I'm perfectly fine with bisexual or homosexual characters. I won't mind playing charatcers in same sex relationships, as we have an understood "fade to black" for parts that I'm less comfortable with.
That said, some characters will be more open to it then others, of course.
I'm glad there aren't any hard feelings over the acid splash; I understand that Waltz was just playing in character, making sure his opponents were down and not playing any trickery. Silyph is obviously a cautious individual, and maybe untrusting, which fits with what he's been doing so far. Luckily, the acid wounds are just as temporary as the dog bites.
I'd like to get this out of the way now, as I see an opportunity to bring it up: though I don't like hostile PvP, I will allow it. However, I would greatly prefer if your characters could settle their matters in this spell duel arena if it can't be resolved with words. I'm not going to be giving away free resurrections, so if your character dies, they'll be dead permanently. Thus, I'd rather not foster animosity by having you killing each others' characters.
Waltz |
For any motivational concerns Silyph is a loyal slave/servant in patronage of the Chelish house Leroung.
If during the advent of the quest the plot turns to aid the Psuedodragons for character motivations the merchant we're dealing with could be a competitor of House Leroung and given that knowledge Silyph wouldn't mind throwing her lot in with the dragons. She'll seek out someone who can cast a sending spell to inform her master of the position she's in if she thinks her master will eat the cost of such a spell for the info (i.e. trade info, if a merchant is having trouble holding their warehouse the market opens up for a short period of time a little bit in whatever goods he peddles).
If we're meant to actually aid the merchant given any knowledge that house Leroung would benefit from such aid she'll be doubly glad to work towards it.
Basically if you ever need a IC reason to motivate her to follow any course of action her un-plot related benefactor is an easy good 'go to' amorphous mine for character motivation. Especially if the party gravitates towards the benevolent good leaning courses of action a quick dirty parallel motivation is always open for you to impose at your own leisure.

Figured I'd toss this up in as it's OOC in the discussion section:
Silyph's offer of scribing scrolls will stand for anyone who wishes to take her up on the offer. She's got 24.38gp to dedicate to scribing and is just shy by 0.62gp of being able to scribe 2 1st level spells or 4 0 level spells. She's got 1 free 1st level spell slot available to fill with any spell she knows for scribing purposes for today.
She'll scribe and offer them at creation cost for anyone that asks with a 0.5gp markup for cantrips and a 1gp markup for 1st level spells and will take promise of future payment from either the job they do together or other means if they decline doing the job or fail. The markup is mostly just for the time dedicated to the work and is still considerably cheaper than standard purchase continued bussiness will waive it or lessen it if multiple scrolls are sought.
She'll even toss in Vhiloe's service to perform a second aid in spellcraft for a single week in which they wish to attempt to learn from the scroll when she has little use for him at her convince (any week she spends studying or relaxing).
She'll trade scrolls for scrolls as even trade, but is only interested in a select few spells from everyone's combined spell list (As it's the same as purchasing them herself at half price):
-Burning Hands
-Magic Missile
-Shocking Grasp
-Ray of Frost
@Cezar: She'll prefer you to pay Vasile to scribe a scroll of Magic Missile and in turn give you any scroll or combination of scrolls at equal cost. She doesn't know what magic you're good at IC, but will trade a Sleep scroll or two cantrips for Disguise Self even though she's not particularly interested in the spell and does so mostly as a nicety. Given the former option she'll prefer that instead, though.
It would be nifty if we could create a breakfast-club-esque study group that trades scrolls at creation cost during our academic career.
Cezar Razvan |
@Silyph: It wasn't ever specifically stated, but Cezar will not be learning any spells that do any sort of damage. Enchantments, Illusions, and harmless Abjurations are probably going to be the only spells he takes. In regards to the payment, let's just do gold.
Though on that note, I'd be fine with scribing scrolls of any spells I have, provided payment is given for the creation.
Silyph Verrani |
Oh yeah Silyph isn't 100% interested in damage she just severely lacks direct damage and is looking to rectify that in light of a duel where a magic missile or burning hands would've been a welcome addition.
She gravitates towards BF-Control, Save or Suck, Save or Die spells, but if given the opportunity will keep 1 decent damage spell in reserve for situations that unfortunately call for it. There's just simply not anything else that peeks intrest on our combined spell lists that she'd be willing to pay even scroll creation cost for, if Cezar had colorspray then that would be a different story. ;) I do really like the concept of Cezar as a pacifist, though.
Feel free to look at the spell list in my Spell-book section of Silyph's profile. She can scribe 1 level 1 spell or lower of any spell she knows tonight and will scribe cantrip of either (Acid splash, Daze, or Light) in the morning as to not burn up spell slots the day of the job.
