Riku hovers around the edge of the party but the situation seems to dire for him to rejoice just yet. As he sees Poseus leaving the festivities he decides to follow.

The thin Alodoan quietly walks up beside Poseus.
"Not in the mood for a party?"

"No, not quite." He says as he sees Riku take up place next to him.

"It's a strange and unfamiliar world to me, the parts in which we venture now. And I'm taking it on myself to free my people out of the clutches of our oldest enemies. It just seems so much and almost impossible to do."

Poseus grins faintly and looks back at Riku.

"Of course I have all of your support with me. That does a lot to ease my mind. If I had to do this all alone I don't think I could have been as clear of mind as I'm now. I would of course try my best, but..."

Male Human (Alodoan) Cleric 3

"It's a daunting task, but I have no doubt we can push through. Even without our support I have no doubt you would have succeeded."

Riku lays a reassuring hand on Poseus's shoulder.

Caorann is positively delighted by both the honor and festivities. She throws herself into the party and drinks far too much wine. Nearly 2 ounces!

Day 10 comes to a end with citizens of Woodbridge moving, begrudgingly, onto the island, and some simple works being begun, while the party in the woods to the south east, make a camp. When Day 11 begins, the Woodbridge community is active, and a nervous energy is beginning to set in as people begin to talk of the possibility of an army of monsters attacking them circulate. Some people of Woodbridge begin to suggest that it is time to abandon the village and make a run for Castletown.

In the morning of the eleventh day, Mina, Dieredon, Poseus, Calex, Caorann and Riku will gather together, check their gear, and make sure they are prepared. A map will be provided (I’m really hoping it will be done by Friday night) that shows the small camp of the Tafganor, most likely that is, and the group will make a march of half a day to the general vicinity, from that point I’ll describe the forces you are up against, the terrain, and the settlement, and then you can plan the rescue of the Gymnaga.

During the night, all of you seem to gain some insight into your recent experiences and when you wake, you seem better suited to the day ahead. See the Discussion thread for details

Day 11, Morning In the woods southeast of Woodbridge

The day begins with little regard for the troubles and tribulation of our heroes. The sun is bright, rising in a cloudless sky, the air is dry and almost warm.

All around the village work is being done to clear debris, and tear down charred buildings. The work is done in silence, the stoic altilyphs going about their work with confidence and determination.

Just as the sun clears the mountains in the south, Bertrius appears at the small camp where Poseus, Dieredon, Calex, Mina, Riku and Caorann are getting ready to depart, checking their gear and packing their things.

The Gymnaga witch gives Poseus a map, it is crude but clear, and then he joins Collin, who is standing with Poseus’ sister and Maldarius, the young Gymnaga boy.

Good luck Poseus, our families are counting on you. When we reach Woodbridge we will tell everyone what has happened here, and where you are headed Bertrius says, and then hugs Poseus tightly

The heroes watch Collin and Bertrius head to the northwest away from the lyph village, for a while and then set out on their own journey.

Just as the group is leaving the village, the lyphs all stop working, turn, and wave, shouting, “Good luck, and good winds behind to all of you, friends of Caorann.”

Following the marks on Bertrius’ map, and obvious signs of a large number of Tafganor passing the same way, Dieredon and Poseus easily lead the group in the south by southeast direction . The forest grows denser, while the hills grow taller and taller.

Finally a small river is found, and the group follows the valley, staying on the high side of the valley to the northwest, taking advantage of the trees, until the small river turns into a small lake in the center of the valley. On a hillside to the southeast you can just see the splashing of water, a natural spring, and beyond this hill the steady climb of the first of the great southern mountains, but to the northeast of the lake, you see tents, and a crude fence made from roughly felled small trees stripped of their limbs but not of the bark, obviously work done hastily.

From the trees on the west side of the lake, you watch the camp. You can see over the fence from this position and it takes all of you to restrain Poseus, as it is clear that the Gymnaga population is held, bound by ropes and chains, to posts driven into the ground in the center of the camp.

At the beginning of the adventure there were 27 gymnaga total in the population of MacNorra House. One boy was killed in the Tafganor raid, an old man (and two infants, from Rosilindeae’s house, the children of Rosilindeae’s new husband’s sister, Dolinerea) were rescued from the fire on the river. Bertrius, Jellika, and Mardalius Colinaria escaped the tafganor– leaving a total of 19 still in captivity. See the discussion thread for more information about the now completely identified Gymnaga population

You can count nineteen Gymnaga in the center of the camp, and it is clear that Rosilindeae is among them.

