Hooked Horseman of Magnimar Escapes!
While being transported from Magnimar to Habe's Sanatorium, Trevol Greenway, known as the Hooked Horror of Magnimar for riding down his victims with an ogre hook and then hanging them like meat, is believed to have escaped when his wagon was assaulted by the goblins along the Brinestump Marshes. His body was not found amongst the dead. Authorities seek assistance in finding the fugitive. For details, speak to Sheriff Hemlock. Only the brave need apply.

Since the crocodile is unconscious at the moment, do you guys wish to high tail it out of there or is Lars going to try to circle back so that you can finish it off?

"Hurry up? Then you try!" Despite his complaint Lars redoubles his efforts efforts to move the raft faster while steering it safely.

Lars churns up a charcoal wake as he pulls the raft forward with urgency. Sweat pools on Lars' face and clothes. Each stroke visibly grows in weight as the pole accumulates mud and vegetation. Or maybe it's the loss of range of motion as his muscles contract and refuse to loosen up under their burning use?

Finally the raft hits a drift as Lars is unable to row no further. Blisters have painfully formed on at several spots on his hands.

The party can take actions to heal up now...

Cursing as he wipes away his sweat, Lars sits on the raft with the oar on his legs. "I've got a wild and crazy idea. How about someone else take a turn at this?"

Morthak continues to watch the waterway for any indication of another raft.

"Easy," he says to Lars. "Let the current do the work."

Morthak is willing to help operate the raft but poling a raft is probably strength checks, which he isn't much good at. If there is a way he can aid another, he will try that.

He looks over as Lars rubs his blistered hands.

"Let me see."

If the blisters have a similar effect to hands that caltrops have on feet, I could try to make a heal check at DC 15. Or he can treat deadly wounds to restore 1 hit point at a DC 20. Whatever applies...

Party Sur: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17

For Ourias:

Since the swamp, you've noticed a sense of desolation or inner isolation. The comforting strength of Abadar's presence that you've grown accustom to since your childhood seems gone; like you've returned to being that child alone in the woods.

For Samantha:

The bleakness of the Brinestump Swamp has left plenty of time for your own thoughts. Somehow under the stirring clouds and the shadows of cypress trees, you feel disconnected and alone. Isolated from your heritage, you realize for the first time that there's always been this connection, this inner desire to do good. But here, it's gone; and what a sharp contrast the world is without it.

Feel free to continue dialog or take actions. I'm just going to speed things up a bit and move to Day 2 based on some rolls, and assuming the party stopped and made camp for the night. With the moon obscured by the clouds, it's way too dangerous to travel at night, even with a torch.

The cold, damp ground leaves little for comfort, and its difficult to sleep for more than an hour without waking to some inconvenience of the swamp: the stinging bugs, the humidity, water seeping in from the ground to your clothes. Morning returns but only to offer the grim reminder that you remain, and with every glance the edges of the world appear to creep in. Even the stains of the river appears alive and slowly pulsing under the pristine surface of the stagnant water, like fish under an frozen lake. Solemnly the group moves on.

The raft slips through a tangle of tall reeds growing up from beneath the black, murky water. The fog has dissipated, but the surroundings are still gloomy. Overhead, branches entwine to form a dense canopy. The sounds of the swamp are louder now, and they echo through the trees. Unseen creatures slide through the reeds below the water’s surface. A chorus of croaks and ribbits begins, as if to greet you, growing so loud that every other sound is drowned out by their raucous song. Then, all at once, the chorus stops.

I miss the desert; this place is so damp. It's not fit for people to live here.

Having trouble getting to sleep, Morthak casts bones for a while. Though he sees little in the patterns of the bones, the ritual helps settle him down. Eventually he crawls into his bedroll and goes to sleep.

I assume we are staying awake in watches. Morthak has no preference for which watch he takes.

The adventure feels like we are on autopilot for now so Morthak will go with the flow.

That night, Samantha is quieter than usual and keeps her threadbare red scarf up around her neck and the lower half of her face. She seems bothered. She drinks some water and has a bite of bread before turning in for the night. "I'll take third shift." she says dully.

The adventure feels like we are on autopilot for now so Morthak will go with the flow.

This chapter is event based, which works fine for real time gaming but for Pbp, I didn't want to leave longs spurts of uncertainty. Thus, I want to leave windows of opportunity for role-play/actions as the party sees fit, but also make it clear when the next event happens. I didn't want to waste a ton of back and forth time in the posts for survival roles or questioning which direction the party takes.

*Let me know when the party wants to wrap up the current dialogue and move onto the event above. It's not my intent to hinder this...

Ourias notices the quiet and is bothered by the cold and the damp. As he sets up his bed roll to sleep for the evening, he kneels beside it in silent prayer.

Abadar, Judge of Gods and Men, I feel so vulnerable away from your walls. Grant me and my companions the strength and endurance to see justice served.

When he finishes praying he feels the comforting healing coming from Sam. "Thank you, I feel that soothed more than just my flesh," He smiles at her. He the follows the sound advice of Lars and lays down.

