The Bogshark Fiasco

Chapter 3 - Circling Sharks

The storm spins overhead. Lightning crashes, fiery explosions cast red glares in brief bursts over the city. Freezing rain sweeps the streets, and the cities' dazers shamble toward the lightning struck house.

328gp 4sp cost for all of it. That makes 93gp, 31sp, and 14cp leftover.

Also note that Cavell isn't parting with the sp he won from Mornak, so I'm just going to remove that from my spendable sheet and assume it has its own pouch (so 16 sp instead of 31sp).

Grellik narrows his eyes, and takes a second to collect his thoughts. "Alright, but then we need one more condition: neither must drag the other into their affairs. Whatever work you do for your god, do not let us hear of it or see its results. Agreed?"

Assuming he shakes it, Grellik says "If you will excuse me..." and turns to leave. when he reaches the doorway he turns back partially and says. "I believe you to be a man of your word--do not disappoint me. If you cross us, I swear to you, I will be as much a servant of Murder as you on that day." Intimidate: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10Not that I think it will phase Rybick, and for insight purposes, Grellik isn't trying to scare them into anything, just make his intent crystal clear lest one of them get it into his head to try something funny. And what a time to roll a freakin 5 >.<

NPC: Head of Yartar's Church of Bane

Grellik:

He nods to you, and he and Tavers turn toward the door. "I need to make use of one of the carts out near the barn. I hope that is okay. I intend to bring it back unaltered."

He opens the door and lets Tavers leave, but he stands back and looks at you one last time. "When I return, if you or any of your other friends desire to talk about your feelings of what is happening in the city regarding your imprisoned friends... If you need to understand your anger and hatred better, I can help."

He listens to Grellik's responses, and then probably leaves (Assuming you don't have anything too attention demanding to say.)

Adrien:

As you pass through the city toward The Cointoss, you see posters of you and your friends plastered onto walls and public boards. More execution notices, but with alterations. Yours, Trissae's, and Ozz's have been changed with ink to read "At large in the city, WANTED", along with a new one of Tease.

The poster of Tease, however, it of the wretch he appeared to be while imprisoned with the Shields; his hair is dark and greasy looking, his beard scraggly, his teeth rotten, and his face pock-marked. It looks nearly entirely different from the dwarf now waiting at Dart's hideout.

Nearing The Cointoss, you see the place guarded by a few Shields. Two stand out front, an elf man and a half-orc woman with a long-shafted axe, and upon the roof sits another armed with a crossbow. Apparently the watch Trissae and Grellik had run into earlier in the morning are still at their posts.

You DO notice something odd, however. The half-orc woman, while shifting her weight and the grip on her weapon, she makes a couple of odd motions with one hand.

Thieves Cant: Understood

You spot this as you near, but aren't particularly close to the place.

Spoiler:

Cavell saunters up to the half-orc woman, "Pleasant weather we're having, may we go in for some drinks?" He offers a handshake and a smile.

Thieves Cant: Hired protection?

Adrien:

You approach the gracefully built Shield with her long-axe in the pouring rain and hail, the wind occasionally trying to steal your hat.

When you ask your question, the elf nearer the door, half leaning against the wall, laugh's irritably and rolls his eyes. The half-orc looks to be about to respond to you when she notices your Cant and stops, surprised. She shakes your hand, gives you a subtle, warning shake of her head and speaks.

"Yeah, the day is just all manner of pleasant. No, you can't go in for drinks. The Toss is being used to help house the sick, the Happy Hall is getting getting rather full."

About this time, a couple of other guards approach The Cointoss guiding a dazed looking woman in a soaking wet dress ahead of them. "Anymore room?" the approaching guard says.

"I think..." the elf man says, and gestures them in.

GM:

Trissae pulls aside a stool and begins to write:

Dearest Silvers,

I hope this letter finds you well. I write to you now of the dire urgency in the turn of events that have unfolded. I sincerely hope that after this second breakout of plague that the other Shields will take my offer more seriously. I trust you (and Rast), but after what the commander pulled I am not so sure I can trust other Shields anymore. Your people have to understand that soon a flimsy wall built by mortal hands are not going to hold back this deluge, only if we work together to find the culprit will Yartar be relieved of this pox.

Secondly, I wish to warn you... Mornak Bogharrow was not just any other Bogshark, he was the moral backbone of our troop. A wise man with sagely advice and kind words who worked tirelessly to afford many of our members the sensibilities of gentle hearts. He's dead now. I cannot presume to know how the others will react. Adrien has become.... more violent, and I would assume Ozz will have too. I don't know that I am any longer a voice they can hear, so, please let your men know to be careful.
I do not know what Frostheight plays at, either it was a stroke of genius that he chose Mornak, or that by Mornak's own fault he is the one who hung. If he did indeed murder two of your brothers you have my condolences.

Do not lose faith, the goddess has giving me this opportunity to be the drow I know I can be... and she has sent me you. Remember, when the chips are down you always have friends.

