Blue Team: Magnus, the lucky bastard, generates enough magic to drop all three leaving your way clear.

There were two gates to the south of the courtyard and one to the right of you but that gate is closed.

Red Team: You hustle out of the gate with the sounds of guards coming up from behind.

Opportunities to hide are scant just outside the courtyard - the gate opens up towards the temple of Forsetta, but spinning to right you can make a run for the merchants district. To the left lies open ground and then the half completed ducal palace.

Sorry all, very busy weekend. arranging for my son to come home from college for Thanksgiving

Liam sighs as the change to use his sword skill was thwarted by a bad case of the sleepies.

Liam follows Magnus as fast as he can out of the compound, keeping an eye out for any pursuers.

Red Team: You haven't specified where you were headed as I gave you a few options but the smart money is heading to Old Town. Plenty of ally ways etc.

For the first two rounds of the chase there is nothing you can do - they can see you and you can see them. There are people about but not thickly clustered enough to get you hidden.

You dash both times and so do the guards in hot pursuit.

You plough into old town as fast as you can and for that round you have a chance.

Stealth Karl (advantage with disadvantage = normal roll) 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (12) + 0 = 12

Vs. Passive Perception 10

The DMG says that you guys escape. Simplistic if a wee bit boring. Ce le vive.

For simplicity and to get the time lines back in sync we'll say that Blue team escapes via one of the rear gates without issue.

You find yourselves back at the Blarney Chicken with a handful of paperwork, a sheet in code and several books. Time passes and you keep your heads down and act innocent as a patrols pass by and even enter the Inn but nothing more comes of it assuming you make sure you are acting inconspicuously.

Eric of Forsetta, again in nondescript clothes, joins you.

You appear to have stirred up a hornets nest. The guards, it seems, were complacent before but not now. All gates are manned and passes are needed to get in or out of the barracks. Still, the horse has bolted already. What were you able to find?

Maguns removes the various papers and books he "liberated" from the room. He also takes out the coffer he had hidden.

"Well this is what we got. Not too sure what to make of this weird writing, and this coffer is locked."

Karl Gufstass wrote:

Yes we can.

Eric secures the store room of the Inn for the conversation.

Lets see what you have here... hmmmm... drafting a levy of men? Additional arms? Draco prepares for war - look, these were signed the day before the Dukes pronouncement. Is it the Duke giving the orders or is it Draco?.

He frowns over the code and the casket.

Magic may bring out the meaning of this - perhaps I can secure a scroll of Comprehend Languages if one of you is able to use such. As for this box? I am not skilled in locks - you may need to either find one who is. I do not have any contacts from that walk of life but I suppose I could try the one locksmith in town if you want to trust me with it.

He assures you he will return to the inn shortly and hustles off in search of said scroll.

He returns after an hour and hands it to Magnus.

Magnus would like to scribe the scroll into his spell book so he will have it always...it would take 2 hours and 50gp. Or I can just read it and get the info off the parchment.

If you have 50gp for materials I am fine with you doing that

Only Magnus can read the scroll, though he can copy it down for everyone to read or read it out loud.

Quote:

My dear Draco, future Duke of Rhoona,

The wheels are in motion now. The pronouncement against the dwarves will be forthcoming shortly, and little resistance is apparent thus far from the populace. The slobbering idiot of a Duke will only have a short time left to reign when he declares this foolishness - I am sure you must agree that my curse is working admirably!Be alert: the moment for you to move is near!

Xanathon,
High Priest of Cretia

Cretia! I never would have guessed, says Eric.

I must see the Duke and ascertain this for myself, and if so remove the curse if there be one, and lay this matter before the Duke himself - if it be that I can get to him. Draco is his chief minister and I cannot hope to make any accusations in his presence or the presence of the ducal guard who have been compromised!

He hands over 100 gold coins to each of you for payment.

Funds as agreed. Stay where you will for the night and let us meet back here noon on the morrow.

Liam thinks for a bit at Karl's question, Well there was this girl, Penny, she always knew how to get into my bedroom at the boarding school, and there is also Elric, but I think he is in jail by now.

Liam thinks out loud at other possibilities, I wonder what Penny, is, ahhh, up, glancing at Astrid, Nevermind about Penny.

