Calex steps forward and flicks another of these small, caustic missiles at the Sashi-Ahhain beyond the current melee, but misses, hitting the tree next to its head, leaving a smoking chemical burn on the tree bark, and causing Calex to curse the infidelity of his ancestors in Alodoan.

Exploding out of the foliage above, Caorann zooms over the head of the monster attacking Collin and as she passes overhead she aims another jolt of electricity downward, hitting the monster right on the top of hits head. The shock causes the beast to look up but he is too late and cannot see where the attack came from as Caorann swoops into the trees again. Just then Alomar steps forward stabs the monstrous humanoid in the chest, killing him.

Calex, meanwhile, steps to the side and gets a better sight on the snake-man in the distance. He manages to throw a ball of magical acid right at the enemy, bu the range is more than he bargained for, and the ball drops at the last moment. It still manages to hit the creature, but the damage is minimal.

Dieredon is up! He sees the Tafganor go down to Alomar’s spear. Will he rush the Sashi-Anhain, and deny Poseus his rage?

As nearly every attacker in the glade lays dead, or sleeping, only one Snake-man remains, Poseus charges, his heart filled with anger.
The snake-man sees Poseus coming at him, his eyes filled with the focus of a young man intent on bringing justice to these murderous foes. He throws his bow to the ground and draws a long knife from his belt, and then when Poseus is almost right on top of him he leaps shouting at the top of his lungs

Day 9, Ambush in the woods
Yes the Sashi-Anhain are monstrous humanoids!

As the villain lunges, dagger in hand, at Poseus, the young Gymnaga hunter steadies himself. Poseus drops his shoulders, and lowers his body into a low crouch and then bracing his spear with both hands he meets the Sashi-Anhain with the full impact of all his strength, driving the spear completely through him. The Snake-man sputters an incoherent curse and coughs, only once, before he falls limp to the forest floor, dead.

The battle is over, two Tafganor warriors lie sleeping in the grass still under the effects of Caorann’s spell, but it will not last much longer.

Calex joins the tall elf and glares down at the hapless creatures. "Tie them tight, then, and no need to be gentle. After the slaughter of the gymnaga they do not warrant anything merciful but a swift death for their crimes, but I'll gladly trade their lives for our people's location if we can get it out of them." Calex turns and with a gesture of inclusion, says to Poseus "Alive doesn't need to necessarily mean whole, however."

Caorann flits down to the tafganor with the bracelet, furiously working on untying it from it's wrist.

"They took this from an Altilyph Druid! A leader among the Lyph! They would not part with this willingly. Ask it how they got it! Ask them!"

Sorry. Somehow I missed the update.

"If they must die then kill them and be done with it. If you want to extract information and then kill them you are giving them false hope. Do not play with lives unless you are willing to let others play with yours."

Alomar shrugs

"That decision is yours to make Poseus, your folk suffered by the hands of these."

Day 9, the prisoners

At first Collin drops down on his behind, wipes his brow, and lets out a heavy sigh, but then he quickly gets to his feet and hustles over to where the two sleeping attackers lie.

He watches, and hears Caorann exclaim that she has found something important to her, but he doesn’t really understand what she is talking about.

Alomar:
When Caorann mentions a "Druids Belt" this gets your attention. Every Druid who holds a position of authority has one of these, Cicily doesn't wear hers very often, only on special occasions and ceremonies. it is a symbol of Authority. You would have recognized it, eventually, but it is rather small.

While the others discuss the predicament, he get’s busy tying the hands and feet of the strange men, then says up toward Dieredon

NPC: Alodoan Halfling Rouge/2

I’ve never seen anyone like this before, not here, not back home either. I don’t imagine I know what language they speak. We’re probably going to have to wake them up with something serious, bucket of water, a hard slap. That spell the little one threw sure does the trick, doesn’t it?

"They shouldn't have that Caorann! Druid's belts belong in the hands of the elder druids! If they have that something is very wrong..."

After a while Alomar adds "not to say that them kidnapping the Gymnaga is not wrong off course."

If he speaks with us, we can tie the living up and carry on, if they do not wish to speak we'll drive our point home." Poseus says while he grips his spear in two hands.

"Literally."

Poseus looks on angrily at the two unconscious enemies, tries to compose himself and continues.
"Revenge is good to cool my temper, but finding my family and kin is more important to me."

Poseus points his spear at the Tafganor who is awake the fastest and speaks in Gymnaga to him littered with a few words Sashi-Anhain he has heard the elders use from time to time.

"You have one chance. Else die! Where are my kinsmen? Where are you making camp? Speak or die now."

He says while motioning with his spear on the tied up Tafganor.

Day 9, the prisoners

Collin backs away from the monstrous humans when Dieredon wakes them.

