Discussion thread for my Fall of Plaguestone game.

So, this module is a game for levels 1-3. This is basically a home game that will earn you 1 full level of PFS credit when we are done.
Since this is essentially a home game, here are some guidelines:

1) You are all Pathfinders in transit to the Almas Lodge in Andoran, returning to the lodge after a successful first adventure. As such, please build a 1st level character of your choosing according to PFS rules (or use a pregen). You may get the 2 standard items being a member of the Swords, Scrolls, and Spells. You also get a free wayfinder. Then add 14 gold to your total.

2) Your ability to purchase magic items in this adventure will be very limited. Buy what you think you might need before the adventure begins.

3) You may use the APG playtest. You may download the files HERE.

4) Regarding character backgrounds: there are a few backgrounds unique to this adventure. These backgrounds may or may not have side quests attached to them that I may tack on to the adventure at my discression. They are located HERE.

5) I highly recommend someone take one of the following backgrounds: Bounty Hunter, Detective, or Guard.

6) If you have any other questions on character creation ask me in this discussion thread.

Thanks for running this! Now, I have to give some thought on a PC.

I appreciate the invite! I am already running this at the moment, so I am going to step out and let someone else have my spot. But good luck with the game and I hope it goes well! :)

Count me in! Might be easiest just to play 1st level Merisiel. But I'm a little confused on the XP.

If I play a 1st level pregen, do I get the equivalent of 12 XP (1 full level) to apply to an existing character of mine?

Or if I create a legitimate new 1st level character for this game, will that character be at level 2 at the completion of this adventure?

Merisiel - Scott wrote:

Or if I create a legitimate new 1st level character for this game, will that character be at level 2 at the completion of this adventure?

The Rules, taken from the Chronicle Sheet document:

PATHFINDER ADVENTURES
Pathfinder Adventure: The Fall of Plaguestone can be played to gain specific benefits for the Pathfinder Society Organized Play campaign.

Key Differences from Scenarios

Pathfinder Adventures are generally larger with longer play times than scenarios and may take multiple sessions to complete. They do not contain specific faction-related elements, nor are they tiered for play by characters over a wide range of levels. Thematically, most modules do not assume the characters are Pathfinders. These adventures are therefor offered outside of the standard organized play environment and can be played with characters who do not conform to organized play requirements.

Modules can be of varying lengths, and each offer XP and other awards appropriate to their length and playtime. PCs can apply the Chronicle gained for playing Pathfinder Adventure: Fall of Plaguestone (included later in this document) to any of their legal organized play characters, granting that character 1 level’s worth of experience (12 XP), 12 Fame, 30 Treasure Bundles appropriate to a character of that level (applied in batches of 10 Treasure Bundles at each 4 XP interval), and 12 Reputation that can be assigned to any faction for which the character has the Faction Champion boon.

Keepsakes

Chronicle sheets for adventures will occasionally include a section for “Keepsakes”. It is generally assumed that a character will only acquire one keepsake per adventure; once a player has applied this Chronicle to a character and purchased a keepsake from the list, they must cross the remaining items in that list off of their Chronicle sheet. This allows them to repurchase the chosen keepsake or even share access to it with other characters using inheritor boons or other options that allow a player to share boons between characters, but all other items cease to be available (though they may be available for acquisition later through the Achievement Point system.)

Applying Credit

Players who complete this adventure, and GMs who run the adventure, gain the Chronicle sheet included with this document which they can apply to any of their Pathfinder Society organized play characters. Players must decide which character to apply credit to when they receive the Chronicle sheet and the GM signs it. Each Chronicle sheet gives 12 XP and access to some or all of the player options (such as items, feats, or spells) contained within the module.

Players earn access to the items and options listed on the Chronicle sheets through their actions during the adventure. If the PCs do not discover an item or fulfill the conditions described in the module to gain access to an option, cross that option off of each player’s Chronicle sheet. If a single PC gains access to an option presented on the Chronicle sheet that can only be obtained by one member of the party (such as the **** ******* in Fall of Plaguestone) they have earned that option on the Chronicle sheet for all members of the group.

