Half-Orc Barbarian 1

Welcome one and all, the purpose of this thread is so that we can establish our characters / squad make-up and get a head-start on roleplay. That will let us hit the ground running once Pentor gets us fired up.

Our Corporal is Red River Running a Human Barbarian

Squad mates as follows:
Me’mori – Counterspell Wisard “Veto” or Fighter “Hal”
Black Dow – Cavalier/Fighter
Mark Sweetman – Krathok/Half-orc Ranger
Drayen – Cavalier/Fighter
Jaycen Keenword -?
Terok – Ranger or Druid
Kozaric – Thief Scout or Cavalier or Fighter

As a start I think we should get the following down:
1) Character built up in profile - Pentor has pretty much ok'ed PFS rules as a starter, though you should get DM fiat on any specifics.
2) Squad role
3) Are you a recent hire, or have you been in the squad a while
4) Put down some roleplay fluff that your squadmates will know about your character, so that we can act like a unit once we go operational

Don't mind me just lurking.;)

Werehare Inquisitive 3/ Seeker 3/ Bard 3

Lionsmane has given the green light 25pt buy, so I'll get started on the Wizard.

Declan

I'll be working on it intermittently until it's done. Any ideas on a squad name?

Dotting.

What firm classes do we have?

Half-Orc Barbarian 1

Krathok is a Half-Orc Ranger and I think Memori has firmed up the Wizard angle as well?

One other point I've found useful is posting timezones, just so that we know roughly when squaddies are able to post. I'm a GMT+8 in Malaysia, can get access at work - plus post once the young-un is in bed.

As far as my squad role - Krathok is an advance scout / shock trooper / hand-axe choppin force of nature. Will have limited range capacity as he prefers getting up close and personal. Have tracking skills and scent feat, so I can serve as our tracker as well.

Roleplay wise - Krathok has been in the squad a while, Red River Running being the one that found him after he escaped from being an Orc slave in Belkzen. He sees Red River as the alpha male giving him full deference, and treats the rest of the squad as a Band of Brothers.

Krathok is definately more orcish in customs, not shy of cannibalism and taking of fetishistic trophies from worthy / hated enemies (around his neck hangs the ear of the orc that took his eye, and the jerkied tongue of a wolf he killed). His deity is 'The Despoiler' (god of lust, pillage and plunder) from the Orcish pantheon.

Also - Pentor has asked where we want to be based? I'm happy with anywhere, though preferably in the northern part of Golarion. Anyone have any strong preference?

Werehare Inquisitive 3/ Seeker 3/ Bard 3

Yup. I've got the Wizard angle covered, though as a Counterspeller, he'll be more "inhibition" than "exhibition", I think. We'll see how it works out. I'm... GMT -5 (EST).

I don't know how the squads got sorted, but anywhere not Ustlav is fine. I had said Isger earlier, and my character's from Druma, but I can work with anything. Isger is a little less central than Ustalav, but I have no desire to frequent the Worldwound or Numeria.

I must say, it would be neat to have a trio (or more)of Cavaliers. As for names I'm pretty sure the Iron Carnival got used. Hrm, working with the theme..

Steel Horsemen
Sevenfold's Ante
Upstart's Cavalry
The Jackdaws
The Falling Leaves
The Fading Light
The Sunsetriders
Warden's Wanderers

If those don't work, we'll figure it out as the group develops.

Half-Orc Barbarian 1

I noticed that Jaycen posted on the main OOC muster as a Halfling Rogue (Sniper).

As far as location - how does Molthune sound?

Next door to Isger, Cheliax and Druma, and only a bit south of Lastwall / Belkzen. The ruling class in Molthune is a military oligarchy, and their description in the Inner Sea Guide suggests that they'd be the sort to hire mercs. Close to Nirmathas as well, which sounds rife with war.

Pvt. Flynn is a halfling rogue with the swift as shadows racial variant and the scout/sniper archetypes. He will eventually pick up firearm use if allowed and pretty much go the route of sharpshooter for the squad although I'm sure I'll not be the only ranged combatant.

Roleplay wise - Talbot is a talkative jokester at heart, and can often be seen trying to make new acquaintances. His life as a slave in Cheliax has taught him that one can not have too many friends, and that true friends are worth more than any material gain. Because of his former life in captivity he already feels some kinship with Krathok, albeit his orcish ways, due to the half-orc's past as a slave.

Location - I've said it twice, I'll say it again Isger is where all the Sh!t is going down. Mercenary League, Eagle Knights, Hellknights and even Sisterhood of the Golden Erinyes. What more could you ask for a mercenary campaign?

