The Avalon Chronicles

Game Master lynora

This is a high level rules light game set in a school for magical kids, kinda a mash-up of Soul Eater, Harry Potter, and X-Men. :)

Male Human (Mole Zoanthrope) 16 Monk/Ninja

"Umm excuse me, Tyrrin, Jiminy, before you get started...Nala is not with Mountain or Forest, is she by chance on the Island?"

Male Half fiend/half giant 16 Gunslinger (pistolero)/16 Barbarian (Brutal Pugilist)

With nothing else to do, pulls out a toolbelt and some metal ingots and begins to fashion a small pistol for his rat buddy...

Soars about, looking for trouble...

Roland gives Jiminy two thumbs up and then teleports to the Desert.

"Hello out there!" He calls across the sands. "I come in peace, anyone here?"

Male Kobold (Young Adult Black dragon) Gestalt Sorceror/Oracle 16 Necromancer; Champion of Death

Krays swoops down an lands a couple yards away from Roland.
"Hello, Roland. Follow me please?" he says in an even tone, and guides him to the castle.

Female Elf Gestalt Sorcerer (Starsoul) 16/Oracle (Heavens) 16

I honestly can't remember if Ryuzo and Tyrrin have ever interacted, but a quick search on both aliases post histories didn't show anything, so I assume no.

Forest

Tyrrin glanced at Ryuzo. Nala's lover perhaps? "Yes, Nala is one of the generals of the Island nation, as it were."

Tyrrin takes a seat at the impromptu negotiation table, across from the elder Amethyst, quitely arranging herself (hair, clothing, etc). "If we might speak candidly for a moment," Tyrrin erected a specialized silence spell around the pair, allowing them to speak without interruption. "You and I both know the real reason why the Headmaster wants to prepare the students for War. While I abhor the thought of unecessary violence, do you think coddling the students by ending the game early will serve anyone in the long run?"

Image

Jiminy laughed. "You don't know my uncle very well, do you? What makes you think the game will end early?" He leaned back in his chair and rested his feet on the table. "I think there are more surprises in store. The kind we'll only be able to face if we work together. One of those times to literally hammer important life lessons into us, like the enemy of my enemy is my friend," he added with a wink.

"Of Course!" Roland cheerfully replies and follows Krays.

Desert

Laying on the sand and soaking in the sunshine was helping. But she had just plain run out of energy. All she wanted to do was sleep. She blinked as a shadow passed over. Oh, just Krays. And then she blinked again as a second shadow passed over. Hmm. Interesting. She sighed and dragged herself upright. Time to get back to the others. Looked like there would be business to take care of. She yawned.

Smiles and nods, then leaves Jiminy and Tyrrin alone.

Leads Roland into the castle, and up to Fei.
"We have a visitor from one of the other kingdoms." he says, indicating Roland.

With Dalesman out of commission it's best I think if we don't wait for a response from Fei. His whole strategy has been to avoid fighting with peers, so we already know he'll agree to the alliance.

Works for me :)

Image

Fieri leaned against the side of the building, panting and out of breath. She tried to smile when she saw Roland and Fei coming out of the command tent, but she couldn't quite manage it. She swayed unsteadily before sliding to the ground.

Image

"Hey! Excuse me! Misters whose names I don't know, you need to help that girl. What's wrong with her? She's a firebird isn't she? You need to give her some fire. That will fix it no matter what's wrong. I...I guess I could," she said reluctantly, "but I think it would be better if someone else did."

Roland rushes to Fieri’s side and kneels next to her.

“Are you alright?” He exclaims, taking her hand gently in his and checking her pulse by placing his other hand on her wrist.

He looks back at Ignace. “You say she needs fire?” He asks, concern written on his face. Turning back to Fieri he does what he can in the interim by casting a Heal spell-like ability followed by a Greater Restoration.

Image

Ignace sighed dramatically. "She's a firebird, duh. Fire is like the best healing potion ever to a firebird. It can't hurt her. Only help."

