Okay, we are in a Chase. I find the Chase rules confusing, not least because they've tweaked them slightly every time they've published them. For the purposes of this chase, we will be using the rules as printed here.

  • The boys used their surprise round to get a head start.

  • Carbonel, despite his excellent initiative roll, cannot participate in the chase. Skyreaver can, if Dorn has a way to command him.

  • A PC can also choose not to attempt the chase but to stay with Brinya and the children until they reach the Longhouse.

  • Characters with 20 speeds take -2 penalties on all chase checks.

  • Choose one of the two given checks to attempt as a standard action. If you succeed, you may move to the next card; failure means you must attempt to pass the card again in the next round.

  • You may also choose to attempt both checks as a full-round action to move forward three cards. Fail one check by 5 or less, and you can still move forward one card; fail one by more than five, and you don't move; fail both checks, and you must use another full-round action next turn just to recover.

  • You can also use your standard actions for the usual things like attacking, casting spells, etc., but then you don't move forward that round in the chase.

  • The chase ends when you successfully grapple a fugitive while on the same card as him.

Any other questions, just ask them.

Ah chase rules! - the bane of short characters everywhere :P

Yeah. The first time I encountered chase rules was the one time I ever played a PC in medium armor. It sucked. :P

On the plus side, three of you have 20 ft speed so, except for Alicia, you're all in the same boat. Also, you know, you're chasing school children, so they probably don't have stellar skill checks themselves. :)

    Gnome Wizard (Familiar Adept) 3

I can go one better - namely here.

A halfling oracle with the lame curse - 15ft move speed with all his companions longshanks and lightly armored. Anytime a chase starts it's just a signal to put one's feet up and wave goodbye.

Lol! Man, NOW Alicia is in her element. These kids just bringing out the cranky in her to the nth degree. :)

Lol! I can totally see this. The halfling sits down, kicks back, crosses his feet and simply waves with a smile on his face. That's just greatness. :)

Succeeding at both would allow you to move ahead 2 cards and attempt to cut him off.

Should have said 3 cards. I told you I get these rules mixed up. One of the iterations of Chase rules had 2 cards forward and you had to pass one check from one card and one check from the next, which made more sense. How does bypassing one obstacle twice move you past the next two obstacles as well?

Chase rules mess with my sense of verisimilitude. :P

    Gnome Wizard (Familiar Adept) 3

Yeah the chase thing of attempting two checks on one card to move three doesn't make sense to me either. The modification that I came up with was that each card had two checks - one easy, and one hard.

The easy meant you moved forward one card - the hard meant you moved 'quick' and could attempt a check on the second card in the same round. Avoided the big leap-frog effects and made a bit more sense to me.

Clever modification Mark. I might steal it.
Actually, I might just add 5 to all difficulties for every extra card you want to move. That does cause issues though of how the PC's know whats on the next card. Though, I guess they don't need to know. They just need to know it'll be at +5... or +10 or whatever.

Oops. My bad. "Seek" trick. Not exactly sure how it plays out but whatever it takes to spot him. Unless we CAN see him already.

And if that's the case then never mind. :P

Started to post last night, and couldn't find my DMing stuff that I moved when I was picking up the house a couple of days ago. Will finish the post as soon as I find it and figure out what's in card 5!

Found it. On the bedroom dresser under a pile of clean socks I haven't matched and put in the drawer yet. That's my house. :P

*bump* for Ali. Will post for her later tonight if necessary.

Sorry, but that just trips me out. I promise I'm laughing with you, not AT you. ;D

I'm assuming Marikel has neither sword nor shield in hand to accompany a bunch of kids. It should be strapped to his back, but if he has to carry it in hand (which is a fair call- I know nothing about carrying shields and wearing armour) then he isn't going to drop it- there is a war coming so he won't be leaving it anywhere just yet.

Male Humanly Awesome 'n Totally Rockin' Paladin of Greatness

Dorn has no use for the shield cloak. It's pointless. Well, unless his own shield gets busted.

Outside of that, unless someone else wants it, put it back in the "sell" pile please. Thanks.

    Whoops! Forgot Alicia was up.

It takes a move action to equip a shield so it stands to reason that there must a status where the shield is in a character's possession yet not in a position to be used defensively. In this case, the -2 ACP for having the shield equipped is the difference between success or failure on that roll. (You still get the -2 penalty for having a 20-ft speed in a chase on top of the ACP on the skill check.) You need both hands free to make a climb check anyway.

The Paizo version that made the most sense to me was the one that allowed you to move two cards in a round by succeeding at one check from the first card and one from the second. I suppose they had to add an extra card of movement because it becomes vanishingly difficult ever to catch up if the quarry has a head start.

Then, of course, you deal with the fact that you're contradicting the basic rules of the game by moving 90 feet in a single round, while also dodging obstacles. :P

So... the next few weeks are going to be interesting for me - which will have an affect on my PbP-osity as well. Starting tomorrow our apartment starts to become less inhabited as the movers begin to excise everything. Thankfully I'll keep the interwebs until Friday - but after then things are going to get scratchy from me until I'm firmly ensconced down in Sydney come the end of April.

