I'd say it more means that I'm not advising people take sub-par replacements for class features that not only aren't as good, but reduce their effectiveness in their own class.

Wouldn't that depend on one's opinion of the role of a particular class?

Maybe, but I don't think anyone's opinion of utility mages would be "reliably de-magics traps", especially when that same spell level brings Haste, something much more useful to prepare multiples of because it's fricking Haste.

...Craft Wand solves that issue on both accounts. Wand of Haste or Wand of Dispel Magic, either one is plenty useful.

And by sixth level when a wizard first gets their third-level spells, a Rogue will still likely be better at doing traps. My main point wasn't that they can't, just that it's not an easy replacement for a rogue's capabilities, or necessarily an efficient one.

Point taken, I'll agree there.

With that settled, here's the updated applicant roster so far. Don't think I've missed anyone who's submitted something solid. Still waiting on Rhia's background reworking, backgrounds at all from Morgan and Jasper.

Arcane-
Yao Xin - Kitsune Sorcerer
Jasper Smoot - Nagaji Summoner/Wizard

-Divine-
Rhia Van Der Geist - Human Oracle
Venator Legatti - Aasimar Shaman
Victor Wright - Dhampir Inquisitor

-Martial-
John Kaiser - Human Fighter
Morgan Darlock - Lorewarden
Anastasia Botnick - Human Urban Ranger

-Skill-
Walther - Half-Elf Detective/Vampire Hunter
Kelvan Shadowvale - Strix Investigator
Tom Valendeer - Half-Elf Dirge Bard
Ophelia - Clockwork Archivist
Shang the Apothecary - Samsaran Alechemist
Dara Shadeshard - Dwarf Burglar

-Hybrid/Other-
Lady Sallra Qillon Evergreen - Fey Psion
Devan Steed - Human Rogue (Investigator)/Summoner

Recruitment is going to run through until either Thursday or Friday, depending on how things work out for me, and if there's someone lingering on the verge of finishing and could use the extra time. Still open to new interested parties, so long as they can whip up the vast majority of a character in the time frame.

@Spooky GM
Not quite finished yet, but profile about half done - I have a question though.
I'd like him to have picked up a Preconstructed Spellbook, specifically the Book of Harms.
This would be the spellbook he used to turn from a Sorceror into an Arcanist.
Given the Arcanist gets a bunch of spells for free, and that book is crazy expensive, are you okay if I don't pay for the 8 1st level spells?
Alternatively given that the Harms' ability costs 365gp, can I get it for his actual spellbook?
Combined with the ability to use a point from the reservoir, and the exploit, it means he can do a 20pt Burning Hands at level 2. That's enough to set buildings on fire (which I would like in his backstory).

The book gives a lot of spells, and since it includes spells up to third level, has use past the starting point, so I would definitely make you have to pay for that book. That said, if you want to spend little over half your starting gold on it, then go for it.

@Spooky GM: Spring-loaded Wrist Sheath. A lot of people underestimate the usefulness that item.

Well the new investigator is out, and it pretty much nerfs any chance of my submission being any good at combat ever. *sigh*

@Dara: Right, my bad. The spring-loaded is the far better option given how it's barely more expensive.

I'll have background reworked tomorrow and leveled to 2 by later today.

I just had an interesting idea, but I'll have to wait until I get home to see if I can pull it off. If I can, then I'll be far more useful if the group were captured.

Sounds like my kinda game...I'll have something together for your consideration by Wedensday evening.

Looking to reflavor the Ancestors Mystery so that it's not the ghosts of her ancestors but spirits she controls through sheer force of will, some willingly, some grudgingly. The more malevolent ones aren't thrilled about it and act out in any way they can, manifesting as her Oracle's curse.

@Dara: Can't wait to see what it is.

@Rhia: That would work fine; I never understood why ancestors would be disruptive dicks like that.

So I am very interested in this. My current idea for a character would be a Warebat-kin (bloodmarked) named Cruentus Angealous. His story is a complicated one.

When he was young he was born on a vast estate of a Lord Ackles. Born into the slave class of cheliax (although I can alter this to anywhere that would be convenient). His family was under this mans vampiric spell. His family being the subjects of sadistic experiments of the fiend. They were exposed to lycanthropy to become more akin to the creatures his lord preferred.