The two wake angry, cursing their bonds, and looking from side to side they begin to realize what has happened to them. One of the creatures turns toward Poseus when he shouts, and the man-beast laughs, then says
Your kinsmen, bah, he spits on the ground,We take them and they are now our slaves. Your snake-man cousins will pay us handsomely for the women-folk of your village, and they can have them, they are too weak for men like us. The others we take into our caves and eat them when we have cooked their flesh in our fires. Now that we are free we will take everything that was taken from us and make the world ours again. Death to all the daylight walkers!

Poseus looks like he's about to lose control and he does...The insolence and barbarism of the Tafganor before him makes him see a red mist in his eyes.

"Death will come to you first monster!" Poseus shouts as he drives the spear through the Tafganor who spoke up.

Day 9, the prisoners

Blood splatters across the face of the last enemy. His face contorts into what can only be called terror, as Poseus turns on him. In a blind panic, babbling in a language no one can understand the bestial-man rolls away from Poseus and desperately tries to squirm away from the spear that is pointing at him. Like some kind of child the once fierce warrior now crawls on his elbows and knees struggling to get away.

He passes too close to Collin, and the Halfling pushes the man with a shove from his boot. The sudden shove is too much for the creature. He rolls onto his back and begins to blubber and below, pleading for his life he says, in common, Don’t kill me, please, don’t kill me, I’ll tell you where they are going, just don’t kill me.

He struggles to get to his knees and with his tied hands he points to the southeast. There is a mountain, half a day still from here, and he has a stronghold there. He controls all of us, and forced all of our chiefs to swear allegiance to him. He has the Hill Giants behind him, and he promised the Sashi-Anhain the woman-folk of the Gymnaga as payment for their help in gaining access to the lost citadel. He needs the Gymnaga priestess to unlock the seal on the great wall that blocks his way to the ancient Tafganor citadel. He is called Lorgrad the Stone Hand. He comes from the south, from the high mountains, and he commands an army of five thousand of our kind. He has rallied the chiefs, the nine tribes are all pledged to him, and he claims he will open the wall and reclaim the citadel, but some do not believe him. Anyone who opposes him is given over to the Hill Giants. He has brought back the old ways, the eating of man-flesh, and the way of war. I don’t want to die today. Let me live, and I will go wherever you send me to warn your villages of his plans, please, don’t kill me.

Thinking quickly, Calex removes some parchment and his writing implements from his gear. He records the prisoner's exact words- including his pleas- then signs it. As he waits for the ink to dry, he turns to the others and quietly says:

"Those numbers would likely overrun Castletown. Woodbridge would not even be a rock in the road to a force like that. They need to be warned, as soon as possible. This creature's offer to warn the village is not to be trusted, of course, but his cowardice might be an attribute we can exploit. Allow me to explain..."

Does a 1/2 day ride to the stronghold place it within the County of Woodbridge or my territory?

We certainly do not have the numbers for a rescue of the prisoners at this moment, but we also cannot afford to wait too long. Scouts from my territory are to be mustering in Woodbridge throughout the next few days, I hope. We should return there immediately to warn the town and get word to Castletown of the threat.

What we do with this scumb is immaterial. Either we kill him now, or I will hold him as a prisoner in Woodbridge.

From where you've already come to, to another half day's walk to the place described is probably just at the boundary to the county (just within most likely, but possibly not, until an accurate survey is preformed it is safe to assume it is within the county of Woodbridge)

Poseus relinguishes his pursuit of the man a slightly and holds his ground, but he still edges closer with his spear held out in front of him.

"So you speak our tongue as well. Good. Then you can tell us more, to start with why were you and your goons waiting here? Were you counting on a search party? Would your war party leave more scouts in the vicinity? What does he hope to find in that ancient citadel? Some artifact perhaps?"

When the Tafgamor answers Poseus turns around to hear Calex and Dieredon's words.

"Killing him would be a swift mercy, I'm not sure he understands what he would go through as a prisoner. Also Calex I like your plan, but he might as well run back to his kin and plead for a remedy there. I don't want him to return with news about us, so I'm with Dieredon on this, kill him or return him to town. As for the rescuing of my kinsmen, I'm not yet ready to give up the chase now, I want to see exactly where they're taken to, so we could make a plan."

Day 9, Woodbridge

Meanwhile, back in Woodbridge…

Marcus finds quiet solitude in the busywork of his father’s shop.

His Father’s shop. Now there was an interesting thought. But was it anymore? Marcus’ father was not a young man, and he had become a father when he was already an old man. Everyone in the village knew that Marcus’ father was a great craftsman, but it was becoming obvious to everyone who knew this that Marcus had surpassed his father in both skill and knowledge.

And still he worked, Marcus, doing the simple jobs the village needed, and always thinking to himself that it was, and always would be, his father’s shop.

