Welcome! This thread will serve as a brainstorming thread for the campaign. I'm hoping to talk about Character Creation and the Setting here. When the Setting has been decided upon, I'll post the description in both the Campaign Info and Gameplay Threads. Then we can begin a little roleplaying!

You may treat this as a one-shot for your character, or a campaign if you'd like to invest.

First things first... medieval fantasy? Gods and goddesses? Mountains and forests? Evil sorcerers? A tribe of magical golems in the desert? Space manta rays? Give me some ideas.

Hey there!! If you want people to join, usually you open up the "recruitment" thread to get people to submit characters! If you already know who you want to invite that wont be necessary!

Hey! It's TThrowaway here!

Yeah, I'll open up a Recruitment depending on how many people who said they were interested actually show up. If all of them do we won't need more people.

Awesome!

Hey. For setting I'd be up for anything. Was there anything you had in mind?

I'm not familiar with Character Formatting on these boards, but for now we could do it like this. Here's a Level 1 character a friend of mine might play.

Name: Grynth
Life: 44/44 (Toughness: 11)
Brawn: +2 | Finesse: +3 | Mind: +1 | Spirit: -1
Block: +4

Signature: Dragon's Breath

Grappling Hook (Artifice)
Student of the Battlefield (Warfare)
Lashing Tail (Dragon)
Scales Like Tenfold Shields (Dragon)

Equipment:
Short Sword (Melee Weapon)
High-Squire Armor (Heavy)
Shield
Adventurer's Pack
20 gold

Grynth is a lizardman knight for hire who's rumored to be cursed. It's said that he does mercenary work to fund his travels around the countryside looking for a cure for his divine malady.

ButchersBrew wrote:

Nothing planned specifically. Here are a few ideas.

Well, in my Dungeon World campaign that sort of fell apart recently, it was a "Points of Light" inspired medieval setting. The basic gist: a shattered kingdom, demons roam the countryside in the wake of a foggy civil war. The culture was a fusion of Western European and East Asian tropes. Hired knights/samurai were known as high squires, armor was a mixture of plated, chainmail, and lamellar. Lords ruled, but honor could be gained to become a noble.

Then there is The City. I'm a big fan of the Thief series, and The City is a sprawling nightmare of poor city planning. It's a constant political battleground for the Baron, the Hammerite Religion, the Merchants, and of course the Thieves. Right next to the harbor, it's prone to things like ships carrying in zombies and subterranean sahuagin invasions.

And we could do something like Planescape, where there's sort of a "hub" of multiverses. This would be good if people wanted to play vastly different characters from really different backgrounds. You could hop from portal to portal, world to world, following some ridiculous trail that I'd weirdify to make sense. Honestly this might be the truest to Tavern Tales.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I love your description of The City. We should use things from that idea.

Also I started playing Planescape Torment recently, became obsessed with Sigil, and I just ordered the Manual of the Planes.

So I'm really digging these ideas so far. Have you thought about how direct or sandboxy you want the game to be?

M Human Gutter Runner / Messenger

Benjamin Brannigan (Ben)

  • Street Urchin.
  • Messenger and Runner for local mafia/thieves guild.
  • Fights with paired knives, preferably hidden (karambit, balisong (butterfly knives), or switchblades)

Passive: Tracking.FleetFooted - Ignore all difficult terrain. Haste (double move) 3 times per combat.

Traits:

  • Combat: Tracking.Assault - Describe attacking with multiple weapons -> roll twice and take best result
  • Exploration: Thievery.Lurker - Increase all rolls to sneak or hide
  • Interaction: Thievery.HonorAmongThieves - Increase rolls to socialize with thieves, vagabonds, scoundrels

Attributes

  • Finesse +3 - extremely subtle, agile, graceful, quick, deceptive, sneaky
  • Spirit +2 - very willful, charming, passionate, lucky
  • Mind +1 - slightly intelligent, observent, witty
  • Brawn -1 - not strong or intimidating

Toughness 10, Life 40

Gear: (start with 100 gold)

  • 2 karambit knives (20) (up sleeves)
  • 2 butterfly knives (20) (in pockets)
  • 4 throwing knives (40) (in belt)
  • adventurers pack (10) - bedroll, rope, candles, etc. (blanket tied to a stick, hobo-style)
  • lockpicks (10)

Aesthetics:

  • Dressed in loose fitting short clothing for maximum mobility.
  • Usually dirty and unkempt
  • Smells of the gutter
  • Very skinny

Motivation: AKA Why are you in this group?