So please to be keeping patience and whatnot... I'll be as active as I can.

PCs generally don't even make decent human beings, let alone parents. :-)

Looking at the map of Trunau, you guys are on the south side of the wall from that letter K. The two middle towers are the gate towers that control the portcullis; each one has a Patrol person in it. The ballista is on top of the tower to the right, and the tower at the end of the wall to the left is the one that overlooks the Inner Quarter. It is accessible from ground level in the Upper Quarter or by going along the top of the wall from the left gate tower.

Busy Easter weekend. Will plan on posting Sunday afternoon to evening.

Safely in Sydney... but still sorting out interwebs collywobbles

Glad you hear you've arrived, Mark. Check in when you can.

Which way are you going, Alicia? Straight down the middle of the road toward the well, or sneaking around the buildings like before?

    Female Human Rogue 4

    Straight down the middle.

I presume that Marikel may wish to ready an action as well, so I'll wait for Dave to check in before moving forward.

If you ready an action, put your rolls (attack, damage, etc.) behind a spoiler, like Dorn did, if you don't mind. That way you can roll your own dice, and I won't have to look up your stats. Saves me a bit of time when I'm updating the gameplay.

In a holding pattern at the moment - we're still at my wife's dad's place and will be for another couple of weeks... which means we can't set things up quite the way we want to. I'll likely head offshore Japan (work) for 4-5 weeks in about 10 days, then when I get home we'll be at our final place with all our boxes.

Apart from that - all is well. Kids are adjusting well which is good, and we're enjoying everything that Australia has to offer :)

Oleg and Svetlana were also on the original council as Treasurer and Councilor but have since been replaced by Karls cousins Tatiana Medvyed and Vladimir Medvyed respectively.
Jubilost Narthropple was the original Warden but was replaced by Isabella Gargarin, another of Karl's entourage.
Kesten Garess was their Marshal and Akiros Ismort their General. Kesten has been replaced with Gunta Eisenzhan, another of Karl's cousins, whereas Akiros continues to serve as General, and as Yaneshi's protector and lover.
Karl is engaged to his childhood sweetheart, Natasha while Ursula has herself recruited the cunning orphan Tabatha as her apprentice and lover.

So what you're saying is that Karl is slowly replacing the entire council with his friends and relatives in preparation for a sudden coup. ;)

So I have a question for the Aussies. The U.S. academic year runs September to June, with summers off (we are told) because back in the day that's when farming families needed their kids to help work in the fields.

So when does the Australian academic year run? September through May would give you winters off. Do you take off December through February for your summer, or do you have more evenly spaced vacations without a three-month gap to forget half of what you learned the previous year?

He even cleverly got the backing of the other PC's. He took the leadership feat, and I let him make up level appropriate background characters. He then pointed out to the other players that his followers stats were higher than the stats of the NPC council members, and if his followers were placed on the council instead, it would improve their Kingdom stats. They ummed and ahhed but ultimately went for the stat bonuses.
Karl would never backstab them... surely. :-D
(To be fair, he hasn't advised me of any plans to do so yet. But we've been friends for many years, so I think he knows I'll let him get away with it. However, I think he's happy to just be in the position to do so.)

Our school year runs from late January to early December, aligning with the calendar year.
Our holidays are 6 weeks over December/January and three lots of 2 week holidays evenly spaced throughout the year to create four 10 week terms.

As one of the younger countries on Earth we abandoned a lot of traditions for a more common sense approach. Of course, we still kept a lot of dumb and inappropriate traditions, some which are even dumber living on the hottest, driest, continent on Earth, in the southern hemisphere, where seasons are reversed to the rest of the 'civilised' world. :-)

My first attempt, many years ago, fell apart one session before finishing the first book. They'd even defeated the Stag Lord and were going to explore the last two hexes and return to town to claim their reward next session.

    Which never came.

Ansha would be great to game with. Maybe next time I'm in America. :-)

Man we had a good, solid group. Those were some fun times.

My favourite hangover from the Colonial days has to be long service leave - which was originally set up for workers to take a decent break so that they could travel a ship back to the old country. You work for the same company for 10 years in a row and you get an extra 2 months holiday (on top of your usual four weeks a year).

I thought the Spiritual Weapon would follow the orc too, but reading up on the spell, it says it returns to me if it leaves my sight.
I'm happy to let that happen as I figure I'll have a spare move action next turn to redirect it.

And, as you're the GM, I'm also very happy if you decide that's a dumb rule and it does follow the previous target. In which case...

    spiritual weapon: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
    damage: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6

...it doesn't really make much difference. :-/

I was looking for "line of sight" in the spell description, and all I saw was "Range medium (100 ft. + 10 ft./level)." :P

But, yep, there it is: last line of the first paragraph. Add another situation where darkness/obscuring mist/walking around the corner comes in handy.

Just for clarity's sake, I will always be using Tiger aspect on Skyreaver until further notice in game.

I think I may have mentioned this before but I'm not sure. So just to be on the safe side - and seeing how I was reminded of it with Dorn using an Animal Aspect - I figured I should mention it just in case I haven't mentioned it previously.
