Lebris |
Bravely bold Sir Lebris rode forth from Camelot.
He was not afraid to die, O brave Sir Lebris!
He was not at all afraid to be killed in nasty ways,
Brave, brave, brave, brave Sir Lebris!
He was not in the least bit scared to be mashed into a pulp,
Or to have his eyes gouged out, and his elbows broken;
To have his kneecaps split, and his body burned away;
And his limbs all hacked and mangled, brave Sir Lebris!
His head smashed in and his heart cut out
And his liver removed and his bowels unplugged
And his nostrils raped and his bottom burned off
And his pen--
Brave Sir Lebris ran away.
Bravely ran away, away!
When danger reared its ugly head,
He bravely turned his tail and fled.
Yes, brave Sir Lebris turned about
And gallantly he chickened out.
Bravely taking to his feet
He beat a very brave retreat,
Bravest of the brave, Sir Lebris!
He is packing it in and packing it up
And sneaking away and buggering up
And chickening out and pissing off home,
Yes, bravely he is throwing in the sponge...
DM RyckyRych |
Dave surprisingly backs away from a fight, instead looking to defend himself from any future onslaught!
Save!: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15
Morgran's weak spell fails to do anything effective against the target! Meanwhile, the hobgoblins move forward with confidence against the cowardly party!
Longsword vs Morgran: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22 for Damage: 1d8 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8 plus Martial Advantage: 2d6 ⇒ (6, 1) = 7
Longsword vs Dave: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23 or 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11
Longsword vs Dave: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (13) + 3 = 16

2. Lebris (save needed)
3. Durnn
4. Morgran (prone, dying, need death save) and Dave (-2)
5. Hobgoblins
6. Feyce (need Charisma save)
Morgran takes a savage blow to the head, falling unconscious!
Feyce Mellitur |
Charisma? That's where I'm a Viking!
Charisma Save: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19
DM, are either of the hobgoblins surrounding me (Durnn or Hobgoblin 3) wearing metal armor?
Feyce Mellitur |
This is not purely an academic question. I am told by John that one of them is wearing splint armor but unsure whether that counts as "metal armor" for purposes of Shocking Grasp. I could not find anything on the Internets about this.
Actually, I guess it is an academic question because I just noticed that, even if I hit HG3 or Durnn with Shocking Grasp, I still would take an AoO from the other one if I try to move. So it still would be helpful to know but it will not affect my decision here.
Feyce Disengages and moves into the smaller room.
Good luuuuuuuck Daaaaaaave... Feyce yells on his way out the door.
Dave the Bellicose |
Dave nods toward a thick tome of obscure lore as Feyce runs past him.
The actual text of the spell specifies:
"You have advantage on the attack roll
if the target is wearing armor made of metal."
...rather than "metal armor" as the Elf inquired.
Splint. This armor is made of narrow vertical strips
of metal riveted to a backing of leather that is worn over
cloth padding. Flexible chain mail protects the joints.
DM RyckyRych |
I'd agree that splint has sufficient metal for the Shocking Grasp to get the effect. The other hobgoblins are wearing chain mail and carry shields.
Feyce runs away! Grenl sees the fighter as the largest threat and decides to go in for the knockout blow!
Inflict Wounds: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (5) + 3 = 8
Obviously fearing for his own safety the shaman makes a poor effort. He then backs away from the fight. Bonus Action to Disengage.
Erky decides he must do something and tries to strike the hob leader with a spell!
Dex!: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17
However the spell fails to affect the stout Durnn!

Lebris sees his arrow deflect off his target's armor! Durnn then sets his sights on the shifty Dave!
Attack at +4: 2d20 ⇒ (3, 20) = 23
Durnn thinks his times his attack perfectly, however the fighter's skill deceives the leader and causes him to miss badly!

