You stand in a great banquet hall, in the depths of Iadara. Tonight is the Festival of Lights, a minor festival celebrated mostly in Kyonin, to the Song of Spheres. This festival is held to commemorate the elves' travel across the stars and everything shines and shimmers, even the buildings throughout the city, normally hidden in fog and plant-life.

The air rings with talk and laughter, and the scent of spiced wine and wildflowers abounds. There are many elves from noble families present, gossiping, flirting and making merry. A large table off to side has a buffet overflowing with fresh fruits and vegetables, venison, hare, pastries, chocolates, and other delicacies not often found in an Elven diet.

A servant walks up to you, bearing a tray of hors d'oeuvres and wine, and asks "How can I help you tonight?" As you pull out your invitation bearing the Queen's personal seal and instructing you to come to the festival tonight their eyes light up. "Ah, one of the Queen's special guests. Please come this way."

The servant quickly leads you to a small table to the side of hall, a mere stone's throw away from a large and elegant throne that looks as though many vines and roots from the surrounding trees decided to take that shape together. You find yourself in the presence of four strangers, all bearing the same letter and seal as yourself. Looking at the group the servant says "The night is young, and Queen Edasseril is not expected to speak for some time yet, so please, make yourselves comfortable and let us know if you need anything."

While a gamble coming to such an unrestricted gathering, a renewed correspondence with the Queen offered a lot of hope. Her suspicions that the letter was a forgery finally abated as she noticed the other four strangers. She put her back to a nearby column sizing them up for a second before offering an honest "What could be better than Iadara with festival?" baiting their allegiances.

In spare moments she will study the surrounding structures of the banquet hall, looking for any weaknesses and other general features.

Maeglin had been more than surprised to receive an invitation from the Queen. It would not do to ignore such a summons, and Maeglin dressed for the occasion. He certainly received some shocked looks, but Maeglin had long since grown accustomed to people's reaction to his appearance.

Maeglin allowed the servant to usher him to the table, and his glance took in the strangers. Bayushi, his Scorpion familiar, was set contentedly in one of the many folds of Maeglin's robes.

An Elven woman asked their odd group a question. Maeglin shrugged.
"Frankly, I'm shocked to be here. I'm not what one would call a social butterfly, nor am I related to any of the gentry. I'm quite interested to learn what the Queen is about."

Maeglin caught the attention of a servant, asking for a glass of wine. Once the servant returned with the libation, Maeglin began asking seemingly innocuous questions, trying to pump the servant for information.

He swallowed several times his eyes darting here in there in wonder, awe, and trepidation. Everyone it seemed was dressed in finery so beautiful he would be afraid to touch it. He wondered how out of place he looked there in his leathers and wooden armor. He ran a hand through his dark green dyed hair. A trio of finery clad young maidens well into their cups and giggling almost collided with him, or he them from their affronted looks had him even more twitching like a rabbit out in moonlight with owls hooting above.

Thankfully a servant corraled him quickly enough.

I dont know about special... He thought to himself as he quietly followed as quickly and quietly as he could. His eyes were drawn to the throne and he jumped a little, when a feminine voice called to him from a nearby column.

He looked behind himself and colored just a moment clearly he was not used to any sorts of large gatherings. "Dry..dryads da..da...dancing under a full moon. "It's...it's very nice. I..I don't get to many lar...large gathering my lady." He managed to mumble out giving her a short awkward bow. He glanced awkwardly at the other male elf there adding a quick bow to him as well...just in case.

The curious smirk on Nilelane's face immediately flat-lined at Corrin's words. She let out a very short "Um.." as her left eyebrow visibly twitched and looked at the others, somewhat baffled, before recomposing "...I was just speaking abstractly. I wasn't actually asking what was better...nevermind, forget it..." Not wanting to hurt his feelings, and sensing perhaps an easy source of information she added as politely as possible "...so...where are you from? It seems we share a common associate...surprisingly..." *taps letter*

"The Fierani forest."

He began simply enough then bit his lip. Of course he was from the forest. He ran a hand through his hair and continued.

"Not fr... from a village I mean, My parents are druids were druids, uh...

Again he frowned clearly the young elf was a little uncomfortable discussing his family.

"I train..trained with the western circle near Ave...Avenarra I had just finished my training really when I recieved the invita..tation."

Do the contents of the invitation contain anything but a "you have been invited by the queen to be here" GM fez?

The hall is extremely large and easily holds the 150 or so occupants. There are several sets of doors leading out to a terrace jutting out from the side of the building where the stars can be observed on this cloudless night. A small sliver of the moon peaks out from behind nearby buildings as though it only wants to observe the festivities.