Given the nature of Ben's work, thieves guild courier, he often gets into trouble. Sometimes he has to lay low or disappear. Other times, he just smells opportunity. This group of adventurers might be onto something. There's opportunity here. Cash money.

This is aby55 from the reddit thread. I think the Points of Light and the Thief settings both sound cool. I haven't played Planescape Torment so I can't comment on that.

Wow Ben, that character looks GREAT! One question... where's your Signature Trait? ;)

I think we'll use The City as the setting. If anyone plays a character with the Faith Theme, they can name a local religion or two. I don't want to use Hammerites verbatim.

EDIT: In reply to your question, Butcher, this is generally how I run campaigns.

  • Your first "quest" will be a job that I drop you all in the middle of. You're to try and complete the job. Just work with me on it. This is to let you all test group dynamics and the system. It's also to let me test the system.
  • After that it's sandbox time. You can explore the setting all you like.
  • I'll have a lot of hooks around relating to character backgrounds, player interests, and general feedback. If you ever feel lost I am not doing my job correctly.

Always give me feedback! Tell me whether there are too many ghosts, too much dialogue, not enough whoopee cushions...

Also, let's try and have character sheets/ideas up by Saturday. I think I'll bold that.

Try to have character ideas up by Saturday! :)

I'm not familiar with any of these settings but they all sound very awesome. I'm not big on playing wacky-high-fantasy characters, so the fantasy bit of my character is probably going to be subtle. I've got in mind a human who uses some sort of very subtle rune-magic to enhance his weapons/armor. For some reason I've got a hankering for javelins and a short-sword (greco-roman stuff, covered in runes, maybe my character is the descendant of some ancient broken/forgotten culture?). I've made a few characters recently who are driven completely by utilitarian ideals, so I'm going to have to think of something else for this guy as far as personality (though I might cave and just do that again because it is very fun and challenging)! Any input would be greatly appreciated!

For those of you that haven't used the Paizo forums before, you can make an alias for your character that lives under your account. You can click on my name/picture to pull up my profile, then click the alias tab to see what I mean. There you'll find a few characters I've used in Play by Posts before! This makes it so there's plenty of room to write about your character somewhere accessible (so all your information isn't only in a forum post somewhere).

I'm excited for this! :D

Male Human Ex-Soldier (Warfare, Artifice, Bardic Lore)
QuickCrunch™:

Meet Quintis

Life: 40/40 (Toughness: 10)
Themes: Warfare, Artifice, Bardic Lore, Command
Brawn: +3 | Finesse: +2 | Mind: +1 | Spirit: -1
Block: 2 (3 w/ shield)

Signature: Jack-of-all-trades

Combat: Charged Device (Artifice)
Coordinated Attack (temporary; Command)
Exploration: From Myth (Bardic Lore)
Interaction: Iron Sharpens Iron (Warfare)

Equipment:
Short Sword (Melee Weapon)
2 short spears (Ranged Weapon)
Legionnaire's Cuirass (Heavy)
Scutum Shield
Adventurer's pack

Appearance: graying hair, grizzled strong veteran, exotic (roman-esque) equipment, rune-covered weapons and armor.

At 42 years old, Quintis is the grizzled veteran. He's put in his time as a soldier and retired, but hd didn't stay retired for long. Quintis is a master of storytelling and he knows the legends of his people and his new home better than anyone, and he desperately wishes that he had become an adventurer instead of a soldier. He thought being a soldier would get him the glory he craved, but he realized that becoming a great general or hero had more to do with birth than drive or skill. Adventurers though, they get by without the bureaucracy. Adventuring is a profession where the great rise to the top (or so he tells himself, neatly forgetting that he used to feel the same way about being a soldier).

