This game is bad juju.

The bad juju started with Riuk's Perception checks. He had one to notice them before they noticed him and two more to notice them while they were buffing. Their ACs would be a lot more managable without the buffs; now the problem is compounding.

I'm not blaming anybody; I'm just saying that's where the bad luck started. Regardless of whose bad luck it was, it was bad luck that got y'all in this mess.

Yeah, Riuk... Then you had the audacity to go on vacation, with a wife! And sight seeing?! Really?! LOL.

Falgard is up, followed by Mattock, Riuk, Trask, and Morg.

HP- 18/18 ; AC 16, touch15, flat-footed 13 // F 4 R 4 W 6 // Today's Resistance Fire 5 // Sense Motive 6, Perception 6

Do we try to finish this or assume that they've had enough? And have we've blown our secrecy? Mattock delays to see if we're going to pursue.

"It was awful hard to make them out. Bad light -- and some kind of camouflage."

Male Medium humanoid (dwarf) Male dwarf monk (monk of the empty hand) 1/skald 1

As they run off

"Get back here you runtish bastards!"

Are we going after them?

In response to Mattock

"Aye, couldn't really tell."

If it helps make your decision, they're running in the direction from which you came, back towards Bodekgrim.

Male Dwarf Monk 1/Rogue 1 | 20/20 | AC 19/15/17 | F 4/R 7/W 5 | Init +3 | Perc +8

Stop them! Spies or... assassins!

Nobody's disputing Morg, so I guess you're chasing?

Falgard wades across the river, and Riuk's arrows go wide.

Mattock, Trask, and Morg are up. Keep in mind, if you're crossing the river, that it counts as difficult terrain. It's not moving fast enough for you to need to make Swim checks, though.

Male Dwarf Monk 1/Rogue 1 | 20/20 | AC 19/15/17 | F 4/R 7/W 5 | Init +3 | Perc +8

Morg grabs his crossbow, loading it. Drawing his dagger would take too long.

HP- 18/18 ; AC 16, touch15, flat-footed 13 // F 4 R 4 W 6 // Today's Resistance Fire 5 // Sense Motive 6, Perception 6

Mattock brushes past Tinker in pursuit. He runs along the bank. His arms pump and legs piston and his feet fall with heavy thumps as he tries to keep up, but it is no use. His quarry starts to pull away. He reaches for his dagger and casts it at the enemy's back.

Dagger, long range: 1d20 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (14) + 2 - 4 = 12 ... damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

can't get in range for burning hands.

Trask grabs his crossbow from his travel bag.

a full round to go to the bag and grab the crossbow?

Yes. The enemies are up, but resolving their turns is going to take some map work (they're about to go off the north edge of the current map, so I'll post later when I have a chance to fix the map.

The enemy nearer Falgard pulls a vial off his belt and downs its contents as he moves away. The one farther away mumbles to himself, and its skin begins to shine like a torch. Ulfgar chases the enemy.

A new, larger map is up.

Correct answer! Give that Nalbrin a prize!

HP- 18/18 ; AC 16, touch15, flat-footed 13 // F 4 R 4 W 6 // Today's Resistance Fire 5 // Sense Motive 6, Perception 6

Mattock stares at the fleeing creature. He knows he's too slow to catch him. He has no spells readied with enough range either.

He splashes into the stream and up the far bank to search for his dagger.

Mattock, as a reminder, your bond object lets you cast any spell in your book 1/day; you could have cast magic missile if you wanted.

Mattock spots his dagger and moves closer to it. Riuk's second arrow fells the more distant opponent, and Trask moves closer to the action with his bow out, still singing his dwarven ditty. He takes a shot at the remaining creature. Trask's arrow catches the creature in the gut, and it falls to the ground.

See, the luck evens out after a while; that was two crits in one round. Combat over. You each earn 167 XP. Let me know what y'all want to do. I've had a couple of people express an interest in replacing Ulfgar, but nobody's submitted a character yet. The farther y'all travel, the harder it is to justify introducing another character.

Rolls:
Perception (MT): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13bow shot: 1d20 - 3 ⇒ (20) - 3 = 17 damage: 1d6 ⇒ 5 damage: 2d6 ⇒ (6, 2) = 8

Riuk claps his brother on the back

" you see that haha, that's how it's done boy. I mean we all have some trouble when they are close to us but my shots pull through as they ran away... How it goes sometimes I guess"

Breathing hard... I'm glad we triumphed, but that was too close. We coulda died... or worse, let them close to the king. Spies, you think? Assassins?

Morg checks if they dropped anything where they fell and asks for help pulling the bodies up to dry land and searches them.

loot, closer skulk:
short sword, 2 daggers, pouch w/75 gp

loot, further skulk:
short sword, 4 daggers, 3 vials of red liquid, 1 vial of bubbly white liquid, backpack with adventuring gear, spell component pouch, decorative gold object hanging from chain, book written in strange script I can't remember if any of you read Undercommon, and I'm too lazy to look :). Let me know if you do, though, pouch with w/79 gp

Male Dwarf Monk 1/Rogue 1 | 20/20 | AC 19/15/17 | F 4/R 7/W 5 | Init +3 | Perc +8

Morg knows Undercommon and Draconic. Was the potion they drank red or white?

HP- 18/18 ; AC 16, touch15, flat-footed 13 // F 4 R 4 W 6 // Today's Resistance Fire 5 // Sense Motive 6, Perception 6

Mattock retrieves his dagger and returns to the stream to help Morg. The whole time he keeps looking behind himself and left or right for more of the camouflaged menaces.