Nilelane:
The greatest structural weaknesses to this particular room are the doors leading out and several larger windows near the roof, though it appears all have been reinforced with heavier wood frames. From this distance it is impossible to tell, but you suspect it is a minor form of iron wood to ensure the greatest protection of the guests and especially the Queen.

Nothing more about the room, but through your looking around you do spot Celegone, enjoying herself though she looks more attentive than usual with all of the elves around. And looking upwards you were sure you caught sight of some feathery wings but they disappeared as quickly as you saw them.

The servant Maeglin is talking to smiles and shakes her head, "I am sorry about the mystery of these arrangements, but the Queen herself came to ensure each of us knew your faces and to bring you quietly over to this table. She is supposed to speak with everyone soon, and hopefully your questions will be answered then."

The letters are fairly nondescript with their contents, the most remarkable thing about them being the Queen's seal

Anyborthelos strode in, a mix of excitement and awkwardness.

After being seated at the table, he quickly looked at the others at his table. It wasn't that he was uncomfortable, rather he just didn't know how to act. He smoothed his clothing, unused to actually wearing his finest outfit.

"I'm pleased to meet you lot...folks...people."

He coughs into his hand, and tries again.

"Uh...my name is Anyborthelos, and I'm sure I'm pleased to aquaint your making...make your acquaintance...."

His voice trailed off, until it was barely above a whisper.

"...stupid Annie, why don't you think before you talk?"

'You finally make inroads with her Majesty, and this is how you act? Get your house in order, or you'll lose your one shot.' He thought to himself, as his right hand gripped his leg tightly. 'Calm down fool, or at least focus. Remember your exercises!'

He was relieved at least it appeared he was not the only one incredibly nervous. In fact he realized he was even breathing easier.

"It is good to make yo...your acquaintance Anyborthelos, I am called Corrin."

He began with a broad smile once more a hand slide up through his slightly wild green hair. It seemed to be a bit of a nervous habit because he certainly wasnt straightening it up at all.

Nilelane's eyes locked on to her old teacher briefly, and she started looking for an exit from conversation with the young forester "...Western circle you say..." but was interrupted by Anyborthelos. Watching his mouth move with awkward whispered dialogue stunned Nilelane almost as hard as Corrin's introduction. It was then she noticed the utterly bizarre brandishing across Maeglin's face and she began wondering precisely how the hell she landed in this company.

Ultimately she decided, for sanity's sake, to make Celegon's acquaintance. Nilelane waited for a moment when Celegon looked in her direction and gave brief wave trying to invite her over, careful to hide the wave from as many of the visitors as possible (using the column to block their sight, not sleight of hand).

Still to Corrin "Druid? A respectable pursuit, sir." There was no sarcasm in her voice. "I suppose the courier who delivered your letter had quite a time finding you." She then seemed to have an insight and snapped her fingers. "Aha, that must have been your eagle I saw earlier."

After considering Anyborthelos' garb and mannerisms, she spoke to him saying, "Evening. What a comfortable festival this year... Guess what. I have a secret, but not for free: I spent the last festival in much less lavish conditions. Perhaps you would like to pay for that with a secret of your own?"

At the servant's words she rubbed her finger over the Queen's seal. Those words resembled a trap slightly somehow...

Before entering the festival

The streets of Iadara... the ample space enabling the rush of the wind and allowing the sounds to travel far away, especially for those used to listen to them. Toc-toc-toc. The sound of the bottom end of his spear against the polished stones leading the way to the festival. Steps could be heard from time to time and on these occasions Callanniel stopped, waiting for them to pass.

The sound of the festival could now be clearly heard, as well as the overwhelming smell of a hundred different delicacies that he had never tasted. In the distance he could hear Aerya but this was no event for her. He retrieved the invitation once more and passed his fingers along the seal once more, reassuring himself that it was not a forgery. When he was satisfied, he moved once more towards the sound of music and laughs.

As the servant decided to guide him, instead of just pointing, to the table he felt a bit relieved. He was really kind. As he followed the servant Callanniel could hear the sound of the links of his chain shirt... but not any others. Looks like I'm not wearing the appropriated vestment...

At the table

Callanniel is high for an elf with 6 ft. 5 in. and almost 150 lbs. Of grey elven blood, Callanniel has light blond hair and light blue eyes. His skin, instead of fair like many of his kin, is tanned thanks to the many years spent on the sun. His skin is also covered with numerous tattoos, all of them of blue ink and representing many aspects of his life.