Image

"Roland?" Fieri asks, a little out of it still. The healing doesn't seem to do anything, but the Greater Restoration helps and her eyes are looking a lot less glazed. "Er, yeah, the kid here is right. Fire is good for a firebird. I thought the hot sun would be enough, but I was wrong and I pushed myself too far. I'm starting to think maybe Pheebs doesn't have it so bad. Sure there's the vomiting, but at least she can stay awake...and now I'm whining. Sorry."

Female Elf Gestalt Sorcerer (Starsoul) 16/Oracle (Heavens) 16

"He might simulate our fears for us, is what you mean?" Tyrrin pursed her lips. If Jiminy was right, this was going to take a turn for the dire very quickly. "Well, if that's the case," Tyrrin was trying not to let her concern show on her face, remaining cool - almost offhanded. "what are we waiting for? What terms for the alliance do you propose? Annexation?"

Image

"Well as things stand now I'm sharing leadership with Kor. He takes care of the social stuff while I handle overall strategy. I think we can expand that. Like having several governors all answerable to a president. And no that doesn't have to be me. I think we should decide as a group who should lead."

Imagefemale weredragon (amethyst) gestalt Soulknife16/oracle10/divine gunslinger6

"It's probably better that the leader not be a dragon. Something about symbolism and all that crap," she said and chuckled when James jumped. "Oh, come on, James. You should know by now that I have this habit of turning up uninvited at inconvenient moments," she said with a wink.

She pulled up a stool and sat down. "So I did my very best to keep the aschen away from the workings for this and it was mostly successful since this was mostly made with magic. But there is the slightest, by which I mean this is what happened, possibility that Uncle Ryo convinced them to help him with the 'surprise' that's coming. And I figured I should warn you. They probably seem cute and all since mostly you just see them hanging around drooling at the coffeemaker, but they are devil/demon/things. The point of all of this being, it's probably going to be a bumpy ride, and I thought you'd want to know. I had a very guilty semi-confession just a couple of minutes ago. I would have told you sooner but they'd been avoiding me. I thought it was about the coffee. I really need to remember to keep better track of them."

Avalon

Ori was slightly afraid that she was going to start a book avalanche if she moved too suddenly. She had quite a stack of books around her. Thus far none of them had been helpful. There were apparently not a lot of examples of idiots like her accidentally binding themselves to angry nature spirits. And by not a lot she so far meant none. Really. Of all the things to turn out to be excellent at she had to pick idiocy. There was always so much competition in that field, it was hard to actually distinguish oneself as a truly special idiot. She picked another book out of pile and started looking through it some more.

Roland gives Fieri a wide, relieved smile. “It’s all good, I’m just glad you are alright. How are you doing? Is there anything I can do for you?” He inquires.

*Boing*

A middle-aged kobold rides atop a large slurk, bouncing down the path through Avalon's neighbouring forest toward the school. The kobold is covered in slurk slime, and has a few acid burns. He is wearing a large straw hat.

Vakkler tips the hat up as he dismounts, and looks over what he has come to regard as home.

The weather brought by the inversion of Agartha has not been kind to his already rather ramshackle hut. Part of the thatch roof has blown away, and a hornet's nest hangs over the door.

He leads the slurk alongside him toward the familiar gates.

"Alright, let's see what mess they've gotten into."

"I don't have any inherent fire abilities but I can try this." Roland continues.

He uses his limited wish ability to dose Fieri is blazing flames until she seems at least somewhat rejuvenated.

"Did that help at all?" He asks.

"Mmmm. Yeah, that helps a lot. Thanks. I need lots of energy these days and since I can't eat enough for a medium sized army I get worn out really fast if I don't get fire regularly."

Image

"My little sister is like that. She has a condition. Are you sick too?" she asked, somewhat rudely.

Image

"Huh? Er, no. I'm not sick." She blushed. "I'm, er, expecting. Apparently that takes a lot of energy. Especially for quadruplets. Ummm.....who are you? I don't think I've seen you before...."

Image

Ignace curtsied. "My name is Ignace. Pleased to meet you."

