Giorgio Karakos |
Giorgio looked down the gullet of the reptile, and thoughts of justice were temporarily overridden by ones of prudence. Promptly dropping his crossbow, he pulled his scimitar and shield out, shifting his stance and energies to defense.
Shifting to Judgement of Protection as a swift action, increasing AC to 16. I think swapping gear takes up the rest of his actions, but if not, he'll be fighting defensively.
Gern Hammerfold |
Gern heard the snap of the crocodiles mouth and momentarily checked his companions. In that time Lamm had slipped away a few feet. The dwarf glowered and chose to trust his companions to deal with the beast.
"Ye've lived long enough at know never at mess with a dwarf o' tha clans ye scunner. Ye knew it were ye death from tha moment ye cut his beard. Aye, and I am the face o' your death. Look on me and know that Pharasma will see and judge ye unworthy!"
Gern will follow up the five foot step and attack. Back to normal attack and armour now he isn't charging. 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 121d10 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
Kazadarin Darlok |
Kazadarin moves to flank Lamm with his dwarf companion

Kazadarin Darlok |
Forgot to add +3 damage for power attack.
Tiny Litsy |
Litsy released her arrow at the crocodile, hoping to injure and distray it. She stayed on her guard -in case the beast decided to attack her instead.
Fight defensively. AC 18.
Attack: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (1) - 1 = 0
Well. I choose to use the Harrow Card, and reroll it!
Attack: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (10) - 1 = 9
Fate hates me... At least it isn't a fumble.
GM Aest |
Laijiri sends another orb of acid at the crocodile, which lets out a primeval hiss as the acid splashes into the water next to it.
Orb@Crocodile: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
Aerodus's bolt slams into Gaedren Lamm's right side almost at the same time Kazaradin's greatsword sweeps down on his left shoulder. Though off-balance and stunned, he still manages to hang onto his dagger, sweeping it up toward Kaz's face. "I'll do your other side, whelp!"
Lamm Attack (Kaz): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
The vicious blow turns on Kaz's sword, and Lamm once again drops into a defensive position.
1d7 ⇒ 3
Meanwhile, the crocodile swims toward Litsy, emerging from the water in an explosion of teeth and foul-smelling breath. Its jaws once again clap shut on nothingness, and it sinks back into the water.
Crocodile Bite (Litsy): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10
Someday, an attack will hit. It might not be one of MY attacks, but it'll hit!
Giorgio Karakos |
Giorgio took a single step to his left, hoping to distract the croc enough for Litsy to find a vital point. While he wasn't as practiced with his scimitar, he let fly a careful blow from behind his shield, maintaining his defenses while keeping the croc tied up. He'd caught the splash of blood out of the corner of his eye; between the dwarf and the scarred human, Lamm was not likely to be much longer for this world.
Maintaining Judgement of Protection, fighting defensively to bump AC to 18.
Attack: 1d20 - 2 ⇒ (16) - 2 = 14
Damage if hit: 1d6 ⇒ 4
Gern Hammerfold |
Gern stopped talking and focused on swinging his weapon with more accuracy. Lamm had to die so Gern could go to his companions aid with the huge water beast.
attack vs Lamm. 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 131d10 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
Tiny Litsy |
"You stink, Gobbleguts," Litsy exclaimed, her face filled with disgusted as she just experienced what a crocodile's breath smellt like.
Eeeeew....
She saw Giorgio attacking the crocodile and, understanding his strategy, she prepared another arrow, and waited for an opportunity.
Still fighting defensively, in case an attack would hit. AC 18.
(Sneak, maybe, in case the crocodile is distracted -or flanked?) Attack: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (15) - 1 = 14 Surprisingly, it isn't THAT bad...
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 2
If it is a sneak attack:
[Sneak attack damage: 1d6 ⇒ 1 ]
Seems that it won't hurt that much.
Kazadarin Darlok |
Kazadarin swings his great sword again at Lamm. " You should have finished me Lamm! I am the debt collector and you are going to pay with your life!"