As the servant left, Callanniel stopped, moving his head around, "seeing" what he could. "Humm... I can feel the wind in my skin and the sounds from my right somehow vanishes to the left... we are in a balcony probably. There is a woman who trusts her own words, two man probably more nervous than a cornered roe deer and another one..."

Good night, fellow friends... I wish you all a pleasurable night. My name is Callanniel Dars'Mer, from the fringes of our beloved kingdom. He speaks in a low tone, and bows to each one of you, gazing you with his light blue eyes, even if you can see he is not exactly "looking" onto you. He then walks closer to the most nervous of the group. If I heard correctly, you are a druid... Corrin, right? There is no reason to be apprehensive for we are among kin... also, could you do me the favor of describing this festival to me? I have never attended this festivity before.

As he continued to do his best to describe the beauty and wonder of the place his stutter seemed to grow less and less, his shoulders certainly slackened his ease becoming more and more apparent. Their was a moment it came back slightly as he discussed some of the maidens dancing, it was obvious he was young enough that trying to describe how pretty they were made him self concious. But he covered over that quickly by describing the great trees, how the dark color of their bark seemed aglow in the lights, how every face was a bright gleaming smile.

Corrin:
You also manage to catch a glimpse of feathered wings moving to and fro near the ceiling, too fast to see the full bird, but you do know it is a red-shouldered hawk, rather than an eagle as the elf woman at the table suggested.

Callanniel is delighted by Corrin's description of the festival. "Thank you, Corrin. You are very kind and also very attentive." He also notes the change in the elf's confidence as his words become clearer.

He also heard the other elf's tale, even if he decided not to comment. His story was a bit absurd and his voice a bit uncertain so he could not say if he was being honest or not. As the servant arrived and offered wine, Callanniel extended his hand but waited for her to put the glass in his hand. Usually Callanniel avoided alcohol, for their effects would dull his balance and he was already deprived of one of his senses, but this was an especial occasion so only one glass would be appropriate.

"Thank you. Your voice is somehow familiar to me... it resembles the Queen herself but judging by the lack of commotion among my current companions I think you are not her... a relative perhaps?" Callanniel decided to close his eyes now. This was an usual procedure for him... when walking, or around people not aware of his debilitation, he would keep his eyes opened, not to startle those around, but when his condition was already known, his "dead eyes" could be disturbing. In social situations such like this, keeping his eyes closed also gave him a little advantage, for his eyes could not give information to those around him of where he was paying attention.

He was quiet while listening to Anyborthelos' story but was paying rapt attention. Well until the punchline of sorts. He wasnt sure why it would be funny to try and set someone up to date a goat, though he supposed it would be less fun to be a reincarnated goat.

He also preened slightly under the praise of the Callanniel. Pleased to be of some use for the moment. The flittering of the bird caught his eye enough that the familiar voice on an unfamiliar face caught him by surprise. He absently took a sip of the wine in front of him and blinked. Drinking wine was a rare thing for him as well, water was normally all he accepted.

Fr..friend Callanniel is right, your voice holds her... s-s-ound.

He added still watching the ceiling really for the hawk. He wondered if he could tempt it to fly down, and land on his wrist...and he also wondered if that were appropriate.

Nileane listened to Any's explanation in a matter of fact way before chuckling "I asked for it, didn't I? I suppose everything has a practical explanation in the end...still...pretty weird, sir."

After the new servant has answered the others she asks "Excuse me, I don't suppose you could give that elegant lady there a message? Tell her there is a foolish person here insisting hewn stone is superior to masonry for bridges." she winks and motions to Celegon.

Maeglin reclined, at ease in his chair. When Anyborthelos mentioned the wine, Maeglin perked up. He used Prestidigitation to bring a goblet to his hand, then swirled the wine in the glass before sampling its bouquet. Maeglin detected sandalwood, leather, blackberries and earthy notes.. Maeglin sipped the wine appreciatively.
"That it is! A red from southern Kyonin....from Acheimus's vineyard, if I'm not mistaken. Aged for eighty years. You're right, it's exquisite."
Maeglin smiled sheepishly.

"Forgive me: I fear I'm acting a boor. It's just...after my injury I spent a good few years sulking and trying to escape my problems through the bottom of a bottle. I became something of an aficionado, I suppose! Wine like this is quite out of my price range. I got excited."

The servant smiles at Anyborthelos' comment, "Well I'm glad someone at this gathering appreciates the Queen."

At Calleniel and Corrin's words her face reddens a touch, then turns sad, "Oh Calleniel, we had hoped that someone would have been able to repair your eyes at last, but it seems that has not been the case. And Maeglin, we appreciate that you know good wine when you taste it."