Upon hearing Fieri’s news Roland’s eyebrows shoot up in pleased surprise. “That’s great, congratulations!” He declares. “Are you excited?”

Image

Fieri shrugged. "Excited. Nervous. Terrified. In my case usually exhausted. You've seen how the Sunwake kids eat. Well, apparently baby dragons need a lot of sustenance too, and since I can't eat like Ephebe does, I need lots and lots of fire so the kids can get the energy they need to grow."

“Children are such a blessing.” Roland replies, nodding and grinning widely. “I think you’ll find that every sacrifice you make for them and every discomfort you suffer for their sake is worth it tens times over so that they can grow up big and strong. Safe, in the knowledge that they are loved.”

A strange pained look momentarily crosses the idle perfection of Roland’s face, his forehead creases and he gains a tightness around his eyes. A deep sadness lingers that starts to dissipate only slowly.

Image

"Well, that's a lot of the reason that the dragons at this school decided to reveal themselves now. There's some interesting wishcraft involved. But there's going to be a whole lot of baby dragons running around here in the not-as-distant-as-we'd-planned-on future, and they should get to grow up without having to hide and be afraid all the time like their parents were. That's pretty much the gist of it. Jiminy, Ephebe, and Taron can all wax more eloquent on the subject since they're the ones who grew up like that. "

"I'm guessing that look means your childhood was perhaps as happy as mine? My mom never wasted an opportunity to tell me she didn't want me."

“Yes…my childhood was interesting to say the least…but…”

“I have a son.” He confesses suddenly, apropos of nothing. “A little boy. Circumstance has taken him from me.”

Roland turns his head and looks off into the distance, his eyes blind to the sights of the physical world as the potent images of nostalgic memory fill his thoughts.

“He is doing well, but I can’t see him…and…sometimes that feels like more than I can bear.” Roland looks back to Fieri, his normally cheerful and bright eyes seeming as deep wells of anguish at that moment. “Of all the roles I have almost taken on as an adventurer and planewalker ‘Dad’ is the one I wish I hadn’t missed out on.”

Image

"Roland, I'm so sorry," she said, sympathetic. "I can't even imagine what that must be like."

"I don't want to pry, and I can see that this is painful for you, but....if you wouldn't mind I...there's some questions I'd like to ask you. It's....I got this letter. That's really why I was out in the desert in the first place and not near someone who could help me with fire spells. I just needed some time alone to think. It's...it's from my dad. I've never even spoken to him. I...think you might be able to help me understand. But I won't press if it's just too painful to talk about."

Roland gives Fieri a faint smile. “I know we haven’t known each other long, but you are the best friend I have on this world. Go for it, I’m happy to help if I can.”

Image

"I'm not sure where to start. Do you ever check up on him to make sure he's okay? What would you say to him if you could about why you left? Or about anything....do you not contact him for his own good? I'm just....I want to understand. I always thought that my dad didn't talk to me because he didn't want me, just like my mom except she talked more than she should have. The one thing I was always sure of was that my parents didn't love me. They didn't choose to have me. It was forced. But now....the letter from my dad says that even though he didn't choose to have me, he still loved me and that the reason that he didn't speak to me was because my grandfather threatened to hurt me if he did. A few months ago I never would have believed that, but I've gotten to see my grandfather's unpleasant side since then, and it's pretty credible. I just...I don't know. I'm trying to wrap my head around a completely new set of facts....I thought maybe hearing things from your perspective might help me understand his a little better."

“My perspective…” Roland begins. “Here is how it happened…”

“My child’s mother is a powerful sorceress with whom I had a brief, passionate, and rather turbulent romantic affair with. Unknown to me until awhile after we broke it off we had conceived a child together. Her Destined bloodline and my potent angelic blood created a boy who is of great interest to many Powers in the multiverse whom would seek to control him. His mother came to me after he was born to tell me she was taking him into hiding to raise him, but that, while she could conceal herself and our child I must avoid them at all costs because of how easily traceable my energies are to someone who knows how to look and if I came to them on a regular basis I would in all likelihood lead any pursuers right to them, even if I concealed myself in powerful anti-divination spells.”