Power Attack: 1d20 + 4 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 4 + 2 = 24
Damage: 2d6 + 6 + 3 ⇒ (2, 1) + 6 + 3 = 12
GM Aest |
I'll DMPC everyone who hasn't posted by tonight, to keep the game moving.
GM Aest |
DMPCing Aerodus.
Lamm dodges left of Gern's axe-stroke, but positions himself perfectly for Kazaradin's downward slash. His high-pitched scream fills the room and he falls to the floor, bleeding badly. His chest still rises and falls shallowly, but he makes no moves and no sounds.
Aerodus Crossbow: 1d20 ⇒ 11
Damage?: 1d8 ⇒ 1
Another volley of arrows and bolts, these fired from Litsy and Aerodus, splash harmlessly into the water near Gobbleguts. Laijiri's orb joins them, sizzling as it hits the water, and Giorgio's slash fails to cut the crocodile's scaly hide.
1d6 ⇒ 4
Bite: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22
Damage: 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (1) + 4 = 5
Grapple?: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (13) + 10 = 23
The crocodile once again lurches out of the water, this time catching Giorgio's leg between its jaws. Before he has time to utter even a scream, the beast's weight yanks him into the water.
Well, it was going to hit eventually.
Kazadarin Darlok |
Kazadarin looks down at Lamm and spits on his body, the splash of the crocodile dragging Giorgio into the water pulls the young man from his vengeance and he turns, moving toward his companion.
if I can attack with my sword I will, if I have to enter the water I will drop my sword and draw my dagger.
Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9
Damage: great sword - 2d6 + 6 ⇒ (1, 3) + 6 = 10
Damage dagger - 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
GM Aest |
It should be noted that Lamm is currently unconcious and bleeding out. Would you prefer to direct your attack at the crocodile that's eating Giorgio instead?
Giorgio Karakos |
The Church of Sarenrae had trained Giorgio for many things. Getting dragged to watery doom by a crocodile was not one of them. Flailing in the water, the half elf kicked, slashed, beat, did whatever he could to try and free his bleeding leg from the croc's powerful jaws.
CMB to break grapple: 1d20 ⇒ 10
Gern Hammerfold |
Gern heard the cry and the splash as Giorgio was dragged into the water. He moves to the edge of the platform and swings his axe at the creature, hoping to force it to let his companion go before it drags him under water to a horrible death.
Assuming the gator is in range since it can attack us. If not, I'll draw a hand axe and throw it instead.
Attack vs croc. 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 91d10 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8. If not then hand axe instead. Roll is the same but add 2 instead of 4. Damage is 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
Tiny Litsy |
Oh, no!
Shocked, Litsy dropped her shortbow. She grabbed her rapier, and raced to the crocodile.
"LET HIM GO, YOU DAMN MONSTER!"
Not fighting defensively.
Attack: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9 *sigh* Sorry... T.T
Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 4
Laijiri |
While Lamm's life was surely to be ended, Laijiri was rather dismayed that she did not get a chance to Charm him. There were no doubt more secrets that the man knew that they would not find, and were she to have her way, Lamm would be undone. Throwing acid at the reptile was not something that could be done now, and her physical skill was not such that she would feel confident joining in..
Much to her distaste, she decided that her best course of action was to try to keep Lamm alive. Long enough for him to talk, at least. Lip curling, she started to work on his numerous wounds.

Stabilize (Lamm): 1d20 - 8 ⇒ (2) - 8 = -6 Poor Lamm, with his 9 constitution and at -8 HP
Despite Laijiri's efforts, Lamm shudders once and stops breathing. Meanwhile, Gobbleguts continues to savage Giorgio, rolling and twisting in the water. Only Aerodus's bolt manages to find it, sinking deep into its tail.
Bite (Giorgio): 1d6 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Giorgio stops struggling and hangs limply as the reptile bites into his stomach.