Around these captives are a dozen large tents, and you can count at least twenty various Tafganor and Sashi-anhain at any given moment, but they tend to go in and come out of the tents with such regularity that it is impossible to tell the exact number of enemies in the camp.

The camp is two hundred feet long and one hundred feet wide. There are two openings in the wall around the camp, one is in a short side of the camp (on the east side), and the other is on a long side of the camp (on the south side, facing the lake). Four Tafganor stand guard at each of the openings in the walls, and they wear armor, hard to tell exactly what it is, and they are armed with long handled axes.

It is late in the afternoon on the 11th day.

Mina spends the morning preparing to cause havoc on a camp... via playing with a skunk, and communing with the spirits around her. After that's done, having woken a little early (she'd gone to bed earlier, as she'd realized when the party was winding down), she returned her focus to the headband. One more day closer. Swapping summon swarm for sickening entanglement!

As they move forward, she waves back to the 'Lyphs... then focuses her attention on her team mates, explaining what she's capable of.

"I'll be able to do a lot in the way of controlling the flow of the creatures today... but I won't be able to use the swarm. What worked with the... bullete... will be less likely to work on unchained creatures. And even less likely to work on them if they have ranged capabilities. Plus there is much to worry about when it comes to swarms and prisoners. As a result, I'll be preparing spells that focus on controlling the battlefield. If the plants are dancing madly... do not go into them. They'll grasp at you at best, or sicken you at worst. I'll be able to protect one of you from physical harm via a spell that allows your skin to turn away blades and I can heal... a little for everyone. Who do you think would be best for the Barkskin effect?"

Riku wakes up at sunrise and goes outside to meditate.

In response to Mina.
"I can do little in the way of combat, potentially stun one for a bit or deal a little damage. I can also give healing should it be needed."

"I have a few magics that might prove useful as well." Calex says, approaching the others while swinging his travel pack into a more comfortable position. "I have a spell that can create a sticky Web-like barrier that we could use to slow any pursuit if we can get the prisoners free. Also, in addition to the Color Spray I used on the land shark, I have another area-effecting magic that creates motes of Glittering Dust that can blind any in its field. Such magics are for multiple targets, however, and don't discriminate between friend or foe. Their use must be carefully planned. But one in particular that could be very useful indeed is an illusion- a Minor Image, if you will, that might provide a distraction allowing us to get the captives free." Calex gives a mischievous grin, and adds "I'd like to see how they react to a taste of their own medicine: I'm thinking an illusion of a land shark in their midst would get their attention, yes?"

Marcus has a very restless night sleep, he tosses and turns a lot. He wakes, not fully rested, but with all that needs to be done, he has a cup of coffee and starts to get working on fortifying the bridge.

He goes to Mr. Mitterson, I want to fortify the bridge. I want to create a series of spikes or similar impediments to hamper the potential enemies. How long would it take to create such a barrier? Also to incorporate thorns or other natural barriers? If I give you the aid of a handful of Gymnaga who know the best natural barriers, as well as one of the Castletown soldiers, can you have it complete by late midday, or the end of the day at the latest.

If so, I will go to one of the Gymnaga leaders

Sir, I require your knowledge of the natural world. Please lend me the aid of three or four of your strongest men to aid Mr. Mitterson in fortifying the bridge with spikes and thorns to deter any potential threat.

After getting the bridge fortification plan in motion, Marcus will head back to the Bread & Board, hearing the chatter of the townsfolk as he goes. He looks at the Oghan's, hace you heard the chatter from the villagers, of abandoning OUR home in fear? Should we, I mean...I would rather die protecting our home than flee and let the invaders take it without a fight. I...I Marcus' thought trails off. He awaits any sort of advice Oscar or Lulu may have.

I have my illusions and sleeps spells. And the Tafganor fear the Lyph. Calex, maybe if we coordinate illusions, we can get them to think there are much more of us than they are. That the Lyphs have come back for revenge. Or we can lure what who we can out into the woods with my Ghost Sound spell.

"Their fear of Lyphs might be very useful, I'd say the illusions of more Lyphs are our best bet, but perhaps combined with that Ghost Sound spell to let them think there are even more hiding in the Woods."