Roland takes a deep breath then lets it out slowly. “I got to hold my son exactly one time, I don’t know if I believed in love at first sight before that but I do now. He was so perfect, so fragile and yet so strong. He was…my son.”

“His mother made me swear to never seek them out, and I agreed, as hard to choke out the words as it was. Once a year she sends me a small sign to show me that they are alive and safe and when I see that sign…”

Roland is utterly silent and still for a long moment. “Sometimes I wonder why it was necessary for her to come to me. We were done with each other and I didn’t know about the pregnancy. She could have vanished off the face of the earth with my son and I would have never been the wiser. But instead she came to me, and let me hold him, if just that once….I love her for that.”

A single, crystal clear tear slowly makes its way down Roland’s left cheek.

“And I think I hate her a little bit for it too.”

Image

"Wow. That's....I guess I get that. Both the greatest gift and worst punishment all at once. I'm sorry, Roland. I hope that someday things change and you can see him again. And really, thank you for sharing that with me. It does help me understand my dad better," she said, patting him on the back in an attempt to be conforting.

Male Kobold (Young Adult Black dragon) Gestalt Sorceror/Oracle 16 Necromancer; Champion of Death

Pokes his head in...
"Fieri, I'm going to go back out on patrol, if everything is ok in here?" He pauses "Which kingdom are you from Roland?"

Male Human Gestalt Inquisitor/Dragon Knight 16

Pokes his head in as well
"I'm to understand we have a visitor?"

Male Kobold Expert 6/Rogue 4/Fighter 3

Vakkler stands at the school doors. He turns to the slurk. "Stay."
He glances back. "I'm half expecting some new arrival to show up looking to be led to the Headmaster. I suppose I'm that new arrival now. They better not have moved the office."
He opens the door and steps into the hallways.

Image

The sound of high heels clicking against stone can be heard ringing through the empty hallway.

"Ah. Good afternoon, Vakkler. It's good to see you back. Enjoy the peace and quiet while you can. The mon- I mean children are in some sort of extracurricular activity at the moment. The headmaster is busy supervising it. Oh, and watch out for a roving band of small children. Apparently we're starting an elementary school division, but it isn't ready yet so the young ones are roaming the halls. Actually I think at present they're roaming the gardens, but you never know when they'll come back inside."

"Ah. Krays, Ghalen, hey. Umm, Roland was just talking to Fei I think. I'm actually not sure what kingdom. We were talking about some other stuff not related to the current games, actually."

Image

As soon as she saw Krays Ignace did her best to hide in the corner. Well, it wasn't like the others remembered she was here either so hopefully the big scary dragon wouldn't notice her.

Vakkler clicks his tongue. "An elementary school? The ones we have are immature as it is. Bah."

The gamekeeper closes the door behind him. "Ms. Jones. It has been a while. Weeks? Months? It's difficult to keep track of time in the tunnels."
He pauses, frowning. "I haven't been fired, have I?"

Roland is silent for a moment then straightens his back and rolls his shoulders as if divesting himself of an immensely heavy burden.

He turns to Fieri and smiles. “Maybe one day we can both be with the person we miss…here is hoping.”

Roland then addresses the Desert players.

“Hey, I’m on the Forest Kingdom team. Jiminy is working to get all the kingdoms to unite instead of fighting for whatever may come next in this test, so he sent me here to see if we could join forces.”

"Not that I've heard. We were told that you had gone on a short sabbatical. Well, it's not as if you were the first teacher at this school to require a mental health break. You haven't been gone long. Two or three weeks. Actually your students will be happy to see you back. Ryleh has been teaching your class in your absence. I do really have to admire the sheer terror she can inspire in even the most rebellious student."

Krays chuckles
"I'm not going to bite you, little one." he takes his kobold form.
"Better?"
He looks at Roland.
"Peace can be a worthy goal. I was just curious, though, if Ephebe Blackscale was in the Forest kingdom? I'd very much like to know how she is..."
