The Avalon Chronicles

Game Master lynora

This is a high level rules light game set in a school for magical kids, kinda a mash-up of Soul Eater, Harry Potter, and X-Men. :)

Uhhh.... Not a clue.

Male Human (Mole Zoanthrope) 16 Monk/Ninja

"Nope."

Male Quasit (Demon) Gestalt Vitalist/Psion(Telepath) 16

Phaeze turns to the table with Vai on it, looking for some way to release her.

Perception (search): 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11.

Male Half-Elf

"Why do I have the feeling we're going to find out?" Michael asks as some more of the students start to show up.

"Because now that all of you are here, I can explain how Advanced P.E is going to work today." A halfling woman dressed in stained and weathered gardening clothes says as she steps out of the vegetation. "For those of you who do not know who I am, I am Professor Adsila Agave. Since I'm filling in today for Professor Sunwake, and I can't throw rocks around like she can, you are going to be looking for one of four potted plants placed somewhere in this garden. You can team up or try to find one alone. Any questions?" She asks with a smile.

Male Kobold Expert 6/Slayer 8

I am never going near the gymnasium ever ever again.

Female Cat, Common SoulKnife 16//Paladin 6 (Divine Defender)/Pyrokineticist 10

After finishing a discussion with Professor Keaton about her schedule, Jen quickly scampers along to stop by her new room, just to see how it looked. It seems pretty standard, with a bed on the side and bare necessities, but on the bed was a small grey gem.

She looks around to see who had left it, but somehow she instinctively knew already. As she approached it, the gem moves its way to Jen's collar.

The clock was ticking towards first period and in order to make a good first impression, Jen hurries out of her room and asks the school to point her towards the classroom for Agarthian Military History. This time though, she isn't carrying anything of significant bulk and leaps through the hallways with great agility, bouncing off the support structures and the walls to avoid incoming traffic.

She finds an empty seat and perches herself on the desk, attempting to look proper and tidy to make a good impression on this "Professor Vakkler Person". Seeing as all the people of importance have thus far been tall and imposing humanoids, Jen scans the view for anyone that resembles that.

The Half-Alive Streets | Truth of the Seeker | The Sanctuary of Drowned Delight

The Vai-clones continue half-heartedly attacking the group, some go over to the fallen Great Wyrm, whimpering and stroking their now-defunct Master.

Phaeze can't seem to find a way to release the bonds, but he can see that they are formed of some sort of magical energy.

They are in the gardens right now, not the gymnasium. You're still safe inside.

Kitty raised her hand. "Professor Agave? Ummm...how do we recognize which are the correct potted plants?"

Not to be disrespectful, but this seems a bit boring. Are you sure this is going to be challenging enough?

"James, run an analysis on those things holding Vai down. Fieri, help me round up the rest of these....these.....ugh. I don't know what to call them. I don't even know if their minds can be restored," she said frowning at the creatures whimpering over the unconscious blue.

The Half-Alive Streets | Truth of the Seeker | The Sanctuary of Drowned Delight

Probably not. They were experiments to try and replicate Vai's powers, all failed. Their minds are too far gone to help.

Ryleh uses teeth and claws to put the creatures out of their misery.

::Sometimes mercy means doing the messy jobs,:: she said, sadly.

"An excellent question, since I put some fakes around the garden as a trick. You are looking for a red flower with blue stripes on the petals."

"Jim" Rivets wrote:

"You know, I think you're right. A scavenger hunt seems a little... juvenile." Professor Agave admits. Then she claps her hands together as if she's had an idea. "That's it! Such a simple solution!"

She waves her hand at one of the larger trees in the garden and a branch shoots down to snatch up an unwary student.

"Did I forget to mention the plants in this garden will hinder you every step of the way? Don't hurt them though, they can be very temperamental and this bright new sun has made them very energetic. Don't worry though, my friends know not to hurt students. Badly."

Male Quasit (Demon) Gestalt Vitalist/Psion(Telepath) 16

To just Ryleh ::With all due respect to a person who seems to me to be a psychic giant, with a little time and some psychic surgery, I could have restored them. Please, do not be so hasty to offer the merciful death-blow in the future. I am a telepath by calling and have some knowledge of how the mind works.::

The Half-Alive Streets | Truth of the Seeker | The Sanctuary of Drowned Delight

James' quick analysis reveals that the bonds are a type of anti-magic field, which prevent any magic from directly affecting the captive, and also preventing the use of magical abilities by the captive. James Also notes that there are a few magical traps linked to the bonds.

::But how well do you understand the heart? Perhaps given enough time you could have restored their minds, but what good is a mind when the spirit is already dead? Living ghosts I call them, and I've seen too many over the centuries not to reconize when I am looking at someone who is beyond help. If you want to help someone, save your efforts for Vai. Her spirit is damaged, but at least still present.:: Ryleh's mental voice carries an almost crushing weight of sadness.

Well,. that explains it, she thought to herself as Professor Agave explained that the plants would be the obstacles they had to overcome today.

"Shall we work together on this?" she whispered to Michael.

Male Half-Elf

"I think we might have too. Too bad the trees aren't safe." He whispers back, watching the student caught being set down on the ground. "I'm not sure we want to risk trying to use the roads like back in Anderail."

Male Human (Mole Zoanthrope) 16 Monk/Ninja

Ryuzo spawns 2 clones to go look for the plants, while he turns invisible and turns into a mole, and hides in the earth...and finds some grubs to chew on...

"Yeah, I'm pretty sure that would be a bad idea," she whispered, taking his hand as they backed slowly away from the hostile tree. She kept a wary eye out around them, looking for the potted plant but also for plants that might misbehave.

Perception: 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (6) + 21 = 27

Professor Agave steps back into the plants, disappearing completely, as the students begin their search. Several of the students have already gotten into trouble and are trying to break free of vines or make their way through patches of briar and blackberry bushes.