Timezone - I'm in St. Louis, MO (Midwest U.S.) whatever that translates into GMT wise.

Dark Archive

Wow! Seeing a theme here. Waiting on a reply from Black Dow, but right now I am looking at Magus. Will have more details later today.

I am also for Isger. It is the middle of everywhere.

I am in Dallas/Ft. Worth, CDT (which it also is in MO). That should currently be GMT -5. I can access from work and I work graveyard so that puts me most active from GMT 4 AM to 12:30 PM (11 PM to 7:30 AM CDT)

@Me'mori - We're on daylight savings time now. You are now GMT -4 (Britain now being GMT +1 as they are also on daylight savings time)

As for possible names, here are a few suggestions:

Broken Chains
Chain Gang
Gnome Liberation Front
Death at Breakfast
Breakfast Before Death
and the ever popular... Four Funerals at a Wedding

"Bear" checking in, he will be more of an upfront fighter, support caster. Still need to complete all of the details but some basics are there.
Background:
Bear
Bear is a reminant of an old age, one were barbarian warriors were endowed with the powers of their totems. Strong is the blood from that line in Bear. Bear's barbarian tribe was wiped out by the Chelaxian's in Isger. He was picked up by a women who was a camp follower to the mercenary band. Bear was adopted by her and has spent his whole life around mercenary bands.
Knowing nothing about his true background he eventually joined a mercenary band himself. He is a little slow, but loyal. He is probably the hairiest person you will meet outside of a bugbear. He know little of his powers other than he can cast a few spells. His shapechanging powers will come as quite a surprise to him when it does come.

EDIT: I might do one or two levels of Barbarian as well.

Central Time zone here, in west Florida.
I like Isger, for starting myself.

I think we'll actually have at least a 5 man forward detachment. Waiting for final approval, but I believe that Black Dow and I will be up this afternoon.

By the way, Bear, I love you! Here is the character that I play with Black Dow in our other pbp: Björn Helsingrsøn

Hi Folks

Here's my half of Drayen's aforementioned duo, a major departure from my original concepts, but there seemed to be a ton of crossbowmen and cavaliers being mooted.

Already know we've got a rogue [and a halfling to boot] but hopefully you'll find Ábítan suitable to the pallate ;)

Squad Role: Butcher of foes, cookie and black ops
Recent hire along with Drayen's warped fellow halfling
Character fluff: apart from his backstory working on that... will refer to everyone [friend/foe as types/cuts of meat]... he ain't all there...

If there's too much Rogue overkill I can re-boot as he's just a concept at the present... had considered Barbarian but am open to suggestions as I'm just happy to fill unit roles [bacon roll, sausage roll... ]

Half-Orc Barbarian 1

More Rogues the better!

Remember we are part of a larger company, so an excess of stealth just means that we get to do more Black Ops / Dirty Work.... and by the look of Abitan and Hakon (combined with the rest of us) I think we are well on our way!!!

So that gives us:
Krathok - Half-Orc Guide Ranger
Talbot Flynn - Halfling Scout / Sniper Rogue
Abitan Haeftince - Halfling Poisoner Rogue
Hakon - Halfling Hexcrafter Magus
Bear - Human Bear-Shaman Druid
Declan - Human Counterspelling Wizard
Kozaric's - Rogue / Cavalier

and led into battle by a Barbarian! This sounds like all kinds of fun.

Abitan - BTW, Dibbets says Hi :P

Male Halfling Magus (Hexcrafter)/1

Here is the aforementioned warped fellow halfling.

I promise to always have a smile ready for everyone...

Squad Role: Misfortune, uberbrewmeister and never, ever, a clown
Character Fluff: Background is still a rough draft, but he is basically a wide eyed innocent for whom things never seem to go his way.

A halfling jinxer hexcrafting magus. Some melee, some ranged, some magic, some curses, all adding up to bursting coin purses.

I now only have 8 more posts to get in a nickname so help a brother out people. =D

Hahah. Dibbs me old shipmate lol

Man have some great fellow players in other pbp here with me - yourself and Drayen... looking forward to making a few other aquaintances here as well.

Our squad is definately shaping up to be the black ops, nasty basterds lol...

Squad 2 shaping up as a solid combat unit, but a pretty honest one
Squad 3 still shaping up...

Red River Running: "Each and every man under my command owes me one hundred enemy scalps. And I want my scalps. And all y'all will git me one hundred scalps, taken from the heads of one hundred dead enemies. Or you will die tryin."