Looking at Nilelane she continues, "And while we would not mind passing on your message to Celegon, perhaps it would be more prudent to talk with her yourself as she and several others make their way here now."

Having said this all of you notice a small group of elves moving closer to your table. All of you know the names and faces of the Queen's typical personal retinue, including Shalendras, Celegon, Dergeroth, Soumral, Felaelrel, Dardlara, Izkrael, and Nyranin, who flies down from the ceiling to perch on the servant's shoulder. Maeglin's words sunk deeply into Callanniel's heart. He certainly new the struggle of dealing with a problem without solution... the only exit being accepting it. Callanniel had the same problem, even if he found peace in contemplation instead of a bottle.

At the Queen's words, Callanniel extended his hands, making gestures that indicated for her not to worry about it. "Many have tried but even the powerful healing power of the druids were not up t this task... the wound was more tainted then we formerly anticipated. But worry not for I already got used to this new condition." He was delighted when he discovered that the servant was indeed the Queen... his training was paying of.

He did recall well enough the blind elf's admittance he was blinded, and he inwardly cringed that druids couldnt heal it. He didnt think there wasnt anything that Nature couldnt eventually fix.

M-m-m-m-m-My Li..life for for you m-m Queen. He managed to stutter out no longer able to keep his nervousnous down.

Maeglin regarded the Queen, impressed by the alacrity and skill with which she had cast her spells.

Nilelane:
While all of the elves look enthused, it is difficult to tell their true feelings without being closer

Celegon advances to Nilelane and gives her a quick hug, "It is good to see you again child. After this we must sit down and talk, I haven't seen you in some time."

Shalendras, finished casting her spells gives a small smile and nod to Anyborthelos.

Dergeroth simply strides forward and shakes Maeglin's hand, "Son."

The Queen looks over everyone and a barely noticeable blush climbs paints her face, "Although we had intended to maintain our illusions a bit longer, we, perhaps, should have used magic to disguise our voice rather than attempting to do so naturally."

With these words Dardlara sighs and rubs the bridge of her nose, "Your majesty, I still don't know why you insist on disguising yourself as a servant to mingle with your people."

The Queen frowns slightly and her tone indicates this is an argument she has made many times before and expects to do so again, "Because most of our nobility knows the effects of the Viridian Crown and have taken steps to purchase materials that prevent scrying of any sort. This is one of the only ways we can see what our people truly think of us."

Regarding the group once more, she begins anew in a low voice, "All of you have been summoned here to partake in a task for us, should you choose it. We, sadly, were not responsible for choosing you, instead it was the evil which manifests itself in the Tanglebriar. Some were taken to be killed, some to be initiated, and some for a fate far worse."

Sense Motive DC 15:

The Queen is truly disturbed by all of these, evidenced by the shivering in her form and quiet fire in her voice

"In recent months the Tanglebriar has stepped up its attacks and our ranger forces have been hard-pressed to keep them contained. This has forced us to consider the question of Witchbole once more, and though we do not want to perform a full-on assault we must have more information. We ask that you become a special force for us, investigating the cults of Treerazer and anything they may be planning. As a compromise with the Winter Council and others who wish to assault Shevaroth to reclaim it we would like you to search the non-elven cities first, the Gnome village above Omesta, the open port of Greengold, and half-elven city of Erages."

Sense Motive: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21

Nilelane straightens to attention at the prospect of a job, but the horrors of Treerzaer slowly creep to mind. She had pressed those memories aside but now the link to that perversion was again forcing itself in. As the queen dropped the names of Omesta, Greengold, and Erages her fear turned to resolve. She had antagonized those locations before...she briefly wondered what the queen knew about her recent activities. Everything, likely.

She dropped some polite questions into conversation where appropriate like "What do you think they might be planning? ... Why not assault Sevaroth directly? ... What is the best theory regarding Witchbole? ... What are some facts we have about the cult? ... Is our membership in this force to be a secret?"

Planning..."Since their attack on the City of Thorns they have slowly been getting more and more aggressive pushing on the borders of the Tanglebriar and sending stronger incursions into Fierani proper."

Shevaroth..."Even with the help of the Queen of Thorns, and the monstrous inhabitants of her city, assaulting Shevaroth to retake it in the name of Kyonin will be far too costly and may allow Treerazer to advance the Tanglebriar further into Fierani."

Witchbole..."Unfortunately the best we can hope to do about Witchbole is to gather our strength; it lies too far into the heart of the Tanglebriar and is swarming with Demons, Undead, and Cultists."

