Gideon keeps his head down as he speaks. "Not really a story good sir. Just passing through on a pilgrimage, spreading word about Ratathiel. If you'd like I can tell you more about his grace and honor".

I'm a bit confused by the horseback Oleg etc. Are we / is the meal set up outside?

I'm confused as well, I asked specifically where the archers normally were as I wanted to be within charge distance of Happ if possible. I thought they would be inside the walls.

RPG Superstar Season 9 Top 32

@Gideon no the cart he sets up is just barely inside the fort like less then 10 paces inside, he does that so they are less inclined to poke around and bother people. I mentioned this earlier but perhaps this dragged a little too much.

Oleg decided to be mounted without discussing it as he wasn't confident the bard alone is going to be enough to protect his wife.

@Shogunto that's correct the moonshine has a sleeping toxin, the idea was you guys rush the 6 archers outside which includes the leader as hopefully most of the other guys get drowsy with sleep venom.

@Reafil I'm sorry you're confused but I have never stated Happ's archers go in the fort first they rotate in after. You seemed clear on that previously and I was wondering why you decided on hiding in the fort rather than outside it. I'm fine reconning that you're behind some tall grass in charging distance outside the fort.

That said this thread isn't exactly moving at break neck speed so I'm not sure why there appears to be so much confusion. There's 10 guys inside eating and drinking that will be making fort saves soon, 6 alert guys with bows outside.

-Wikiwiki is on the fort aiming his rifle at Happ
-Kejal is out there as well likely doing the same
-Evan is goign to drop a buff on nave who is going to wade into melee with the archers
-presumably Reafil is going to do the same
-Shogunto I'm guessing is going to throw some BF control or a debuff
-Gideon I'm guess is going to maybe try a fascinate or some kind of distraction when the boys start getting woozy?

In reserve:
-Svetlanna might throw a color spray at any remaining melee (a 3rd save)
-Oleg might charge anyone still standing after that (if he makes the handle animal)

Am I missing anything?

I also understood it as that the bandits would come into the fort, lured by the tax which was well inside. Since that is not the case and Oleg probably could have told us that I'll have Evan and Nave hide in the grass. All buffing Evan is doing is before the combat, during combat he'll probably summon and cast spells.

Upon the first sounds or sight of the bandits from far away Evan summons his magic to conjure up a protective layer of force around nave, afterwards the air around the eidolon seems distorted somehow. They continue waiting for a signal to strike though. Evan looks down at the loaded crossbow in his hand, not planning on using it unless he runs out of other options.

I'm good with everything as you just stated.

Reafil just awaits the signal of Wikiwik's shot to charge the bandit leader.

Thanks! Shogunto is outside near the archers ready to charge one or two of them once he receives a sign. At level 1 as a witch, my control/debuff spellcasting/abilities don't exist yet. I'm like a subpar melee character at the moment, which buffed myself with Mage Armor and Scarshield (the last one, right before we start charging and attacking - I assume one round of prep before engaging the enemies is something everybody can spare) ;)

for mass rolls I use a click roller and copy paste

For saves DC 15 (adding benefit of aid and the moonshine) For save is +3 for the melee bandits

1d20 = 9 = fail

1d20 = 17 = success

1d20 = 3 = fail

1d20 = 14 = success

1d20 = 3 = fail

1d20 = 2 = fail

1d20 = 15 = success

1d20 = 9 = fail

1d20 = 5 = fail

1d20 = 1 = fail

Will save of badits still up = +1. Svetlana backs up a little to cast then releases her spell on the ones still up. It's a first level spell with her Cha bonus of +3 added to it it's a DC 14.

fewer rolls we shall use the in house roller

Will saves: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (13) + 1 = 141d20 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 1 = 191d20 + 1 ⇒ (9) + 1 = 10

2 of 10 still stand inside.

Basically the men inside start acting super falling over drunk after over the course of what has been roleplayed and start falling over at which point HApp pours out the cup of shine brought to him and Scetlana lets the 3 guys that saved have it with her colorspray unfortunately 2 of them still stand.

I'm going to assume Gideon shouts and this is a surprise round so we go on Init.

I have Reafil on 24
I have Gideon on 20
Then Evan/Nave on 18
Then Kejal on 16
Then Shogunto on 11
Then Wikiwiki on 10
Oleg is going to try to act on 6 Then I'll roll for whatever bad guys still stand.