[Quintis either belongs to a long-forgotten culture, or emulates it, or is of some marginalized people] From the traditions of this people he's gathered a great number of legends and myths, and the subtle power of runes carved onto his weapons and armor. Most people in the military thought it was some sort of silly superstition. Quintis himself doesn't know whether it's "real" or not, but it's worked out for him so far, and it's something he enjoys, so he sees no reason to stop preparing his weapons in the traditional fashion.

Nice! Any of those three cultural backgrounds will work. The history of the City is shrouded in mystery. Funny you've gone with runes, as in the Thief games, runes (glyphs) are a big part of the story and the game. It fits in perfectly.

Also, I've updated the Campaign Info page with some Posting Rules and some Setting Information. It won't be complete until everyone posts their character, but after that we should be able to start in earnest.

So, is this a good place to look for lore with regard to background?

Maybe he served in the Baron's army, and was raised in the tradition of the precursors (apparently there already is an ancient fallen empire in the world; handy! can we make this civilization roman themed? I haven't played the game but it seems they were Egyptian flavored. I can do that, but if it's all the same to you, roman would be neat). I don't know what it means that the glyphs are semi-sentient, if that's important then maybe the precursors used really primitive ones that don't move/change/etc?

So would it be cool with you if we re-skinned the precursors slightly, and if my character was raised by a family that for generations has maintained the culture of the precursors?

I've updated Quintis' character page to reflect these changes :D

BTW: This is plexsoup from reddit.

My signature trait is:

Tracker, from Tracking (duh).
Increase all rolls to track
Perfect direction
1/quest name something you seek - GM tells you where to find it.

StJohn: All of that is fine, because I'm not using the "real" City. This is just inspired by the Thief setting. A lot of it is paralleled, but when we put the setting under a microscope it'll probably be quite different. I'll update the Campaign Information thread to reflect your stuff. Semi-sentient just means that the glyphs sometimes affect the world on their own accord. You can use the glyphs, and sometimes the glyphs can return the favor. This isn't common knowledge by the way. Only Quintus and anyone related to the Keepers/Precursors would know this.

FatCat: Nice character. Love it. Be prepared to take some Creative License with the Merchant's Guild. I've left them wide open for a reason.

plexsoup: Thanks for the update and welcome :)

Also: Once you're happy with your Character, post a "reporting in" post in the Gameplay thread. Like Quintus. It "adds" your character to the game.

plexsoup, you said you've never done this thing before, but you're doing everything right!

awesome! I eliminated a lot of the references, and just used "the Old Empire." I wouldn't mind if even Quintus didn't know that the glyphs are sentient! That could come as a wild surprise sometime down the line. I'm kind of imagining that he might be skeptical that they really do anything, but that it's important to him anyway (for what amounts to sentimental reasons).

I love everybody's characters :D Looks like we've got a thief's guild runner, a merchant's guild mercenary, and a retired soldier so far? Awesome.

Name: Trencius Artreda

As a young boy Trencius was raised in a temple of an order dedicated to the preservation of balance in the universe. He failed to become a paladin, but decided that he could benefit the order with different methods. He experimented with magic and eventually became a capable wizard in his own right.

When he was sixteen, a relic was stolen from the isolated temple in a burglary that killed three monks. Trencius knew he could not combat the syndicate that had taken this precious artifact alone, so after two years of preparation and study, he forged a contract with a devil and underwent a metamorphosis. Black raven-feathered wings tore out of his back and he gained new power so that he could finally have justice.

He returned the artifact to the temple, killing many thieves in the process, but was exiled from the temple and had his wings broken as punishment for using such violent methods and communing with an entity of evil.

Disillusioned with the order, Trencius, made his way to the city where he hopes to forge a new life for himself, creating his own ideals and mastering his new powers.

Wow. What kick-ass characters. I am allowed to say that on the boards?

Anyway, Butcher! Your character has human sized raven wings. You've got a bad rap with the Cloister and with the Thieves' Guild. Not only that, but you're a bit of an outcast. Not many people will want to deal with you with those giant raven wings. They're a bit of an oddity, and there's definitely that whole myth of the Flight of the Night Terror the night you took to the skies to retrieve the artifact.

If you're not against the idea, we should give you a Lair. Somewhere you roost without people knowing where you are and trying to torch you. Because some of those religious zealots would definitely do that. If you think that's cool, send me a private message and we'll work out the details. If not, just say so. I totally understand just wanting to skip the social stigma.