Sorry, I'm still confused. Since this game is written as Level 1-3, can I use an existing character, who is currently Level 1, 2, or 3? If so, at the completion, that character would gain 12 XP (a full level).

Or is the idea that we all start as Level 1's for this adventure? If so, do you have a preference whether we create new characters vs. pregens?

Well, the idea is that you play any character you want to create. After we finish the mod, you get a chronicle sheet and you may apply it to any PFS character you want to, regardless of the actual fate of the character you play in the game.

So you can roll a level 1 gnome cleric using the guidelines I gave above for this, have him permanently die heroically saving a town from complete and utter destruction, and apply the 12XP of credit at the game's conclusion to your PFS rogue.

I see. So even if I create a new character, and he levels up in-game, I don't really get to keep that character. Fair enough.

Since I had fun playing Merisiel last game, I'm gonna customize the level 1 pregen, and basically play her.

I think we filled the quota for my requested backgrounds (makes my storytelling job easier). Everyone else can go with what they like.

Please try to flesh out your characters by Thursday night. I want to start the game this Friday.

aka GM Valen Human (mostly)

Due to holiday travel/obligations and the press of work leading up to it, I don't think I will have time to create an original PC for this by Sunday. Tuesday is more likely before I would have a playable PC. Given the party make up, I was leaning toward a bard or a cleric.

If all else fails, I can just play Fumbus again, I suppose.

Wise Fox,

My heritage feat is cliff scale lizard, which I believe allows me to climb with my feet/tail, leaving my hands free for combat. My goal is try and climb up a tree or wall to get out of melee range, and then fire away with arrows.

https://2e.aonprd.com/Heritages.aspx?Ancestry=15

I wanted to check with you on how that would work. He doesn’t yet have a climb speed, (level 5), and I wasn’t sure what kind of a dc check would be necessary to pull that off.

Right. Saw this this afternoon and then promptly forgot about this...

To answer the question as best I can, without a climb move speed you'll have to use the athletics skill to climb. The basic simple skill DCs are listed in Pg. 234 of the core rulebook, which divides task dificultys into untrained, trained, expert, master, and legendary difficulties.

The book gives examples the difficulty of various types of climbing actions on page 241. Climbing rope or a typical tree is trained (DC 15), while climbing a wall with small handholds and footholds is listed as expert (DC 20)

Given that this is a low level campaign, the DCs will probably be -1 or -2 lower than the suggested DCs in the core rulebook, but don't count on it. Given the way the pathfinder 2 skill based system scales, the high relative DCs at low levels is probably intentional.

Those of you who are new to play by posts, I really need you people to post your character sheets in your alias's page, so I have easy reference to your stats and items you have available to your character. I need to be able to look at your character sheet at will so I can do secret skill checks on your behalf.

Merry Christmas and Happy holidays, everyone! -- Scott

Hey everyone, happy new year!

I noticed today that the PFS rules seem to have changed for what you are allowed to purchase. The official website now states you can buy level+2 for common items:

Purchasing Equipment
As you complete adventures, you will gain more wealth that can be used to buy any common item that is no more than 2 levels higher than your current level. Uncommon items may be granted by Chronicle sheets or through other special boons. Characters with the appropriate crafting feats may also be able to obtain formulas for equipment that they can create during Downtime.

I'm pretty sure that said only your level not too long ago, that's why my druid just recently got his L4 staff of healing.

Wise Fox, the names of some key NPCs keep changing and I'm not sure what to call them.

Hallod or Harrold

GM Wise Fox wrote:

You overhear a lot of mundane gossip from the farmers. You also hear of some burly drunk named Hallod was told to go home earlier today.

"Nevermind he is the richest person who passes by on a regular basis to our tavern outside Mr Hallod."
GM Wise Fox wrote:

"Bort always thought it was Harrold, and tried to prove it, but he was never able to. I asked him to stop, because Harrold is very dangerous. He said he would, but now I think he never did..."

The party goes to see the Sheriff, who hears of your investigation, and raises no objection to questioning Phinick or Harrold. You follow the directions to Phinick's junkyard. As you do so, you find him in a very difficult situation.

