GM Grey |
Lol, just made it!
Trissae casts a magic, illuminating shower of dust at the end of the hallway and outside in the storm. A glow lights up the man holding the scroll.
Grellik grabs at the man, who ducks. After a bit of successfully defending himself from the bugbear, Grellik finally gets a hand on the scroll and pulls it out of his hands.
"Wait, you're the Bogsharks?!" he says, after Grellik takes the scroll. "But you just GAVE me that!" He continue to takes dodge actions.
"Doesn't matter, they're attacking us!" says the man with the short swords, attacking Adrien back. "We can question their corpses!"
The man scores a single hit.
Adrien, take 7 damage
The two crossbowmen in the hallway near Adrien and Grellik move up. One fires at disadvantage (Being at melee with Grellick and Adrien), and the other has cover against his shot.
One hit on Adrien (the melee ranged one), one hit on Grellik.
Grellik, take 6 damage. Adrien, take 8
The crossbowman Ozz attacked disengages and moves behind his buddy. His buddy opens fire.
Ozz, take 8 damage
The elevator continues to descend.
Adrien & Ozz, followed by Trissae and Grellik
Adrien Cavell |
Parry: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Cavell sweeps the hit to the side, barely taking a scratch.
Are those crossbow men shooting like diagonally through the corners of the walls? Didn't expect to get hit by them.
"When you hear we're the Bogsharks, you're supposed to lay down arms and surrender!"
He thrusts with Sapphire's Sabre.

Dmg: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13

GM Grey |
One is adjacent to you, so drawing a line from one corner of his box to the four corners of your box, none actually pass through the wall. No cover. The other, I suppose, didn't even need to move up, as in this hallway he can draw from one corner of his box to two corners of either yours and Grellik's box, allowing him to target you but having cover interfering with him doing so. I'm not sure if they have updated targeting rules in 5e (My guess is they probably have barely mentioned it), but this is the style I'm familiar with, and I believe what both 3.5, 4th, and pathfinder all use.
Adrien, as the man fighting you hits you with his shortsword, you feel the anger within Sapphire's blade flow out into you.
In addition, while the sword is on your person, you must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw whenever you take damage in combat. On a failed saving save, you must attack the creature that damaged you until you drop to 0 hit points or it does, or until you can't reach the creature to make a melee attack against it.
The man takes more damage from Adrien's blow, and isn't looking great.
GM Grey |
Ozz hews the rope going through the makeshift-shaft, and it disappears downward before the far side of the rope flies upward. The elevator comes crashing down.
Three men attempt to jump off the elevator as it comes rushing past the ground floor, but only one succeeds.
"Gasper!" shouts a thuggish man yells down the shaft as he lands next to ozz, blocking the half-orc from the exit door. He grits his teeth. "YOU F%!" he shouts in Ozz's face.
Trissae and Grellik.
Grellik |
Grellik does his best to ignore the pain from the bolt, but groan in pain despite himelf. CON save: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8 He looks around, suddenly realizing the situation might not be what it seems. He turns again to the former scroll bearer. "What do you mean we gave it to you? WHo gave this to you?" (depending on the answer he will conclude his go after Trissae)