Ryuzo finds himself being harassed by roots that try to wrap around him and hold him in place.

Male Half-Elf

Kitty spots one potted plant quite quickly, but the green pattern on the red petals is a dead-giveaway that it's a fake. Michael is about to start his search when a snapdragon leaps from behind a fern and attacks! Michael just barely ducks in time and scrambles away.

"I'm not sure whether I'm scared or impressed." He mumbles as he watches the plant-creature warily. "I've never heard of a plant like this before."

I wanna make a Summoner that gardens now.

Male Human (Mole Zoanthrope) 16 Monk/Ninja

Ryuzo happily chews on the roots, sucking out the water. If they start to constrict too much, he'll go ethereal...

Image (doesn't have wings)

Kitty eyes the plant curiously but from a safe distance.

"I think I'm starting to understand why the garden has that reputation."

"Let's try over by the koi pond."

Uh oh.

The roots snap away from Ryuso quickly after being chewed on, but return with a vengeance in moments. The fact they have sharp thorns now reinforces the feeling the plants are very angry.

"No argument here." Michael replies as he creates a tiny force field and deflects the plat toward another group of students. He hurries with Kitty toward the pond. "At least in the gym I knew what was dangerous. Out here anything could attack us!"

I'd like to point out we just brought Saffire to a pond filled with fish.

Male Human (Mole Zoanthrope) 16 Monk/Ninja

Burrows away from the plant in search of more grubs

Clone 1 continues to look for the plant
Perception 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (14) + 10 = 24
As does Clone 2...
Perception 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (1) + 10 = 11

While one clones fails to locate anything other than a path bordered by surprisingly mobile rose bushes, the other spots a potted plant that almost matches the description given. Unfortunately, while there are blue patterns ont he petals, the petals themselves are pink and not red.

Looking for a 28. Which means Kitty was this close to spotting one right off the bat. When you do get a 28, I'll post where the plany you saw is.

Fair point.

Kitty fell into the pond she had to lunge so far after Saffire to catch him. "Those fish are not for eating," she said severely.

She looked around from this unique vantage point to see if she could spot a plant.

Perception: 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (2) + 21 = 23

Michael kneels down by the pond and offers Kitty his hand to help her out.

"It's a good thing you caught him. If the fish are anything like the plants he could have been in trouble."

Warping the table to free her might activate the traps. James' analysis shows that a powerful dispel may turn off all the traps, and the straps.

After hearing the announcement over the PA system in the gym, Fei makes his way to the gardens...and the somewhat odd spectacle of students being accosted by plant life.

He carefully makes his way through the verdant expanse, more attentive to the plethora of vegetation than the specific potted plant the others were looking for. He would have to come back later with his drawing pad to try and capture their vibrancy on paper, he thinks to himself.

Perception Check: 1d20 + 32 - 5 ⇒ (12) + 32 - 5 = 39

"I wasn't going to chance it," she said as she climbed out of the water. "Still no sign of the potted plant," she started to say before having to jump out of the way of a hostile fern with a small shriek.

Fei spots several fakes and one of the real targets - up in a tree, secured by vines so it can't fall out when the tree moves to bat away students.

"Okay, I think I have an idea how to turn these things off....I hope. Mom, stand by and yank the straps off and get her off the table as soon as I give the signal."

Jiminy frowns at the table as he warps reality enough to allow him to cast a greater dispel on the straps.

"Okay, now."

Aananda grabs the straps to try and rip them off.

The Half-Alive Streets | Truth of the Seeker | The Sanctuary of Drowned Delight

The iridescent straps fade briefly and Aananda rips them all off. There's a tense moment when the machinery's hum increases briefly, but nothing happens. Vai is now free.

"I never thought I would be happy to see a boulder flying through the air... Come on, let's go look around the smaller plants." Occasionally blocking plant attacks, Michael manages to get them to an area filled with vegetables instead of ferns and bushes. "Nothing for attacking plants to hide behind here."

Now if only those tech-zombies would show up again...

Aananda picks Vai up gently and sets her on the floor.

"I brought some healing potions," Fieri said, pulling one out of her bag.

Though Fei finds a way up the tree and is making great progress, two large branches swing toward him with startling speed. For a tree anyway.

Branch 1:1d20 + 17 ⇒ (11) + 17 = 28
Damage:2d6 + 9 ⇒ (4, 4) + 9 = 17

Branch 2:1d20 + 17 ⇒ (7) + 17 = 24
Damage:2d6 + 9 ⇒ (3, 2) + 9 = 14

I doubt those hit. :)

Ahh, but you forget that you lose your Dex bonus when climbing normally, so the first one actually does hit (and the second only missed by one point).

One of the limbs slams into Fei's side, but he absorbs the energy before it can dislodge him. He then tries to obtain the potted plant nestled in the vines.

CMB (grapple) check to grab the potted plant: 1d20 + 27 ⇒ (17) + 27 = 44

Huh, didn't think the slam from a Treant would ever hit Fei. Go figure.

Fei manages to grab the potted plant quite easily, and once he has it the tree calms down and stops trying to forcibly remove him.

"Nicely done, Fei." Professor Agave says from a branch higher up in the tree. When did she get up there? "Brave too, going up this tree on your own. You may take the time to rest now if you want."

I believe there is a Quintessential Monk option to climb without losing your Dex bonus (for a 10-point DC increase), but I forgot about it (^.^)

He looks up at the sound of the halfling professor's voice, bowing respectfully as he hands over the plant.

"Thank you, Professor. As this morning has been...very active...I will take advantage of that offer and meditate here for a few minutes."

Bowing again, he carefully descends from the tree and then sits down at its base to center himself.
