December 26th Update

The rogue tries to stare you down, but Korunar's threatening presence is too much and she looks away scowling. She sheathes both her daggers.

On your word then..." she says coldly, and she walks over to the barbarian who has now been stabilized by Trini. With some effort, she manages to lift the woman barbarian onto one shoulder and drags her towards the wizard.

The wizard finishes a short incantation and summons a floating disk where the unconscious barbarian is placed.

"For your information, we're professionals. No-one was harmed until your little intervention, and as for stolen items, there are none. My team was scouting out this shop to secure some armor and weapons for the upcoming raid. But intervention from guilds and third parties are to be expected.

She gestures to the staircase.

"Shall we?"

Feel free to ask your questions if you proceed to escorting them out.

"A few questions before we leave.. Which upcoming raid? And which guild do you belong to? What is the big haul you've talked about just before we showed up? And who are these rich son's of b*##&es you mentioned?"

Korunar takes a look around to find out which exciting treasures they could have found.

Raid? Where were you going to raid? Who were you going to raid? Who were you going to raid for?

Raid? That doesn't sound good.

December 26th Update

"First time in this iteration, right?"

The rogue saunteers over to the suit of armor by the bed and proceeds to take off one of its legs. She uses a few tools on her belt and begins to tinker inside until you hear a whir of a motor and a click. Moments later she stands up with small machine in her grasp, which she puts inside a side pouch.

"The raid is being funded by the rich fat-cats of the North district, but that doesn't mean that they're turning away investors. Some less "adventuring" types thought it'd be a good way to get in their good graces, so they paid me and my team to secure as much armor and weapons as discreetly as possible. Not exactly playing by the rules of the Abyss, but not many people keep a tally really."

"But yes, a raid. The popular opinion of ending this iteration is thought to be some kind of artifact in the cave systems not far from town. But many teams that have gone in, haven't come out. Its been a long time without much progress so Filigree is bankrolling one massive push."

She leads you all downstairs and goes to work on the large furnace. A few minutes later she produces another machine which she pockets again.

"The place was supposed to go up in an inferno, and no one none the wiser. I have to say though, not one of my favortie jobs. Anything that deals with all the politicking the guilds do is nasty stuff."

You hear a whimpering. The wizard is standing over the dead bodies of his two former companions, Simon and Jeremy. He rubs his face with the sleeve of his robe, a noticeable wet streak is left.

"Jeremy was supposed to take me for cards after the job." The wizard said quietly. "Said I'd be great with a bit of magic to help. And didn't Simon said he needed the money for-"

"Shut it Geck!" The rogue snapped. She took a moment, and turned to face you, her face as normal as if you had jsut met.

"Forgive the lad, he's still a bit new to the company. Training is a bit rough at first, but casualties are expected. They signed the papers, they had their business, just as you do yours. I would like to take the bodies back. The Abyss takes so much from us, I'd be damned if I let it have these two."

With her arrows firmly embedded in the bodies of the company's fallen friends, Trini avoids eye contact.

"Yes, go ahead."

She just hopes the same fate doesn't fall to anyone in her party. She feels drained after their fight and doesn't think she could pull anyone else bad from the brink of death today.

Korunar listens carefully to the rogue's words. He feels really uncomfortable as she tells about the north district.

"I always hoped to escape from the rich's people influence by going into the Abyss.. and now I had almost killed someone else from their tools and toys"

A cold shiver runs down Korunars back as he spots the dead bodies downstairs.

"I am sorry for your loss" he says seriously to the wizard.

"Everything feels so wrong now... We were send into the Abyss with no direction. All they told us was to help to make progress. None of us knew what awaits us. Perhaps you can clear up some things for us? These villagers.. do they really exist? Are they living people like you and me? Where do they come from and what happens to them when the Abyss is solved?"

He ponders for a moment and then comes to the conclusion that they should trust them.