When the towns folk finally became aware of the immortal nature of his lord they came knocking at his door step with flames and pitchforks. Mistaking the mutated and twisted servants as spawn of Ackles, they proceeded to slay them viciously before the boys eyes, though they never did find his Master.

Happening upon the boy one of the locals named Gravous Lector took the unremarkable child in, thinking it a miracle that this innocent has been spared the ravages of this cursed place.

Then puberty hit... and the boy was at school when another boy had heard of Cruentus's beginnings and began bullying the thin, pale, large eared, bug eyed boy, and had went too far. He and his friends beat Cruentus within an inch of his life and then all of a sudden his latent genes kicked in.

Growing a maw of razor sharp teeth, his jaw elongating, his nose flattening, appendages becoming longer and more lithe, and his eyes turned milk white. Cruentus lashed out at the boy grabbing him like he had seen his old master do to so many, wrenching his head to the side and sinking his awful teeth into the vein of that ignorant boy.
Cruentus had his first taste of blood that day. A taste that would haunt him, not just because he had killed a human being, but because he had enjoyed it. After he had realized the horror of what he had done Cruentus ran. He ran into the woods to a place he often went when he felt out of sorts.

Scared, tired, and alone Cruentus didn't know what to do and finally decided to go home. When he returned though he was not greeted by the loving arms of his adopted father, but rather the burning flames of what used to be his home, accompanied by the screams of his adopted family.

Fortunately for the townsfolk Gravous was a kind a loving father and had instilled in the boy a solid moral base. Though embittered, Cruentus was intelligent and understood why the townsfolk reacted the way they did. He blamed only two people for his family's death, himself and Ackles. With his guilt, new found blood thirst, and need for revenge, he made a vow. He would seek out his old Master and make him pay for this curse and his family's death.

Sorry for the wall of text but I wanted to get a good back story in along with some characters you could possibly use. That all being said I mostly just want to play this race. I am willing to work around the party as to what class. I will start building the actual crunch of the character today. I just wanted to get the concept to you first.

Not a bad base, but it's lacking in having accomplished something to get the attention and be put on the team. Especially he himself being exactly the kind of thing that they're likely to hunt, he'd need to have a real good reason for it all, and to play nice. Unless there's some evidence Lord Ackles has moved operations to Korvosa for some reason, why would he even want to be around in the first place?

His intense hatred for his old master and his ilk has led him to be an expert on hunting down terrors of the night. And as for his old master, Ackles is in the wind and in pursuit Cruentus in his adulthood has cut down many a fiend in chase. His motivation is to stop the perversion of life by undead and lycans to prevent tragedies like his own. While revenge on his master is always in the back of his mind Cruentus is always looking for a opportunity vent his anger on the local monstrosity.

And I understand we would be hunting things much like himself, however I feel the self loathing demon seeking redemption and revenge to be a attractive concept. What better way to hunt a monster than to have a monster hunt them? If it doesn't fit the concept you have in mind for the campaign I would be willing to come up with another character.

A little of his story is left untold mostly due to lack of class. I kinda wanted to probe the mind of the other players as to what the party might need. I was thinking possibly the inquisitor, ranger, slayer, hunter, or barbarian to complete the "hunter or the night" feel. However like I said I am flexible and could definitely see him as a caster or gish, Using the divine or arcane to better help him resist his inborn nature and the lure of the monsters he hunts. Also could see changing from a werebat kin to dhamphir.

I'd say it's best to build whatever you'd feel like playing. There's currently a wide enough pool of players that, looking at the list, I can see a lot of different configurations that produce functional parties. We're not really short any major roles.

@Anastasia Botnick: Looks solid, but I'm a little surprised by the decision to go two-weapon fighting with only daggers.

I am well aware of the advantages of using shortswords instead of daggers from a mechanical point of view. However, I selected daggers from a fluff point of view; it seems like something Anastasia would use (they're easily hidden and more common in the city).

If you want me to I can change to shortswords. I'll be finishing up the crunch later today (skills and equipment).

Thanks for the comments.

Well, my concern is more just the really low damage output of them. In a party where there may only be one character particularly focused on combat, two attacks of 1d4+whatever as the main damage output isn't all that great, y'know?

