Here's another map of Darkmoon Vale showing Elara's Halfway House:

Here

Everyone who knows about Elara's Halfway House would know where it is at least roughly.

Male Human Ranger/3 | SPD 20ft/30ft combat | Init: +2 | Per: +12 | HP 18/23 | AC:17 T:13 FF:14 | CMB +6 +2w/Deft M CMD 17 | Status:Injured, -2 Dex -1 AC -1 CMD

Albus is now updated, may add a comment or two but nothing rules-wise.

Female Human Occultist Arcanist 3 | HP 17/17 | AC 15 Touch 11 Flat-Footed 14 | CMB -1 CMD 10 | Saves: Fort +2 Ref +3 Will +4 | Perception: +2 | Init: +1 | Status: Normal | Spell Effects: Mage Armor (3 hours)

@Javell Just trying to play out Aelerie's misconception/wariness of Javell, coupled with the fact that she's uncomfortable with a knife-loving drifter being around the kids but generally too polite to come right out and say it. She'll warm up pretty soon, though.

Of course, if that sort of RP isn't your cup of tea, please let me know, and Aelerie'll warm up much sooner. =)

Male Human Warpriest of Desna 3 HP 21/24; AC 18/12/16; Saves +6/+3/+8; +7 Per, +4 Init; 0/4 Blessing, 1/6 Fervor

Nah, it's fine. I kind of figured this would happen with a Charisma of 8. Javell has a well-earned reputation for being a bit gruff. It's kind of fun.

Javell can you add a status line to your character alias like the other players have?

Male Human Warpriest of Desna 3 HP 21/24; AC 18/12/16; Saves +6/+3/+8; +7 Per, +4 Init; 0/4 Blessing, 1/6 Fervor

Yeah, sure. Sorry. Wednesdays are hard; I'll post this evening.

Well that was a silly mistake on my part :|

Male Human Warpriest of Desna 3 HP 21/24; AC 18/12/16; Saves +6/+3/+8; +7 Per, +4 Init; 0/4 Blessing, 1/6 Fervor

You're talking to the guy who forgot Point Blank Shot on a ranged/melee character. We all do it.

Female Human Occultist Arcanist 3 | HP 17/17 | AC 15 Touch 11 Flat-Footed 14 | CMB -1 CMD 10 | Saves: Fort +2 Ref +3 Will +4 | Perception: +2 | Init: +1 | Status: Normal | Spell Effects: Mage Armor (3 hours)
GM Stargin wrote:

That's a loaded question if I've ever heard one. ...I say go for it, Virdel. What's the worse that could happen, right? ^^

dun dun dun

Albus just want to make sure you saw the post just a minute before you posted :).

Male Human Ranger/3 | SPD 20ft/30ft combat | Init: +2 | Per: +12 | HP 18/23 | AC:17 T:13 FF:14 | CMB +6 +2w/Deft M CMD 17 | Status:Injured, -2 Dex -1 AC -1 CMD

Nope didn't have a clue, before now, just want to make sure I recovered my pack and through in a little characterization.

How's the campaign going so far guys?

Laro you haven't posted in a bit. Are you more interested in the combat portions?

Female Human Occultist Arcanist 3 | HP 17/17 | AC 15 Touch 11 Flat-Footed 14 | CMB -1 CMD 10 | Saves: Fort +2 Ref +3 Will +4 | Perception: +2 | Init: +1 | Status: Normal | Spell Effects: Mage Armor (3 hours)

I think it's going well! Although, now that the characters know that the children have been abducted by kobolds, I'm wondering how we'll handle things like resting, IC-wise. It seems unlikely, with the children taken for some presumably nefarious purpose, that Aelerie would say, "Well, I'm going to grab eight hours of sleep so I can recharge the ol' magic batteries. 'Night all!" I guess things feel a lot more urgent now than they did last time around.

Maybe I'm overthinking it? You guys can tell me if I am. ;)

Yeah that's a huge weakness of this module.

I have a plan though!