The day had begun with so many things out of line. Though Patricia Flaherty had tried to keep the news from getting out, Woodbridge was a small village, and before the sun was setting everyone knew that she intended to leave, everyone knew she was going to Castletown, and everyone knew she intended to ask for the Alodoans to come to protect Woodbridge. Even Marcus, who busied himself in the shop, knew these things by sunset, as many people were coming to Riverside this day, to gather at the Bread and Board, and talk about the future of the village, and wonder if it had a future at all.

The only thing that Marcus didn’t know is that Patricia had been talking. She had been telling people what to do in her absence, and when the pretty elven girl named Kaspeae came by the shop to tell Marcus how she, and her family had been gald to hear the news, the news, was certainly news to Marcus.

The first thing Kaspeae asked, of course was

NPC: F Alodoan/Elven

Are you worried about Alinda? and the question seems to be more difficult for the elven girl to ask than it might be for Marcus to answer.

And then she said,

Everyone is glad that Patricia left you in charge And when Marcus heard that he wasn’t sure he understood, he wasn’t sure he wanted to understand, just what that meant.

male

Back at the Ambush in the Woods…

The Tafganor, if that was what this man creature was, answered Poseus first,

We were searching for some of the Gymnaga who had escaped us. When we stopped to check our maps one of your kind, a witch, and two others escaped by creating a diversion, a fire, and in the confusion they slipped away and were not noticed missing for a while. Our leader, Hudrum, sent two groups out one to the northwest and one to the northeast to try and find them. We found you instead. There is nothing to be found in the citadel, nothing I swear. He, Lorgrad, has made everyone believe that if he can occupy the citadel, then the power of our ancestors will come back to us, and, and , he intends to rule this land and drive all the humans, no matter where they are from, into the sea.

When Caorann swoops down in front of him, he screams, like a frightened child

Aaaaah, a demon, a devil of the wind, please, don’t let it turn me into stone.

When he finally understands her question, he looks nervously at the Sashi-Anhain lying dead on the ground, and then back at Caorann, I do not know where he got that, air demon he stutters out at last, They, they, spoke of a village of demons on a hilltop at the northern end of a valley between the Jagged Top and the Long Tree Mountains. They, they claimed they slaughtered the demons of the village and burned their village to the ground. Maybe this is where it came from.

Suddenly the captive becomes excited, almost hopeful ,and says, Wait, wait, listen to me air demon, listen to me, I know where this hill is, I know the valley they spoke about, I’ve been to the Long tree Mountain, and I know this hill. I can show you where it is, I can take you there if you let me live, if you let me live.

Marcus is busy working. The sound of the hammer and the bellows seem to give Marcus a calm demeanor. He is so focused that he does hear his name at first. After a few more times, he looks up to see who is there. Kaspeae stands there, smiling at him. He wipes his hands on his blacksmith apron and walk over to greet her.

Am I worried about Alinda? What do you mean?

He waits for his question to sink in, it takes a moment for Kaspeae's notion of him being left in charge to sink in. He looks up, obviously caught off guard.

What do you mean 'left me in charge'? What have I been volunteered for?

And then she looks puzzeled for a moment before she asks, I thought you would be worried about Alinda, because, well she looks down, and blushes and goes on to sayI though that, you know, because she obviously likes you, and she is so beautiful, that, well, that you liked her too.

Day 9, on the trail of the Tafganor

The surviving prisoner shakes with fear and is only able to nod his head and mumble, Yes I'll take you to the hill, I'll show you the way.

When Dieredon mentions the citadel, the prisoner shuffles across the ground on his knees and says to him, No, they won't be going to the wall, to the citadel. He doesn't have the way open yet. He is taking the Gymnaga to the Tafganor camp. It is not near the hill. The hill is to the south, southwest, but the camp, Lorgrad's stronghold is in the mountains to the east. I can show you the way to the lyph settlement, and then draw you a map of the camp. You, you won't be able to catch them before they reach the camp, but listen. I know a secret. Lorgrad will not let the Gymnaga be released to the Sashi-Anhain until he is sure the wall can be opened to the citadel, and that is another day to the south from his stronghold. He will take most of his army, and the gymnaga priestess, but leave a small force in the stronghold with the Sashi-Anhain until he knows the citadel is open. From the lyph hill it is half a day to the stronghold, and if you hurry you can get there while Lorgrad is away. I, I don't know how many he will leave, but it will be many, still less than his entire army, maybe you can get in and free your friends, maybe you can't but there is no way you could attack the stronghold while his army is camped there.

Dieredon easily finds the trail of the Tafganor, Sashi-Anhain and Gymnaga prisoners. The Tafganor will lead you to the destroyed Lyph village, if that is what you want to do. The players need to talk to each other here and decide on a course of action.