Before the subject of Penny can be further questioned, Oh look, money. he says changing the subject as he grabs his pouch of coins.

Liam is lost in the sight of all this coin. yeah, noon, moors, here, got it.

Magnus is very happy with the results of this adventure. Not only did he earn some money, but he also added to his arcane knowledge by scribing the Comprehend Language scroll into his spell book. His masters at the Great School would be proud of him!

"Well maybe find this 'Penny' and see if she would be willing to help us!"

Aye, we need to find Penny, Liam.

Karl pockets the coins and stands.

The night is spent looking for Penny, then looking for Penny's friends then dealing with the boyfriends of Penny's friends, then dealing with a crew of sailors that some how got involved - a rousing good night of drinking (except for Astrid) and fighting (especially Astrid) is had by all.

Penny is able to open the box. Inside is a pair of spectacles with weird multi-tinted lenses. The glasses radiate magic and you assume that they can be used to read codes and languages given there is no record of Draco having any magic of his own to do the job.

Those drinking can cross off 5gp in overpriced wine, drinks for Penny and her friends and good food. Feel free to write in whatever debauchery you wish as part of your drunken recollections. Non Drinkers need to cross off 2gp

The next day finds some of you nursing a sore head and bruised knuckles and back at the Blarney Chicken.

The Ducal herald, looking somewhat nervous, approaches surrounded by town guards and rolls out another proclamation.

Be it known to all that His Benign Munificence Duke Stephen Rhoona, has declares the following to be his official decree:

Whereas it is apparent to all but the most feeble minded that the sun is the most illustrious of heavenly bodies,

And whereas it is of the unmost importance to maintain the goodwill of this most blazing orb of flame during the coming strife,

It is hereby decreed that the burning of all combustible materials - to wit, wood, oil, wax, cloth, peat etc etc etc - is outlawed during the period of the suns resting, lest we incur the jealous wrath of his most heatful self.

The hours include those times between the suns touching of the western horizon and his climbing once again into the heavens of the east!

Such is the word of the Duke of Rhoona.

Karl partakes in the drinking with a good-natured aggression. It brings back many memories of his days among the tribes.

Upon awaking and hearing the decree, Karl simply shakes his head. He picks up the coded message and looks at the glasses innthebopen box. He decides to wake Magnus.

Magnus, let's decode the message.

It reads as Magnus' previous translation above except now anyone wearing the glasses can read it for themselves.

Goliath Barbarian 3 HP 35/35, AC 16, Initiative +1, Perception +3 PP13 PI 9

Aukan drinks until he cannot stand, then he fights until he cannot even walk...and then he managed to make it back to the Inn somehow with most of his limbs intact.

And that is how you have a pleasant evening! he bellows the next morning.

Magnus has a few drinks and a good meal, but spends most of his time examining the glasses.

"These are fantastic! Now I will not need to worry about having to take time to cast a spell to read unknown scripts! Brilliant!"

If no one objects, Magnus will keep the glasses. He will also commission a tradesperson to make a case for them to keep them protected. (A hardened glasses case!!)

Magnus will need to find then see an artificer but he can secure them in the mean time without too much concern.

Waiting a day or two more to account for Thanksgiving

Female Human

Sorry for my abscence. Astrid has been... I dunno, actually. Taking tea in her room, I guess, bandaging up her wounds.

With Astrid hiding in her room, Liam is a little more relaxed with his former "girlfriend" and his current "crush" in the same room would be a bit embarrassing.

Liam does avoid drinking the booze and instead does his best to fend off any advances Penny may initiate. the constant fear that Astrid would catch them in a rather compromising situation.

as the evening goes on, Liam takes the time to show off is outstanding fighting skills and tell the story of how he had to fend off three trained soldiers by himself and protect a cowering wizard at the same time.

a little embellishment of the situation at the barracks conveniently leaving out the sleep spell

And Once we were able to secure the treasure in the keep, there we stood in the courtyard, three burly soldiers barred our escape.

Liam pauses for dramatic effect. I handed the treasure to the mage as he stood cowering at the ferocity of our adversaries. but I stood my ground. Sword drawn, "I think you guys are out classed" I told them, but they didn't believe me.