Trissae Darkwhisper |
Triss's eyes narrow as the battle unfolds. Aiming the bow away from the nervous door guard she turns her attention to the assaulting guards.
Trissae fires the bow at the bloodied guard assaulting Adrien.
Shot: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15
damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5
"Adrien! let fly your lightning fast steel!" Bonus action: Bardic inspiration (1/4)
GM Grey |
Is that a flavor text con-save, Grellik?
Adrien, whoops! Yes, that should have been Grasper.
It's difficult to get a shot on the man fighting with Adrien without hitting Grellik, and Trissae's shot goes wide.
Normally being in melee with someone gives disadvantage to ranged attacks, but the dude who was holding the scroll is on defensive enough that you aren't harried in your shot.
The scrawny lurker looks to Grellik. "Some half-orc guy! I don't know his name. Grasper said that he's his Bogshark contact, and that he'd have work for him!"
Grellik |
Grellik winces when he realizes that Grimgar sent that scroll in. He curses under his breath in goblin, throws his greatsword to the ground a few feet away, hold up hios hands and shouts "Wait! HOLD! There has been a terrible error. We are not your enemy!" He snaps at his three, stand down, back away and defend yourself only!" he turns to the guards attacking them "Again, we are not your enemy. There had been a misunderstanding. The Bogsharks have no quarrel with you. Please, hear me out" persuasion+inspiration: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (3) - 1 = 21d20 - 1 ⇒ (4) - 1 = 3 oh wow, looks like its hopeless >.<
GM Grey |
Dang, well it was worth a shot Grellik. Tell you what, if you leave yourself totally open in your gesture of ending this fight (attacks and grapple checks against you have advantage for the next round), you'll have advantage on your persuasion without having you burn your inspiration. Otherwise, I'll still give you an action you can use to dodge with, without having to change anything (attacks have disadvantage).
GM Grey |
"You just dropped our boss down the hole!" the thug standing near Ozz hollers, outraged.
"What IS this? Assassination?! A Take over?! I don't buy it, big guy!" the bloodied man with the two short swords says, turning his blades on the disarmed bugbear.
Grellik, what's your current Shield declaration? Are you using it here?
He scores two hits past the bugbears armor (Ac 14 right now, yeah?). Grellik, take 6 damage, and 9 damage. 15 total.
Both crossbowmen in this alley fire at Adrien. Being in Melee with one, Adrien is able to harry the first enough to make his shot go wide, and duck behind the wall just as the other is about to fire to take cover from the second. Both miss.
The enforcer turns his Mace onto Ozz as the two crossbowmen reload and fire. The two crossbowmen find their mark on the half-orc.
Take 11 damage, ozz
The enforcer lands two solid blows on ozz.
Take an additional 17 damage
Adrien and Ozz
Ozz the Bog Ghost |
"Need a hand here!" Ozz hollers out as he tries blocking the mace with his axe, fails, and gets clubbed in the chest a couple of times as crossbows pepper him.
Waiting to see what Adrien does first.
Adrien Cavell |
"They're only humans, Ozz. You going down that easy?"