Over the bodies, Mattock says, "Spies or thieves. They got what they deserved. Nice shooting, Riuk, Trask."

"I don't know why they were here, but they probably weren't sent to kill us specifically. At least our mission is still secret. Their book might tell us more."

"Now let's see what else they have here..."

Detect magic + spellcraft on the loot. Numbers to right are the max caster level for which each roll succeeds
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (19) + 7 = 26 11
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12 fail
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16 1
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24 9

Thanks for the bonded item reminder, Sarpadian. With the slow pace of PbP, I often forget PC's abilities until I've used them a few times. I once had a barbarian in another game -- I forgot about rage until our third combat, which had me desperately searching my character sheet for options because it was starting to look like a TPK. It worked out. I switched on rage, got a couple lucky rolls, and so did the paladin.

Morg:
Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (6) + 8 = 14 You didn't notice which kind of vial the skulk drank from. The book is a holy text of a fire demon cult.

Mattock:
Only the vial of bubbly, white liquid and the decorative gold object give off magic auras. The aura on the gold object is very faint, though. Given your knowledge of magic, you surmise that it's the result of a spell having travelled through (or perhaps affected) the object, but it clearly is not magical in itself.

Male Dwarf Monk 1/Rogue 1 | 20/20 | AC 19/15/17 | F 4/R 7/W 5 | Init +3 | Perc +8

This is the holy or unholy text of some fire demon cult... ughh.

It doesn't bode well, but we need to move on.. He starts breaking camp.

Male Dwarf Monk 1/Rogue 1 | 20/20 | AC 19/15/17 | F 4/R 7/W 5 | Init +3 | Perc +8

Thanks for the hand and hymn.

Trask, in the ballads... Remember, I'm taller than most Dwarves, lean and nimble too. Morg grins sheepishly.

HP- 18/18 ; AC 16, touch15, flat-footed 13 // F 4 R 4 W 6 // Today's Resistance Fire 5 // Sense Motive 6, Perception 6

Mattock smiles as he concentrates on the items. "The liquid is some sort of magical potion, although I can't determine exactly what. The gold ornament has a faint trace of magic, probably a conduit, more commonly called a magical focus."

Male Dwarf Monk 1/Rogue 1 | 20/20 | AC 19/15/17 | F 4/R 7/W 5 | Init +3 | Perc +8

Back stabbing fire demon worshiping little fiend focused it on my arse, he did. This whole fiasco could have gone much worse, I suppose.

Just happy they ultimately didn't get by us. After some morning sustenance, Morg hefts his pack, ready to move.

Correction: actually, Mattock does know what the potion is; I just forgot to tell him. My bad :). It's a potion of cure light wounds.

HP- 18/18 ; AC 16, touch15, flat-footed 13 // F 4 R 4 W 6 // Today's Resistance Fire 5 // Sense Motive 6, Perception 6

"Just as importantly, they didn't get away to warn anyone about a party of dwarves leaving the south gate. As I said before, nice shooting."

"I wonder if the fire alerted them to us. Mayhap we should forego a campfire at night."

Male Dwarf Monk 1/Rogue 1 | 20/20 | AC 19/15/17 | F 4/R 7/W 5 | Init +3 | Perc +8

What's the world come to, when you can't even be warm and toasty marching into the jaws of certain mood?!

Mattock packs his things.

Whose going to carry the loot? Mattock could use a second dagger and the component pouch. They're going to put him back into heavy load with his pack on for a few days until he eats more food. We'll leave the bodies as a warning to others... Dwarves will not be trifled with. I'll carry the potion, thanks. My back still hurts from that eldritch bolt or whatever it was.

Filthy skulk. Best revenge is a job well done, brothers.

"Probably best if we split the coin now."

Mattock counts the gold out into piles, saying the name of each dwarf as he lays a new piece on each pile. "Ulfgard, Trask, Riuk, Tinker, Falgard, Mattock." 29 gp each

"I'm willing to bet the red vials are poison of one sort of another. If no one minds, I'll help myself to one of the other fellow's daggers. Grab what you can use. We probably won't see resupply for a long time."

The dwarf sits back and runs a hand in circles over his iron 'bellywarmer'.

Male Dwarf Monk 1/Rogue 1 | 20/20 | AC 19/15/17 | F 4/R 7/W 5 | Init +3 | Perc +8

Morg seems hesitant to take the coin. Doesn't feel right... But, I supposed gold is gold.

Good point about the camp, but they probably attacked us for our supplies and gear. Slovenly, cowards.

"Xo bury them and bee quick, Brother I know im not to be trifled with and I do not need to leave behind evidence of our passing for all to see and know we came this way...theirs a good girl Xo, now come on lad still a long journey and it only getting longer with you jabbering away like a scullery maid talking to a lord..."

After the quick burial Xo moves back to Riuk's side and they stand ready to depart

As Xo is burying the skulks' bodies, a dwarf comes into your field of vision. Ulfgar waves, seeming to recognize him. The newcomer motions for Ulfgar to come to him, and Ulfgar does so. They converse for a few moments, and then they come back towards the rest of the party. Ulfgar speaks up: "This is Rannock Deepdelver. He is one of my distant clanmates. He has come to inform me that my father has taken ill, and I'm needed back in Bodekgrim at once. Rannock will be taking my place." With that, he salutes the party and heads back towards the capital.

Thanks for your patience. We're moving on now.
