@Ranus: I disagree with your calculations above. I still say this is Round 2, and my grapple was an AoO, as the DM has ruled. I should still get my action in that 2nd round to attempt a pin. I do not have the SRD handy, being at work, and all. We are wasting way too much time on this.

Pin Attempt in Round 2: 1d20 + 7 - 2 ⇒ (1) + 7 - 2 = 6

Male Human Rogue 1/Cleric 2

Rupert snorts. "It wasn't much of a challenge. Jack's an easily-distracted dullard, and Cairn's never been one for cards, or for cheating for that matter. As for One-Eyed Mannfred, well the man's only got one eye! You can't expect him to be the most perceptive individual at the table with a handicap like that. Truthfully, I don't know why he even tries to play Den of Thieves. He should stick to simpler games. Marbles, maybe."

Perception: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20

Noticing how involved Sweet is becoming in the impromptu wrestling match, Rupert slides a hand down to the small of her back and leans over to whisper, "Getting a bit excited, aren't we?" As she reaches for her bow, he chuckles. "Oh come now, I'm hamrless."

The check was to search for indications of hidden weapons or things of unpleasant nature. Wings, tails, chainmail bikini, etc.

EDIT: Uh...are you wearing the backpack, or merely lugging it around with you? I may need to retcon that action...

You feel a mithril chain shirt under her blouse, but no hidden weapons or wings ;P

Whispering to Rupert: Your hand is not bothering me sweety. It is that damn tiefling.

Sweet makes sure her partner's hand is not up to no good.

Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21

Of course, I would feel much softer without this chain shirt on. She adds with a sexy smile.

The backpack would be on the flloor next to her. I am not really planning on attacking unless forced to. I am just RP reaching for it.

male Tiefling Hexcrafter Magus 3

I'm not 100% how far we are apart, I'll take the carefull approach and say 30 ft (seems far to much) to also account for the noise of the fight, should anyone have a problem with that just tell me.

Perception Check DC 17 to hear Sweets whisper: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13

Thiran is completely ignorant to the talk about him and keeps watching Lady Natalia approaching the brawlers.

Male Elf Barbarian(Urban Barbarian/Savage Barbarian) 3rd

"Castieen's the name pal, I wouldn't mess with that one she's the steely serious type." He absently sips from his glass and smiles at Natalia's underlying rage."A bet's a bet though, although perhaps we both misplaced our bets. The lady might take em both out with that dagger she's so proud of."

Male Human Rogue 1/Cleric 2

Rupert's always up to no good, but there are varying degrees of 'no good'. At this point he hasn't made an attempt to harm Sweet, and there was no weapon in his hand. Not sure if that answers the question, though.

For some reason, I'm not so sure she is. This one's probably made of cold iron, by my measure. Rupert makes a throaty sound of amusement. "I think that's for me to judge, and one would have to be a fool to take anyone in this room at their word." He presses a bit more firmly, but not threateningly.

Turning his attention to the tiefling and the woman, Rupert smiles. "I wouldn't be too worried about her, and it appears the Blood Knives agree with my assessment. A woman doesn't dress like that in a place like this if she can't handle herself. Aside from that, she's interrupting the fight. I thought you were enjoying yourself?" Leaning even closer, he whispers, "But I suppose if you've given up on our wager, there are other ways to earn my coin..."

To Rupert: Give up the bet? Sweet chuckles. In case you haven't noticed, my guy is winning!

She leans over and whisper's back If you keep playing your cards right, you can keep your coin.

You answered my question. I was just making sure my health and possessions were still safe. I know you are always partially up to 'no good' ;)

Male Archangel of Awesome Paladin of Badassery 20

As the two warriors tussle and crash about the bar, knocking over a table and breaking a chair, the bartender steps around his bar and walks over to the fight. Whereas before, he appeared as a an unassuming, unkempt human who boarded on the sloppy side what makes its way over to the brawl is something entirely different.

Before you even fully see him, you feel him, as the tempature in the room drops a fair amount to the point of being chilly. Instead of what you all saw before, what appears now is a shadowy drow whose features are blurred and hard to make out as the very darkness of the room seems to cling to him. He's frail looking, almost gaunt and his right arm is skeletal. His eyes are red pin points of light staring out from the shadows around him. He easily picks up both combantants, with surpising strength. He pushes each of you off to opposite sides and stands impassively between you. "Enough of that, yes? There will be no fighting in my bar. Now which of you neanderthas started this? Don't bother lying, I can smell deception a mile away" He says in a voice that sounds hollow and dead.

