"Antimagic, huh? Well, I do like a challenge," she said, smiling for the first time in this conversation. "Just lay back and relax. I'm going to touch your temples because that strengthens the connection. And let's see what we can see," she said calmly, resting her fingertips lightly on his head.

Do you want a percent chance to overcome the anti magic or a caster level check?

"Skeletal? How... Whatever."

adon just lays back and relaxes as best he can.
adon has an SR of 36. Caster level works.

Well, that should do it.

Nala sends her awareness across Adon's surface thoughts first, looking for anything out of the ordinary.

among his serface thoughts, there isn't much at all- he's quite tierd, and it's stopping him from thinking much about things. He's currently worrying about the skeleton changing thing.

"I'm going to try to look at your memories now. Specifically your memories about your dreams," she said in a calm, soothing tone.

She attempts to find the relevant memories. It was difficult. His mind was slippery. It resisted contact at all. But she had been born fey. She was used to slippery minds.

dreams:

[i] adon's dreams are rather fresh in memory, still. His dreams are farely normal noghtmares, a voice in the dark, right up until he turns around, then they just cut out, without warning. But the dream continues, nonethless, with Nala there- and what adon looked at is an abberation, to say the least. Similar to something Nala probobly recognizes. And more unnerving, it looks at her. aknowadges she's there- as if it was aware, even as just a memory. Or perhaps it knew Nala would be looking at this.

It is clearly as realistic as Andromeda can accept, though she's still aware this is the SIM, but for just a moment there she might have slipped into the illusion as she loses a moment of that SIM awareness to the level of detail and additional 'umph' put into the experience add beyond software levels, of fine tuning.

The flight can continue as long as she wants, there's plenty of canyons and floating mesas for gliding, exercise, or an assortment of other 'flying' experience.

If she did opt to go in another direction, within moments-- the scenery would shift given where she flies, either oceans with cliffs and more cave passages and sea life, or mountain peaks with snow and tall pines providing their own paths.

Tryko'Sam doesn't interrupt vocally, nor does he materialize in the SIM either. She could interpret from the occasional animated being that either joins or she chases, that maybe he's participating through them-- or just content to guide the experience.

Adon suddenly finds himself inside a freezer as the floor, walls, and ceiling are all abruptly covered in ice, and icicles are growing out of every surface. He can see his breath in the now frigid air.

"The dream is the same every night?" she asked, but her voice was shaking a little bit now.

At first she is content to fly around the canyons, enjoying the occasional games of chase. But as the SIM goes on, she finds herself drawn to the wilder portions, eventually veering off towards the oceans, with its more difficult winds. She gravitates towards anything challenging. A bit of an adrenaline junkie, this girl.

Once Phaez arrives, and he sees that everything is under control, Ace shifts into a wolf and takes off after Keme and co. He sniffs out their trail, and eventually spots them outside, near the boundary.

He resumes his normal form, and retrieves the curare from its pouch, which he hands to Michael "Tamina said you would know how to use this."

He then calls his staff to him, taps in on the ground once, and turns it into a scimitar, his favorite weapon. "Alright guys, what's the plan here?"

memories:
once Nala is back in, she can feel the thing watching her- it doesn't seem to matter what she's looking at. It's always there, watching. Adon's dreams don't link many places, and the ones they do seem strange and unrelated- memories of mages, people he's angry with. Memories tied to uses of his powers. None of them really give any answers. But there is one that stands out- a fuzzy one, from a long time ago- back when adon was a kid. He Probobly doesn't remember it all that well, but perhaps it could be peiced together. But the longer it's looked at, the closer the thing seems to get.

the thing watching Nala makes some horrible static noise, with a voice speaking several different laungages barely audible in it- it sounds kinda like adon, but distorted and warped.

adon's mind:

The static dies down, and the creature seems to do it's best to dampen it's presence. It's still there, but it's trying to be "quiet" about it. The memory is frustrating to untangle, however- it's quite old. Some of the peices just... Aren't there. After a while, the creature "moves" "behind" Nala, and everything starts to distort- the line between what's real and what isn't blurring. And new peices form, that look almost correct for the memory, but are wreathed in the same static the creature is.