Phinick or Phenrik

GM Wise Fox wrote:

"Hmmm. Well, I did see Phinick loitering around the back a little bit. He works around here as the the town's garbage man, picks up the trash around the town, eats the town's castaways, and burns the rest near his home."

"Phinick lives in an abandoned home near the northern woods, I believe."
GM Wise Fox wrote:

The goblin continues to run away from the battle.

"Not stay, not stay. Phenick must hide. Get away from all Longshanks."
"No Way! Phenick knows longshanks! Blame us goblins for all bad things!"

Darr and Lizzo manage to keep on Phinrik's tail, keeping pace with the goblin all the way to his home... Seeing Darr, Mandoo, and Lizzo rapidly catching up to him, Phinrick heads south towards the river.

The goblin, realizing he is caught, begins to sob and cry. "Phenrik didn't know! Phenrik didn't want to do it! Phenrik sorry! Phenrik sorry!"

We don't care what you'd prefer, but it gets awkward if we're never sure what their names actually are. So let us know, and we'll stick with that!

Supposed to be Phinick. But I'm pretty bad with spelling, and there is only one character anywhere close with that spelling. But yeah.

Phinick.

Would be a lot easier if I could edit posts more than an hour old in this forum, but I can't.

Spelling, shmelling. No worries. I just think it's awkward if all us players are saying different names as we speak to these NPCs in our posts.

And it's Hallod, not Harrold, yes? I mean, as long as we players know the real names, no problem if they get spelled differently.

Yes, it is Hallod.

Thanks for the hero points!

I was curious with this type of an adventure how the PFS freebies work. I started off the adventure with two healing potions, is there a point where I would be able to top those back up for free?

Actually, is there even a place to purchase a healing potion from in this town? :)

The reason I gave everyone some additional gold to spend at the start of the game is so that I wouldn't run into this problem, and the mod was never designed to have "free consumables" at all. There simply are not a lot of places to buy expendables or purchase custom equipment in this adventure. Feedmill serves as the local tavern, inn, and general store. There are a few magical potions there for sale, but that is it.

Wanted to post more this weekend, but boss called me in the middle of PFS yesterday and asked me if I can work today.

Sorry you got stuck at work. Just make sure you get comp time to make up for it!

As for healing, I think Lizzo means that if this Fall of Plaguestone adventure counts as 3 normal scenarios, then it's a fair question to ask if at those junctures we treat it as a new scenario to re-stock up, like we would for any normal scenario. Sounds like that's NOT the case. Fair enough.

But healing should be okay...both the Rogue and Druid have +7 Medicine along with Healer's Tools. Easier if we're not in combat, but even so, Tyrion has Battle Medicine for in-combat healing if needed. And Darr or Queckworth may be able to help occasionally with healing spells too.

I just looked up the spell. Pretty cool. Maybe we could use it in the shack. Can you use the unseen servant like a remote controlled drone with a camera and arms? Or is it more like a command and release robot that returns to report sort of thing? Can you cast it only once a day? If so, then we may want to save it for later.

Quecksworth can cast two 1st level spells per day. The unseen servant can take his directions and execute them, as it understands the gnome's language. However, it can't report as it can't speak or even sign (visibly at least).

While it does have a +0 Charisma score, a very generous GM may let it sketch a picture with a successful Perform check or some such, but given its -5 Intelligence score, it is not likely to provide you with any marking that are useful.

Tyrion pointed out privately this morning that he did not believe that shuriken could be flurried into two attacks in one round. After a little digging, it appears that he is correct:

Flurry of Blows (pp156) specifies “Make two unarmed Strikes”.

Monastic Weaponry (pp158) specifies “You can use melee monk weapons with any of your monk feats or monk abilities that normally require unarmed attacks...”

The problem is that Shuriken is the only monk weapon listed under Ranged Weapons and not under Melee Weapons in the weapons lists (pp281), which pretty much means that they are not covered by the unarmed attack upgrade clause in Monastic Weaponry and thus cannot be used with Flurry of Blows.

Seems like a mistake to me given how shuriken work. I think a trained martial artist could easily release two shuriken in quick succession, but hey... rules as written I guess.

Fortunately (or not), both of Mandoo's shuriken missed in the last round, so no biggie.