Female Human (Jadwiga) Witch (Winter Witch)/4

Natalia backs away from the pair, Apparently I am no longer needed to settle down these currs. She resumes her seat at the table and puts the golden dagger on the table in front of her.

Male Half-Orc Fighter/Level 4/HP:36/36 /AC:17 /Init: +2/Perc:+2/HD: 4/4

The drunken dwarf stole my purse, then had the gall to come in here and challenge the whole bar to a wrestling match! If it were not for the eyes being on me for the choosing, I would have sliced him and been done with it.

M Human Soundstriker Bard 2

Al walks over to the card table uneasily shuffling his feet. He shifts his weight from one foot to the next then back again as if he has something to say. He then looks up at Rupert sheepishly.

Sir, did I hear you are the best in the bar at cards. I'd very much like it if you'd teach me. My master is so strict about these sorts of things he'd whip me good if he found out I hadn't delivered this message yet He waves the rolled up paper in his hand a bit then sighs. You are all so interesting though, getting into fights, drinking, playing cards. I wish I could be so great like you guys. So what do you say...will you teach me to play? His eyes light up and his tone gets excited at the end.

bluff(ive played cards a lot and I'm pretty good also pretty much everything I said was a lie)1d20 + 10 ⇒ (8) + 10 = 18

The smile disappears from Sweet's face. For the first time tonight, she realizes how powerful this organization really is. The power in the room is greater than anything she has ever experienced before. She thinks to herself (hoping someone influential in the organization can hear her thoughts)-I have to do whatever it takes to earn the Blood Knives' favor. Do you hear me? I will do whatever it takes.

male Tiefling Hexcrafter Magus 3

I would like to use my Soul Seer racial trait to check him with deathwatch.

Thiran seems to be quite fascinated by the spectacle.
So finally the bartender shows his face or is it another mask? Should he be undead as it seems that would indeed be impressive. Most places I know are even more hostile to them than to the fiendblooded.
As he closely watches the drow his eyes change too. What was only a slight, intangible wrongness now becomes apparent as his pupils seem to grow until the eyes are just two black holes.

Male Archangel of Awesome Paladin of Badassery 20

The bartender is indeed undead

You can all make a Knowledge(Religion) check to try and learn about the bartender.

Knowledge Religion: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18

OK. Thanks.

Male Archangel of Awesome Paladin of Badassery 20

Sweet, you know he's undead.

male Tiefling Hexcrafter Magus 3

As you said all I'll make the check, but note that I'm untrained in Religion meaning that I'm theoretical unable to make a DC above 10 (unless you removed that limit for this check)

Knowledge Religion: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22

Male Archangel of Awesome Paladin of Badassery 20

I will in fact do that just for fun

The bartender is a Lich

male Tiefling Hexcrafter Magus 3

Hmm, I just noticed deathwatch is not dismissable, meaning I should maybe also hold the fluff effect of the black eyes for 30 Minutes. As I'm stuck with it I would also look around the room to see if I notice any other "nonliving" aura

After quickly scanning the whole room Thiran speaks to Castieen, lowering his voice almost to a whisper
"By now I'm quite sure we both placed our bets wrong. That man seems like he's able to kill everyone in here in seconds. We should better tip him nicely."
While he tries to hide it, by now Thiran looks slightly strained, being taken aback by the sudden demonstration of power.
Should he indeed be a member of those Knives and maybe not the only one of such power it poses the question for what they need us.

Male Elf Barbarian(Urban Barbarian/Savage Barbarian) 3rd

Castieen leans forward and places both elbows on the table to hold up a rather fascinated face." Indeed Thiran, that he could, has a hell of a wine stock too." he mutters out matter of factually, never taking his eyes off of the exchange in the middle of the room to notice Thiran's altered appearance. " Jolly good show on that attempted break up doll. Hastened the collection of my winning from good Thiran here." He addresses Natalia smugly but offhandedly, clearly still enthralled by the wicked looking drow as the lady returns to the table.

Female Human (Jadwiga) Witch (Winter Witch)/4

Natalia gives Castieen a cold glance before looking to the bartender with admiration. I may need to find the secrets of lichdom, if only I could achieve all that power and immortality without being so..... dead...

Ranus looks at the lich who just picked him up like a ragdoll, uncertain of what manner of creature it is. He's done pretending to be drunk.