Female Human Occultist Arcanist 3 | HP 17/17 | AC 15 Touch 11 Flat-Footed 14 | CMB -1 CMD 10 | Saves: Fort +2 Ref +3 Will +4 | Perception: +2 | Init: +1 | Status: Normal | Spell Effects: Mage Armor (3 hours)

So I guess I was worrying for nothing? Classic me. =)

Glad to know you've got it covered!

Male Human Ranger/3 | SPD 20ft/30ft combat | Init: +2 | Per: +12 | HP 18/23 | AC:17 T:13 FF:14 | CMB +6 +2w/Deft M CMD 17 | Status:Injured, -2 Dex -1 AC -1 CMD

It going okay, biggest issue is in syncing everyone's schedule, in posting with five people it's likely a given day will be busy/sick for someone. Not sure what to do about that except patience.

Speaking of. Probably won't be able to post today :)

BTW. Are you guys okay with PG13 level language? Should have asked before Jeva got all salty and frothing.

male halfling oracle of intrigue 3 | HP 25/25, L1 spells 1/6 | AC 17, T 14, FF 14 | F +5, R +6, W +5 (+2 vs. fear) | CMB +1, CMD 14 | Spd 30' | Perc +8, deaf | Init +3

It's just fine with me.

Female Human Occultist Arcanist 3 | HP 17/17 | AC 15 Touch 11 Flat-Footed 14 | CMB -1 CMD 10 | Saves: Fort +2 Ref +3 Will +4 | Perception: +2 | Init: +1 | Status: Normal | Spell Effects: Mage Armor (3 hours)

Me too. It takes a bit more for my delicate sensibilities to be offended, but thanks for asking.

Male Human Warpriest of Desna 3 HP 21/24; AC 18/12/16; Saves +6/+3/+8; +7 Per, +4 Init; 0/4 Blessing, 1/6 Fervor

*Shrug*
I don't really care.

Male Human Ranger/3 | SPD 20ft/30ft combat | Init: +2 | Per: +12 | HP 18/23 | AC:17 T:13 FF:14 | CMB +6 +2w/Deft M CMD 17 | Status:Injured, -2 Dex -1 AC -1 CMD

Raised South Side Chicago, not even noticeable. :)

Male Halfling Rogue 3| AC 19 T 15 FF 15 | HP 7/27| F +5 R +9 W +4; +2 v Fear | Init +8 | Perc +8

You're good.

Hah, figured I might as well make sure.

So explanation of GM doing a dumb this time. Turns out you have to roll to avoid AOOs for each person you're going to be avoiding when you move. Instead I just rolled Jeva's acrobatics once and applied to both Javell and Albus and rolled for Albus' AOO (which would have landed).

When I realized my mistake I rolled separately at the end of the post to keep from messing up all the subsequent rolls. Jeva rolled really well and invalidated Albus' AOO so I hid that behind a spoiler!

Live and learn!

Ok, I think the combat is over then. The most complicated I've run. How do you guys think it went?

Female Human Occultist Arcanist 3 | HP 17/17 | AC 15 Touch 11 Flat-Footed 14 | CMB -1 CMD 10 | Saves: Fort +2 Ref +3 Will +4 | Perception: +2 | Init: +1 | Status: Normal | Spell Effects: Mage Armor (3 hours)

It was pretty intense. Overall, I'd say it went pretty well since no one died. Tactically, I think there might be some things I could stand to work on. Hehe =)

Also, I didn't want to come across as a dreaded 'rules lawyer' or whatever, but I think that Javell ought to have gotten an AoO on Jeva's first use of Acrobatics. When you use Acrobatics to leave a square threatened by more than one enemy, the DC increases by +2 for each additionally enemy. But, with the way we were rolling, I doubt it would have helped much anyway.

In the future, is there a way you would like us to address minor issues like that?

I was called out a few times in the fight by others :) so just call it out when you note an issue. Easier to retcon the sooner the mistake is caught.

Female Human Occultist Arcanist 3 | HP 17/17 | AC 15 Touch 11 Flat-Footed 14 | CMB -1 CMD 10 | Saves: Fort +2 Ref +3 Will +4 | Perception: +2 | Init: +1 | Status: Normal | Spell Effects: Mage Armor (3 hours)

See something, say something? I can do that. I just had to ask first.

