Chapter 3 - Circling Sharks

The storm spins overhead. Lightning crashes, fiery explosions cast red glares in brief bursts over the city. Freezing rain sweeps the streets, and the cities' dazers shamble toward the lightning struck house.

Dissonant whispers seems pretty good.

Rebuilding Ozz with Unearthed Arcana's revised ranger rules.

The first big change I'd like to note is that with favored enemies, not only is there a flat damage bonus, but all humanoids are within a single type. I'm not a big fan of this, but having like 8 different types wasn't good either. I'm going to GM House rule this as Civilized versus Savage humanoids. I know that's sort of a blurred line, but I am going to justify it here:

Bogsharks is pretty small in scope compared with the greater scheme of the world. On the edge of the Savage Frontier, it really is a matter of Civilization versus Savagery. This is not a racial distinction. Ozz isn't good at tracking bullywugs or trolls/giants (if either are humanoid). That isn't his specialty. His focus is in hunting down the things he hates, the civilized races that have hunted him. He doesn't specialize in dealing with the native humanoid threats of evermoores. He's good at hunting down the intruders.

Untgar Barbarians don't get hit with a damage bonus of Ozz attack them, despite being human. He has no hate for them. The humans from Yartar, invading his home and hunting his family on the other hand...

So, I'm going to rule that all humanoids who live under the general "Civilized" category are Ozz's favored enemies. These be the humans from Yartar, the elves from Silverymoon, and any adventurer who calls the vast cities of the great races their home has Ozz's Ire. Orcs, goblins, bullywugs, barbarians, and any adventurers who are on the "Savage" side of things do not.

---

Natural explorer is pretty pimp now, but probably won't come up much outside of the interesting combat perks (advantage on init and first turn attack roles).

---

He's going Hunter Conclave, which keeps his combat abilities pretty much the same, with his horde breaker.

---

All that said.... ROLLIN' FER HP!: 1d10 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5

So this is a thing that could be very cool. The spellbook, for instance is pretty damned handy. (Of course, we'll see how the pricing is when they are out of Beta. If you can still get basic functionality out of a free/cheap version ,then I think it should be pretty good) Whichever you pick, I don't see one that would be a big mistake or anything.

Dissonant whispers could be cool. One thing I will point out about Fear is that its an AoE, but it is a cone shape, so you can aim it, environs be cooperative.

I hadn't looked at this UA yet. They fixed beastmaster! wonderful! Now It will feel like you have an animal companion, not a robot that you can make attack instead of you! :D

Favored enemy i also much nicer. 8? try 80. each race is separate (with no guidance about whether, say, goblinoids is one race, or you need separate entries for each one.). I agree that one is too few, but boy howdy was it messed up before. (and your solution seems pretty good. It at least provides more than one in a fairly rational division)

Look at how pimp the terrain rules are now. They really make rangers an explorers best friend! They can do s*#& without slowing a group down for example. No terrain type limitation anymore

Super cool. I get the idea of specialties, but its also a lot easier if you don't have to keep track of a bunch of different conditional perks and bonuses. Its one of the things that 5E really tried to get away from, so it makes sense for them to rein it in with the revised Ranger

Totally, and as a character concept it makes a certain amount of sense. While having a guide specialized only to the dessert makes sense as something that would exist, having a party with a designated awesome nature guy is only really useful if that person is good in all nature. If you only spend 1/8th of the campaign in a place where the ranger gets their full benefits, it's kinda meh. Favored enemy is one thing, it's got pretty beastly bonuses, but traveling utility?! I'm glad they let them have it all the time

Off topic (kinda) Grey and I already talked, but the lightning scar from the bolt in the alleyway is going to be permanent. Sort of a play on the "sacrifice" theme we just went through. I only bring in case it would affect reactions/responses to Triss from the crew.

Everyone done with their level ups? Adrien, what's new? Grellik?

ah, I posted in the main thread rather than discussion. I took Great Weapon Mastery, because with that I get Great Weapon Mastery and....HP. Rolled a 5, for 7 total. Pretty boring level unless I take a feat, so I begged of on my previous plan of Resilience in WIS, since though effective, WIS saves and +1 on WIS checks is boring, so I went with the thing that gives me extra fun stuff.

Which is an attack as a bonus action if I Crit or drop a foe, and the ability to take a -5 to attack to get a +10 to damage on melee attacks.

It's a super strong feat, especially if you can get advantage from somewhere, maybe a spell

Or with bardic inspiration support

Grey, any idea how high level we might get? Or is it pretty organic?

Yeah, I had that realization upon learning that this was the final act. At least I'm pretty sure I'll get my sexy sexy level 7 :D

I will find it pretty amusing if we don't get to level 8 and I never get resilience, a feat I planned on taking as I was determining my starting stats. :D

I would say 1 or 2 more levels. But depending on how chapter 3 goes, we'll see.

Hmmmm

Cause I just saw that there's an actual duelist archetype in rogue, and if I'd known I woulda went straight for that. Trying to decide if I should nix my latest fighter level in hopes of making it there before the end of the campaign.

AC 14, HP 44/61, Init +5, P.P. 11, S. DC 16, Insp: 1, HD: 6/9, BI: 0/4, 1st (4/4), 2nd (1/3), 3rd (0/3), 4th (0/3), 5th (1/1) Bard (9)

GM rule it!

