Well, I don't really worry too much about alignment for this game, but if I had to place it, I'd say Tyrrin was LN (not just based on this recent interaction) and Dave....well....I'd say CN and sliding towards evil pretty fast. Jiminy is really glad this guy isn't dating his sister any more. Also he has Dave on his watch list...for when Dave takes that apparently inevitable step off the deep end and has to be stopped. He pretty much sees Dave as a sociopath with potential for supervillainy at this point. Not to say Dave couldn't still turn it around. That's just the impression he's been making.

We could have a long debate about the ethics of torture, but in the 'typical' alignment description a Good character generally could not abide torture as acceptable. This is why, for example, I've always described Tyrrin as 'Lawful Neutral with a tendancy towards Good'. Because from an ethical standpoint, she would not have a problem with torture under the right circumstances.
Really, the argument would come down to whether or not sentient creatures inherently have Rights, which is not a simple question to answer, even if our modern age may suggest otherwise.
Maybe not a simple question to answer, but that's actually the argument inherent in the gem dragon's position. They were literally willing to put their lives on the line for the idea that all sentient creatures have rights (including self-governance). Hence Jiminy's reaction to the torture thing and his assessment of Tyrrin and Dave's reactions.

Funnily enough, I'm not that far from such a path either. I've just got the best roadblock ever(when it comes to that path) as my girlfriend.
lol. That video was hilarious.
And yes, Kitty is an excellent deterrent to supervillainy. :)
lynora |
Oh totally Lyn. I'm just thinking very loudly here. I'm speaking in very general terms. ;)
Tyrrin is definitely more of a Hobbesian (because I think it suits her well) where as my own ethics fall closer in line with those of Bentham and Mills (ie: utilitarianism).
....it's a good thing that I have google or you would have totally lost me there. :P
I have thus far avoided all philosophy/ethics academically speaking. I have little to no patience with arguing for the sake of arguing and so avoid such classes like the plague. It's also why I avoid politics. It's not that I don't have strong opinions. It's just that I spent my formative years being verbally torn to pieces every time I dared to express an opinion. Cause my dad thinks arguing is fun and always takes the opposite side of an argument no matter what he actually believes. :/

This was one of the things I was hoping for with Tybs. I was hoping that if this happens, Tybs would be a good influence, or at the very least a reason not to go full crazy.
Not much better to help pyromania than a pyrophobic relationship.MisterLurch |
My apologies for my sporadic and crappy posting rate lately. Between my girlfriend's unexplained abdominal pain and its attendant hospital and doctor visits and the demands of school, I have had little time for Avalon.
I will be trying to get the two scenes I am involved in caught up today.

dave is a very results oriented person
He does not like torture, for a variety of reasons, but he feels that he will do what is required of him.He also figures that he could offer to erase the memory afterwards so "no harm done"
This is something he would do with little hesitation, but would loose some sleep over it afterwards.

Seems I'm evil then, because i doubt i would feel anything if i had to kill or torture.Funny, though, because in practice, i get guilty about simply misunderstanding my parents, but if i hurt someone i don't like, i would feel nothing. Heck, i did once, and i look back on it fondly, as it was the most calming moment i and had in years- punching a guy i didn't like in the face. The only guilt i felt about that was disappointing my parents.
icehawk333 |
What I'm trying to say is morality is really, really complicated.
I've taken alignment tests, and i always, always get lawful, and usually good, because they look at behavior.
I behave well because there are a few people i like so much i don't want to disappoint them, not because i feel bad about the action itself... If someone upset me enough that i would hurt them, i flat out enjoy the act.
David.De'Foul |
Right,
Dave believes what he says, but the thing he's never had to actually physically torture someone, on the few times it came up either he's scary to not need to, or he was able to get what he wanted direct from the person's mind without too many complications,
He read a bunch on torture, and the various methods he listed off and then some, because those are useful skills,
Actually doing it would probably be a rather different expirence, one he'd loose sleep over, but one where he'd be stubborn enough to keep going till the job eas done.

Sorry ;P
I dunno, I've found that my philosphy classes (at least, the non-seminar classes) tend to not have very much argument in them at all. I personally find Philosphy to be super fun. My Professor recommended I develop my term paper from this semester further, but I don't actually like writing papers, else I would probably major in philosphy. ;)
Sucks about your dad though. I do love a good debate myself, but I'm with Vickory - it's very easy for it to engender hurt feelings.