Let me know what you want either IC or OOC and she'll scribe them up tonight. I'm perfectly fine RPing out the interaction if you're of that persuasion, since we've spent a majority of RP with NPCs :p.

I'm cool with that. Are we needing to roll will saves at the start or end of week 2? I tossed up Silyphs week 2 freetime stuff Here. If we don't need to make will saves on a regular 2 week basis due to the simple class list she'll feel less overwhelmed and opt to work her free lance identify job instead, unless this side quest is eating our free time or something in which case disregard both the previous week 2 roll and the following..
Vhiloe's Aid
1d20 - 1 ⇒ (15) - 1 = 14 [success]
Silyph's roll
1d20 + 8 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 8 + 2 + 2 = 32
Money earned:2d4 ⇒ (1, 3) = 4 x 6 = 24gp (deduct 1 from not doing non-dedicated work)
Any way you slice it is cool just eager to get week 2 behind me. <_<

Well, Hathin could study in order to make the check easier, if he fails too many in a row...
Since you guys wanted to make a study group, we could do that like this:
If more than one character is studying together, each character can add +1 to any one person's bonus to their Spellcraft checks (not including themselves). This represents the group working as a team to make sure everyone is prepared to achieve.
Think this'd work?
Hathin De'Lark |
I'd actually like for Hathin to try and sink on his own two feet for at least a while. He either gets lucky and wings it through - or starts freaking out and gets threats from the professors that they'd contact his family.... which would obviously freak him out more!
It's only that sort of pressure that would likely force him to knuckle down and study, etc. At the moment he's infatuated with his newfound freedom and indulging his interest in tattooing. Perhaps this side-quest out after pseudodragons will inspire his first ink.
He's still got a +6 on Spellcraft, so law of averages means that he should do ok most of the time anyway.
Shane Gifford |
Okay, that makes sense. Just so you know, even though the cantrips you can learn in this starting semester aren't part of the classes you are taking, you can study for them all the same. The classes themselves don't require study.
You guys can learn as many cantrips as you want to. You're basically only limited by your rolls here.

Would it require us to spend our free-time studying on the same week?
Perhaps a +1 bonus for each PC that exceeds the DC of a classroom spellcraft check by a certain amount (5 for +1, 10 for +2, ect..) to represent some of us not having much trouble and instead aiding our friends.
For example: DC 15
Silyph = 12
Vasile = 20
Pakak = 15
Cezar = 17
Hathin = 14
Since Vasile beat it by 5 that pushes Hathin to 15 and lets him pass. Silyph would need 2 people one to hit above 20 another to hit 25. Multiple +1s not stacking, but a +1 and +2 and +3 stacking.
Something like that seems underpowered enough and would lead to a sort of averaging out the groups failures as a whole dependent on others widely exceeding the DC. At a +10 condition that doesn't seem too overpowered and would keep the PCs a little more level if luck favors one over the other strongly.
Shane Gifford |
Hmmm, that seems good. I was coming from the perspective of you guys investing weeks into studying; your example lends itself more to a passive thing which you guys would do as a part of your normal weekly schedule. That sounds more in line with what you guys were going for, and I like the mechanic, so we'll go with that.
Waltz |
I definitely prefer a passive system and am partial to rewarding exceptional success with a small boost to others. Codify or develop the mechanic or any mechanic any way you wish; I was just making idle chatter. If you decide on something I'd request it and any details up on the Campaign info page for clarity.
Waltz |
@Shane: Just making idle commentary on the plot turn. At first I was half expecting the leader of the pseudos to chime in "Drugs are bad M'kay", the fighting ring totally a good plot turn.
Holy crap, guys.
I think we all gravitate towards being online at similar times. Plus it's Q&A. Q&A causes an explosion of posts. :D
Fredrik |
Aha! Since neither Pakak nor Shane have bothered to name the cafe/restaurant, that gives us here in the audience an opening. Hmm.. you're in the Citadel Crest Ward of the Heights District. According to the Guide to Korvosa, there's a cafe/bar called the Jittery Quill near the University of Korvosa; but that's many blocks away, and a university hangout.
Near the Academae, it just shows a couple of bed & breakfasts: the Upslope House (practically an inn) and the Frisky Unicorn. Neither of those sound quite right, so we'll have to make it up. Anything to the NxNW would be in danger of being a Sable Company hangout, due to the proximity of the Great Tower; likewise for SxSW and Asmodeans, due to the Temple of Asmodeus.
Anything to the south would be more expensive, due to its greater proximity to the seat of power in Castle Korvosa; while ExSE doesn't front a road, and so likely doesn't have a gate. That leaves NxNE, near a gate (if there is one) in the section of wall that is northeast of the Hall of Summoning and north of the Hall of Whispers. However, it would do better at a major intersection, like how the Jittery Quill is at Academic Avenue and University Way.