Feyce Mellitur |
Is Morgran the only one of us with healing? I might have to consider multi-classing into bard. Or perhaps Dave could splash a level of paladin for Lay on Hands.
Dave the Bellicose |
Sighing in relief at his tremendously good fortune, Dave arches an eyebrow at the be-splinted hobgoblin.
With greater Total Situational Awareness™ than even Sterling Archer, Dave quickly assesses the tactical options and acts.
Disengaging he steps over the body of his fallen comrade in square 1, and into square 2 where he interacts as a free action with the dwarf and grips him tightly. Morgran and his own armor are roughly 20 pounds over his carrying capacity and his speed thus drops to 5 (PHB176).
He continues for 5 more feet though the door and drags the dwarf to square 3.
DM RyckyRych |
The door does swing in toward the smaller room but it does not have a method for it to be barred.
Dave drags the dwarf to temporary safety! The hobgoblins bicker among themselves and rush the doorway!
vs Dave: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18 for Damage: 1d8 + 2 - 3 ⇒ (8) + 2 - 3 = 7
vs Dave: 1d20 + 3 - 2 ⇒ (8) + 3 - 2 = 9
vs Dave: 1d20 + 3 - 2 ⇒ (12) + 3 - 2 = 13
The first enemy strikes Dave in the shoulder close to the neck while the others are impeded by the frame of the doorway!

Dave the Bellicose |
I'm a little busy holding the door, but we DO have five vials of oil and an elf with Firebolt.
Oil: Oil usually comes in a clay flask that
holds 1 pint. As an action, you can splash
the oil in this flask onto a creature within 5 feet of you or
throw it up to 20 feet, shattering it on impact. Make a ranged
attack against a target creature ar object, treating the oil as
an improvised weapon. On a hit, the target is covered
in oil. If the larget takes any fire damage before the oil
dries (after 1 minute), the target takes an additional 5
fire damage from the burning oil. You can also pour a
flask of oil on the ground to cover a 5-foot-square area,
provided that the surface is leveI. If lit, the oil burns for
2 rounds and deals 5 tire damage to any creature that
enters the area or ends its turn in the area, A creature
can take this damage only once per turn.
Throwing risks a miss, but perhaps Erky could pour some into the doorway he's adjacent, while the Elves shooty-shoot.
DM RyckyRych |
No, Dave wouldn't have had an action to close it anyway. With the melee going on at the doorway now I would rule it couldn't really be done anyway.
DM RyckyRych |
Its the way the map was set up with dynamic lighting and such. It takes into account hard corners and such but doesn't handle open doors too well. I'll see if I can do something about it.
DM RyckyRych |
Feyce is still up!
DM RyckyRych |
Feyce strikes the hobgoblin right in the chest with a spell! The shaman then steps up and tries to poison the fighter!
Poison Spray: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12
Erky disengages from the battle and moves around to try and aid the fallen cleric! Does he have a potion on him? Where does he keep it?
I will assume that everyone would know if he does so if you have one Morgran just let us know.
1. Grenl (-8)
2. Erky and Lebris
3. Durnn
4. Morgran (prone, dying, need death save (1-0)) and Dave (-9)
5. Hobgoblins (#1 @ -6)
6. Feyce
DM RyckyRych |
I'll be spotty in the next couple of days as I've taken a trip out to Horseshoe Bay to play some golf.
Lebris ends the shaman goblin's life! Erky prepares to aid the dwarf! He used his action to Disengage, it'll be next turn so I still need a death save.
Durnn growls to his charges and seems to be waiting on a response!
1. Grenl (dead)
2. Erky and Lebris
3. Durnn (ready)
4. Morgran (prone, dying, 1-0 on death saves) and Dave (-9)