My tip of the coin for the squad name:

Black Hearted Bastards

Hakon's nickname: Bloody Jest

Half-Orc Barbarian 1

@ Hakon - one of the first things that came to mind was 'Glasgow'; though that probably wouldn't work. I like the sound of 'Cheerful' or 'Grimace'.

@ Abitan - aye, was hoping I'd end up as your squaddie :)

I'll throw Krathok's nickname open for popular suggestion as well :)

Based on popular vote - I think that we can make Isger a lock as the starting base of operations. Now we just need a name...

We could use another up front fighter, having the Druid as the only main up fronty could make Bear very grumpy...you won't like him when he is grumpy...

Bear's favorite sayings:

"Piss off you stupid haggis!"
"Does "Bear" s+@% in the woods?"
"I'd kill 3 score of dragons for another ale!"
"I love it when a skull makes that crunchy noise!"

Bear is near Neutral Evil, other than his fellow soldiers he doesn't care much about the sanctity of life. Looking forward to not playing the nice guy for once!

Kozaric here as a Ranger Skirmisher. (work in progress0
I figure this to be a better fit for us as a sneaky bunch.

I can reconfigure to a fighter type with limited stealth if needed.

@Bear: Don't worry about the sanctity of life man, we've two near NE halfling psychos in the squad, not to mention a cannibalistic half orc ranger lol

@Krathok: nickname... "War Pig"??? ;)

Doing a quite Squad compare think we are definately the nastiest in disposition!

Indeed. I'm going to have to rethink Declan's temperament to keep going in the squad.

You could be the one sane one in the group, always steering us in the right direction through deft manipulation.

Our squad leader is a Barbarian, we are going to need some kind of brain power or we will be dead part way through our first job...I just imagine it now, we see the Castle, our leader yells charge! Do we question his orders...probably not, the lust for blood too high for us to think straight...or the others sneak in, slit all of their throats, including the princess we were supposed to rescue, "We ad to be sure she wasn't wid them you see..."
lol's

Answer to 1st post:
3) Are you a recent hire, or have you been in the squad a while
4) Put down some roleplay fluff that your squadmates will know about your character, so that we can act like a unit once we go operational

He has been with the squad for a time, although he missed the last major action. He is simple, you usually tell him what to do until combat starts. You thought him a big brute, maybe a Barbarian until you saw that he coul cast spells!

You think you hear him mumbling some words of power but he seems to yell out three things you have seen him use:
"Make me big!" and he grows to about 12 feet tall.
"Make club big! the club he uses to batter opponents glows and has easily crushed the skulls of several opponents.
"Bushes grab enemies!" you have seen the very ground itself grow around some Goblins you were fighting and hold them fast so you could easily finish them.

Other than that you have seen him scribbling some things on the skins of some of those that we have defeated. He has told you that things talk to him in his head and tell him to write these things down, although you are not sure if he can even read...no one as of yet has asked him to stop skinning your foes, it seems the enemies around you have started to hear about your eccentric group, taking trophies and skinning your enemies, you worry it might restrict who will hire you...

Half-Orc Barbarian 1

@ Bear - Krathok is a teetotaller, so 'Ten Cups' won't work :)

@ Abitan - 'War Pig' is possible, been thinking of 'Fetish' as well in reference to the 'souveniers'.... I mean he doesn't carry around a waterproof bag full of salt for nothing...

Krathok refers to the halflings as children due to their size and relative lack of strength. The term is partially condescending, though he has seen that they can all hold a weapon the right way around and are ruthless in battle - which he does respect.

Bear and Malnivar are seen as equals due to their strength matching his own, although I'm assuming they've come to blows in the past. Bareknuckle boxing / no-rules wrestling to submission being the preferred conflict resolution in the squad.

Krathok sees Declan with disdain, not seeing the worth of having someone so weak in the squad (especially given that his magic isn't flashy and destructive). However Red River has forced him to swear a blood oath to look after Declan, which Krathok takes very seriously.

"Little child, bring me more of your jerky."

As for squad name: Black Hearted Bastards or Broken Chains are the ones that stood out for me.

Werehare Inquisitive 3/ Seeker 3/ Bard 3

Lesee.. Declan's temperament will definitely be that of the blasé type, deadpan through most of his interactions, since several of the squad are the type that would get antsy without regular action, and the other type would just disdain him because what he does, they can't see. So he would play towards that off-balancing sort of attitude, never really sure if he was so callous as to be uncaring, or something else. The only time they've really seen him grinning and engaged is when he working, and then he's grinning like a loon, taunting and jeering at the enemy.

He's a fairly recent hire, having come from the direction of Druma with a disdain for marketplaces, and a liking for sweets.