Ozz grins like his mask at the man hitting him with his mace, bolstered by Adrien's support. "You!" he growls.
Casting Hunter's Mark on the thug.

Damage: 1d10 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 101d6 ⇒ 6
Grellik |
Grellik shakes his head. "We have nothing to do with whats happening downstairs! Why would be even-- He cuts himself off, realizing that debate is useless at this point, and Ozz' life is in danger. He growls, "so be it." He steps over the fallen guard, into 4D to block the passage, and chants and gestures at the guard in melee with Ozz, as silvery bolts fly from his hand. magic missile: 3d4 + 3 ⇒ (3, 1, 2) + 3 = 9 He calls his sword back to his hand, brandishing at the guards in the side passage. "finish him off and lets go!" he calls back to Adrien and Ozz.
Trissae Darkwhisper |
"Ozz! Be careful!" casting Heal Word (3/4)(Bonus Action) and rejuvinating Ozz, healing: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6.
She then stows the bow, draws her sword and steps aside. 5 feet, not out of threatening range of the door guard.
"Get out of the way!" She growls at the man as she makes room for him to step out.
GM Grey |
Haha, there's not 5 feet to step aside, Trissae, but no worries, I get what you're trying to do, and this won't provoke and you'll keep your position on the map.
The lurker from the alley gives one last look at Grellik who had taken his important scroll from him, gives a look at the Drow, and decides to book it. He gives her a nod.
His turn isn't up yet, but he's willing to leave. You can walk past him if you'd like, as if he weren't an enemy. Do you wish you move up and use an action at all?
Trissae Darkwhisper |
that's what I'll do then! attacking the one past Grellik.
Triss flicks the blade upward as she skirts past the guard and then Grellik. "Hyaaaaaa!" she shouts, and Swings at the foe: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5. Her unfortunate bravado giving the crossbowmen ample time to parry the blow with ease.
you now can't unhear that in link's voice
GM Grey |
Trissae movies up, and misses the crowbowman. Still, he yelps as he flinches back, alarmed by the drow's surprise.
Magic missiles pepper into Zhentarim enforcer. He clearly didn't like that, but he's still up and looking relatively alright.
Seeing the guard with the two swords taken down right in front of him, and then getting attacked by a drow must have been to much, because he disengages and flees back down the hallway where he came. "Help! Help!" he cries.
"S@!" the remaining crossbowman says, leveling his crossbow at Trissae and fires. "Where IS everyone?" he says, panicking while reloading his crossbow.
Hit. Take 3 damage, Trissae.
The guard who had been holding the scroll, runs outside into the storm.
The two crossbowmen near Ozz reload and fire at the half-orc.
One hit. Ozz, take 8 damage.
Because of Trissae and Adrien, Ozz is able to grit his teeth and continue fighting despite him starting to accumulate crossbow wounds to a dangerous degree.
The enforcer turns to see The bugbear casting spells. "HEY!" he shouts. "No magic!" he glowers, swinging once at Adrien and at Ozz with a backhand with his weapon.
Adrien, take 6 damage. Ozz, Take 6 damage.
Ozz hasn't taken so much punishment ever before, but with support he is still standing. (Down to 3 HP if my math is right.)
"Out of the way!" comes a shrill voice down the hallway near Trissae and Grellik. A small figure wearing dark clothes runs down the hallway, a young boy it looks like, a few years older than the one saved from the giant frogs by the Sharks and Dolson.
He tumbles past the guard with the crossbow, and tries to do the same with Grellik and Trissae.
You two may make an acrobatics check to try and oppose the small figure if you don't wish him to move through your squares. You may choose to allow him past if you wish.
The small figure is armed, hiding a dagger behind his forearm in a reverse grip.

Ozz summons the devil.
The enforcer finally seems able to defend himself a bit. Adrien only draws a bit of blood as the man blocks blows from both him and Ozz.
He is bloodied, but still standing.
The little shape stops at Grellik, unable to maneuver past him. "Hey!" he squeaks.
However, now he is underfoot of Trissae, potentially getting in the way of her footwork. I'ma give you disadvantage to any dex saving throws you and this small figure need to make while you're in the same square.
Trissae and Grellik
Trissae Darkwhisper |
acrobatics: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18
Trissae juxes toward the fleeing guard, but uses her momentum instead to kick-jump somersault off the wall to land free and away from the small chap and run down the hall toward Adrien.
Under her breath she utters the incantation to another Healing word (2/4) then shouts, "Ozz! Think of the Ale!" wisps of golden rejuvenating magic wafting out her lips, through the air, swirling and merging with the Half-Orc. healing: 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6.

Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12
damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
Grellik |
Grellik repeats to the boy "What's happening down there! who is attacking you?" He does not think the boy will necessarily talk, but hopes that the shock of the situation, as well as the boy not being privy to what just happened up here can provoke some kind of response. That and he is big and booming. Intimidation: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24(in case its necessary or relevant)
Whether the child answers or not, he lets him by, focusing on the battle at hand. He moves next to the corridor to [4D], blocking the side passage guards from accessing yhe main passage. He steadies himself second wind: 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9, and launches another three missiles at the enforcer in combat with Ozz and Adrien magic missile: 3d4 + 3 ⇒ (4, 2, 3) + 3 = 12
as does so what the crosbowmen said clicks with him and he turns and shouts"When we were leaving, we heard the sounds of battle. I would guess that is what is detaining your men!"Grellik has more to say, but I imagine that is the extent of what he can say in 6 seconds (in fact, it probably exceeds it)
And the Marr encounter happened...today? trying to remember if I should have been down a spell slot from the fetherfall. IF so that means I am out of spells. If not, then Grellik will use Shield on any incoming attacks :D
Adrien Cavell |
Reading back, it's the same day as the Marr capture. I panicked a second thinking I had used abilities that wouldn't be available, but I think technically Cavell got a short rest on the rooftop. He was up there just waiting for an hour or two. Gonna add abilities to my stat tracker thing to try and prevent that slipup in the future.
GM Grey |
Trissae, flavor acrobatics roll? You could easily move out of the square where the small figure and you are standing in, he doesn't want you there anyway.
Trissae heals Ozz with her magics and launches an arrow at the enforcer, who ducks at the last moment and the arrow misses him.
Grellik asks the "kid" questions, using his size to get answers out of him.
"Where'd he go?" comes a voice from further in the compound, from the way the kid had come. "Down here! With The Bogsharks!" comes another voice, the crossbowman who ran away?
"BOGsharks?!" the kid answers, stopping his attempts to get around Grellik. "S@$~! We all need to get out of here, there are tons more of these Zhent bastards coming!" He holds his dagger up, no longer trying to hide it, facing the hall with the crossbowman.
The crossbowman reloads and fires at the "kid", but his shot is too rushed, and misses.
The two crossbowmen down the hall take their shots at Ozz. One shot narrowly misses, the half-orc just barely able to duck out of the way of the second shot.
1 hit. Take 12 damage
Seeing the half orc nearly about to fall, the enforcer swings his mace down at him, but again, Ozz is just barely able to defend himself. Instead of swinging at Adrien with the backswing, he clubs at Ozz again, trying to get through his guard.
1 Hit, take 6 damage
If my math is right, this brings Ozz perfectly to 0 HP. I promise, I'm not making this s~+& up. Ozz is my character and this situation suuuuuuuuucked!
His mace gets through, strikes Ozz on the skull, and Ozz drops unconscious. The enforcer, his body peppered with holes from magic missiles and dents from both Ozz and Adrien's attacks turns to face Cavell and Trissae, his crossbowmen behind him choosing their next target.
Booted feet sound on the floor boards where all the shouting was heard, more feet approaching. A handful of guards turns the corner, two crossbowmen starting to lower their weapons. Another melee fighter is at the head of the group, wielding a hand-axe in each hand.
They dashed this turn, and are unable to act until the next round.
"Lolth's sticky ass!" the "kid" curses. "Bet you think that's funny, don't you Dorick? Real f&@+ing funny, eh?" He shouts to the enforcer. Grellik notices him making a small gesture with one hand as he speaks.
"Heh... Hehe... HAHAHAHAHA!" The enforcer chuckles. Then Guffaws. Then he breaks out into side-splitting laughter. He drops to his hands and knees before Adrien, incapacitated by the laughter. He rolls on his sides, shaking as he laughs, his hand still gripping his weapon.
"COME ON COME ON COME ON!" The kid shouts at the others sharks. "It's TIME TO GO"

And I actually don't know if that does kill him or not, but Cavell isn't stopping to make sure he's dead.
Ozz the Bog Ghost |
Ozz will give a final, harried look at the crowbowmen, and then dash past his allies away from the fight, and out the building into the storm, as they begin their retreat.

Grellik looks horrified as the kid seems to implicate the Sharks in whatever he was doing down there, and that they may have just made an enemy of the Zhentarim with nothing to show for it.
But now is not the time. He waits for Trissae to pass him, sets fire to the walls (or something else flammable) (Yeah, I know--it will take time for it to really get going :D)near him with a point blank firebolt, damage: 1d10 ⇒ 1 and hurries out himself. If for whatever reason Trissae does not beat feet toward the exit, Grellik will do something different :D