Okay. I'm gonna give the other guys interested in this an ultimatum tomorrow. If they don't post by the end of the day, we'll go right into it Saturday, because I can't wait to start running this.

If you'd all like to roleplay while we wait for the others to decide, you certainly may. It's a free-for-all in the Gameplay thread at the moment.

Okay, update time.

First, one of those guys will be joining us. He should have a character by tomorrow.

Second, Quintis also needs to have a Passive unless I'm blind.

Does Trencius normally keep his wings hidden?
I'm wondering what Ben would think of him on first sight.

I love the idea of having a lair. Additionally I think that I often conceal my wings under my large coat, when I have to be inconspicuous. I have actually been working on some art for my character so that will be fun.

Part of my punishment is my broken wings so that accounts for why the rules say that they are currently only giving my safe fall, but after they heal I will be able to fly.

Could my lair be located in an abandoned building? I picture a clock tower.

Cool.

I'm getting a Batman vibe from Trencius. When you show your wings, you're recognized as the Night Terror. Syndicate thugs recoil in terror. That sort of thing.

Does that sound right?

Meet Lupus Lanatus

Lucius was still a boy when his parents died of disease. He was taken in by a merchant friend of the family who felt he could put Lucius's ability with words and numbers to good use or so he claimed. Lucius didn't mind the work and was grateful for food to eat and a place to stay. However, as he grew older he found he was more interested in the information he could glean from the merchant's business than in he was in the business itself. Using his access to the books and his job for the merchant he began to feed his curiosity about people more rich and powerful than himself. Now a young man he has left the merchant's guild and began to seek adventure going by the name Lupus Lanatus. So far his thirst for adventure has mostly manifested itself in work on the wrong side of the law where he deals in stolen goods, information, and the odd bit of violence.

I'm flattered by the batman interpretation, but Trencius doesn't really fit with the ethical code part of that persona.

Plus he's a lot less driven than batman. He's not starting any fights in his current mental state.

I completely forgot! He's got Ablative Armor now, making him a pretty serious tank. I'm not sure if this is optimal, because I want to use the throwing spears first in general, but that's ok, it's fun anyway. It was either that, boost morale, or "battle ready," which are really good, but I think I prefer the flavor of this (glyphs on his armor protecting him but growing a little weaker as the battle continues). Looks like we've got another awesome addition to the gang! :D

Indeed! Nice looking character, aby55.

Butcher: Yeah, the old clock tower in the south end of the Bazaar will work. It broke ages ago, and they built a new one when they moved the main plaza north, toward the North Quarter. Besides, the old clock tower is rumored to be haunted. Funny you chose that, because that's the main character's hideout in the latest Thief game.

Cool. I think my lair is outfitted with a small library of magic texts, a desk with paper and ink, and a bed made out of hay.

Also I'm really enjoying this so far. The setting and the PCs especially.

Trencius, I'd say an electrical amp would be possible to build for the purposes of music, but I'm not sure rock'n'roll is appropriate. Maybe some sort of classical grunge fusion.

Cool. Do you think that rock wouldn't exist at all? Or it just wouldn't represent the vibe of the city well?

Maybe just not big enough yet. Obviously there can't NOT be rock. I won't disallow that. Probably in some shady hipster corner of Hartscourt you've got a few bands like The Clash or Jet or Blink 182 or whatever. But the City is strange, it's alien to us. The nobles in North Quarter want their music rooted in noble tradition. And the roots, the first roots, the ones that are stuck into the primordial rock of the world, are really, really weird.

That reminds me to note about a couple of things.

Electricity: is definitely used throughout the City. Not nearly as much as today. Batteries aren't really a thing. Mages and Artificers use magic and runes to power things, though. Streetlamps, mostly. The nobles might have some sort of air conditioning. It's not as "reliable" as "our" electricity though. Magical anomalies occur.

Gunpowder: isn't really a thing. Bombs, maybe. But guns never really took off. There might be a few muskets lying around somewhere, but magic trumps flintlocks. A shortbowman can fire an arrow quicker and more accurately than a rifle can fire a pellet. And the arrow is much easier to enchant. Crossbows are common.