~The Bog Harper, Bandit-Princess

The note is rife with misspellings and elven characters that resemble their common counterparts. It is written of conviction and emotion, and Triss would have it no other way.

She turns and heads out of the room and back into the room with Tease.

Tease:

"Tease hun, would you be willing to do me a favor? How comfortable are you with making a small mail delivery?" She gives him a sweet smile as she holds up the letter.

"I'm thinking of just dropping it off with a patrol with the excuse that 'a woman in an alley said a drow gave her this', what do you think?" She follows with as she walks toward him.

Adrien:

She shrugs, taking the silver piece with some obvious confusion. "There are probably a few small dives around, but nothing to even the Cointoss' standards and no promises they are open during all of this. You... You do realize that these are bad times, right?" She gives you a look like you might be daft.

The elf speaks up. "You're looking for a woman?! By the gods, man, you're lucky you're still healthy and relatively sane!"

The half-orc woman seems to agree, but gives you directions to a small place where you MIGHT be able to find a drink.

Anything more will require skill checks

Trissae:

Tease thinks your idea is sound, and is willing to do the legwork. He wants to get a look at the current state of the city and promises not to be gone long.

You walk a couple of blocks away and find a several narrow two-story buildings set so closely together that there is nearly not enough space to go between them, a residential block. One of the buildings has a faded sign in the front windows, visible in-front of the drawn curtains.

You and Ugly stand in front of the building, looking at the blue and grey sign with an ugly looking ferret painted beneath the words "The Drunken Pest" in the pouring rain.

Ugly's fingers tap on the hilt of the ruby-set longsword at his hip. "What do you think?" he asks, giving you a skeptical look before turning it at the shut and soaked front door. "Think they're open?"

Sorry for the posting delays. I'll make an effort to be more prompt :/

Trissae:
Grellik sighs and removes his mask. "About as good as it could, I fear. We have a solid agreement, but it appears as though our homicidal neighbors are planning on staying here for a while. Perhaps if we had all been together, and even then we would require Ozz, I could have convinced him that it might be better to find another bolt hole, rather than risk too many casualties. But as it was, if I had insisted on terms too onerous for them, it would have been the five of them, against the one of me, which did not bode well for me, my girth not withstanding. And Grellik will fill Trissae in on how the conversation went (In other words, she can just read the spoiler tags :D)

And I trust you are feeling better. If you have overexerted yourself,. please, do not feel that you cannot rest. I can monitor things until Cavell returns.

Adrien:

Eventually someone comes down to the window, gazes out, and opens the door to see what yo want, but behind a chain-bolt.

They are reluctant to let you in to serve you, but a persuasion check (offer a large enough bribe for advantage) might allow him to just ignore two people.

1gp is 5 mugs of ale, so that's 50 mugs of ale. Hope that's a reasonable amount for this besieged f#*#ed city.

Adrien:

Aye, very much so.

The man takes you two inside upon collecting the bribe, gives you two free rounds of shots and makes you a decent meal of seasoned, buttery bread and steaks with mushrooms.

His place is a renovated tavern of a living space/front room with the side doors being off limits to customers and leads to the rest of his home.

"How issit out there?" he says, looking for gossip, after serving you your food.

Any additional drinks as per PHB. He has bottles of wine and liquor as well. No apparent ale.

Grellik:

Trissae chuckles and puts away the hat from her outfit. As she speaks she is going over her own supplies in her bag. "A bit theatric don't you think Grell? I thought I was the actress. 'Homicidal neighbors'? don't forget just a short few years ago some of our Sharks were 'homicidal somethings' until we were able to bring them into the fold." She says drawing out Sapphire's sword and running a cloth along the blade.

"No it is good that we have them here, and that we do not drive them out. I much prefer to have them close, we likely saved some poor soul's life this night by allowing them to stay here instead of seek refuge through blood at a nearby residence. Plus now they are a convenient smokescreen to keep others away..." She finishes polishing the blade and gazes up at it.

"We will be fine with them, better perhaps than any other neighbor. Who would be more easily blamed for this calamity than followers of a tyrant god?" She chuckles and slides the blade back in its sheath, saying a small prayer as she does so. She then gets up and walks over to Grellik.

"Thanks Bear* but I'll be alright." She says giving Grellik a big hug. She pulls away and looks up at him with a look of concern.

"Do... do you think Adrien meant what he said? Has he.. has he ever talked to you about me? I mean with sincerity. He's always kidded with me in the past, boyish charm... but this time seemed, I dunno." She gazes down at the floor still conflicted some by Adrien's outburst.

Bear* one of Triss's nicknames for Grellik; a play on his race and an actual bear for his noble, large, and warm spirit

Triss only:

As you polish the blade...

Trissae's wis save: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (6) - 1 = 5

Triss & Grell:

Everything Trissae said is accurate but the following.

Instead of sheathing the sword, Trissae leaves out as she talks with Grellik. Eventually he notices that she has apparently decided to leave the blade out for whatever reason, holding it casually against her shoulder, edge pointing toward the bugbear.

