Let's see, new students that can band together against the "sophomores". So far I've seen the armor guy, myself, and the quasit.

I thought you were a "second-year", Asch, with Ephebe, Nasima Shearskye, Vakkler Relkav, Krays, Vai Emkar, Kitty Tanaka, Michael Dacamara, Khassar Blackadder, Percival Sweetwater III, et al.

Actually, I've been here two years before this one, making me a third year.

See? This calls for a "Roll Call" section on the "Campaign Info" tab! And a link to the picture Dragonborn3 just made. So students don't make idiots of themselves walking down the hallway and greeting the wrong person.

But greeting the wrong person is how you make new friends! ^-^

Seriously, I don't think it's that big a deal. The dormitories aren't divided into years or anything as far as I know, and classes are all over the school.

Aananada is going to be soooo angry I've let a fiend into the school...

The whole year thing really is irrelevant. Ephebe, Jiminy, and Taron are all in their second year here, but they are also all in very advanced classes. Michael has been at the school for three years, but started out needing to learn more basic knowledge, so is is less advanced classes than people who have been here a shorter time than him. Avalon gets students who are at all different levels and assigns classes based on ability rather than a set year. :)

But to avoid some confusion, I can list out teachers for you.

I have an ingame kind of question, what is different about playing a teacher-type compared to a student-type? I never even considered what Ryo has proposed to me.

Students can solo Balors and stuff.
Teachers can own Demon Lords.

This is the only way I know to tell the difference.

Students are capped at level 16. Teachers can be low epic. (Though I still ask that wishcraft be refrained from without prior out of game discussion, thanks.)
Also, playing a teacher is a great option for those who don't have quite as much time to devote to the game since it's easier for teachers to be part-time characters.

Wonderful place, nicknamed "Mentor" because it is the place to go for just about any kind of information, with Avalon being a close second. There is a wonderful tavern there with ale that could peel the scales off a wyvern.

Yes, we're talking like Read or Die. And I'm just going with normal wizard but all of her material componenents are paper and all of the visible effects are well, made of paper. :)

Because not all of the teachers are capable of that actually. Most are normal teachers that can handle beyond-normal students.