Cults..."We do not have much information about the cults. They are insidious and spread like a cancer, gaining momentum in the unlikeliest of places. It is only luck that allowed us to rescue any of you from their clutches in the first place."

Secret..."Because of the nature of your investigations it will be best to keep this force a secret. Should the cults figure out exactly what it is that you are about we shudder to think of what may come of it."

Anyborthelos smiles and nods at Shalendras, genuinely pleased to see her.

He looks back at the Queen, and his attention was fixed upon her face as she spoke. He barely moved at all, save for a slight twitch of his left eyebrow. He watched her closely, and was far too entranced with her to notice how upset she was.

He listens intently, unsure of whether to chime in, or just pay rapt attention. In the end, he chooses the latter.

Maeglin smiled at his father, then harkened to the Queen.
"I understand that we must be kept secret. How secrer, exactly? What I'm asking, specifically, is if we are a group that officially exists. Do we act with your authority and legal protections? Or, if we are forced to combat cultists and come into conflict with local magistrates, will we be on our own? Also, is their any aid that you can render us, either in the form of information or operational funds?"

M-m-my sis-sister is in Greengold, stu...studying sw-s-swords.

He said almost suddenly sounding worried. He had a friend from Omesta too, but that wasnt secondary in a way to his little sister. The idea of the cults frightened him too, for reasons far too personal. He was sure the queen was aware he father was a member whom only had a change of heart at the last moment. It was something he certainly didnt think about.

Th..th.the best predator is the unkno...unknown one, the unseen one. I..I...I'll help no matter what.

He said uncomfortably. Not for his words, no he meant those 100%. He was more uncomfortable because he words might draw looks.

The Queen gives a very sad smile with Maeglin's questions. "We will not be able to make this group official. It saddens us to say that most of your actions will have to be done without our name to back you up, but should you get in any trouble with local magistrates you will have a letter, seemingly nonsensical, that will have our mark upon it, visible only under certain conditions. The magistrate will still have to make a show of punishing you for any crimes you are charged with, but nothing permanent should come of it.

As for information, anything we hear from our channels will be sent to you magically in case we find leads. In addition each of you will be given a weekly salary of 100 gold pieces. If you believe you are able to avoid tainted possessions you may keep salvage from cults or cult members."

Corrin's statement, and the general assenting questions and comments from the others, draws smiles from the Queen's guard and retinue, though some are tight-lipped at best.

Nilelane calculates a moment before asking "How has the cult changed tactically since...I was a captive? She glances at the others briefly for signs of sympathy and continues "I suppose what I am really asking is, what can we expect when facing one of them down in a dark corridor?"

Anyborthelos starts at Nilelane's mention of being a captive of the Cult. Rather than sympathy, his face is a mix of understanding and anger. He spends the next several moments watching the faces of the rest of the group.

Maeglin keeps his face neutral, betraying no emotion. The time for that would come later.
"I cannot speak for the others, but you may consider me your servant, in this, and in all matters. Do you have suggestions as to where we should start, my Queen?"

Callanniel bows to the Queen. "I'm honored to be given such quest, my Queen, and will of course accept it, for I had already vowed it since I was born."

He then changes his attention to his new companions. "As you might have perceived, I lack my vision. This makes my role in the 'investigation' part of our mission will be, unfortunately, limited to the audible spectrum. Despite this fact, I've been training to fight using my other senses and even if this technique is not yet perfected, I consider myself ready to protect you against any physical threat."

With his condition and abilities clearer, he turned once more to the Queen. "My Queen, if it is possible, could a part of this salary be sent to the Billows family? I imagine that 10 gold pieces might be able to provide well enough... If food and general supplies could be sent instead, I'd be even more grateful."

The Queen's normally expressive red eyes turn to hard chips of ruby and her voice takes on a sharper, more vicious quality, "They are fanatical and conniving. They will do their best to turn you around or against one another and stab you in the back. They will offer no quarter, so give none in return."

Maeglin wrote:

"After tonight the investigation will be yours, we will be able to provide you transport to the first city of your choice, from there you will be able to do as you see fit."

The Queen's tone becomes gentle once again, "Of course. Should any of you wish to make similar arrangements for your salary we are more than happy to oblige."

Maeglin nodded.
"My final question is if there is some structure in the city that we may be able to use as a safe house of sorts. We wouldn't need much. Just a few rooms for beds and living essentials. If we are to maintain secrecy, it would be most efficacious if we were able to operate outside of our own homes."

Nilelane startles at the fact that Callanniel is blind, surprised in herself for not considering that detail.

Her last question was "Are there any trustworthy contacts in the 3 cities that might have more detail regarding leads there?"