Day 11 The Village of Woodbridge

The carpenter, Mitterson, listens to Marcus explain his ideas, and when the young man is finished he walks toward the bridge, saying

One day, eh Mitterson scratches the back of his neckWe’ll try, but it’s a lot of work. We can put a couple of people to work shaping wood to use in the palisade, and get started on the digging that will need to be done to put the spikes into place, and then, yeah, yeah I think we can get it done. It will be a strong barrier in front of the bridge, one that you can walk through, if you take your time, but one that would prevent a large number of people from charging the bridge all at once. I’ll need sour or even six strong people to get started right away.

Oscar and lulu have their hands full keeping food on the tables at the bread and Board. With the whole population moving onto the island their kitchen is one of the largest and best equipped available to keep bread in the ovens and stews over the fires.

After hearing Marcus express his concern about the future of the village, Lulu speaks up, Where would we go, Castletown? Sure and we could, but it’s a long way through difficult terrain, and with the possibility of spring rain we all could get bogged down in the marshes, unless we cross over to the north side of the river and from what has been said that puts us all right in the path of this army of Tafganor. No, no, maybe if we had had more warning, more time, but it’s too late for escape plans now. If the Tafganor are headed our way, a day or two away, then we have no choice but to stand our ground, defend the island as best we can, and hope we can buy time enough for Patricia to make it back from Castletown with the Alodoans.

Oscar sets a large pot of stew on a long table and begins spreading out numerous bowls and adds to what Lulu said, with a stern expression, Lulu’s right, and don’t forget, from all the stories that have come through this village, the Alodoans are not to be taken lightly. I think if we can hold off until they arrive, the Tafganor will be in for a big surprise.

Day 11 At the Tafganor encampment

Watching the camp for a while the group learns a little more about the place, particularly as the day progresses and the clouds part and the sun shine of a spring day grows brighter

The Tafganor who stand guard at the gates rotate often, with a few of them coming out of tents, shielding their eyes, and covering their heads as best they can, and relieving those who stand at the gates. As soon as the change is completed, the new guards quickly move to the fences and try to stand in the shade of the short palisade like enclosure.

Meanwhile there are a few Sashi-Anhain who move around the prisoners at regular intervals. It seems there are always three or four of the Snake Men, armed with short curved swords and long bows, near the prisoners at all times.

Attacking the camp seems like it might work, particularly if enough distractions can cause confusion among the defenders, but there remains a concern that if someone cannot reach the Gymnaga prisoners quickly enough that they may be in danger

"Poseus." Mina said, still speaking low, "Do you know any of the prisoners? A well-placed grease spell, if any of our companions have it, could free a specific prisoner, who would be more capable of defending, or helping to free his allies. Assuming anyone has access to such a spell."

"My spell can only create a single image, although it can be as large as 20 feet or so, and has just enough sound components to make it seem real- no talking or such, but roars, or weapon or armor clinks or such. So I don't think I could manage a swarm of lyph warriors, for example. It would be too many images for the magic to handle. On the other hand, the range of the spell is impressive- the projection can be placed up to 500 feet away from me, and will last as long as I am able to maintain concentration on it. And even if I lose control, it will still take it a few seconds to fade away."

Poseus nods his head slowly and says "Though it pains me to say it, my parents don't have any real combat skills or magic. So freeing them first doesn't give us an edge. There would be two combat-trainers for the warrior class born, maybe Rosilindeae's attendants know magic, but that I don't know."

Dieredon wrote:

I suggest Poseus and I cross from our curent position, sneak all the way around and approach from the East opening. Of course, Poseus may want to swim there and meet me at the East entrance.

The rest of you should cross at the closest safe point to the South entrance and start the illusions and fireworks from there, or this side of the river, to stay safe. Poseus and I can grab the prisoners and escape to the East. We can circle around and meet you again here.

"I'd agree with Dieredon on this, it sounds like a plan. Though I'd like to add something. When the prisoners are freed we need to get away with them as well. The lake and river might be very helpful to us as swimming comes naturally to Gymnaga. We might escape by swimming to the other side of the lake, we'd still need to move quickly before they catch us, but we'll have a head start at least."

"Very well. If my assumptions based on a single encounter with these people is correct, they have limited vision in the darkness. This means that while they are better able to see than we are, they will still be most vulnerable to stealth at night. If you believe that you can disable the guardsmen nearest the prisoners stealthily, and get them out, then that will be the best solution to minimize casualties. Focus on freeing prisoners that look able to protect their companions, first." the maetaur explained.

