Adowyn fires another 2 arrows against the monk, then Leryn attacks their enemy.
As Leryn will engage in combat with Aramaya only after Adowyn's shots, I don't know if it will provide some cover to the monk...
First shot: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 122d6 + 1 ⇒ (6, 4) + 1 = 11
Second shot: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 72d6 + 1 ⇒ (3, 5) + 1 = 9
Leryn makes a 5-foot step and attack.
bite: 1d20 + 3 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 3 + 1 = 71d6 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
trip, if hit: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
Julian Keenens |
I'm not getting too close to the edge!
Julian circles his allies to end up next to Aramaya again and swings his wooden sword again.
Wooden Katana: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9 NL Damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
He misses horribly, his aim even worse than before.
GM Baerlie |
While Dexter tries to hit the monk, Pierre casts a spell at Zahir. Zahir lands two solid hits with his wooden weapon. Adowyn shoots two arrows while her companion tries to bite the monk, but neither the arrows nor the bite attack can injure the monk. Also Julian's katana misses the monk.
Aramaya takes a step back and uses her longspear to hit Zahir, but she also misses.
Longspear vs. Zahir: 1d20 + 11 - 4 ⇒ (10) + 11 - 4 = 17
"You are a good fighter, fast and strong!"

Leryn tries to positioning itself better this time to bite Aramaya.
Acrobatics to move through threatened squares (2), without provoking AoO:
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10 Ouch!
Acrobatics 2: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26

Adowyn fires another 2 arrows against the monk and moves a little forward. 5-foot step.
I am not considering any cover in the check below...
First shot: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 122d6 + 1 ⇒ (5, 3) + 1 = 9
Second shot: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 72d6 + 1 ⇒ (4, 3) + 1 = 8
"Gods damn it...", Adowyn thought while see her arrows flying very far from her target.
Dexter T. Rose |
Dexter tries another attack at the monk. Totally forgot about my bite before!
ECB: 1d20 + 8 + 2 + 1 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (11) + 8 + 2 + 1 + 1 - 4 = 19
Damage: 1d10 + 3 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 3 + 2 + 1 = 7
Bite: 1d20 + 2 + 2 + 1 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (20) + 2 + 2 + 1 + 1 - 4 = 22
Damage: 1d3 + 1 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 + 2 + 1 = 7
Bite Confirm: 1d20 + 2 + 2 + 1 + 1 - 4 ⇒ (3) + 2 + 2 + 1 + 1 - 4 = 5
Pierre Viret |
Please, don't forget Bless, friends :)
Pierre moves closer from Julian and casts guidance on him.
"We've got to win this fight, friend. Go and hit her." he says with a grin.
Zahir Hor-Akim |
Frowning, Zahir doesn't seem to understand what Aramaya is saying. He tries to speak but his words are hardly understandable (oracle's curse causes Zahir to only speak and understand Ignan language in times of stress :/).
He moves a step forward and swings his swords at the monk, but without much success this time.
Atk shortsword (nonlethal, divine favor, bless): 1d20 + 9 - 4 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 9 - 4 + 2 + 1 = 12

Atk shortsword (nonlethal, divine favor, bless): 1d20 + 9 - 4 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 9 - 4 + 2 + 1 = 9
Damage (nonlethal, divine favor): 1d6 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 + 2 = 7
Julian Keenens |
Julian takes a step closer to the monk and raises the wooden katana. He focuses on aiming his next attack and strikes.
Wooden Katana, Bless, Guidance: 1d20 + 6 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (10) + 6 + 1 + 1 = 18 NL Damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10
GM Baerlie |
After another bunch of attacks the monk finally falls unconscious.
combat over
Itephta revives Aramaya and both monks acknoledge your abilities. While Aramaya retires to her room to contemplate her own performance, the invisible stalkers carry everyone back to the base of the spire and Itephta uses his magic to return the pillar to its original shape. He, Aeotsep, and Menkha then excuse themselves to discuss your trials.
"Please allow us some time to discuss your trials. We prepared a room in one of the Pahmet caves for your use tonight." Aeotsep says.
Your faction mission: you may now convince Aeotsep to talk about a former student which could attain a level of mastery and wisdom which could rivale the founder’s. DC20 Diplomacy check
Pierre Viret |
"Haha, well done everyone! This was a good fight!" says, grinning, the old priest.
