Tales from the City of Opal

Game Master Patrick Curtin

This is my homebrew world Arcaia. This particular setting is the free city of Opal, a lush equatorial city set on the edge of an immense jungle rife with undead , ancient civilizations, and dinosaurs.

Izkrael breathes in deeply, testing his side, and the bandages. He then heads over to join the others. Getting there and seeing the prisoner is dead, he glances at the others briefly, then looks back down at the dead prisoner.

"As we are finished here, let us be away then."

Jemerae had had one of the large Zapatec style swords, with serrated teeth along a flattish blade, the hilt wrapped in sharkskin with a red stone in the pommel. similar to the Macuahuitl but made of steel. Consider as a bastard sword for stats.

The weresharks had tridents made of some sort of coral tipped with obsidian barbs. All together the corpses render up 500 GP in various coins. Jemerae also has an golden cloak broach with the House Akkavin shark jaw symbol worked in mother of pearl. in his pocket is an onyx shark figurine done in lovely detail. He also wears a small stone pendant on a rawhide thong. The pendant is a swirl of abstract lines, but seems to represent a shark as well.

Standing next to Sanvoros, Citlati studies him for signs of injury, before doing the same for the rest of their companions.

Male Half-elf Ranger / 6 (Falconer)

Egan moves on with the others, alert as usual, and watches as the corpses are searched.

"Can any detect the presence of magic among these items"?

Elf Magus 5

Magnus smirks, almost managing t looked abashed. (But not quite.)

"Sorry, I don't usually study detection charms. I can prepare it when we get a chance to take a nap." He grins.

. Kessel sees nothing out of the ordinary, except for some blood on the floor and the ajar door at the rear

Kessel moves towards the open door, waiting for a front line fighter to take the lead, ready to lend aid if needed.

Elf Magus 5

Sorry, I'm used to playing wizzies! ;P

Magnus waves San and Izk to join him, then steps forward, rapier appearing smoothly in his hand once more,...

The door opens to the outside of the warehouse. A small platform looks out over a quiet nighttime street. There is a winch and tackle above the landing, sticking out with a crank attached near the door to let the rope up and down. A set of stairs descend to street level

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 5

Assuming he found nothing in the room, San comes up behind Magnus and Iz, and says, "OK, let's get out of here and hole up somewhere before the whole city starts looking for us."

Elf Magus 5

Magnus seems vaguely disappointed at the lack of opponents on the other side of the door. His rapier slides soundlessly back into it's slim sheath.

"Good idea." He agrees with San. Somewhat less verbose than usual, but he seems chipper enough.

Sorry I goofed here

San sees nothing of particular interest in the either room

Female Halfling Swashbuckler 6

"Works for me."

Elf Magus 5

Magnus looks at the winch and tackle wistfully, as if imagining himself swinging from it heroically. Then starts down the steps.

"Alright then, let's beat feet. back to the rooms?"

Male Elf Paladin/Ranger 4/1

Iz grimaces slightly as he feels at his injured side.

"Yes, let us be away."

"The late council of thugs back in that warehouse were speaking of kidnapping or killing us before we barged in, which suggests that they already are well aware of our arrival and are likely already targeted once the escaped men find the town guard. Even if the two can't remember us, aren't aware of all the details, or cannot give a description of the attackers, this is not a robust town, and so I'd think the local magistrate would simply hang any well armed strangers to be on the safe side. We will need to escape town. We should either try to take the ship tonight, perhaps in the confusion that will happen once our incursion has been discovered, or we will need to find a place outside of town to hide out."

Elf Magus 5

Magnus grins.

"Take the ship?!? Well now, I like that idea MUCH more than hiding! The cowards will likely expect us to run off to find a nice, safe spot to hide. Highly unlikely that they'd be expecting us to take the ship back right now! I'm in!"

The party decends to the street. The night is dark, and few people are about. The docks are a few blocks down. There is no sign of any hue and cry yet

Actions?

Elf Magus 5

Now that he has a destination and a purpose, Magnus seems to have regained his usual chipperness.

"Directly to the docks then? No need for sneaking if we're just out for a walk, right?" He grins.

Magnus walks a little in front of the rest probably with Egan trusting in Egan's sharp eyes and his own lightning reflexes to save him if they run into trouble.