Evan takes a step forward, reaches into his component pouch and brings forth a small clump butter. He holds it up in front of his mouth and blows on it whereupon it vanishes. I am assuming Happ is down at this point. There are few level 1 enemies that can survive 75 damage...
Seeing Happ go down Evan shouts out. "Surrender now and you won't all suffer the same fate! We won't attack anyone who drops their weapon and throws themselves to the ground." Though he knows he can't really stop the rest of the ambush from going through. Giving the clause that they have to actively do something before they stop attacking them should stop his allies from feeling bad if they attack before waiting for a reply.

Shogunto went directly to one of the archers near the leader, trying to hit it with his bite. He tries to end his attack within 5-foot step of this enemy and, if possible, another one.

Wikiwik hesitated once he had squirmed out of his hidey-hole only to find that his target was reduced to a pair of boots standing on their own. He swiveled Chatka around to point at the other bandits, but none of them looked to have much fight left in them. "Pity" was a concept Wikiwik was still chewing on, but Kejal had told him not to fight people who weren't fighting, so he decided not to shoot. Besides, he had a hard time telling which of the humans were older kids and which were adults.

A bit dejected that he hadn't been able to show off in front of Kejal, he scrambled down from his vantage point to scurry over and herd the bandits into an unarmed group. Kids or not, a jab with Chatka's barrel or butt would keep them from getting any funny ideas. Especially with Wikiwik grinning his toothy grin at them.

Jesus Christ with those critical rolls.

Kejal steps out of the brush, keeping an arrow nocked in case anyone tries to do anything stupid. 'Impressive,' she thinks, looking towards the combination of bandits and heroes. Her bow moves rapidly between targets, but in the end she lowers it slightly as she approaches. She frowns slightly at the pooling remains of what was once Happ, but is pleased to see that everyone else still seems to be alive. "Well." She says, grinning up at the others. "That's one crisis dealt with." She cocks her head, her smile fading fast. "Course, now we need to decide what to do with this lot."

Evan moves forward, crossbow at the ready, though of course that's his least threatening weapon. Before he can get far Nave shouts out. "Stay down or you'll suffer the same fate as Happ." As he slowly swivels his huge new hammer around. Evan gets closer and says loudly, "Let's bind them up first, then we'll figure it out. Oleg, you got rope somewhere here right?" He approaches the horse that Happ rode to look for rope, or if he sees it on any of the others he'll get it from there. Then he proceeds to bind up the remaining bandits. "Shogunto, Oleg, help me out please? Nave and Reafil, you'll deal with it if anyone tries any funny business." Nave does stand guard, but once most of the guards are tied up he carefully goes over the knots.

Can Nave take 20 on tie up for a result of 25 or is that not allowed since it is a CMB check?

Once that is done he collects the group together a bit off from the bound bandits, leaving Nave to stand guard over them then says in hushed tones. "So, now we got a bunch of bandits tied up. I imagine there are a few dark souls among the lot, but some might have been forced into it or might be willing to live a more honest life given the chance. The penalty for unrepentant banditery back in Brevoy was hanging and I don't see a reason to stray from that. Hence I suggest we interview them to figure out who the rotten apples are. Maybe we can learn about their camp as well. As for the rest, we need to somehow turn them into good honest workers, farmers, hunters, that sort of thing. So what do you all think?"

"If we want to hit their camp with surprise, we need to move quickly."

"Maybe Gideon can sort out who's who," Wikiwik piped up. "Then don't need to talk so much. But how you know the others don't just leave and go banditing again? Maybe brand 'em, and second time we catch 'em banditing, we hang them!"

"Yes. Let me speak with them. Sometimes Ragathiel is generous enough to allow me small glimpses into a mans soul to see what lurks there. I can either speak to them as a group, or individually. Perhaps at first in a group, then once their true nature has been revealed we can speak with them individually? Perhaps sway some to turn the course of their lives.

As Gideon speaks, he begins to put his ornate armor back on and retries his sword. Then he removes the worst of the disguising grime and tries to bring back his beaming smile.

I'd prefer if we head now to their camp. They won't be expecting anyone to arrive, nor even their companions, and won't be waiting to share spoils or hear stories. Some might even be sleeping and certainly distracted.

He points out the direction with the long spear.

We can't lose the element of surprise. Plus, most of these men are probably just working for the wrong person. With Milani's guidance, they may conquer their freedom by helping us later on, as honest workers. For now, we can just keep them locked and move already. But never wait one hour or two!

He grunts, looking at the men who surrendered. It doesn't seem fair to send anyone to be hung after they surrender. The orc doesn't particularly care for laws.