"I started it. Just a friendly competition." He looks across at Ragar, "As for your purse, I don't have it, feel free to search me." Turning back to the bartender, he says. "I was unsure what our potential new masters were looking for, and I figured a display of acting skills, and combat prowess was better than sitting around drinking their liquor for free." He replies to the lich, all slurring gone and his tone respectful. "No offense was intended sir. If you've got a better way for us to demonstrate our worth I'd be happy to hear it."

Ending rage, fatigued for 8 rounds.

Ragar (AOOs and Combat Maneuvers):

I'm fine with the fight being over, but just for your information. You can never start a grapple with an AOO. Doesn't matter the situation.
d20pfsrd.com wrote:
When performing a combat maneuver, you must use an action appropriate to the maneuver you are attempting to perform. While many combat maneuvers can be performed as part of an attack action, full-attack action, or attack of opportunity (in place of a melee attack), others require a specific action.

Now lets look at the grappling section, compared to one of the Combat Maneuvers you can do with an AOO.

d20pfsrd.com wrote:

Disarm

You can attempt to disarm your opponent in place of a melee attack. If you do not have the Improved Disarm feat, or a similar ability, attempting to disarm a foe provokes an attack of opportunity from the target of your maneuver....

You CAN use an AOO to disarm. You could also Sunder, or Trip. Now lets look at Grapple.

d20pfsrd.com wrote:

Grapple

As a standard action, you can attempt to grapple a foe, hindering his combat options. If you do not have Improved Grapple, grab, or a similar ability, attempting to grapple a foe provokes an attack of opportunity from the target of your maneuver....

The only three Combat Maneuvers you can do with an AOO are Disarm, Trip and Sunder. All the others require a standard action.

Here's one thread about it.
Here's another one.

There are plenty more with a quick search of the Rules Questions forum. They all agree with what I've been saying. I grapple you, you get an AOO which you can't use to grapple (because you can't grapple on an AOO) or attack (because you're unarmed). You could try to trip me, which would give me an AOO which I would use to try to Trip you which would give you another AOO, except you already used yours for the round. So at best you could force me to turn my grapple attempt into a trip attempt instead. Not trying to be a d*ck, but just for future reference. Moving on.

Male Halfling Rogue (Sniper) 3

The man who introduced himself as The Darkstalker nearly spits out his drink in surprise when the spindly old dark elf steps between a brawling half-orc and a stubborn dwarf and flat-out ends the fight. This kind of strength from so small a creature was unheard of. The Darkstalker had a gut feeling that magic was to blame, but he wasn't particularly skilled with magic just yet, so all he could do was sit in awe.

The Darkstalker stands up, taking a step towards Tabby, and looks her in the eye.

If Tabby does not attempt to stop The Darkstalker from touching her:

Spoiler:

The Darkstalker wraps one arm around Tabby's waist and yanks her towards him. He whispers as close to her ear as he can get, "How about I buy you a celebratory drink and we take it upstairs to my room for now? Just until things calm down here?"

Male Archangel of Awesome Paladin of Badassery 20

As Darkstalker gets up, he hears a sudden thud and looks down at his chest. Sticking out from it is one of what is now known to be some sort of blood knife. Yet, there is no blood, and he feels no pain. Indeed, he is not hurt at all. Just a dramatic effect, you're totally fine

The barkeep looks to Ranus and those blood red eyes penetrate deeply. "Know that the Blood Knives to not conduct their business in such a rough and tumble fashion. Each of you is being evaluated in ways you couldn't even begin to understand, and you Ranus "Poppa" Bonebreaker have failed."

Male Halfling Rogue (Sniper) 3

The Darkstalker looks down at his chest, then carefully reaches down and pulls the knife out, examining first his chest, and then it. "Well, that's interesting," he mutters, before slipping the knife inside his coat.

Male Half-Orc Fighter/Level 4/HP:36/36 /AC:17 /Init: +2/Perc:+2/HD: 4/4

Ragar nods solemnly at the Bartender who broke up the fight, and his eyes widen at the reprimand given Ranus.

He turns on his heel and heads to the table where Lady Natalia sits.

I applaud your efforts at attempting to break up the brawl, but he had it coming. May I?

He gestures to the empty seat at the table.

My congratulations on you receiving the blood knife, name's Ragar.