"You know, we've promised some woman in this town to help them. Strangers occupied some mine, probably the cave system you've talked about, and force the villagers to bring them supplies. Do you know who these strangers are?"

Bently looks surprised by Korunar's words. The little halfling has had about all he can handle at this point.

You're sorry for there loss? Hah... What angle are you playing now Korunar. You weren't sorry when you climbed through a second story window and attacked some strangers with no way of knowing who they were. Trini wasn't sorry when she put those arrows through Simon and Jeremy's necks. Emerich wasn't sorry when he broke the enchantment that I had placed on those two. Instead of me asking these questions of them over a couple of drinks now we are asking over There dead bodies. Why? Because people saw something they didn't understand and decided the best policy was to start murdering people without having any idea of who they were or why they were here. Then you have the Gaul to treat these two like their untrustworthy when the dead bodies of their friends are under their feet. I swear you all are some of the worst people I have ever met. At least a Rats Nester Knows how bad a person he is. For goodness sakes... We were told there were other groups from OUR GUILD around. What if these guys had been one of them. Then would you have been sorry? Were they doing something wrong? YES!!! But who made you judge, jury, and executioner. Oh wait a judge, and Jury would have SOME idea of what was going on before they started killing people.... AND NOW, YOU ARE SORRY!!!! YOU DON'T GET THE RIGHT TO FEEL SORRY AND HAVE EVERYTHING BE OKAY... BECAUSE NOW THERE ARE TWO DEAD MEN WHO HAD FRIENDS AND FAMILIES !!! YOU ARE ALL EVIL MONSTERS!!!

The little Halfing is now shaking uncontrollably with fists waving back and forth, a wild look in his eyes.

Bently looks around at everyone staring at him and lowers his arms and grows quiet again.
and do you know what the worst part is? I helped...

Bently collapses to his knees and starts sobbing.

December 26th Update

Following Bently's outburst, there is a silence. Then rogue steps up and lifts Bently up by the front of his shirt.

"Sheila-" the wizard begins, but is cut short by a resounding *crack* of her palm against Bently's face.

You can all see her, seething in visible anger, more emotion than even Korunar goaded out of her.

"Look here half-pint,"she growls through gritted teeth, "I'm am truly touched that you care enough about my companions fates that you'll cry and scream about it, but if you think I'm going to let you insult them, think again."

Even if Geck or any of the party try to intervene, she continues.

"My men were killed by your group. We made a decision. You made a decision. The Abyss doesn't give a s&!*. They died working with their lives on the line, and men, NOT MONSTERS! took them."

She drops Bently to the floor.

"Did you think the Abyss is some land of make-believe and sight-seeing? People die here everyday. Every hour. Every minute. Us. You. Them. If you aren't cut out for it, then scurry back to Terrace and eek out a living there. But Every, Single, Person understands the risk they take when they step into the Gate. If you want to treat these two men's deaths as the unfortunate result of evil monsters, I. WILL. KILL YOU."

Sheila lets her threat hang in the air, and glares at everyone in the room.

Bently rubs the side of his face where it is already turning red. He looks at Shiela with a look of Pity on his face....

I don't know what has happened to you... Shiela was it. But I Pity you... Because the Abyss has obviously hurt you very much. Whatever it has done it has made you weaker. Oh look how strong you are knocking the little Halfling around. It is a weak person who hurts a thing because they do not understand it or because it challenges their sense of understanding. But if people act like monsters and treat each other like they are less than people then WE all become monsters. What point is there to any of this if we just act like animals taking from one another at every chance. If people worked together to solve the Abyss instead of competing with each other than the Abyss would have been solved long ago.

Bently stands up and approaches the rogue.

You think I'm Weak because I care about people. Because I think humanoid life has value. Because even though I did not know your friends I think they deserved to be treated as people and not just as pawns to be taken off the board by another piece... Because I would stand up and say when I think things are wrong... I tell you it takes strength to look what you fear in the eye and extend a hand of friendship knowing that at any time you could be attacked just for being nice.