"In order to aid your entry, we can utilize the image spell from Calex. If we create an illusion of many ghostly lyphs, we can distract many of the Tafganor. Caorann can aid Calex in this by making the Lyphs cry out in rage and the like. From there, once Dieredon and Poseus have begun to flee, Riku can lay down his wall of fog to guard their retreat, while I coax the vegetation at the southern gate into disabling any who would pursue to the south, while the fog and waters should be enough of a boon to the east, given natural proclivities." She looked to each person in turn, then unhitched her crossbow and Morningstar. "They aren't much, nor are they ideal, but I feel that any weapon we can put into your brother's hands will help to secure things working out the way we wish them to." she stated as she held out the two weapons to Dieredon and Poseus.

Day 11, just past noon At the Tafganor Camp – Attack!

Poseus and Deiredon shake hands all around, and take the few weapons that are offered to them

Don’t forget was was given to you for later!

Dieredon tightens all the straps on his armor, checks his gear, and give Poseus instructions one more time, making sure both men know the signal to begin the attack on the east gate. The elf ranger slips away to the north, and finds a place where the tress are close to the stream before he crosses over. Poseus watches him for as long as he can, and once Dieredon is moving out of sight to the northwest of the camp, Poseus heads toward the east, toward the lake.

The water in the lake is clear and cold, but deep, and Poseus checks his gear, and slides into the water where the grass near the bank is high. He takes three deep breaths and dives below the surface, swimming deep and fast toward the northern shore. When he sees the weeds on the bank coming near he slows his strokes, feeling the burn of the need for air in his lungs, he knows he has probably swum farther underwater in one go than he ever has before in his life.

As soon as Poseus heads for the lake, Caoraan, Riku, Mina, and Calex start walking slowly through the trees, down the hillside toward the stream. They can see the southern gate through the trees, but they stay hidden as they go, moving in short sprints from tree to tree until they are at the water’s edge.

The Southern gate is one hundred to maybe one hundred forty feet from the other side of the river, but there are plenty of trees on the other side. The waters here flow a bit slower than it does downstream from here, and it appears deep, about four feet. Of course this will be no problem for Caorann but the others will have to wade across.

They can decide to begin throwing spells from this location and then cross the river, which is only ten to fifteen feet wide here, or cross and then begin their attacks

Meanwhile, Dieredon makes his way unseen to the tree line just to the east of the east gate. He can clearly see two Tafganor at the gate, and a couple of Sashi-Anhain just beyond the gate, and then further to the west, the group of hostages on the ground.

Dieredon waits and watches the water, until he sees Poseus head come up slowly, just until his eyes are visible.

Poseus surfaces, pauses even though he needs to breathe desperately. He looks left and then right to get his bearings and then rises up high enough to take a deep breath. As soon as he has taken a good breath, he looks to the right of the gate and scans the trees. He doesn’t see Dieredon at first, but then he notices his mentor close to the ground, with a hand on a low growing branch, and he is shaking it gently. Dieredon does it so well that it looks as if the breeze is rustling the leaves, but Poseus knows it is him. Poseus stares at the well hidden form of his friend waiting for the signal.

Dieredon can begin the attack when he is ready. He has surprise, but he should roll Initiative anyway. Poseus will go on Dieredon’s signal, and will also have surprise, his initiative will be set to one number below Dieredon’s. The Tafganor at the gate will go after they notice an attack has begun and their initiative will be set to two numbers below Dieredon’s.

The main group can roll initiative, you will be too far away to benefit from a surprise round, so instead I will give you the first attack in the round, and set the guards initiative to one number below the number rolled by the character that launches the first attack that they will notice. The main group can begin their attack whenever they want, or wait to see what happens when Dieredon and Poseus attack.

It's safe to assume that Mina's Initiative isn't 'on' the list, as she's holding her action. Since she didn't do anything in the first round, she can act whenever is the best time to lay the seeds of destruction. :3

Poseus heads on further towards the east gate and if he reaches it without being spotted he'll peer inside and look around to see where his fellow Gymnaga are being kept.

If I am not mistaken, it is not a gate. The yellow line is not a barrier, just the outer reaches of the camp. Is that accurate, GM Terquem? Can we tell which are the prisoners?