RPG Superstar Season 9 Top 32

Since none of you have Detect evil but they are firmly in hand and you can say all take 10 and aid another and the 3 named NPCs will help it will sort out only one of them is truly irredeemably evil.

I'm going to say you do this by interview and from responses and discussion and likely the guidance spell and diplomacy checks you pretty much get the following picture:

-All the bandits grew up in poverty of some sort.
-All were pretty much orphans or in a situation where they ended up socially isolated.
-The Stag Lord and his minions essentially engender almost a cult of personality type of influence, the bandits are treated as almost a fraternity and feel as though they never belonged anywhere before the Stag lord took them in.

There are two exceptions that I will require actual rolls for in order to coax more information or gain some sort of insight via sense motive:

One man is a murderer and ended up an bandit because he was fleeing from his past. He claims he unintentionally killed an elderly merchant in an act of burglary. His eyes tear up as he tells the tale and it is clear that he feels remorse for his crimes but he has the stain of having taken a life.

The other is fleeing rape charges from Mivovan. He claims that the sex was consequential and that the maiden lied to protect her virtue and that because she is related to a minor lord he was not going to get a fair trail.

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (11) + 4 = 15

Kejal frowns. "Element of surprise or not, they have the home advantage. How many men are at the camp? How is it fortified? We have no idea."

Her hard eyes soften at the bandits' tales of woe. "We all make mistakes," she laments. "They shouldn't cost us everything. Come, join us. The pay won't be much, but the work will be honest. Leave this all behind. You'll be given a fair chance at a new life, as you deserve."

Evan is going to be murmuring some cantrips in between asking questions and gauging the answers, touching himself, Nave, Kejal and anyone else who might be asking to bring them guidance. "Let me help us all with this minor cantrip, it sharpen your senses so you'll be better able to do whatever it is you try to do, whether it is to gauge a man's heart or to put your words or tone just right for the situation"
Spam guidance on everyone who wants it. I'm not going to list it on my dice rolls, but I will include it.

Evan turns to Shogunto. "Maybe not an hour then, but we should at the very least figure out where the place is and whatever other information might prove useful. We can postpone some things though. Maybe some of the bandits will reveal their true nature while we are gone? They can survive being bond for a day and it'll also give them extra incentive to help us being able to come back in one piece if we say we'll release them when we come back."

Evan and Nave both try to figure out the men's words. Nave does it because if he uncovers a lie he might get to kill the man. "Is that so?" Evan says, a bit doubtful that the men are telling the truth, but feeling sorry for them if they are.
Sense Mote Evan: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21
Sense Mote Nave: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11

"Where is the camp and how many is there? If you help us out so we'll defeat the bandits we'll keep you safe from them in the future and help you find something honest to do in the future so groups like ours won't come for you."
diplomacy: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (10) + 14 = 24

RPG Superstar Season 9 Top 32

The odds of them beating that with a sense motive of -1 is so negligable I'm busy waiving my hands for the "mook pile" meaning not the two with specific stories.

As a heads up I roll bluffs "behind the screen." Ditto with circumstantial perception checks (i.e. for your characters at times) because you don't know you didn't pass some perception checks.

In this case both the murderer and rapists claims seem legit to you and Nave.

One of the younger ones tells you where the camp is and it's about a 4 hr horse ride SW. He mentions they have 2 camouflaged tree stands manned with 3-4 bandits with crossbows using arrow slits and 5 ft steps to stay behind cover.

The camp is led by a tough ranger woman named Kessel and it's sort of a training camp. There's around two to three dozen bandits in the camp even minus their present number. He doesn't know where the other camp is as they haven't graduated yet.

There's 3 more "instructors" aside from Kessel and Happ, they are all rogues.

The only ones willing to actually fight their camp are the rapist and the murderer... I'll let you guys figure that one out :D

"Their stories seem clear enough to me, what do the rest of you think?" Evan says with regards to the stories of the bandits. "I could be wrong of course. Should we let them help out with attacking the camp? They seem eager enough and if they are as many as they say we might need the help. Would be nice to have a way to know for sure, like a spell to detect lies or something."

While we talk Evan checks over their gear, probably together with others. "Let's see if they have something to help us out against the camp. What gear do you have?" The last question is directed at the bandits.
Should have done this in the last post but take 10 to improve attitude, up to 3 levels for 24(aid might be nice). Take 10 on diplo for 24 to ask question.

Jimmy the Baby-faced bandit replies, Happ and the archers all have a couple vials of alchemist fire. I betcha you could start a fire to distract some of em. I mean if they see smoke they're gonna send some people to look.