By my calculations, that puts Giorgio at -4. If he hits -10, he'll be gone. Stabilization checks are DC10+number of negative hit points, so a DC 14 fort save for him to stabilize, or someone could heal him. I really don't want to kill him...
GM Aest |
Derp. You're right. I read the 5 from last round as a 6 for some reason.
Gern Hammerfold |
Gern swings his axe again, and calls to Laijiri who's near Lamm's body "Push the scunner inter tha drink lass! Mayhap the splash will cause the movin' pair o' boots ter drop Giorgio!"

Tiny Litsy |
Seeing the dwarf attacking the crocodile, Litsy moved immediatly to flank it.
I don't really know if that's needed, but still...

Laijiri |
Gern's words had merit, and there was little that could be done with Lamm's body, so Laijiri heeded them. It was seconds to go through his pockets for any possessions that he may have had on him, setting them to the side if any were found, before she started pushing the body closer and closer to the reptile that currently had Giorgio.
___________________
Check his pockets, then begin pushing it towards the crocodile
GM Aest |
QUickly going through Gaedren's pockets, Laijiri finds only a keyring, Lamm's dagger, and eight hand-crossbow bolts. She pushes the corpse slowly off the platform, soaking herself with water as it falls into the water below. Gern brings his axe down onto Gobbleguts's back, distracting the crocodile long enough for Litsy to slip her rapier into its belly in a sneak attack. Giorgio manages to slow his bleeding down to a trickle, stabilizing.
Now bleeding from several wounds, Gobbleguts shakes Giorgio one last time and releases him before submerging down into the murky water. Giorgio floats to the top near the floor of the fishery's understructure, with Lamm floating face-down on the other side of the water.
Combat Over
Gern Hammerfold |
Dropping his axe to the side, Gern quickly bent and hauled the unconscious man from the water. He rolled him onto his side, trying to bring him back around while eyeing the water for more trouble.
"Priest! I think we need yer God right nooo." he exclaimed.
Aerodus Gaverin |
As Gern brings them out of the water, Aerodus dashes forward.
"Abadar of the First Vault, bless this man with health so he may once more prosper in our city!"
Channel Energy, selecting out Lamm if he'll survive sans healing. Everyone else...: 1d6 ⇒ 5
GM Aest |
With Gern's and Aerodus's help, Giorgio regains consciousness. The three tables across the way are covered with predominantly useless junk, with a small spot cleared off for a meal; it looks like Lamm's last meal was fish wrapped in seaweed. To the southwest, a section of the understructure looks to have been walled off, with a door, slightly ajar, leading into it.
Aerodus Gaverin |
Once certain that Giorgio will be fine, Aerodus rises and approaches Lamm's body. Hauling it out of the water, he glares at the corpse.
"Well, least we can do is report the body to the authorities. He'll get thrown into an unmarked grave face down, as befitting his kind. But it'll be a message to those who feel they can abuse the system and peoples of Korvosa."
Giorgio Karakos |
Giorgio blinks his eyes open, and hacks a bit of water out of his lungs. He looks around, seeing his comrades standing, and gives a wry grin. "Next time," he croaks out, "I need a plan that doesn't involve getting savaged by beasties with great big mouths."
He peers at the open door, then waves Litsy over. "I'd wager that's where Lamm lairs up. Or laired. Either way...he was likely too confident to trap it, but better safe than pincushioned by crossbow bolts."
Kazadarin Darlok |
Kazadarin bends down and picks up Lamm's dagger, absentmindedly turning it over in his hands as he looks at the old mans corpse.
Kazadarin Darlok |
"Sorry, I know everyone wanted to get thier vengence also, I thought he would be tuffer."
Tiny Litsy |
Litsy picked up her shortbow slowly. Very slowly. Her arms were shaking. The blood-tinged water, the crocodile's sudden attack on Giorgio, remembered her that night, on the High Bridge. The night when she became an orphan.