HP 35 | AC 16 | Touch 12 | FF 14 | Fort +7 | Ref +5 | Will +2 | Init +4 | Perception +7

Fair enough. Guess knowing the rules is the only crime with a punishment around here. Best of luck to all of you, hope you have a good game! Thanks for the chance to roleplay a bit.

Female Human (Jadwiga) Witch (Winter Witch)/4

Natalia nods and geatures for the brute to sit. "Sit, I am aware of you Ragar. I appreciate the ice wine, not many like to try to satisfy my tastes." She continues to give him a cold blank stare.

Your honestly confused if she was complimenting you, insulting you, or hitting on you, her blank stare gives nothing away.

"It has been an eventful evening. I hope our host makes their last choices soon so that we may conclude this business and move on to better.. oppertunities"

Male Half-Orc Fighter/Level 4/HP:36/36 /AC:17 /Init: +2/Perc:+2/HD: 4/4

I could not agree more. My purse is gone, and I could certainly use some solid work. From where in Golarion due you hail?

Sweet nods at the Darkstalker as if silently congratulating him and also as a show of respect for his abilities.

She then turns to Rupert and sticks out her hand. That will be ten gold mister. She smiles slyly Unless you would rather work off your debt

With that, she gives Rupert a look that says think about it. I'll be right back sweety.

Sweet picks up her bag and walks over to the large Half-Orc. She touches his triceps lightly and says, I knew you were a big un. You won me a bet. What are you drinking?. She places a gold on the bar to pay for the drink.

She looks around Ragar's massive chest and smiles at Lady Natalia.

Female Human (Jadwiga) Witch (Winter Witch)/4

Natalia considers Ragar for a moment before speaking, "Irrisen, but I've been in Absalom for quite a few years." Natalia takes out her purse and removes three gold, she slids it across the table to Ragar.

"If you would be so inclind to purchase me a drink, there is excess there for an ale for yourself, I will take an Irrisen ice wine, the blue stock, not the white." She smiles briefly, but the feature is meerly a mask and is gone quickly.

As Lady Natalia offers the drink, Sweet slides her gold back. It appears your show of strength has impressed more than just one tonight.

Sweet looks at Lady Natalia as if to say I am sorry to interrupt your play

Female Human (Jadwiga) Witch (Winter Witch)/4

Natalia smiles slightly at Sweet's comment, "True strength exists in one's mind, not in ones arm"

Male Archangel of Awesome Paladin of Badassery 20

While I don't know if he'll see this, i'd like to take a moment to defend myself against Ranus. I was torn over who would be the groups muscle/tank, which is part of the reason I'm running this RP session. He seeminly was trying to pick a potential fight with any and all PCs, and caused a rukus in the bar. Knowing the rules or not had nothing to do with my choice. Once that challenge was issued, my mind was more or less made up. He thinks knowing the rules was his downfall, yet it was having to invoke rules and make calls that was the problem.

As Ragar enjoys his drink, the tankard suddenly blurs and becomes a blood knife.

Female Human (Jadwiga) Witch (Winter Witch)/4

Natalia sighs openly, "Looks like I will have to buy you another drink..."

male Tiefling Hexcrafter Magus 3

"Well, seems as you've still won the bet in some way my friend."Thiran produces 10 gold pieces, most of foreign but well known mint."I hope you have no problem with cheliaxian coin as searching my purse for local mint could take some time"
As he sees Ragars tankard changing he has to smirk "It seems they want you working for them and sober to boot."

Male Human Rogue 1/Cleric 2

As the GM, you need make no apologies. You flatly stated that, regardless of the rules, you had made a decision. He continued to quote the rules and argue his case. Whether it was well-intentioned or not doesn't matter; it was poor etiquette. I wouldn't take that situation personally if I were you. His assertion that "knowing the rules is the only crime here" is insulting, bitter, and hilariously accurate in hindsight from an in-game perspective, given where we are.

Knowledge (religion): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13

Rupert turns to address the child that has appeared next to him, instinctively slipping a hand to his purse. All of a sudden, the fight is broken up by the bartender and it's over in a matter of seconds. That was...unforeseen. As Sweet leaves to go schmooze, Rupert calls to the bartender. "I suppose now's a good a time as any for that roast pig."

Male Half-Orc Fighter/Level 4/HP:36/36 /AC:17 /Init: +2/Perc:+2/HD: 4/4

Ragar takes the proferred gold from Lady Natalia, smiles at both ladies and returns with the drinks.

I thank you, Lady Natalia, I hope to be able to repay the debt of your company and drink...