Image

It's everything she can do not to actually scream. She tries to put the pieces together into a coherent whole that Adon can understand. If the monster in his head was trying to help, well, she was just going to go with it. For now.

adon shivers, for multiple reasons.

adon's mind:

as the static peices are put into place, the whole memory takes on the same static wreath- and it becomes more then clear. Some realities that adon couldn't have known find thier way in- his parents, blinding what looked like a magical nexus to him. The nexus flashes back and forth between somehting that looks normal, and the creature.
"thank you, Nala. You've done good. Now, if you don't mind, adon's about to have a breakdown. Might want to go deal with that."
the static slowly starts to look humanoid, and it gives a polite little bow, before trying to shoo Nala out of adon's mind.

adon is far from ok, his shivering is violent, and he's doing his best not to cry.

adon is far from ok, his shivering is violent, and he's doing his best not to cry.

Nala is glad to take a step back from Adon, removing her fingers from his temples and breaking mental contact. She sends a quick message to the desk clerk as she desperately tries to calm enough to de-ice the door.

Image

Meanwhile Sadie finds herself being paged to the desk and sent back to Adon's room with no explanation. When she got there she found the door wrenched open and Nala stumbling out. The room is lined with ice.

"What the hell happened?" she asked, horrified.

Image

"Adon needs your help," Nala said quickly. "The thing that's behind his nightmares is something that his parents bound to him. He's having trouble coping with the memory. Also, he's very, very cold. Stay near him. Talk to him calmly. I need to keep a little bit of distance so I can turn the ice off. I'll start with the cupboard with the thermal blankets."

male human gestalt fighter 15/duelist 9, rouge 5, monk 1

adon just curls up, breathing heavily. Leading to him getting colder, and shivering more.
"It's there. It's always been there. My parents... Didn't know until afterwords... And that's why they discouraged me from... But it doesn't matter... It came anyway. It's still here. And I can't escape."

Image

Sadie started to say something, thought better of it, and stood beside the chair he was reclined on. She took one of his hands. "Hey, Adon. It's okay. Or it's gonna be okay. You're not alone, okay? Just hang in there," she said in as encouraging a tone as she could manage.

Image

"Your friend is correct," Nala said, wresting the cupboard door open in spite of the ice that still stubbornly clung to it. She quickly unfolded the thermal blanket and spread it over Adon. "If nothing else the thing inside your mind cares about your well being. That's somewhere to start."

But sometimes I would climb up to the rafters and look out the window, and I would watch the people outside. Their life seemed very different than mine. "I... It doesn't feel like it will. I can't even describe what's bound to me, but it causes reality to melt around it. And I can't forget what it looks like, anymore. I feel sick. And... Worse, it's part of me. Of my soul. Even death can't take me from it- when I die, it'll take me with it."
adon looks at Nala, even more confused, now.
"It cares? It certianly never gave me that impression."

"Who did this to you?" he asks, calmly, with a slight growl in his voice...

"My family," she said simply. "They abandoned my brother on a mountaintop to die. He didn't, but that was certainly not thanks to them. And they locked me up in a tower. I suppose my aunt and uncle must have had some say in it. They're technically in charge of the family. But I've never met them. My parents certainly didn't mind. They came to look at me once a year. They never seemed to like what they saw. And my cousin...he's the one who hurt me. Mostly. Sometimes the servants would hit me for not being obedient, but mostly it was Embre. He liked to hurt me. But it's okay now. That's all in the past. I'm free now, and I'm here at this school, where I can walk around as I please and meet all kinds of people and there's plenty of food to eat and nobody hits me. The Headmaster said that my family wasn't allowed on school grounds, and it's his school so he gets to say who's allowed and not. So I don't have anything to worry about," she finished cheerfully.

"Yes. It was quite protective of you, actually. It would only allow me access to your memories once I had assured it that I had your best interests in mind. I know that this sounds hollow coming from me. You've seen my reaction to the creature. I'm sorry. I can't help it. Any Winter Fey would feel the same. We are ...ancestral enemies. But this one is not quite the same. It is dangerous. I am certain of that. But...I think perhaps that you affect it as much as it affects you. What your parents did in their...we will graciously call it ignorance. What they did created a sort of symbiosis between you and the being. Your mind has been trying to tell you this, which is why you kept having the dreams. You were trying to tell yourself what you knew was happening."