I guess I can make decisions in leiu of Dieredon's and Calex's other matters at hand. , he says after a brief moment in thought. Although for any concern or issue too large I may try to send word to them somehow, they are still 'here' even if tending to other matters

He looks up to the roof of the shop, he stares at it blankly for near half a minute. He than looks at Kaspeae and smiles, you think Alinda likes me...as more than friends. I have been absorbed in work; helping my father or another villager. I haven't even thought about her in that way, nor do I realky believe you he says with a chuckle of disbelief.

You said I would be worried, what do you mean by that? I saw that her family was not very pleased with her talking to me, but what am I supposed to do about that. Their view is what it is. If I talk to her, she may catch flak from them. Anyways, what brings you to the shop, did you need some tools fixed?, he says trying to politely change the subject.

Calex looks coldly at the crawling prisoner, and turns to address his companions. "It seems we have a choice. We can either trust Patricia to get the help we need to Woodbridge, and hope we can rescue the captives, then return with warning before this army is prepared, risking everything if we are wrong, or abandon our lost to their fate and give warning with the hope that will give us the time to build a defense that will save us. I will say this: I would not have left if I did not trust Patricia to act with the haste we need to call on Castletown, and if we give up now we allow the evil of the old warlords to return. No, Marcus, I meant are you worried about her safety, you know, didn’t you hear? MacNorra house was attacked, by someone or something that nobody knows about. That’s what Dieredon and Calex are trying to find out, and that’s why Patricia went to Castletown, to ask for protection in case the same thing happens here.

When Marcus asks her why she stopped by, she blushes, and puts a hand, absentmindedly, on the back of her neck, and says, I just, I was just on my way to the bread and Board. I was going to see if anyone was in the mood for songs, some music. And I just wanted to say hello, I’m sorry for interrupting your work. You do great work, everything you make is beautiful. I hope someday I can afford to pay you to make something for me. Well, I’ll let you get back to work, bye.

When she walks away, Kaspeae seems to have a bounce in her steps.

Of course I worry Kaspeae, but Dieredon and Calex are better suited to find out what happened. If I go running about in a frenzy, what would others in the village do? I use the shop to keep my mind occupied during the day, and it wanders during the night. I agree that song and some upbeat tempo could be used to lift people's spirits with the recent events. Maybe I will see you there later, but I have a few things left to finish for the day, he walks with her to the door and wishes her a good day and good performance.

Marcus sees the spring in her step, but doesn't find it unusual. He turns back and goes to finish working on his projects for the day.

After his workday is done, he closes up shop and heafs towards the Bread & Board, hoping to catch a hot meal and unwind from the day's work.

I was hoping it would be low...I view him as the work absorbed guy, who sees the world in "numbers" not emotional quantifiables. Can't get lower than a 1 lol

"I do not agree, we are not heroes of old or a strike force. It pains me to leave the Gymnaga in the hands of their capturers, but we should not waste our lives in something we can't succeed at"

Alomar looks at the prisoner "I do not know if we can trust him to speak the truth, but I would like to go to the place of the Lyph, see what we can learn there. We still need to decide what to do with him, I do not like the idea of letting him go alone to Woodbridge, even with your suggestion Calex."

I believe you are mistaken, Alomar. I thought that we could get to the prisoners before they reach a position of severe strength, where a rescue would be futile. We need to act quickly if there is the slightest chance of saving those prisoners now.

I think Dieredon may have missed the part where the prisoner said that you would not be able to catch them before they reached the camp. That doesn't mean that he is telling the truth. He may be lying about that, about the size of the Tafganor force, or anything for that matter. You can follow them, and see where that takes you

True, but I thought that we WOULD catch them before they made it to the stronghold. He did say that the camp was depleted of forces at this time, did he not?

No, he said that the leader of the Tafganor would take his army south of his camp, to the stronghold (the wall), when he has the Gymnaga priestess (that would be Rosilindeae) to use her in some kind of ritual to open the wall, and that this would leave his camp depleted, with a small force of Tafganor to guard the Gymnaga villages so that the Sashi Anhain do not take them all before the wall is opened. What may be confusiong at this time, is that the force that attacked the Gymnaga village was lead by a Tafganor that the prisoner only mentioned in passing, that name was Hundrum - so it could be deduced, if you don't ask directly, that the leader of the Tafganor, Lorgrad is waiting at the camp for the Gymnaga to be brought to him, so that he has the priestess and THEN he will leave for the stronghold. This means it would put Poseus in a difficult situation. You are more likely to rescue the Gynmaga when the army has left for the wall, but they will be taking Rosilindeae with them. Rescuing her then becomes a very serious problem. Does it make sense now, sorry for the confusion