Bently raises a hand in friendship to shake the hand that matches the red imprint on his face.

"I did NOT attack them out of nowhere. We all heard the smith's yelp and from the outside of the window I heard they were talking about their loot. I KNEW they were thieves. Should I just knock at the window and ask what they were doing? That's a good way to die soon! I did not plan to kill anyone. All I wanted to do is to help! And know where I know their story, where I know that they are just a playball of some of those rich bastards, I DO feel sorry! I know how it feels to work for them. I had to fight and kill people for their pleasure. Money rules everything for them and to refuse their coins will bring death to you and your family!"

He sights. Bently would not understand. He never had to deal with people who value his life as much as a pile of crap.

Korunar lifts an eyebrow as the rogue picks up Bently but does not intend to help him yet. Perhaps she could calm him down.

He can understand Sheila's anger more than he can understand Bently's sudden outburst. Quietly he watches the them.

Trini crosses her arms. "The first thing we knew about these people was that they had broken in and forcibly restrained someone. We didn't attack innocents, and we stopped once negotiations began. You knew we were all armed, so what did you expect? If you were so concerned, you should have let us know your plan before you barged in first to manipulate someone's mind and get manhandled. We had plenty of time. If you want to paint yourself as the sole hero in this situation, go ahead, but you aren't blameless here, either."

December 26th Update

Sheila, stares at the small halfling. She listens to him speak, and watches him extend a hand.

A moment passes.

"Truly naive."she mutters. Then she walks out, motioning all of you to follow her. It doesn't seem as if Bently's words had much an effect on her, but only time will tell. Whatever the case, she will remember.

Geck hurries after her, only to stop in the doorway before exiting.

"It'll take some time to reach the exit. We need to grab some supplies from a cache we set up. We'd offer it to you, but..." he turns to look at the unconscious woman on his floating disk, "We already...lost a lot on this excursion. I'll wait outside with you while Sheila grabs it, just in case you think she'll run off."

There is a creak of floorboards behind you all and a meek voice is heard.

"U-Um, excuse me?"

Smith appears before you. He seems a cowardly for someone working with fire and steel, but he approaches you in humble timidness.

"G-good sirs and lady." he stutters. "If there's anything I can do for you, please let me know. I-I have fine armor and weapons, FREE! of course! heh-heh. Just-T-take whatever you'd like. But please, don't kill me!"

He closes his eyes, gets on the floor and bows to you, his face on the floor, his hands flat on both sides.

December 26th Update

At the mention of arrows, Smith nods.

"Of course, of course."

He hurries off upstairs, and soon returns with a sturdy leather quiver, which when uncapped, reveals that is full of arrows.

He moves to hand it to Trini, nervously glances at the bow, and decides against it. Rather, he sets it on the floor and retreats to the stairwell making sure to take the long way around the large blood stain seeping into his floorboards.

"I-Is that all you require?" He asks nervously.

December 26th Update

Smith decides the best use of his time would be upstairs cleaning up. Geck, true to his word, stays with you all until Sheila returns with a large pack on her back. With the two dead bodies on the conjured horse, and the recuperating barbarian on the floating disk, they motion for you all to follow as they depart back into town.

Several people notice your departure, though you can't decipher how they interpret the situation. And its not as if Sheila particularly cares either.

"It took a few days to find the exit during this iteration, but it turned out to be the lake on the other side of the hill. Some scouts thought it'd be fun to go skinnydipping on the job, and got spit out back in Terrace buck-naked."

Even with the somber procession, she still chuckles from the memory.

"All you got to do is submerge completely and you'll leave. I'm assuming you're all done with your business if you're escorting us out?"

December 26th Update

It takes an hour or so of walking before you reach the lake beyond the hill. The water seems normal and if one of you is brave enough to get near its shores you find pleasantly cold.

Sheila begins to offload her former companions, tossing both bodies into the lake. And at first it may seem like her words are nonsense, but true to her former testimony the bodies disappear from sight.