Liam draws his sword, and with some twirls and acrobatic steps Liam flaunts his skill With a quick leap and sidestep I was able to bring my blade down upon the head of the first soldier. and I barely lost momentum as I circled around swinging like so...

Liam swings his sword knocking a pitcher and several mugs of ale onto the floor. Ahhhh, oops. anyway the blade wounded the second soldier. a grievous wound it was. the third showed great determination as he lunged at me. but I was too fast and I leaped out of the way.

Liam leaps up onto a table knocking all sorts of platters and mugs all over the place. I then twirled my sword into the air and catching it like so. he switches his grip on the sword, and with a quick bonk on the skull I knocked the third soldier unconscious.

As Liam finishes his tale his foot slips on some spilled ale and he goes toppling over. Hoping to avoid getting hurt he reaches out to catch himself but managed to grab the shirt of a nearby lady, ripping it off.

Liam lay there on the ground hold some ladies brazier in his hand.

Liam just sort of blows off Karl's comment, He never did have much of a sense of humor.

He looks at Magnus with a rather quizzical look as he gets up from the floor.

handing the lady her Brazier back Liam ponders Magnus' question for a second as he scans the common room of the tavern.

she is, ahhhh, right over there. he says point to Penny across the common room.

Are you sure you didn't get bonked too hard? She did open the box for you and you got those magic glasses inside. remember?

anyway, if you want to talk to her then go ahead. I have something I need to do.

grabbing some flowers off a nearby table, Liam heads up to Astrid's room knocking at the door.

ninja'd by the gm, disregard this then.

The next morning, Karl awakens and spends time in silent meditation to Frey. He than dresses and washes before jostling the others and heads down for some breakfast.

When the others gather from their drunken revelries, Karl poses the next actions by the group.

Will it do any good to approach the current Duke with this plot, considering the curse he is under? More likely than not, our revelation will fall on deaf ears. Mayhap we find those loyal to the cursed duke and show them the plot of Draco? Also, a Remove Curse spell or scroll needs to be found so that we may try to lift the current Duke's affliction.

As you are musing on this Eric of Fosetta returns, again in non descript clothes.

It is worse than I feared. Access to the Duke is difficult in the extreme - it took all my influence and my station to see him and he is in a sorry state. I did what I could for him but it is not sufficient it seems. When it rains one cannot catch the water in a bucket - it needs be that one goes to the cloud that sheds the rain. I have another mission for you - Enter the temple of Cretia, get to Xanathons chambers and get whatever you can about the curse. I recommend you enter in stealth but in force as well - it could be dangerous.

Eric waits expectantly.

The temple is housed in the Ethengarian quarter - it speaks to Xanathons influence that they have had an established temple for the last five or six years.

I recommend you travel there at night - the recent Ducal decree about fires will make your passage through the quarter much easier. For now? rest and gather what supplies you will.

Is this considered a short or long rest? If it is long, then I will cast some healing spells before. If it is short, then I will use a HD of recovery.

Long rest - technically you rested the night before

You make your way through the Ethangarian sector. There is a sizable population here for a city that is many miles away from their own lands. Most of the area is given up to corrals holding horses, a few cattle and goats, or tents - the living quarters of the people who reside here.

You move in a steady quiet pace. The odd person notices you but says nothing and views you without curiosity. In violation of the Dukes decree there are a few fires scatted through out the encampment but at this hour they have burned low and are mostly coals.

The Temple of Cretia itself is a massive stone structure, and only three doorways are visible, all on the front wall. All of these portals are made of sturdy wood. One of the doors is open and you would be able to slip in.

The double doors lead into broad corridor, about 30 feet long and then into the main sanctuary of the worshippers of Cretia. Massive stone columns support a roof that is 20 feet above the floor.

A raised dais, opposite the doors, elevates a statue of the grotesque Cretia. The god is pictured with a scowling human face upon the torso of a gorilla, with four bear-like feet. Its eyes will glitter evilly with reflected torchlight, as each of the columns holds a bracket with a burning torch set in it.

So far there are no people that can be seen.

Entry into the large room shows two doors across the far wall, one on each side of the raised dais... and three doors on each side on the walls on the walls nearest to you as you enter.