Great start! I'm enjoying the game so far.

Koolaid, let me know if I take too many liberties with NPC's and plot hooks. I'm used to improv where anything anyone says becomes canon. That's a bit different from RPGs where the GM has ultimate authority.

Lupus, I figure we know each other from thieves guild tasks. I'd like to think you're the one person I can trust in the guild.

So what is the Syndicate? Is it part of the lore? I mean I got a sense of what they are from the story so far just wondering

Yeah I'm cool with Lupus knowing Benjamin but I was thinking Lupus would be independent at this point, not part of a guild per se. I hope that is fitting with the setting, I don't know if The City is one where all thieves are in the guild or else

Sounds good, Lupus.

Regarding the syndicate: I introduced them because of something in Trencius' background. I figured he'd be well known to them. He did a deal with a devil and then killed a whole bunch of "syndicate".

Maybe it's a different syndicate. :)

I also assumed that the Syndicate was at odds with the more european-traditional thieves guild. But maybe there's more than two factions.

In any case, Koolaid was kind enough to run with it and flesh them out some more. So it's canon now.

plex, I'm cool with running with things. The City is the sort of setting that is big enough that everyone can have Creative License. To a point, of course. If you said that a magical cake dragon exploded with confetti out of the box that Ben has and got everyone soooooo hiiiiiigh you won the quest, I would have to reject that.

But you guys are awesome, and are doing things that are completely in the spirit of The City.

If there's anything that I don't want anyone to mess with, I'll make sure I let you all know with an OOC note.

Lupus: There are tons of "Thieves' Guilds" in the City. The City is huge. The places I've listed in the Campaign Info thread is not an exhaustive list. It will expand. Furthermore, the Syndicate is just one more of those criminal gangs, with an East Asian flair. Doesn't mean too much unless you want it to mean something. And there's tons of room for "independent contractors". Some are just lowlifes who fence their goods to whichever black marketer is closest, and some are very intelligent, highly skilled individuals who not only use their talents as a free agent between different criminal groups, but also trade information for money, too. Imagine if you dropped the location of a Syndicate meet to a Thieves' Guild rep... if the information was right, you'd get a good cash in when the Guild raids their little tea party for all the stolen goods they can get.

And this is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to The City.

M Human Gutter Runner / Messenger

Now we NEED a magical cake dragon that explodes with confetti and makes everyone high.

So yeah, that's happening.

If you guys ever trip on acid collectively, it will happen. I'm already working on it.

Furthermore, I've updated the Campaign Information thread yet again with some stuff on People. That will get updated to include some religious factions in The Cloister and the Druids in the sewers.

Okay, even more updates.

  • Firstly, that other guy has decided not to participate after all. This still leaves us with a good sized group, and you all have fantastic characters.
  • I had some trouble with posting earlier. Edits I had made got reverted. The Note is signed by someone calling themselves Jacknall, and there's a paw symbol inked next to the name. He's a higher ranked Syndicate, so it's okay if you've heard of him, but he's not someone you've ever met. Obviously if one of you wanted the note to read something else it'll be redacted and I'll use Jacknall spmewhere else.
  • Finally, what timezones are you all in? I'm GMT-5, EST.

I'm GMT-5 too!

By other guy you mean your friend who was incoming or someone who already joined?

Sounds great

I'm PST

M Human Gutter Runner / Messenger

PST here too.

(PbP is weird, waiting several days to resolve one incident. So much different from face to face.)

Heh. Surprised Quintis didn't say he knew the Atus family.

The other guy hadn't posted yet. Not a big deal.

And yeah, PbP can be strange. Each action carries a lot more weight due to the timeframe of posting. Luckily for the GM, it means we have more time to think in between actions. Not seeing your faces makes it difficult to judge how the game is going, though.

Let's see how this one resolves and we'll either continue the thread or jump to something more interesting. Once everyone is comfortable we really need to test the system. Combat, Exploration, Interaction. Speaking of the system, how does everyone feel about the incoming update? It sounds like Passives are disappearing, so if we choose to stay current with the rules, we might have to revisit Traits.

I'm GMT - 04:00.

If it helps, Koolaid, I'm really enjoying the game. I'd love a little more description of the city though, that's the only thing.