Or you could light them up in their treestands like a bunch of murderhobos, but Jimmy the Baby-faced bandit doesn't think that way.

Oleg goes about trying to clam the horses and perform heal checks on them since falling in a pile is usually bad for horses. He'll ask Kejal for help.

Kejal nods to Oleg before pulling Evan aside for a moment. "If we can't trust them, having them turn on us while we're moving on their camp could be disastrous. Even if they aren't well enough armed to physically turn on us, they could still signal the others. Something to keep in mind, at least." She frowns, "Of course, not having them help means that we're short a man or two who has to stay behind and watch them like younglings." Shaking her head, she lets out a sigh. "At a certain point, whether it's now or later, we'll have to trust them. Even though I believe them to be good people, they have lived for years in desperation, and it may not be easy for them to trust us, either."

Realising that she has not helped at all and her thoughts have only muddied things up more, she gives an embarrassed smile. "S'pose that hasn't helped any." She continues. "I guess tell them if they turn on us, we'll feed them to Wiki and Shogunto. In a nice way." A clever smile spreads across her face. "Good luck with all of that. I'm going to deal with the horses - they're much easier than people."

She strides after Oleg, wondering how this will possibly get any easier when the numbers are in the dozens and then hundreds.

Here are some rolls if you actually want them. I think there were 6?

Agreed. While the information was useful, that's about it. When we return, we will deal with them - and for me, it means try to find who can be useful. Who's willing to work honestly and conquer their living.

He grunts.

We should deal with the camouflaged trees on our way, then Kessel and his instructors. The rest, like here, should surrender. No point in attacking or killing workers we might need.

He just gets ready to depart.

Evan pulls Kejal into a brief hug. He likes hugging her and this seems like a good excuse. "Thanks for your thoughts. It's intent that matters the most. As for being down a man, I doubt Oleg or Svetlana will go with us, they can stay guard."

After listening to Shogunto and Reafil Evan says. "Yes let's be off then, the former bandits can wait here. Let's ride with haste. Kejal, how is going with those horses?"

@Kejal: You can take 10 on heal checks. When doing so many, some are bound to be really low. Thankfully the younglings rode horses as well, so you don't need to heal all of them for us to have mounts.

Wikiwik's sour face at Evan and Kejal's hugging grew even longer at the mention of riding the horses. In his opinion, horses were for eating. He eyed the beasts mistrustfully, but in the end he was cajoled into riding with Kejal - all the better to keep an eye on that Evan, who was never far from her.

Maybe he could find a burr to put under Evan's saddle...

2 of the horses need to have a leg reset, Oleg asks if Kejal can use some healing magic once he sets the leg. Those two cannot be ridden.

There should still be 6 horses left as there were 8 total and 2 never got caught in the mess (the horses are supposed to be the main treasure.)

You have the wagon driver he is a drover (expert)/farm soldier warrior) to help Oleg and Svetlana guard if you wish.

Sense Motive I'm going to say that Evan picks up that Jimmy the Baby-faced Bandit is holding something back... You can go Intimidate or Diplomacy to get him to dish further.

Intimidate is my specialty Evan, if you want me to.

I don't control your character. If you want to just go and do it, then do so. If you want to ask Evan if he thinks it is a good idea or ask for permission, then just ask so IC.

Evan murmurs a small incantation again. Then smiles towards the bandit. All in all Evan is actually quite pleased that they managed to get through the encounter with just one casualty. It's a shame one man had to die of course, but he doubted he could have saved Happ from the noose even if he wasn't killed in the ambush. "Come on Jimmy. There is something you are not saying. We've saved you from having to follow Happ around and we'll help you out keeping on the straight and narrow from now on. Don't you want us to come back? We are going to let you live when we do. The next group that could come after us if we fail might not be so nice to former bandits. Do you want to come off to the side for a bit to talk in private?"

"he's right Jimmy". Gideon beams. He nods his head towards the red mist cloud that used to be Happ. "You can see the reward that a life of taking advantage of others brings you".

Off to the side Jimmy tells you: That the man Armen... well he was Happ's second in command for the archers and he used to brag about making that the noble dirl squeel and I don't think he meant that in a good way, sir. I know Kessel had to beat him up once and they keep him away from women when they can. I think that Armen is a bad seed and maybe he doesn't deserve the chance you're giving us.

Kejal frowns at Oleg's request. "I would love to fill the horses with the light of Sarenrae and restore them. But if we move on the bandit's camp tonight, I fear that I may need her favour more before the day is done." She frowns again, weighing the options. "Will they be able to recover without it?"