Dave the Bellicose |
Wary of the Hobgoblin Chief, Dave assumes a defensive stance to hold the door.
YOU!
SHALL!!
NOT!!!
PAAAAASSS!!!!
Dodge.
Bonus Action:
Second Wind: 1d10 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
[Sad Trombone]
DM RyckyRych |
Morgran can roll his death save to see if he manages to roll a 20 and wake up.
The first hobgoblin in the doorway snarls at Dave but then steps back and Disengages in order to allow his leader to charge the fighter!
Longsword at +4: 2d20 ⇒ (18, 3) = 21
Dave's defenses hold fast against the leader's assault! The other hobgoblins see if they can get lucky!
Longsword at +3: 2d20 ⇒ (17, 3) = 20
Longsword at +3: 2d20 ⇒ (15, 18) = 33
One of the hobgoblins catches Dave at the right moment, however the door frame gets in the path of the sword just enough to cause the blow to deflect off armor!
Erky tries to help the fallen cleric!
Medicine: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10 Just enough!
1. Feyce, Erky and Lebris
2. Morgran (prone, stable) and Dave (-9)
3. Hobgoblins (#1 @ -6)
Lebris |
Lebris seeing the hobgoblin step up pulls out a flask of oil and throws it at the hobgoblin in front of Dave.
The oil should cover the 5ft square that he is in.
Feyce, can you light him up?
Feyce Mellitur |
Just so I don't slow things up, I'll aim at the hobgoblin in front of Dave:
Fire Bolt: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18 for Damage: 1d10 ⇒ 10
DM can decide whether that hits the hobgoblin or floor or whatever.
DM RyckyRych |
Well, the hobgoblin is already in the square you want to hit so I will rule that Lebris must hit him with a ranged attack with an improvised weapon (so no proficiency bonus included).
Lebris |
knowing he was heavily armored, Lebirs had planned to ignite the square he's standing in, figuring the flames would begin to lick up on him. Reading the information on the oil from above, lighting the square would burn him for 2 rounds for 5 points each.
but here's an attack to get him
flask of oil: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
DM RyckyRych |
Read my Discussion thread about the oil thing and you guys can then decide what you want to accomplish with the oil. We'll simply retcon from there.
Lebris |
Have read the discussion
Lebris at first would have tried to avoid getting anywhere hear the hobgoblin knowing he wasn't armored enough to stand up to him.
Lebris would have thrown the first flask of oil trying to him/square. Lebris was hoping that Feyce would then hit the hobgoblin with a fire bolt to light him up. That was the plan, so if the flask went wide which I would assume it did, Feyce would still have thrown the firebolt at the hobgoblin.
Lebris will re-evaluate his action for the next round, if he lives that long.
so by reading the posts, Lebris's flask shot goes wide, and hopefully Feyce hits the hobgoblin with a firebolt of 18 doing 10 fire damage
DM RyckyRych |
OK then!
Lebris throws the oil flask but misses Direction?: 1d8 ⇒ 2 as it deflects off of the target before shattering behind him! Feyce then sends a spell at the enemy but narrowly misses as well! Yep, his AC is 19!
Feyce, Erky, Lebris, Morgran (prone, stable but unconscious) and Dave (-9)
Hobgoblins (#1 @ -6)
Dave the Bellicose |
Dave continues to deny the fiends access to his companions!
HOOOOOO-DOOOOOOOOOORRRRRR!!!!!!!!
Dodge. Also note, Dave recovered a paltry (but potentially life-saving) 2 HP from his Second Wind last turn.
DM RyckyRych |
Ah yes, so he did!
The hobgoblins are unhappy that the fighter isn't willing to fight! The leader decides that the best solution may be the push his way through the door! He is going to use his action to try and shove you back from the door. Let the contest begin!
Hobgoblin Athletics: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10 The great Dave should be able to beat that with his own Athletics or Acrobatics check (you choose).
When this is resolved I'll then finish the hobgoblin's turn.
Feyce, Erky, Lebris, Morgran (prone, stable but unconscious) and Dave (-7)
Hobgoblins (#1 @ -6)
DM RyckyRych |
The other hobgoblins try to strike Dave again as the fighter holds fast within the doorway!
Attack at +3, take worst roll: 2d20 ⇒ (8, 14) = 22
Attack at +3, take worst roll: 2d20 ⇒ (5, 9) = 14
The attempts are weak at best!
Party up!
Lebris |
Lebris will circle around and splash the flask of oil onto the the hobgoblin. If I'm reading the discussion post correctly, Lebris can splash it on him without making an attack roll.
Feyce
Seeing the oil splashed on the hobgoblin, Feyce will attempt another firebolt.
Fire Bolt: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21
damage: 1d10 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
The +5 here is for the oil burning damage.
Just in case. If deemed, Lebris meeds an attack roll
Flask of oil: 1d20 ⇒ 20
damn, what a way to blow a crit
DM RyckyRych |
No, you need to hit him with it if you want it to splash onto him. With that roll you did so brilliantly.
Lebris and Feyce team up to severely burn the hobgoblin leader! Erky continues to aid Morgran! He doesn't have any gear so he'll stay out of trouble.
Feyce, Erky, Lebris, Morgran (prone, stable but unconscious) and Dave (-7)
Hobgoblins (#1 @ -6, Durnn -16)