BACKGROUND
--------------------
“Yeah, I was part of the Eagle Knights. Was a good gig. Great friends, good pay, and easy duty for the most part.
“So why am I hear with you misfits? Well…see what happened was not really my fault, least not if you ask me.
See I was part of an advance scout company. We would head out way before the main body, scaring up any opposition, maybe making long range strikes against the enemy, that sorta thing. Hells, might be why I’m with you knuckle heads, maybe teach you a thing or too.
Well we got a new squad leader. An up and coming officer, the son of some big wig or another. They was sending him around to all the platoons so he could learn all about warfare. Hells, if you ask me that’s a sure way to teach a man enough to be dangerous. Hells that’s just what became of it.
So there I was, LT leading us on a long-range patrol to weed out some of the gobos, when he decided to crank it up a notch and make a name for him self. Lead us right into the middle of ‘em he did trying to kill some chieftain he heard about. “ Darlock pauses for a moment lost in thought and puts in a chew then spits a long sting of brown-black tobacco into the fire where it sizzles from the heat.
“Of the 16 of us that went in, 3 of us made it out; me, the LT, and SGT Neddle. Sgt Neddle pretty damn near pulled both me and LT both out of that hellhole, saved our lives he did.
He got us back to camp 3 days later. Us all looking like something a dog coughed up. Then LT made his report. Sum’b!~+& put all the blame on old Sgt Neddle. ‘Said Sarge led the attack against his orders. Said he pulled us out! Believe that? So quick fast and in a hurry, ol’ Sgt Neddle gets about 4 inches taller do to a neck streatchin.
Well, 3 days later, I wake up in the medic tent and hear what happened. Hell I couldn’t let it go, could you? So I do the only thing I can think of. I make that bastage dead and head for the hills. Figure if the Eagle Knight ever catch me I’ll grow real quick like good ‘ol Sarge. Run into this here Merc Company two months ago and figure what the heck, might as well stick with what I know.”
Darlock spits another stream into the fire and gives a lopsided grin, “Wish I could bring that LT back though, and kill his arse again.”

Some things I noticed which I hope pointing out helps:

@ Bear - Both of your traits are from the same category. Hmmm... I wonder if honeybadgers count as ursine?

@ Malnivar - You only have one trait.

@ Krathok - You only spent 64.1 gp.

@ Me'mori - Declan could be like the young nobleman leiutenant who is assigned to the protagonist company in the Malazan books; a fish out of water. Makes a great counterpoint to the rest of the squad.

@ Talbot - Are we using Hero Points? If so, I think a new squad nickname just suggested itself: Anti-heroes

@ Albitan - What about "Chef" or "Chuckwagon" (for the little bone pushcart you have that we fashioned from all that was left of our old squadmate, Charles)?

@ Hakon - Now I'm thinking that if Black Dow likes the pushcart idea, we need to have a cage built into it to hold our honeybadger.

I got armor, two axes and my pig-sticker... all I need for a happy-fun time :) I'll save up the rest for laters. ... just occurred you may be referring to the total $$ spent. Will double check it later.

I don't think we are using Hero Points (as far as I know) - I think the presence in Talbot's profile is a hold-over from whatever he used the profile for last.

Forgot to dot this. Also want to say I love the (extremely creepy) vibe you guys have going with this squad. Keep it up, even if Cortland ends up avoiding all of you within base camp. I imagine the legend of [insert squad name here, likely Broken Chains] will be quite the story indeed.

I had to boggle at "Olympic Pole Sheep"
"Scorpion Stingers"

Olympic Pole Sheep, hands down. Come to think of it, Black Dow, isn't that what you call strippers there in Scotland? =P

Hahaha. Only the expensive ones... the rest are just "Mutton maids"...

Bonecart portable butchery (read:torture) table... oh yes please...

Am considering shifting Abitan's belief from Nixx to also Blackfingers [for the poison) and Father Skinsaw... thoughts guys [a little too extreme having a halfling serial killer in the ranks?]

Perhaps Abitan sees Blackfingers as revering his mother and Da Skinsaw for his father...

Might end up multi-classing in Cleric as Abitan takes his faith literally...heheheh?

@Bear: "Make club big!" - nearly spat my coffee there... think Bear's club is big enough (well to the little fellas anyway!)

@Krathok: What about "Trophy" as his nick-name?

'Trophy' sounds like a good nick to me. Of course it'll be you boys using it, so feel free to call me 'Shirley' if you like.... as long as you're out of earshot.

@Abitan - I thought the Welsh were the ones with the sheep fetish? And be as extreme as you dare to be.