RE: High School and life experience.
Complain all you want, but just don't get bogged down/focus on the complaining. That won't improve your life. That doesn't empower you to take responsibility for what you can affect change on. That's my advice. Oh, and... 'Back in my day, two hills, barefoot, snow, in the darkness! And get off mah porch, yah young whipper snapper!'
RE: Discussions of Alignment
There are clearly defined rules if someone wants an empirical statement of how to measure alignment in the Pathfinder OGL website. I did some reading on this earlier today, it's fairly clear cut as to doing what makes for 'evil acts'.
I think the biggest distinction here though is-- Act versus Intent.
I rue the day that we develop a thought police. Judging people by their thoughts? That's crazy talk. Sadly-- it's usually after the act, that we discover someone MIGHT have been crazy. Heh.
But-- remember, our game universe, in regards to the alignment axis, is completely defined by Lynora, the GM. So... all our arguments are moot, if she puts her boot down and says, "It is so and such." Not as an NPC or PC, but as the GM. That's my two cents. I do look forward to hearing an official stance, if deemed necessary, to clarify alignment. Given the 'rules light' state of things, though, doubt it's necessary though.
RE: Arguments
I have a pet peeve with people who ONLY focus on the negative aspect (of anything, additionally) this word presents.
If you looked up 'argument' in the dictionary, you'll find it REALLY is so much more than just 'angrily disagreement between two or more parties' or whatever they call it. Grumble grumble!
RE: Philosophy
Love it. Want more of it always. Super fun, to have that thinking process going on in the head-- nothing better in life, imho. Some of the best college experiences I had was due to Philosophy courses.
Probably more than two cents here.
ps: Best wishes to the sick girlfriend there, Lurch.

"People care more about you when you look like you care some about yourself. Not like self obsession, but a little pride and self image goes a long way."
I just realized...
Dave, I think I'm doing your job.:P

I just had an idea for a new character.
A chi blocking childhood rival for Lang,
Airbender on one side, monk/air bloodline sorcerer/elementalenlightened fist PrC on the other
I'm thinking air infused template on a slyph
Personality somewhat similar to Neji from Naruto or Gary Oak of Pokémon

you're the freaking avatar, this guy would be the kinda guy jealous of you since it was first announced, he'd be the same level as you
He' be continually be gritting to prove it should be him who was the avatar, not really getting the whole nice guy, friend to all, peacemaker stuffSpecializes in close range disabling moves like stunning fist, the aforementioned chi blocking stuff,
Keep him at a distance and you're relatively fine,

That's cool. Sleep is nice. Whether you expect it or not. Just so long as there isn't something you have due tomorrow you haven't done.
I might have broken my leg.... so there's that....
1. What happened?
2. Please tell me you're posting this from the doctor's office.♣♠Magic♦♥ |
So I have been running to do everything recently. I ran out to the car to get something. While wearing converse. After it rained. I slipped and my foot kept going under the car and my shin kept going towards it. I heard a sound like bending a tree limb. It might have been the gravelly ground. I thought it was my shin at the time.
My dads an EMT, and we've looked at it. Fairly sure it's just a bruise/pull, so not doctor time unless it gets worse. We can't afford gas/bills at the moment unless we're sure it's needed.
I've broken my humerus(third hardest bone in the body) before, so I know the broken bone feel. This isn't quite so bad.
I can bend it all around and flex and stuff and there's no funny angles, so we're fairly certain it's OK. I'll know for certain in the morning.
Thanks for the concern.

well in any event, if you can get him approved in time, the avatar cermony is the perfect place to introduce him. if he is an airbender, and we are at (or will be at) the air bender temple
also he better stay away from Ignace.....

Red never had a girlfriend, but if he did, Green would have tried it.
(Please don't say Misty. Ash is a loser. Red is the real deal.)
Also, from my building of Rayquaza, Air bender monk+Elocator is /amazing/.
I really like quivering palm too. It reminds me of the Wushi Finger Hold from kungfu panda.

Forever young, and forever clueless...
He's also somehow managed to de-level his pikachu in between runs... that takes some seriously bad training. He also has never gotten an Elite Four win. Red is the Champion. And lives on a blizzarding mountain.
Ash struggles with fending off the weakest squad of team rocket, where Red took down the entire organization.
Ash has been going for over a decade and has yet to catch one legendary pokemon. Red has Zapdos, Articuno, Moltres, Mew, and Mewtwo.