"Drowned", they said. Suicide. Or accident. Nonsense... They were murdered, and that's all.
And she could remember... Nothing. Except her mother's last cry. And the splash.
It had been so brutal.
Unbearable.
I hate water... So freaking much.
"No. We must leave it here," she replied to the cleric. "We have just committed a murder -and a pretty obvious one, even for the guards. If we leave the body here, maybe they'll think that it was a settling of accounts. Besides, I don't think Zellara wants them to know,"[b] she added. [b]"Trust me, Korvosa's justice is corrupted to the core. We would be set to our death."
She nodded at the inquisitor.
"I'll take care of it. Oh, and Giorgio... Nice to see alive. Even with some guts which were a bit gobbled," she said, a bit too enthusiastically, and started to walk to the door. "Playful one. Try not to cuddle with a crocodile, next time! It's terrible for your health! And don't worry Kaz: he was already dead, as soon as we decided to kill him!"
She'll take 10 on trapfinding.
GM Aest |
Litsy doesn't find any traps on the door, but she does notice a smell, somehow fouler than the rotten fish smell earlier that night. Peeking through the partially-open door, she can see a wooden bed with a lumpy mattress, and a small, round table covered with filthy plates, bread-crusts, fruit-skins, and the other detritus of breakfasts past. A wooden strongbox with a padlock sits at the foot of the bed, while a dresser, crammed full of filthy clothes, sits within arms reach, if someone was sleeping there. Atop the dresser sits what appears to be a wooden hatbox covered in flies, and a deck of cards.
Laijiri has the keyring.
As she creaks the door open, everyone hears a strange sound, especially one for the wee hours of the night. BOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooonnnnnnnnnnng! BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnng It's the bells of Pharasma's Grand Cathedral, in the Gray District. They're joined quickly by hte higher, lighter-sounding bells at the Temple of Sarenrae, the deep and rich bells at the Bank of Abadar, and the chimes of the Temple of Shelyn. Even a few tolls of the Temple of Asmodeus's massive iron bell can be heard.
Man, those BOOOOOOOOOOOooooooooooooooooooooonnnnnngs feel weird to write.
Laijiri |
As the fight ended, and Giorgio healed, Laijiri was a bit dazed by the task that they had completed. After pushing Lamm's body into the water, she had fallen back on her heels, lost in thought. She had been in this town for months, let her family go ahead, and made her way using what tricks she had, and now it was over.. Her sister was safe again-- though to be honest, Zavi could have left when she chose-- and they could rejoin their family. The ringing of all of the bells pulled her out of the distant place she had gone to, reflecting on the enormity of it all.
Looking in the directions of the sounds, Laijiri frowned in curiosity. "That is not..", shaking her head, she rose to see what Litsy had found. "That sound concerns me", she said quietly. The keys on the keyring were tried on the locked box as the ringing of the bells continued.

Power was knocked out for most of the day yesterday, sorry.
Rolling to see what is known about all the bells ringing like that:
K.(Local): 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18
GM Aest |
Inside the chest, Laijiri finds the following items, each wrapped in paper and twine (rough appraise values are next to them, because why not?):
A narrow teak cigar-case, inlaid with jade: 25 gp
A gold ingot, two pounds, bearing the coat of arms of Cheliax: 100 gp
A tiny golden crown: 350 gp
A fist-sized scrimshaw carving of a kraken, complete with garnets for eyes: 200 gp
A silver ring, bearing the inscription "for Emmah, the light in my nights: 150 gp
A highly realistic, and scandalous, ivory statuette of two entwined succubi: 450 gp
1 masterwork shuriken
1 adamantine arrowhead
an abalone-shell holy symbol of Shelyn: 300 gp
One vial of oil of keen edge
A wand, with an obsidian point on its tip
A vial containing a dost of silversheen
A beautifully-bejewelled brooch with a broken clasp.
Even to the untrained eye, the brooch looks incredibly valuable.
Tiny Litsy |
When the bells rang, Litsy raised worried eyes.