Okay, point taken. I'll switch to shortswords. 1d6 + whatever is a little better.

Boys boys, What can I say, A lady has to look her best. :)

Also when she gets the Cash, a Revolver and Rifle will put her up there for Damage. Got to love them Cold Iron rounds.

Profile updated

Added Qualities for group benefit:

- Increased chance of breaking group out of incarceration.

- Better Melee capability

I'm just throwing my hat in the ring. What I've got here is a Skinwalker (Witchwolf) heretic inquisitor of the Pharasman faith. He's now working underground as a sort of private eye.

I'll most likely have my background and crunch up before the deadline on Thursday.

Quick question. I would like to play a lunar oracle. However I need to know your ruling on moonbridge? As it reads it works like a wall of force. I can understand if you wanted to rule it works in another way. I have looked for ruling on this. It mostly just matters so I know what revelations i want to take.

I've not been clear - not expecting a free book!

The book costs 900. 365 for the ritual, and then standard scribing costs for all the spell levels.

I was asking if
(A) I could get the ritual without the book, then add it to my free spellbook (thinking not)
(B) could have this as my spellbook, pay cost but not pay the scribing cost for the free spells (which is not going to be much saving anyway)

I am okay with paying the full cost though

@zomblishaman: Yeah, Wall of Force.

@Harakani: Oh, right, okay. I shouldn't answer posts first thing upon waking up. My bad. Maybe meet in the middle; you can add all the first-level spells in "for free" (read: on loan to someone who is not quite interested in being repaid with money), but down the line you'll have to cough up the cost for second and third-level spells.

Ah, it's all good:)
I thought about it and couldn't think of a situation where I've had a wizard who has regretted having a good spell selection. While normally I can see getting special equipment, I think a wizard-like-pc is better off buying spell selection

I'd like to tune the final spells picked in addition to the book depending on who we get if that's okay. If we haven't got a bard I definitely want charm person, but if we've got two I want to leave it for them.

What does Alaznist offer?
Primarily he offers pure damage: Alaznist can output 20 damage in a cone three times per day if necessary with only a small chance of killing himself.
Very flexible full-caster; I think Arcanists are the most flexible casters as they have no opposition schools.
good knowledge skills +8 (In most games I'd say great...)
decent social skills and perception (+6)
excellent Appraise and Spellcraft skills (+9)

Cheers
Harakani

@Laznist: Yeah, everything looks like it checks out. And sure, spell selection is one of those things that's good to hold off on a little until you can eke out a good coverage with your party.

Oo it's hotting up now.

Some great builds and back grounds.

Indeed. The competition will be rough. Will definitely be an interesting party in the end, though.

Still here and interested, just been busy.

I was being serious :) I'm not certain I like the art style overall, but I always approve of a good bowler hat.

Tomorrow is probably going to be the deadline, depending on how absolutely bored I get sitting around, and how many people are still just short of finishing. Still waiting on some crunches and some backgrounds, although a couple people haven't posted in like three days since they posted crunch and said backstory was forthcoming, so I'm not expecting all of those posters to come back.

I am still waiting from things for these characters:
-Rhia Van Der Geist
-Victor Wright
-Jasper Smoot
-Cruentus Angealous
-Hager Snarleman Smith

Not a "goddamnit guys why aren't you done yet" so much as just a reminder for anyone.

If anyone thinks they can whip up an entire character and wants to throw their hat in, then by all means, go for it. I've made tenth-level characters in their entirety in one night before. Otherwise, everyone who is finished at the time where I arbitrarily decide to cut it off will be considered.

Just dropping by to clarify that I haven't disappeared !

[btw, Top Hat > Bowling Hat]

I'm still around too, crossing my fingers here.

Woo. Not much full-arcane competition.

I have a few hats, you like hats to, got a real nice African bush hat.

And her hat is indeed a Bowler Hat,

Video here :)

Still here, just skulking in the shadows.

Kickin' about.

Also still here, looking forward to selection :) Good luck everyone!

Still hear as well.

For some reason I feel Tom would look good in a tophat...

Ok ok, everybody who applied is here... ^_^

It seems you're not the only one bored Spooky.

I finished the crunch (skills and equipment). Let me know if you need anything else.

Thanks for considering me for the game! Looking forward to your decision tomorrow.