GM Baerlie |
During the night nothing happens.
The next morning, you gather with Itephta and Aeotsep in the Master’s Room. Itephta is especially delighted and praises you for having exceeded his expectations. Itephta is amenable to bequeathing the Sky Key component to the Pathfinder Society on the condition they provide the monastery short-term assistance.
"Our monastery is remote and receives little direct aid from Sothis and the great river cities of Osirion, and this distance has made us a target for worshippers of Rovagug who recently became our neighbors. These so-called Doomsday Knights frequently attack caravans and pilgrims, and we have done what we can to protect the trails that lead here with the disciples we have. In fact, one of our own, a respected Ouat named Bertrag, disappeared several days before you arrived. At this point I assume he has perished; the cult is known for sacrificing intelligent creatures. Irori promotes self-perfection, but I do not confuse that with blind self-reliance when confronted with a true threat. Tar Kuata can guard travelers or strike at the cult’s heart, but it cannot do both. With your assistance, we might rid this land of the Rough Beast’s warriors once and for all. While the monks defend the monastery and the roads, can you destroy the cult of Rovagug?" the monk asks.
Dexter T. Rose |
"Killing, you say? Good! All that play-fighting yesterday was making me a bit edgy. Consider it done!"
Pierre Viret |
The old cleric wrinkles his eyes, smiling.
"Is this still part of the test? I don't recall you mentioning this before..."
.Pregen/2. |
Adowyn starts to walk to outside the monastery, when she notices that her fellows are still talking to the monks. The hunter stops and looks back, over her shoulder.
"What are you waiting for? Let's do it", she told with authority.
GM Baerlie |
The group decides to help the monks and kick the cultists out of this area.
"We have tracked the Doomsday Knights to an abandoned mine located more than a day’s travel north of here. We wish you fortune and insight in your upcoming challenges." Aeotsep says and takes his two rings off to hand it to you. "I offer these to you as parting gifts to help you combat the enemy cult."
Itephta provides you a phylactery.
All three items are magic.
Phylactery of Faithfulness
Ring of Climbing
Ring of Jumping
Approximately 30 miles north of Tar Kuata, the Merotsi Mines were abandoned over a century ago. A weathered wooden sign stands by the entrance, warning visitors in Osiriani to “keep out.” The mine’s adit is also boarded over, though the planks are loose and easily removed.
.Pregen/2. |
"What those things are supposed to do?", Adowyn asks Itephta and Aeotsep.
Spellcraft DC16 Phylactery: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20
Spellcraft DC20 Ring 1: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17
Spellcraft DC17 Ring 2: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19
Dexter T. Rose |
Before we leave, I want to consider whether the people the monks are sending us after are really who they claim them to be.
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (20) + 10 = 30
As they approach the entrance to the mine, Dexter casts a protective spell on himself. Defending Bone.
EDIT: Ooh, dibs on the Phylactery! Norgorber guide me!
Pierre Viret |
Spellcraft on ring 1: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15
Pierre can't tell what kind of enhancement the first ring would give to its bearer.
I don't understand the use of the phylacteries... What do they grant?
Dexter T. Rose |
I don't understand the use of the phylacteries... What do they grant?
It lets you know if a proposed action would affect your alignment or earn you disfavor with your god.
Pierre Viret |
Ok, that's what I thought. But I still don't get the why. Your character should be aware of such things, shouldn't he?
Pierre Viret |
No, haha! I think a theologian of a god would know when his actions differ from the tenants of his god :D
Julian Keenens |
Spellcraft, ring 1: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24
"this is a ring of climbing," Julian says after Adowyn's identified the other two items.
"I don't need any of these. Feel free to take them. Shall we head out?"
Zahir Hor-Akim |
Zahir takes Aeotsep aside to talk to him. "Could we please speak in private? It happens that the organisation I serve is always interested to find able and wise people. We reached the conclusion that a school dedicated to self-perfection like the monastery of Tar Kuata seems like an good place to look. Would you mind telling me if you know such people. In particular, we've heard of a former student who have attained a level of mastery and wisdom rivaling the founder's, Narmek Tar Kuata. Have you heard of him?"
He will take 10 on Diplomacy for 20
Spellcraft DC16 Phylactery: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9
Spellcraft DC20 Ring 1: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15
Spellcraft DC17 Ring 2: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19
"No objections," Zahir says. "The other ring is a ring of jumping. If nobody else want it, it might interest me."