"I guess I should thank you for not offing us," she remarks. "But I'm in a pretty s!&&ty mood, and that's going to get worse when I get back."

Geck and Sheila wade into the water, give you all once last glance, then dip under the surface. A moment later, they're gone.

As Geck and Sheila disappear, Korunar wonders wether they made the right decision. After staring in the water for a while, waiting if they show up again, he turns towards the group.

"So, what are we doing now? We could go back to the smith, he is in charge for the deliveries to the mine. Or we could explore this area a little while we're here."

He looks around if there is anything interesting within sight.

He kneels down and scoops up some water in one hand and let's the water drop back into the water. He stares off quietly into the woods on the other side of the pond and finally takes a deep breath turns around and faces the party.

I think I should go too... This just isn't what I was expecting. The infighting and hurting of other people from Terrace for no reason just makes no sense to me. I apologize if I hurt your feelings and hope that if we ever encounter each other again it will be on good terms. At the very least you know I am the sort who would rather not hurt you given a choice.

Bently gives a little wave and turns around and walks into the water.

A mere discussion is considered by him as infighting?

"Kid, you've not hurt my feelings, if you need time to think things over, take it. No need to get yourself fretting till it eats you up."

When Bently has submerged, Daniel crosses his arms, shaking his head softly in contemplation.
"The kid's got a, sorry to say, too optimistic view.
There's nothing wrong with being friendly, i'll credit people for being kind hearted, but being merely friendly won't save one's bacon in every situation."

He relaxes, pinching a twitching nerve in his neck.
"Hopefully he'll sort out his problems, before they lead him to somewhere he doesn't wish he'd be."

December 26th Update

You all watch as Bently disappears into the waters. Slowly but surely, the ripples fade and the surface becomes pristine once more.

The time is late afternoon and a rough estimate is night will fall within a couple hours. Even now the orange hue of the sky is pleasing to look at, and the wind picks up a small chill.

Bently only:

You step out of the gate, a bit turned around and fall into the gentle hands Gregor, the proctor for your test. One look into his eyes clearly tells you he understands what must have transpired for you to arrive alone.

"Its not for everyone Bently," he assures you as he brushes some drops of water from your face. "Come on, there's an inn with laundry at the West Alley. No shame in finding something you're not suited for. No shame at all."

December 26th Update

With the general consensus of heading back to town and having a word with the smith, the party heads back to town.

Another hour later, they once again enter the village's perimeter. Night will fall within the hour but there should be enough time to visit the smith if its a short conversation. As you walk on you see the young men and women of the town have congregated near the Vivi's Inn. You pass it and see the silhouettes of folk dancing, and can hear the light tune muffled by the warm walls.

The Market street is almost deserted and while some lights remain on in some of the shops, including the Cracked Anvil.

The front door is locked, but after a few short knocks, Smith answers. Though not as frightened as he was before your departure (he had some time to calm down), he does treat you all with a certain level of apprehension.

"Oh dear, It is after hours, but, um, how may I be of assistance?"

December 26th Update

"The mine you say?"

He thinks about it for a moment, and decides to invite you all in.

There are a few work stools around to sit, and the heat of the resting forge still warms the air in the room. He offers you some drinks, though you notice the large red stain on the floor. It seems to have seeped into the wood, and Smith is still walking around it.

"So the mine," he continues as he sits down, "was the whole reason are little town here even exists. Most folk made their fortune off the place, and, well, lost their fortune with it as well. We've been getting a lot travelers interested in the old place, determined to get inside though we boarded the place up a long time ago."

He takes a sip, and looks to Korunar and Daniel, the only ones he didn't see kill anyone or lash out in violence right in front of him.

"Is there anything you wanted to know?"

"All kinds of problems. The mining eventually led to series of tunnels, and while the minerals were plentiful, all sorts of dangers lay in there. Poisonous gas, undead cadavers, cave-ins, to name a few. And those are only the stories gotten from the survivors. Plenty of folk never came back. After a while, it was decided it was worth too much trouble, and the town boarded it up with a series of blockades."