"Adon, what I told you before, when we were walking here. I still believe that. I can only imagine how terrified you must feel right now, but I still believe that you are a good person and that you can find a way to bring some good out of this. And whatever happens, you're my friend and I'm not going to abandon you, okay? You don't have to face this by yourself," Sadie said, squeezing his shoulder.

He looks visibly shaken. He shakes his head.

"I don't understand. What would they have to gain from treating their children that way? Who will take care of them in their elder years? This makes no sense..."

Asha tilted her head, considering these words. "I don't think logic has a lot to do with it. Plus, firebirds live a loooong time. They're probably thinking they've got a some centuries to figure that out. And before the council was disbanded, they had a very narrow definition of what a firebird should be like. My brother and I don't meet that definition, so we were considered a shame on the family. They thought that I might still be useful to them, so they locked me away. There was supposed to be an arranged marriage. But it fell through, so then I wasn't any use to them at all." She shrugged. "I basically just work from the assumption that everything they ever told me was wrong. Seems to hold up so far."

1d20+32 Perception.

In a small clearing up ahead Ace spots Repp kneeling on the ground next to a blonde half-elf girl, enthusiastically stabbing her over and over again. Probably not a coincidence that the girl has a passing resemblance to Vai, although he gets enough of a glimpse of her face to know that it's not her.

"I know a little about how that feels, but at least my family showed remorse at my exile. They felt they had no choice..."his eyes glisten up a bit at this, clearly a sore spot for him.

Asha rested her chin on her hand and examined his expression carefully. "I think these are very different emotions," she said. "I'm the one who exiled myself...and it wasn't an easy escape. I'm happy to be rid of my family. Well, except for my brother, but he's even less in their good graces than I ever was. He's a student here too. So I ended up with more family by leaving than I ever would have had if I stayed. You look sad about leaving your family. At least I assume that is what the extra eye moisture means? They were sorry to see you go and you were sorry to go. That's what you said, right? I'm sorry if I'm getting it wrong. I don't always know how to act around people, and it's hard when there are so many different sets of social rules to learn."

SIM Room 3

At first she is content to fly around the canyons, enjoying the occasional games of chase. But as the SIM goes on, she finds herself drawn to the wilder portions, eventually veering off towards the oceans, with its more difficult winds. She gravitates towards anything challenging. A bit of an adrenaline junkie, this girl.

Guiding herself toward the ocean, the aqua filled waters, with hints of purple and turquoise rush forward on her approach. A good stretch of coast line, with some inlets filled with water, while others dried up full of various alien vegetation, appear to have a myriad of cave systems awaiting the bold explorer.

A beach line below, contains various large furry creatures with long canines, looking quite the lion like mermaids of the sea, sans tail and four legs-- more like flippers. They 'bark' or 'ark-ark' up at her passage, while sea birds take flight and steer clear of her form.

A kelp forest can be seen below the surface, while further out in the deeper blue/purple depths, a large sea creature breeches the surface to spew up a spout of moisture, followed by a few others of it's pod.

Idllic with teaming life-- loads to explore and test one's wing upon.

"It wasn't their choice...a long time ago, my tribe aligned itself with a dark spirit to save them and lead them to better hunting lands. They embraced his guidance for a long time, then he disappeared, or they quit venerating him. He used to claim one of our people as his 'prophet', and it was a good thing. Well, after a few hundred years without a word from him or no one being chosen, they began to realize he wasn't a good fit for our people, and they returned to giving thanks to nature for what it provided. Then one day, I was chosen. The darkness that came with it frightened the elders, and I was exiled for the good of the tribe. My family went along with it, seeing wisdom in the decision, but didn't like it. My people are very family oriented. I have siblings I haven't seen in years..."

Can we do a slight retcon and say that Ace re-established the collective once he caught up with the others?

adon looks at Sadie, curious. There's a soft flicker in his eyes, an occasional twitch of static in them.