Evan nods gravely at the words of the former bandit and answer in hushed tones. "Thank you Jimmy. I know how hard it is to stick your head forward like this. We'll deal with Armen once we come back. Both so it wasn't obvious you told us and to save time so we got greater chance of success. I'll tell Oleg though. Thanks again." Evan goes over to Oleg to whisper what they have learned in case they do not return. In his head Nave's thoughts resounds telephatically. Pha, just kill him now and be done with it. In fact, just kill all the bandits, much less hassle. He swivels his hammer ready to strike.
Do you want Nave to attack Armen? I could totally see him doing that...

Evan turns to Kejal. "Will you need a horse as well or would you prefer to fly alongside us? I guess flying is both good and bad for scouting, you'll much easier see them, but they'll much easier see you as well." I had hoped for a reaction to the hug, though the one from Wikiwik was quite fun.

Nave is the personification of your Id, your most primal urges and instincts, I suppose it depends on your character. Are you LG because you're a good person in your heart of hearts or are you LG because that's how you've chosen to behave. If LG is a contentious choice then Nave will kill that man even though he is bound and unable to do anything about it (basically coup de grace with a hammer.)

Kejal wrote:

Maybe yes, but they's suffer first.

Even if Evan is LG the "Nave"-part of him certainly is not. I don't believe that anyone is truly purely good, it's just a product of our choices and thoughts.
Nave suddenly takes a step towards the bandits and brings his hammer down upon Armen. There is no rage in his movements though, just disgust mingled with a bit of will to protect the group from their own inaction. "Scum like you don't deserve to live. You ain't raping anyone no more nor backstabbing us. Not everyone can be redeemed"

coup de grace: 6d6 + 27 ⇒ (2, 2, 1, 5, 2, 6) + 27 = 45

Evan shouts out and runs over, but again he is powerless to stop the eidolon. "Nave! What are you doing! The man might be bad seed, but we should have at least all agreed on a decision!"

Nave simply shakes his head, no remorse visible. "What's done is done. Let's just move on. Weren't we in a hurry?" He says as he wipes his hammer down before moving towards the horses ready to head out.
We have 7 people, but 6 horses, so hopefully Kejal can fly or someone will have to walk which would slow us down a lot.

Haha, I'm intentionally not giving you a response to the hug. You'll see! I'm also assuming that I'm too far away (what, 50 feet?) with the horses to have kept up with most of what's been happening where you guys are.

Before

Kejal nods to Evan. "Sure, I'll fly. I shouldn't have a problem hiding, even in the air - there's enough tree coverage for the most part." She frowns and bites her lip, looking back towards Oleg. "I'd love to do more for these horses, but it won't do us any good to have healthy horses here and wounded ones in the field." She sighs. "I'm sorry, Oleg. They'll have to tough it out until we return. I can't risk the lives of my team."

After

Kejal whirls from the horses at the crunch of bone and explosion of blood. "What in the..." Her eyes harden and turn fiery all at the same time. "Evan! Nave! What have you done?" She still doesn't entirely understand the relationship between them, and looks at each of them in turn, her expression a mixture of horror and fury. She runs over to the man, but of course has little she can do with his body stoping promptly the neck.

spits on the corpse

To Kejal, If he hadn't done it I might have when you left. A few of the women here will thank you Nave, that man was sick.

Uh, according to Summoner section, "An eidolon has the same alignment as the summoner that calls it and can speak all of his languages."

There are different interpretations of LG, like of all alignments.

I can see Nave's reaction as a version of LG. We were given the charter to tame these lands, so executing a bandit is lawful, and if he was a rapist, it could be argued to be good, too. Just not as merciful as Sarenrae's followers. *g*

Unconcerned with the fate of the dead bandit until Kejal shouted, Wikiwik hurried over from where he had been sizing the injured horses up for slaughter. "Uh, yeah! What you... do...?" He glanced at Kejal, wondering if she was having trouble seeing what Nave had done. Wikiwik could see it just fine. Maybe it was because he was closer to the body on the ground.

Still, a chance to one-up Evan was not to be lost. "Bad magic twins! Wikiwik didn't kill that guy!" he added, just in case Kejal hadn't noticed that. He struck what he considered to be a noble pose. "Me and Chatka never smash anyone's head in today!" He preened a bit, thinking himself very clever to have specified the day.

When he realized that Kejal was going to fly, leaving him to the mercy of a horse on his own, his giant ears drooped. "You watch it, horse! One wrong move and I eat you tonight!" he promised the animal before jumping up to clamber into the saddle.