Anyone else in there? If no ale, what is there and what are the shots of? All I see on the PHB besides ale is common wine. What prices?

"Frigid and windy as the wife, wet as the mistress," Cavell toasts Ugly and downs his shot. "Speaking of legs, where can a man find some in this s+#@hole? Got daughters?"

Adrien:

AHH! Sorry, I figured they had more choices than that in the book. I'm also unsure why they serve wine by the pitcher. Use the wine prices (2gp for a standard bottle), and liquors are 1sp for a shots worth for common, 6 sp for a shots worth of upper-shelf.

No one else appears to be here. "No clue" the guy says, trying to ignore the comment toward potential daughters with some distaste. Adrien is starting to get the feeling that this latter might be a lost cause during a panicked quarantine.

He returns Trissae's hug, but is taken by surprise at her question. "I...I do not know what Adrian does when he carouses. And I have... difficulty seeking those pleasures, even were I inclined to pursue them in that way, so I have never accompanied him.

As far as talking about you, of course you have come up, though he had said nothing definitive. He often keeps his heart hidden, but it is obvious that the two of you care about each other." Grellik put his hand on Trissae's shoulder. (or perhaps over is more accurate ;P)

Grellik, concerned that either Triss is fragmenting her mind (transferring her feelings of anger and revenge onto the sword), or that there is some magical effect at work. (If you are looking for the rationale, its that its odd for her to speak so openly of violence, that its strange to talk to a sword, and that she ignored his question about it.) A total of a couple of hours pass before Ugly and Adrien return to the safehouse, apparently unmolested. However, Adrien is drunk.

Grellik:

Ugly isn't actually a proper wizard. He knows a few cantrips, and is closer to sorcerer than anything. He can't cast detect magic, but will help you think out what might be going on, arcana wise. Or rather, he'll have you assist him since he's actually proficient in the skill.

Getting Ugly away from the others at some point, you consider Trissae and the sword. Ugly thinks that the terms of Sapphire's death might have imprinted some magical quality onto the blade, or maybe her spirit is somehow possessing it, but he really isn't sure and these are just educated guesses.

"Welcome back boys!", She says with a smile before getting a better look at Adrien. "Oh gods, Adrien, where did you find a place in this mess?" She laughs and checks on him.

She also gives Ugly a half hug and thanks him for watching out for Adrien. After folks have settled in a little she tries to reel in her friends. "Guys, let's start thinking about the next step." to whom ever is near by and listening.

GM:
Oh, I forgot to ask, was any of what Cavell bought available right then, the bottles of wine perhaps? or is that all coming tomorrow?

Cavell comes in with an arm over Ugly's shoulders, singing and jostling the poor fellow. "♪♪His name's Gian't, he won't deny't, He'll cook'n fry't, Just the way we like't!♪♪"

Without warning he kisses Trissae full on the lips, with tongue, then stumbles to his cot and passes out on it, a leg hanging off the edge.

Adrien:

No, you hadn't checked if the wine was available to take out at the time, so everything is just being delivered tomorrow.

Watching Adrien stumble and pass out, Ugly shrugs. "Yes, well. He Had been mostly well-behaved up until now."

Triss's eyes go wide, and while too surprised to dodge the sloppy kiss, she does manage to clench her teeth and turn her head just enough to prevent tongue to mouth contamination. As he stumbles past, she wipes her face and spits. "Gods Adrien, at the very least you could have some decency and drink something that tastes good.", she says annoyed.

She still thanks ugly and hugs him, but instead of trying to corral anybody she follows after Adrien. Seeing him passed out in the bed, she goes over and pulls off his boots, works his leather armor off, and then tucks him in. Fixing his hair a little, she sighs to herself, then heads back out to find the others.

When she finds them

"So Tease left on some errands, he said he needed to get out for a bit. Ugly, do you know where a waterskin is? I have a feeling Adrien might need it when he wakes up." She gives him a sweet smile and then looks over at Grellik.

"What a day huh?" She says exasperatedly as she plops down against the nearest wall.

Woops!

Tease comes back. "Message delivered. We'll see how it goes from here. It's pretty nuts out there, saw a group of dazers chasing after some lone guy. He probably got away from them..."

Grellik is aghast when Adrian kisses Trissae, then lowers his head in the familiar sign of exasperation, hand clutching his face.

After Trissae puts him to bed he mutters to himself. "I cannot believe this...we don't have time to wallow. Does he think he is the only one that pains?"

After Trissae returns he nods, adding, "If only it were through."

"I hope that you are right, Tease, but I am glad that you returned safely in any case. What, pray tell, was the nature of this message, though? Unless of course it is none of my business, and I will be happy to butt out. Though I was wondering if you had any way to get word out of the city? Pardon me if I have asked before. Obviously leaving isn't that simple, but if we could get word out to the Sharks still at our base we might be able to secure more assistance."