Pierre Viret |
Pierre shrugs and simply says with a grin "Let us go. We have something to negotiate."
.Pregen/2. |
"Let us go. We have something to negotiate."
"Agree. Let's go. Leryn, come here", and then they are all prepared to leave.
GM Baerlie |
Aeotsep tells you about Dhiara and hands you a letter from her:
To my colleagues at Tar Kuata,
No matter the great distance that separates me from the
monastery, every day I fondly remember the humble halls
filled with extraordinary knowledge and mortal potential. I
encourage each of you to strive for excellence and also look
forward to the day you might leave the monastery to test
your skills against worldly challenges. I write this not to
suggest that Tar Kuata restricts our skills, but there are
discoveries one can pursue only beyond its cloistered walls.
My writing supplies are among the last of my humble
belongings left to pack. The people of Iadara have mostly
kindly honored the conclusion of my personal trial against
Tanglebriar, yet even 10 years without rest seems trivial
compared to the struggles of the elves that call this home.
Nonetheless, I have met and exceeded my goal, and it has
driven me to find others who fight against impossible odds.
My contacts in Erages speak of kindred outcasts in a land
called Averaka_a place unfamiliar to me, and one that I am
intent on finding.
My next letter may not arrive for many months. Until
then, always aspire to be greater than you were the day
before, and harness the lessons of the past to realize a
greater future.
Your fellow sister,
Dhiara
The air here is acrid but does little beyond irritating the eyes. Five horses tethered to hooks on the walls have bloodshot eyes, rashes, and other minor conditions from their exposure to the mist. It is really hot in the mine. Torches in the wall sputter in the damp air, providing only dim light throughout the mine.
The fumes are volcanic in origin and mildly acidic—uncomfortable, but not immediately harmful.
Dexter T. Rose |
If no one objects, Dexter will cast a light spell on his sword to illuminate the way. He volunteers to travel in front, where the best killing is sure to be.
Julian Keenens |
Julian draws his katana and moves just behind Dexter.
"It is that you were faster, else I'd have volunteered to go in front," Julian says to Dexter, a grin on his face.
.Pregen/2. |
Kn. Nature - take '10: 15 = 15
"The fumes here are volcanic in origin and mildly acidic. We must stay alert. Someone has some way to protect from it, even magical?"
Dexter T. Rose |
"A wet rag over our faces might save us some discomfort."
Dexter pulls up the hood of his cloak, which covers his face with the holy symbol of Norgorber.
Pierre Viret |
"Indeed, my friend." Pierre imitates his winged companion and puts a damp cloth over his mouth and nose.
.Pregen/2. |
Survival: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15
She uses her survival skills to try to avoid the most of the damage that can be caused by the fumes: she maintains a cloth near the nose and mouth, wetting it regularly, as well as eventually passing a little water in her eyes to remove soot, everything that is needed to mitigate the possible side effects of the fumes.
The check was for "Survive in the Wilderness", if needed.
Adowyn and Leryn follows close to Dexter and Julian's back.
Julian Keenens |
I may also want to do that.
Julian fastens his cloak in a way that also covers his mouth and nose, imitating his allies.
Pierre Viret |
Ok for me :)
GM Baerlie |
There are two main ways to descend to the lower mine levels: a set of mine carts to the east, and an elevator to the west. The mine carts sit on a double track that descends down a steep tunnel. Each pair of carts connects to a pulley assemblage by chains, which an operator can move using a large windlass at the top of the tunnel.
Each cart can hold up to three Medium creatures and has a smaller windlass, allowing a creature to ascend or descend unaided.
You can ascertain that the carts need oil.
.Pregen/2. |
"Do any of you know how to 'drive' this?", Adowyn asks while examining the mine carts, with an expression of doubt whether it would indeed be reliable.
"The elevator could be a better choice", she concludes.
Pierre Viret |
"I don't have any clues as of driving mining carts. Which solution would be the stealthiest?" asks Pierre, clearly not at ease with the environnement.
Dexter T. Rose |
"If no one knows how to drive the cart, perhaps we should stick with the elevator."

Zahir Hor-Akim |
I will take 10 on Knowledge (dungeoneering) for 14
Zahir examines the mine carts. "It appears that these carts need oil to function properly," he says after a while. "As I see no oil in the nearby area, I suggest we take the elevator."