Suddenly his ale turns to the blood knife, cutting off his speech.

Well, then, it appears as if I may get an opportunity to show my thanks in the future as we pursue the opportunities provided. Hopefully, my stong arm and axe will prove useful in the endeavor.

He smiles a broad toothy grin as he examines the knife before tucking it into his belt, constantly fingering the item, lest it be filched like his purse. He turns to Thiran, and nods.

Aye, it appears so...

Female Human (Jadwiga) Witch (Winter Witch)/4

I have an interesting idea for how we can conclude this little discussion RP group before moving on to gameplay, but I would need permission from the GM as well as from each of the people who didn't get choosen and are still paying attention to this thread.

The idea, to set the tone for gameplay, is that the chosen blood knives have to dispose of the individuals who were invited, but not choosen

Male Human Rogue 1/Cleric 2

That's a nifty idea and not without merit, but there's one issue with: not all of us are killers. Unless, of course, 'dispose of' means something other than 'brutally murder'.

Female Human (Jadwiga) Witch (Winter Witch)/4

It means exactly what you think it means, and yes, not all of you are brutal murderers, but some of us are

Male Half-Orc Fighter/Level 4/HP:36/36 /AC:17 /Init: +2/Perc:+2/HD: 4/4

I, of course, love the idea, but I am also willing to bet that the DM has something up his sleeve regarding us being spirited away together as a group once all choices are made.

Male Archangel of Awesome Paladin of Badassery 20

ok now that I am out of work, I can address a few points for sake of ease I'm dropping the ooc tags

The only reason I commented on the Ranus issue was because I didn't want any of you players to think even for a moment I'm that kind of GM. I try to be as fair and flexible as possible, working with my PCs and players as much as I can to make things work.

I can be stubborn, defensive, cranky, etc as can everybody, but I try not to ever get too bad as a GM. I will be the first to admit I'm not the best when it comes to rules, so I can screw up. If such happens I am willing to fix the mess I've made.

Now then, on to the actual topic at hand:

I started this little RP session for a few reasons:

1) I wanted to give my PCs an opporunity to bond. Doing so in your back stories is fine, but its awfully artifical. I didn't want that here, at least not without more organic intereactions.

2) As stated above, I needed to pick my enforcer. To be honest, I was leaning towards Ragar, but only a litle bit. Thus I needed a strong push.

3) I need to deicde on if I'm taking a 6th PC. This is the harder part. 6 can be a little tricky to manage, and could easily be too many.

However there is a lot of good characters here and I wanted to see if any really jumped out at me. While I am still a little uncertain if and who a 6th PC might end up being, I should make up mind tonight.

Which brings me to my final point: what do I do with those not chosen? Killing them off is a decent idea, but a wise man once said "its a little hard to get your hands on somebody if you need him when he's missing his head"...

You all have made great characters and the RP has been spectacular. So I have a few suggestions:

Some of those not picked could become NPCs, played by his or her player.

You can of course stick around as alternatives in case anybody drops out, but that's not much fun..

Another idea is to have you all on standby as specialists, called in when needed.

With any of these I can keep the Tavern open, where you guys can stay and chat, interacting with the PCs either in an IC or OOC capacity, depending on what works for you.

Male Half-Orc Fighter/Level 4/HP:36/36 /AC:17 /Init: +2/Perc:+2/HD: 4/4

Sound reasoning VoA...glad to hear it. For what it is worth, I DM with a similar style. Thanks for the selection...I am looking forward to this one.

Ragar again addresses Lady Natalia.

I too originate from the north. I was born in the Hold of Belkzen, but raised in a town over the border in Ustalav by my human mother. I have not been in Absalom for long, and I welcome any advice on its underworld. I have traveled far, but never to a city as large or grand as this. I imagine that the opportunities are endless.

Female Human (Jadwiga) Witch (Winter Witch)/4

Although I think everyone left after you announced Ragar as our fifth. No one else from outside our five has posted since Sweet this morning

"Irrisen is not a place I would ever suggest visiting unless you have a death wish. I intend to return one day..." Natalia looks to Ragar. "Surviving in the underworld is easy, stay alive and be ready for anything..."

just waiting :)

male Tiefling Hexcrafter Magus 3

Well, I'm still here, theres just not much I see to post about since my betting partner has gone silent right now. That said if you want to dispose of Thiran I'm ok with it but he won't go down without a fight (as long as he notices the attacker at least ...)