"Vivi said some travellers now took control of the mine. She told us they threaten to destroy the tree and force you to bring them supplies. Do you know something else about them? We promised Vivi to help with those people."

Since this is just a little town, Korunar assumes everyone knows everyone by name.

December 26th Update

"Ah yes, that did happen indeed."

He takes another sip.

"I fix up their tools at a steady rate, a weapons here and there as well. Some folk are kind enough to pay, and the ones that aren't I've no intention of offending. Not the best arrangement, but I'm no position to compromise."

He pauses to think.

"They do seem to be at each other's throats quite often, definite class-ism if you ask me. But since Vivi asked you to help...if you could help make sure we're compensated for our services, or make it so that they leave the Mother Tree alone, I think that'd be the best you could help us with. The townsfolk are talking about fighting back, but...I don't think we'd stand a chance without drastic measures."

Theres a loud knocking at the door, with a voice asking for Smith.

"Ignore that. another traveler. Been running around town for god knows how long."

More thudding knocks.

"Arnek! Its late! Come back tomorrow!" Smith pleads.

No more knocks, but a light grey smoke begins to come from the entry hallway.

Moments later you hear the loud thud of large doors hitting the floor and a gnome enters the main room. Smith has his hands in his palms.

I'm Sorry Smith... it was an accident... but it's important.... Jacobie said that the group who kicked out those free lancers that were trying to burn your shop down were here...

The small panicked gnome that enters is dressed in very fine clothes... his skin has a barely noticible redish hue and orange hair that seems to almost move of its own accord in a manner reminiscent of flames. He stops and looks both surprised and relieved at the same time...

Oh its... them, I mean You.. I mean....

The Gnome stops and takes a deep breath. He straightens the front of his coat and continues in a slightly more dignified manner.

My apologies. The whole town is talking about the new group that marched the free lancers out of town and I was hoping that you had not left the Abyss yet. I am Arnek Redding and I am hoping that you are the next group that has been sent in by the Alleyway.

They tried to burn down your shop?
With the Smith tied up in it.
Emerich looks at Arnek.
Yes, we were hired by the Alleyway. Why do you ask?

The gnome face spreads wide in a huge smile.
Finally! Yes... My group was also sent by the Alleyway... But... Things didn't go quiete as planned. The rest of my group gave up leaving me here by myself and I have been waiting so long for the next group. Can I... I mean may I travel with you, because I refuse too fail the initiation. And the one thing that I have learned in here is that you can't accomplish anything with out allies.

"I'm all right with that if everyone else is," Trini says cautiously. "Our current situation is the reverse of yours. What led the guild to approach you?"

Korunar is amused by Arnek's way of openening closed dors. Cautious but friendly he inspects him.

"A man who doesn't give up at the first pushback seems a great addition to our group" he cheers. "Like Trini said, we just lost a fellow - he was just not ready for the Abyss - and will need every help we can get, if we want to save this village."

Out of curiosity....how did you get 9 languages at lvl 1?
12 int and 1 rank in linguistics, feat...that's 7.

"Abandoned, huh. That's a low."

December 26th Update

"Pardon me but..."

Smith grabs your attention, and gestures to the waning sun seen through his small, cracked window. It was barely visible, almost completely hidden by the horizon.

"Could we continue this discussion another time? I have rise early to make sure the next shipment of repairs are ready."

Great! So where are we staying at.

Arnek starts walking towards the door and notices for the first time the damage he has done to the front door in his earlier excited state.

Um... Could someone hold the door up so I can cast mend on it? This might take a few castings... and a prestidigitation too...

"Perhaps we could bring the repaired goods to the mine tomorrow? That way we could scout them and plan our next steps."

Korunar ignores Arnek for the moment to discuss his strategy with the smith and the group.