How about that big building on the west side of the intersection of Academic Avenue and Crest Circle East? (Just push it right up against the intersection, eliminating the tiny building shown in-between it and Arcane Ave.) It's a few blocks away from the hypothetical NE gate; but then, it's a similar distance from the presumed front gate in the south-center wall, between the Hall of Induction and the Hall of Wards. That also puts it close enough to the University for cross-institution friendships and romances to meet there, without being close enough to the Jittery Quill for real competition.
Let's see... the cafe/bar upstairs opens onto Arcane Avenue, while the bar & grill downstairs has a street-level entrance on Circle Crest East (since the building's on a hill). If gambling is legal in the Heights, then there are doubtless card game rooms behind the cafe, above the grill. Now it just needs a name! Or names. I've seen that done.
For the cafe/bar, how about the Emergency Destination -- as in a "very familiar" location for teleports -- and then the Rathskellar for the restaurant?
"See you at the Destination after class?" "Of course! I have some emergency studying to do, and my roommate's an illusionist." "'Nuff said."
Shane Gifford |
Hey there Fredrik! I find that wall of text hilarious. I like the Emergency Destination as a bar name; though teleportation is beyond most students capabilities, that doesn't mean anything for the barkeep. Pakak, you like the Emergency Destination as the bar you work at?
Anyways, Waltz is right that we're missing one student; I haven't thought about recruitment yet. You interested in joining Fredrik, or were you just bored?
Fredrik |
*Waves at Mark*
Can't it be both? I was just bored and/or inspired, not thinking about joining, but I would be delighted to. Do you like the character that I initially applied with, or should I make a new one? I'll go ahead and finish his gear, since it would be more or less the same either way.
Shane Gifford |
Sure, you can join in with Suleiyel. It'll be a moment before you can start playing with everyone else, as the group is currently in the middle of a quest. However, you can post what your first and second week actions were, and make the appropriate rolls. Also, you can roll a Spellcraft during your week 2, to learn one new cantrip of your choice.
Suleiyel |
Sweet! I just finished his gear. I'm actually doing it all by hand -- just making it look like Hero Lab so that things are where people expect -- and I keep things divided by location for personal convenience. (This guy's easy: light encumbrance no matter what.)
I know I'm making a scholar, but keep in mind that he trekked all the way from Kyonin by himself, and kitted himself out beforehand based on what he read and people he talked to. (He must've quizzed a Pathfinder at some point.)
I'll start writing up my first couple of weeks as soon as possible. Thank goodness for this holiday weekend! I needed it like you wouldn't believe.
Hathin De'Lark |
Heh - this will get interesting... methinks it will act basically as a splitter wedge for the cohesion of the group... I need to think on how Hathin would actually react here too.
Money for nothing is always good; though extortion of a smuggler who probably has enough influence in the town to make some snotty kids just disappear is different :P
Waltz |
Fun Asmodean fact: Silyph has 0% guilt and the time it would take her to inform the guard of the ill activities is roughly forever. No lying simply letting others infer things that aren't true in a manner befit for a devil worshiper.
I debated whether or not to ask for more money, but I couldn't justify not at least trying IC. The mans a businessman and leverage was presented. Figured I'd spice up the morning with a little controversy. ;)
The price was mostly just a high-ball in negotiation tactic. She'll even likely do the job for 241gp if she can't get any better of a deal. If she can get the powerful merchant who shares the name of her former masters noble house to yield to her 1gp it'll sate a weird control issues. I'm hoping this is the kind of fellow who's impressed by Silyph's paticular brand of creativity rather than the send murderous assasins to kill you in the night sort.....
.....hoping. Though, assasins in the night would make for a fun game. <_<
Waltz |
@Shane: I expected it to go as it did, but where would a lawful evil infernal binder who worships Asmodeus without a little lighthearted playful extortion and contract re-negotiation? ;)
@Pakak: The delay between Silyph's extortion and your post was like 2 hours tops. No grounds for apology dude, none needed. It was awfully thoughtful to do so, though. :)
Hathin De'Lark |
For Waltz / Silyph:
This clip was what came to mind...
Pakak |
If Pakak doesn't mind, I'd like to claim Afrikaans for Orcish?
"Ek vind dat dit 'n lekker harde taal en hou van wat"
I find that it is a nice hard language and quite like that
Sure. Ironically, you've already given me a new tweak by using it. Kak meaning excrement, and Pa meaning dad (If this free translator online is worth anything) and sudddenly Pakak was labeled (probably by someone who only spoke a little orcish at best) with a cruel name which insults his orcish father (and probably didn't make growing up any easier).
Mind you, I personally may stay lazy and just use labeled spoiler tags, but I may give it a shot.
Shane: I think Pakak has been working for at least two weeks now? WHat should I roll for gold if anything? Sorry, I lost track :o