Plus, I didn't want to spoil your fun. ;)

Male Halfling Rogue 3| AC 19 T 15 FF 15 | HP 7/27| F +5 R +9 W +4; +2 v Fear | Init +8 | Perc +8

GM, where did you see that you roll acrobatics for each person you provoke from? I don't see that spelled out anywhere clearly. I've always rolled once and used that roll for each CMD, modified as necessary. Kinda like you only roll stealth once.

The combat was fun. Things could have gone better for us but you ran it fine.

Thanks all.

OOC note though. Like we discussed earlier a weakness of this module is the discrepancy between the severity of the situation it creates and the encounter design. Do what makes sense for you guys but if you push on it'll still work because of what I have planned.

Also I am going on a vacation for a week starting tomorrow! I think I will be able to keep up with a once a week pace but maybe not!

I meant once a day!

Female Human Occultist Arcanist 3 | HP 17/17 | AC 15 Touch 11 Flat-Footed 14 | CMB -1 CMD 10 | Saves: Fort +2 Ref +3 Will +4 | Perception: +2 | Init: +1 | Status: Normal | Spell Effects: Mage Armor (3 hours)

Even though we decided to rest this time, I'm curious about what you had planned if we pressed on...

Enjoy your vacation!

And Albus, I hope your computer troubles are resolved soon.

Male Human Ranger/3 | SPD 20ft/30ft combat | Init: +2 | Per: +12 | HP 18/23 | AC:17 T:13 FF:14 | CMB +6 +2w/Deft M CMD 17 | Status:Injured, -2 Dex -1 AC -1 CMD

Thanks for the good wishes everyone.

The combat ran well, everything in order, and was clear. The maps were very useful, if troublesome to make, at least it was worthwhile.

Bizarre week. Computer down, tornado - passed north - I'm fine, power outage next day, sick in the afternoon, ISP failure after power back, day after that another power outage and bad weather - for March, really bad for May. Other lesser RL issues. Okay, pity party over, I'm alive, well enough, and everything is fixable eventually. Still working out some comp issues but should be posting close to normal for next week.

Have a great vacation, GM Stargin, you deserve it.

Thanks Albus. Hope you are doing well with you recovering everything. Should be back up to speed Tuesday. Might get a post in here or there before.

Not all the way back but at least here's a surprise round for you guys!

The boards are terrible today. Also the grammar and editing in my last post!

Please start getting ready to level up!

Male Human Warpriest of Desna 3 HP 21/24; AC 18/12/16; Saves +6/+3/+8; +7 Per, +4 Init; 0/4 Blessing, 1/6 Fervor

Sweet!

I already know what feat I'm taking.

Male Human Warpriest of Desna 3 HP 21/24; AC 18/12/16; Saves +6/+3/+8; +7 Per, +4 Init; 0/4 Blessing, 1/6 Fervor

So, quick question: the feat Starry Grace. Dex-to-damage with a starknife. I figure there's nothing changed, but it never hurts to ask how this interacts with your houserules? Does this apply to all (throwing) weapons? Because that would be awesome. Otherwise, I'll just have to pick up a few more starknives next time we're in town.

Female Human Occultist Arcanist 3 | HP 17/17 | AC 15 Touch 11 Flat-Footed 14 | CMB -1 CMD 10 | Saves: Fort +2 Ref +3 Will +4 | Perception: +2 | Init: +1 | Status: Normal | Spell Effects: Mage Armor (3 hours)

Decisions, decisions... Picking out my first arcanist exploit and a new feat! How exciting!

GM Stargin, with summon monster ii coming online soon, would you consider elementals from Bestiary 2 to be fair game (ice, lightning, magma & mud) or only the ones from Bestiary 1 (air, earth, fire & water)?

Don't forget Aether elementals from B5. Those guys are pretty awesome.