"It doesn't please me neither," she said softly. "It seems like it is some kind of alarm... We have to hurry up."
However, her anxiety disappeared faster than snow in the sun when she saw the precious items inside the chest:
"My, my, look at that," whistled the young girl. Guys, we just became rich!"
She picked up the brooch, admiring its polished jewels.
"Who wants what? My... It's fantastic! It looks like a pirate's treasure! I've always dreamt about finding one!!! My life is now complete!!"
Appraise: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24
Giorgio Karakos |
Giorgio uses his scimitar to help prop himself up, and limps on over to Lamm's room. While he mutters a quick spell to help look the place over, he tries to remember what he knows about the bells of Korvosa.
Casting sift to search the room in a single round, and also doing the knowledge thing. Sift examines the area as though searching for fine details, but faster and at range.
Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19
Knowledge:local: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
GM Aest |
Perception: The cards sitting on the dresser next to the hatbox seem somehow...familiar, as if you've seen them before. Richly decorated, with the images of the Harrow drawn masterfully on them. The hatbox, which is covered in flies, has a little clasp that keeps it shut, but no lock.
Knowledge Check: There are only a few times that the bells all right together. The most well-known is the king's birthday, but that was two months ago. They're also rung in times of warfare and city-wide tragedy, as well as for a few multi-deity holidays. Aside from these events, each bell has a certain number of hours it's sounded before passing off the duty to the next temple. Korvosa is orderly like that.
Appraise: The brooch must be worth at least a thousand gold coins, and perhaps more with the right buyer.
On closer inspection, the circular gold brooch depicts a pseudodragon and an imp coiled around each other in an almost yin-yang pattern. The pseudodragon’s eye is an amethyst, while the imp’s eye is an emerald.
GM Aest |
And a couple more spoilers!
Aerodus Gaverin |
"Those bells... Something is amiss..." Heeding Litsy's statement Aerodus glares down at Lamm and then walks to see what she had found.
"Let's see here... Oh my, this is a small fortune. I think, for the sake of the temple, I'll take the Shelyn stmbol to give to their temple. The rest you all may divide as you see fit. And might I suggest that you take the money and open accounts at the Bank? I can speak with my superiors to see if I can't net you an income of 3% interest on any you turn in per year. Great way to invest!"
Aerodus's banker side is showing...
Giorgio Karakos |
Heal: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
Giorgio takes a quick glance around the room, and stalks right over to the hatbox. Waving the flies away with his shield, he pops the top off...and his eyes widen, even as he clamps his lips together.
"Everyone...I found something that raises more questions than it answers..."
He delicately scoops Zellara's rotting head out of the hatbox, cradling it in his right arm.
"She's been like this for...weeks, at least. And this is definitely her Harrow deck, here. The bells make me think the city's in crisis, but...this is definitely too odd to ignore." He glances down, meeting Zellara's dead gaze. "I wish you could still answer some questions for us."
GM Aest |
I'm refreshing like, every 15 seconds.
EDIT: Giorgio opened the box!
Edit Edit Edit:
Zellara looks at the coins forlornly before fixing a long stare on Litsy. "I thank you for the coins, but the only payment I need is Lamm's death. There is enough to eat and drink here, and the children will not go hungry while I live. Please, return to your friends and finish the task."
Laijiri |
There was a lot of miscellaneous things in the locked box that seemed valuable. Curious as ever, Laijiri felt out the magic for the wand, wondering what it might be a wand of. Absently, she spoke as she continued discerning. "Litsy is right. all the bells ringing are trouble." She was trying to not make a face at the smell that was overpowering the smell of fish, but had not looked in that direction yet. She could not help but notice the cards, however. "Let's take these things and go. We can examine the rest later."
Giorgio scooping the head out of the hatbox made her pause. His question brought a small smile to her lips, though. "If that is her head, but we spoke to her spirit, then it is possible that some part of her may be retained in her cards. I can find answers in those."