Yuuuck... theses tongues seems disgusting!

Music To Play By

Morthak hops into the water from behind with a sploosh as Atsushia begins to chant arcane jargon. The raft continues to move forward, but quickly loses momentum as it decelerates trudging through the reeds.

One giant frog leaps out of the western reeds and lands on the raft in front of Morthak.

acrobatics: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (14) + 8 = 22

I'll give an AoO for Morthak at a -4 for being in the water at that level. Re-reading, I don't believe Morthak threatens with a dagger in his mouth, but will get the sneak attack when he shifts next round.

Eyeing the other halfling as a sizable meal, it attempts to bite Atsushia.
bite: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13
damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
grab: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24

damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5
grab: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26

But can't maintain a grip on his armor, but the crushing power is definitely felt through it.

The 3rd frog surfaces just enough to make a tongue attack at Sam:

bite: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20
grab: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15

Sam now has the grappled condition.

Morthak has two daggers; one in his mouth and one in his right hand. His left hand is holding onto the edge of the boat. However, I would assume there is some penalty for being in the water. Also, you didn't answer my question of how deep the water is (i.e. can I stand on the bottom or not)? This may affect how easy it is to hit (i.e. whether I need a swim check or not).

I'm going ahead with the AoO using the dagger in my right hand - if you still feel that I shouldn't get it just ignore it.

Morthak blinks in surprise as the frog lands on the boat right in front of him. He pulls himself out of the water and thrusts with his dagger.

Must make a swim check to see if I am off-balance (assuming the water is too deep to stand). I assume it is calm water so DC 10:
swim: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10 :) Should be no penalty for being in the water while attacking with a piercing weapon.

I'm guessing froggie is flat-footed after that stealth roll. But I am also flanking, so I get sneak attack either way.
AoO attack, +2 flank, -4 something (high ground?): 1d20 + 5 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (14) + 5 + 2 - 4 = 17
AoO damage, +1 whetstone, +1d8 sneak: 1d3 - 1 + 1 + 1d8 ⇒ (2) - 1 + 1 + (7) = 9

After striking Morthak falls down into the water again. Only the top of his head sticks out of the water.

Holding breath for now.

My actual round 2 action:

Morthak shifts over to his right, pushing against the boat with his left hand.

swim: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
Unless my swim check from before counts for the whole round? :D

Otherwise I am now off balance which means I lose my DEX bonus to AC and enemies have a +2 to hit me on top of that. However I should also have improved cover from the frog on the boat for being partly submerged, which is a +8 to AC. So that's 17-4+8 or 21 AC right now and enemies also get a +2 to hit me. Or you could call it AC 19.

Moving 5' right to flank with Lars. I assume I can still move as I am pushing against the boat with my hand, but since I can't 5' step in the water, the Frog should now get an AoO on me.

Assuming I am still alive after that...

By now, figuring he has got the frog's attention, Morthak lunges out of the water again, his dagger flashing at the frog's face, trying to distract it.

"Lars! Over here!" he shouts.

Not attacking this time - instead I am aiding Lars on his next attack on this frog (hopefully next round unless it is already dead).

Aid Another +2 flank -2 off-balance -4 something: 1d20 + 5 + 2 - 2 - 4 ⇒ (8) + 5 + 2 - 2 - 4 = 9
Dang, needed a 10. Unless the one swim check I first made counts for the whole round. If it does not only are we flanking but he gets an extra +4 to hit.

Ourias impales the over-sized amphibian in front of him, his sword making a clean exit on the frog's backside, but the rotund thing keeps pressing forward.

I'll be generous and give Morthak the AoO. It's questionable if he broke LoS from it to attempt to re-stealth in combat, but the play visually interesting, so we'll go with it. Although no, you're not able to touch the bottom. 6' depth + ~1' of silt at the bottom.

Morthak makes a horizontal swipe just above the raft's plane and it slices deep against the frog's belly. Muscle and sinew pulse behind the leathery flap of skin. But before Morthak can bask in his hit, he feels his legs get tangled up in the depths beneath him and pulling his head under as he's forced to taste the mud-tinged colloidal suspension of filth.

Revising, this is the same frog that's grappling Atsushia. Good thing for Morthak since that was a hit ;)

I did some digging and here is the thread that I'm going to use as a reference. Unfortunately it looks like 2 separate rolls - one triggered at the time of damage, and one at the start of your turn to attempt to complete the spell, which happens to be in the grappled state. Also, since sleep is v,s,m, I believe it fails since you can't cast spells with s while grappled.

However, that would mean that Atsushia can still take a round 2 action.

The last of the three swims forward and attempts to bite Sam:

bite: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
grab: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13

But the constant rocking of the raft prevents it from honing in.

However I should also have improved cover from the frog on the boat for being partly submerged, which is a +8 to AC

Is this referring to a keyworded submerged? Which book is this in?

Sam's song begins; please announce if you plan on accepting the song on your turn.