Female Human Occultist Arcanist 3 | HP 17/17 | AC 15 Touch 11 Flat-Footed 14 | CMB -1 CMD 10 | Saves: Fort +2 Ref +3 Will +4 | Perception: +2 | Init: +1 | Status: Normal | Spell Effects: Mage Armor (3 hours)

Ooh! How have I not seen those before? They do seem pretty awesome. Thanks Javell!

1 person marked this as a favorite.

All Bestiaries are fine Aelerie. I *might* veto a specific summon at the time you try it for the first time though that's unlikely.

And Starry Grace would mean dex to damage with all thrown weapons. Versatility is nice! No reason Javell can't do extra damage with all of his daggers while Aelerie is summoning invisible flying monsters from thin air :p.

How did the last combat go for everyone?

Male Human Warpriest of Desna 3 HP 21/24; AC 18/12/16; Saves +6/+3/+8; +7 Per, +4 Init; 0/4 Blessing, 1/6 Fervor

It went good, you know, once I actually hit something.
Character sheet updated, by the way. Two new feats; Starry Grace and Startoss Comet. Which means I bumped my damage output by 4 (+2 Dex, +2 Startoss) and can now hit two enemies with a single attack.

Female Human Occultist Arcanist 3 | HP 17/17 | AC 15 Touch 11 Flat-Footed 14 | CMB -1 CMD 10 | Saves: Fort +2 Ref +3 Will +4 | Perception: +2 | Init: +1 | Status: Normal | Spell Effects: Mage Armor (3 hours)

Oh happy day! Thanks GM! I promise not to go overboard with the invisible monster shenanigans. ;)

Level Up!:
New HP 17 ((3d6)+3+2)
FCB +1 HP
Saves +1 Fort, +1 Reflex
New Feat Extra Reservoir
Arcanist Exploit Quick Study (Su)
Skills Escape Artist, Knowledge (Arcana, Local, Planes, Religion), Perception, Spellcraft, Use Magic Device
Background Skills Handle Animal, Linguistics (Terran)
New Spells
    1st Level - hypnotism, thunderstomp

I think the combat went well. If those were the "shadows" Graypelt was referring to in the last module, I'm glad we decided against fighting them back then. And I liked the bit about the ruby dispelling the darkness eventually; was that written in the module or were you ad-libbing a little there?

Don't forget your resistance +1 from ABP.

The ruby is actually a part of Hollow's Last Hope and it's been in Gurtlekep's sack all along. I've buffed it up pretty dramatically (including the lightshow) though so that you don't have to take an 8 hour break to level up while kobolds are doing god knows what to innocent children. Basically the ruby is Torag approving of you guys clearing out a former monastery of his of evil creatures so it'll 'charge up' as you go through what's next and start shining when you guys are ready to level up. Feels like a more elegant solution than anything else that could have been done in the module.

I've also been bumping up the levels of the encounters. Is it too much, not enough, or just right so far? Hollow's Last Hope had two darkmantles.

I kind of underestimated how powerful darkness could be in the command of a creature that has darkvision.

Female Human Occultist Arcanist 3 | HP 17/17 | AC 15 Touch 11 Flat-Footed 14 | CMB -1 CMD 10 | Saves: Fort +2 Ref +3 Will +4 | Perception: +2 | Init: +1 | Status: Normal | Spell Effects: Mage Armor (3 hours)

Oh right, I forgot we were doing that. Edited Aelerie's sheet to reflect the resistance bonus.

Hats off to you for coming up with a neat solution to the issue of resting for 8 hours, and for doing so before the module started. The amount of forethought you've given to the game is much appreciated!

With the number of close calls we've had so far, I would say, as a relative novice, that the level of the encounters is just right. I like feeling like the things we face are a challenge, but I also like, you know, not dying, and I think you've struck a good balance. I was getting ready to write up a new character during our fight with Jeva, though. Was she also dialed up a bit, or was she written that way? Either way, that taught me a thing or two about preparedness. I'll definitely be stocking up on scrolls or a wand of shield when we get to town.

Jeva was as written and she was always going to try and ambush the group at an appropriate time. I did throw in the extra wolf though and, well, she wanted blood and a path to Aelerie opened up for her and she took it.

Hope the rest of you guys don't mind peeks behind the curtain!
