointed Commander Feldk. Not far, discussing with some merchants in a corner, you notice Councilwoman Dimyian.

Heggry and Feldk look directly at you as you enter the tent: "Thank the gods! You're alive! What did you find?!"

Valiard keeps his eyes and ears open for any snippets of information as they move through the courtyard. The bustle and movement is unnerving to Valiard...the whole city seems to be alive with activity, on the edge of panic.

Perception 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (20) + 10 = 30

Valiard keeps his cloak and hood up as they enter the tent, remaining near the entrance rather than bustling his way inside.

Why are we in this tent, rather than in the manor? Was it the manor that got attacked?