We should nail the squad name in the next 24hrs so that Pentor can use it for the IC thread title.

Talbot - do you have a name preference?

Nixx sounds a plan then - multiclassing and general psycho mayhem down the line...

Honey badgers are totally kicka$$! However my little bone cartie is likely to be pulverised in seconds, surely just having him lope along -Squad mascot like is a good call?

@ Krathok: Yes the Welsh are known for it, but up here in the NE of Scotia we've an [undue] reputation for lovin the mutton a little too much... [so much so that the city's soccer team is nicknamed "The Sheep Shaggers!] I rest my case.

Soo.. We talk general tactics yet?

Declan isn't adverse to melee, but he'd certainly be flanking when he does. Provided the rest of the squad can make a hole to the spellcaster, he can shut them down, though at this level, he can't really counter much that couldn't be countered with steel.

The fun comes later when they start trying to summon, or Fireball, or Charm, or SLA and he's close enough to touch.

"Soot Saints", "Steel Vespers"? I actually like "The Crimson Kings" though.

Conveniently "prettified" by a crown, with a flurry of red rose petals beneath it, all upon a black background. Only the squad and company know what the banner is really supposed to look like.

To your point of tactics and flanking... I posted the following on the main OOC thread but wanted to post it here too in an effort to build some groundswell support.

Drayen wrote:

I wanted to post a query to all of the squads and our illustrious captain. I noticed one of our squadmembers had hero points listed in their stat block. That made me think, "But we're anti-heroes". Of course, that thought came from the Black Company and Malazan protagonists all being anti-heroes. These groups being the inspiration for this game made me wonder if maybe there wasn't something there for us.
Originally, in the recruitment thread, a suggestion was made to have our characters make use of teamwork feats. It seemed many people echoed that sentiment there. Since the Hero Point system includes the "Anti-hero" and simply gives them a free feat in lieu of hero points, I thought it could be a good addition so long as the feats were required to be Teamwork Feats. This keeps the anti-hero vibe and promotes teamwork and company/squad/character bonding.
Thoughts?

I had already gone with anti-hero before posting this and took "Outflank" as a teamwork feat, since we have no less than 2 rogues.

Back to squad tactics. It seems that Bear, Krathok and Malnivar are the primary front line fighters while Declan is primary magic-user; Abitan and Talbot are the flankers and ranged whereas Hakon flits between all of the roles. Our only two non-stealthers are Bear and Declan (and I suppose Red River Running), so we're pretty sneaky.

I highly recommend the squad learn and implement flanking at all times of melee fighting. Flank = +1d6 damage per hit for your allies. Everyone should also have a ranged weapon, especially since we have 2 people who can sneak attack at range. It doesn't need to be a longbow, but it should have at least a 30' range increment.

Dark Archive

Okay, to aid in getting a squad name chosen, here are the suggestions thus far in order of posting:

1. Olympic Pole Sheep
2. Olympic Pole Sheep
3. Olympic Pole Sheep
4. Steel Horsemen
5. Sevenfold's Ante
6. Upstart's Cavalry
7. The Jackdaws
8. The Falling Leaves
9. The Fading Light
10. The Sunsetriders
11. Warden's Wanderers
12. Broken Chains
13. Chain Gang
14. Gnome Liberation Front
15. Death at Breakfast
16. Breakfast Before Death
17. Four Funerals at a Wedding
18. Black Hearted Bastards
19. Anti-heroes
20. Crimson Kings
21. Olympic Pole Sheep
22. Scorpion Stingers
23. Grey Executioners
24. Eaters of Mutton Maids (let's be honest, no one in this squad is getting anywhere near first rate whores)
25. Honeybadgers (since we already have the mascot and all)
26. Soot Saints
27. Steel Vespers

Hey Zeus! That is a crazy long list.

Well, who's for what?

Agree on the tactics - Abitan will probably take "Outflank" as well...

Bear in mind that down the line Little Bitter will be envenoming our weapons, so we'll have another edge...

Flanking as much as possible is a must... if the rolls are with us we can buzzsaw [Skinsaw??] through foes - drop em fast and move on

Liking the banner - think the King figure should have his arms bound to his sides by chains though... or in additon to the missing eyes he should also gutted and holding his own entrails ;)

Bear votes:

I like idea of being King, I like crimson too, pretty color, remind me of blood...

Once I can shapeshift bear will make an excellent scount as well being able to fly and such...

+1 to the gutted and holding entrails... gives us a nice lead in to how we leave those that really piss us off.

So that's Declan, Bear and Krathok for "The Crimson Kings" - and was that a vote from Abitan as well?