Round 2

Dieredon continues to move quietly NW to -F13.

Stealth: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (14) + 9 = 23
Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 8 = 13

Calex grins at the response the illusions seem to be generating and continues to focus on the spell to draw as many of the camp's inhabitants as possible away from Dieredon & Poseus.

Day 11 At the Tafganor encampment

Initiative Order:
Calex – 23
Dieredon – 20
Riku – 18
Camp - 17
Mina - ?
Caoraan – 10

Round 2…

The yellow line is supposed to be a “make-shift” fence made of rough hewn tree limbs, the bark not even stripped. It is easy to climb over

Will Save: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (17) - 1 = 16

One of the Tafganor running toward the South "gate" (just a wide opening in the crude fence) starts shouting orders at the others

Genak ka, badta, nur Oda pata!

And he shades his eyes with his hands scanning the tree line

Perception: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (17) - 1 = 16

He doesn’t seem to see anything, and he starts slapping the other guards around, and forcing them to “see” that they are being fooled by an illusion, he pushes them out of the camp to form a strong defense south of the southern gate opening.

Meanwhile…

Poseus approaches the fence and looks around it into the camp. He sees several small tents, and a few Tafganor and Sashi-Anhain, all of whom appear to be looking toward the southern gate. He watches Dieredon go over the fence and enter the camp, going northwest around one of the smaller tents. The Elven Ranger moves quietly, and stays low to the ground, moving unseen. Turning his head back toward the west, Poseus sees a small and then a large tent directly to the west of his position, and a small smoldering campfire to the north of the tents, band then another large tent to the northwest of the campfire.

Just to the west of the second large tent he can see several of his village, sitting, their tails coiled around them, with their hands tied to stakes driven into the ground, about 150 feet away.

Mina begins to chant the words to her entangle spell, keeping the spell fresh in her mind, and preparing to unleash it the moment the situation changes in a major way.

Casting a spell; holding it ready in her mind, to release it as a readied action. The condition is 'if the orcs spot her, or any of her allies', so far as she can tell.

Male Human (Alodoan) Cleric 3

Riku will also hold a spell, with the condition being "as soon as the last ally is out the gate".

Calex curses quietly as they see through the illusion. None of his other magics have the range to be effective from his current location. Even his crossbow would be too short from this spot. Still- the plan is for them to distract the orcs, not necessarily defeat them. Calex draws and loads his crossbow.

"If it looks like they are pulling back to the compound, I can throw a light spell on my bolt and fire it to draw them closer. Does that sound good to you?" he quietly asks as he finishes and raises his weapon.

I'll ready my crossbow this round.

round 3…

As Calex readies a crossbow, the Tafganor continue to scan the forest across the river for signs of an attack
Tafganor Perception: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (15) - 1 = 14

While inside the camp, the Tafganor and sashi-anhain stay close to their tents

Sashi-Anhain perception: 1d20 ⇒ 16

There seems to be some confusion in the camp, as two of the Sashi-Anhain move closer toward the prisoners, while at the southern gate, the Tafganor hold their position, not sure what is going on

Huh. I misunderstood the rules. 80 ft is not the range of a crossbow, but its range increment. So with a -4 penalty I COULD hit an orc from this spot at(AG,-29). Well, heck...I'll move over a bit to get a clear shot at the orc at coordinates (K,-10)
Calex attempts to moves stealthily along the water way to a spot with a more clear shot at the Tafganor. Once in position, the young mage pops a shot off at the beast-men, hoping to get a lucky hit, but more importantly to keep their focus on them rather than his other team-mates and their efforts to free the captives.

Stealth: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
Ranged Attack (L.Crossbow): 1d20 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (7) + 4 - 4 = 7
Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 5

Oh GREAT rolls! >face palm< This is gonna go well.

I am sorry, guys, but I am going to politely withdraw from this game. I have become so enamored with the simplicity of 5E that I no longer have the desire to play Pathfinder, or any other edition. This has been a fantastic group and a great journey. Terq, you have done an excellent job. I have enjoyed world-building with all of you. Good luck, and maybe I will see some of you on a 5E PbP!

Poseus creeps closer to the Tafganor in the camp, using the tents in the camp to his advantage.

Double Move, first to D10, then to D4.

He looks to Dieredon for guidance, if he chooses a target he'll attack that one too, else he'll take out one himself.