If I dropped this fighter level and went rogue instead, I'd still need 1 more level up to reach that archetype, which means I might be able to enjoy it before the campaign ends.

If I kept the fighter level I'd need 2 more level-ups of rogue, which might not even happen.

Problem is, lvl 2 rogue isn't anywhere as strong as lvl 5 fighter (Extra attack), and we're about to get into some s+$!.... Hmmm

Is say hold out. 2 levels is probably doable. You're going to want some power for the citadel I think

Aye, I'm pretty sure he has sending scrolls to communicate with you guys (Which allows a response as part of the spell), and also you know the building he is using as a "base" where you can drop of messages if needed.

Psychology of an Elf

"Look Ozz, it's not that elves are aloof and detached... It's all a matter of perspective. Let me explain, so let's just say the other races to elves.... are like pets to humans." Trissae explained.

Ozz's scowl and raised eyebrow demanded clarification.

"No look, so like... Dwarves are like dogs. They smell, they love to dig, but they're also loyal and stoic companions." She says as she gestures towards Giant sitting among Adrien and Mornak in a heated card game.

"And Humans, they're like rabits. Basically all they do is multiply and devour everything around them." She said with a nod.

Ozz's brow shifted and he rubbed in chin in thought, "Wait, how does that explain Half-elves then?"

Triss turns her gaze to Adrien, A victorious smile streaking his face after a won hand of cards. "Some rabits, are handsome..." she replies with a light sigh.

For a moment Ozz ponders and follow's Trissae's gaze, but he scrunches his face in disgust at the thought.

"So what are Orcs then?" He says leaning in toward Triss, a gleam in his eye.

Her attention snaps back to Ozz and she thinks a moment.
"Orcs? are... Wolverines... Yeah wolverines! like Orcs, you don't know how old a wolverine is. They never die of old age, only from brutal conflict... And no matter how badly you want to hug one, you think better of it, because you're pretty sure they'd tear your arm off if you tried." She says confidently.

Ozz sat back in his chair with a satisfied grin. "Damn straight."

Ozz sat there a moment, lost in thought imagining being a wolverine.. or perhaps brutal conflict, it was hard for Trissae to tell. He then snaps from his day dream and looks back to Triss. "What were we talking about?"

Trissae's eyebrow raises in a bemused expression, "How awesome orcs are?"

Ozz leaps up from his chair charged, "YES!" he howls and stomps away confidently. Stopping near the others he flexes and shouts, "WOLVERINE! YEAH!" before he trundles off to his tent.

The others now confused look to Trissae, who shrugs and rolls her eyes.

Whew, sorry for the long pause, guys. I think most of you know that I have been moving. I never expect these things to take as long as they do, what I would expect at first to just be a couple of days without the time, energy, or resources to post, it ends up turning into several, and then several more.

I've had my internet up for several days now, and I'm finding myself the time and energy to start RPing again. Sorry for the lack of explanation earlier.

Hey guys, I had an idea about our current RP speeds.

So, we all know life happens. We can't always post as much as we'd want to, but when we want to, we want to post! I think we're on slightly different rp-paces right now, and I was thinking about a way to accommodate anyone who wanted to go back and forth a bit more often.

Now, this is entirely only a suggestion that isn't very well thought out. I wanted to pitch the concept and refine it together, if it's something people are interested in.

My idea, or the loose skeleton of an idea, is that the party splits inside. With your trust and permission, I will contrive a way that will feel right considering the story, (Fiascos abound, after all) and split the party.

For those wanting to RP more often, we can do quicker back and forward posts. Smaller moments that we go through quickly. For those able to RP slower, we can do posts that travel more ground at a time to try and keep pace between everyone.

Thoughts?

Hmm, what I *want* is to post often and progress with things. what has happened is that I have not found the time or energy to do so. So what I'd like to do is this: I'll restart checking every day and posting as soon as there is something relevant for me to post(I'll make it first priority after I get home from work), barring nights where I have other obligations (which is in general Sundays and every other Sat at this time.)

If I fall behind, then Grey could separate me, so that way Adrien isn't getting bogged down by us slowpokes (since it seems that that is the divide in terms of post regularity)

Is that acceptable?

If not then I will go with whatever works for the fast posters. I don't want to be the one to hamper anyone's enjoyment

AC 14, HP 44/61, Init +5, P.P. 11, S. DC 16, Insp: 1, HD: 6/9, BI: 0/4, 1st (4/4), 2nd (1/3), 3rd (0/3), 4th (0/3), 5th (1/1) Bard (9)

I'm up for whatever helps the party have a good time. I tend to feel like I go over board, then over compensate because I feel bad like I'm posting too much lol.

I'll try to keep posting as well, though you all know I can't do daily these days. Still, I'll give a good attempt to keep things flowing so the times it's me everyone is waiting for are rare.

That said, I want to ask about my pacing as seen by the players. I think I am a bit hesitant to moving scenes forward, wanting to make sure everyone has gotten in all they would like to in a scene before I move things on. I understand that this can come off as really slow sometimes.

Any idea how I can better approach this? Are you guys liking my current style of leaving the pace in the player's hands, or would you like me to drive a scene a bit more, with an eye on zipping along? I'm not really sure what that would look like, but I'm curious for feedback.