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 5

San motions for Citlali to follow the rest, and then takes up the last spot, his bow drawn and ready and Ghostfetter back in it's sheath on his back.

Male Half-elf Ranger / 6 (Falconer)

Egan is eager to move out as well. He sends Whisperwing skyward, and ahead to scout out any danger.

So are we headed for Ghost, or for Green Razor?

Male Elf Paladin/Ranger 4/1

Izkrael takes up position behind Egan and Magnus.

Ghost sounds more like a vanishing ship to me. What say you good folks?

1d20+18 Perception

Whisperwing spies a large group of men gathering several blocks away from the warehouse

"The Green Razor is the ship we were sent to retrieve, whoever has the most silver tongue, take that pendent we took from about Jemerae's neck and use it to bluff past the guards, we may even use it to get the ship cast off from the pier. With luck we may get out of sight before the chase begins in earnest."

Male Half-elf Ranger / 6 (Falconer)

"We better do something fast. Whisperwing has spotted a large group of men gathering several blocks away".

Elf Magus 5

Magnus grins.

"Well,... I'm pretty charming when I want to be. But if we're looking for a true silver tongue, then I defer to you sir." Magnus gives Kessel a half-bow.

Magnus glances up, looking for Whisperwing, and smiles at Egan.

"What's the best way to get around them? No sense in announcing ourselves with a fight if we can avoid it."

He chuckles evilly.

"With any luck, Master Kessel can convince the ship's guards that the group you spotted are the people trying to retake the ship, and we were sent to get it safely out of reach."

His grin threatens to spread from ear to pointy, elvish ear.

"I love my job!"

Kessel has exactly one rank in bluffing, he's more of a poet, diplomat and priest rather then liar or bluffer, he's only got a +6 altogether to bluff

Elf Magus 5

oh, didn't realize that. Then Magnus may be our guy. He has +11 to Bluff. :) Making stuff up is kind of his thing. ;P

Magnus takes the pendant they 'rescued' from Jemarea and looks at it.

"Lead the way Master Egan. Avoid the large group. Let them chase us. By the time they catch up, I'll have those pirates eating out of my hand!" Magnus says cheerfully.

"Or eating steel." He adds as an afterthought. Still chipper.

Male Half-elf Ranger / 6 (Falconer)

"Whisperwing is smart, but I don't know if she's that smart. Perhaps it would be better to have someone take to the rooftops and scout ahead. Whisper wing can warn of danger".

Egan calls Whisperwing down, and tries to get her to pick a safe path, instead of seeking out the enemies.

1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19 Handle Animal.

Elf Magus 5

"Hey, as long as eagle-eyes there can tell us where they are, we just make sure we go where they're not." Magnus smiles.

1d20+6 Handle Animal.

Whisperwing takes to the air. Her keen eyes pick a path away towards the docks, far from the crowd of men

Male Half-elf Ranger / 6 (Falconer)

"This way. I think she gets it".

Elf Magus 5

"Good bird!" Magnus grins as he follows Egan's lead.

The party makes its way back to the docks quickly. They can hear the angry muttering of the mob that is a few blocks away, but it doesn't come near. They arrive at the House Akkavin pier. The Green Razor is still lashed up, but looks silent. Several Eastern Islanders guard the entrance to the long dock, and there are several other ships moored along it as well, some with crew onboard.

Elf Magus 5

Magnus eyes the Easterner Island guards, and the other occupied ships between them and their prize of the Green Razor.

"As much as I love a good scrap, I'd rather not face ALL of those at once. At least not in a FAIR fight." The elf smirks companionably, talking softly.

"And we need to get to the ship before our ardent admirers figure out where we went." He adds, chucking a thumb over his shoulder in the general direction they came from.

"So? Straight through? Walk in like we own the place, tell 'em some one got drunk and leaked the whole plan, and WE were sent to get the ship out of here before that 'unruly lynch mob' gets here?" Magnus grins evilly.

"Well? Whattya think? Go ahead, I don't mind critiques. I'm making this up on the spot." He whispers cheerfully.

The elf seems to be enjoying this situation entirely too much.

"We're talking the ship for Akkavin business," Kessel whispers as they walk, "We didn't take it sooner because we needed the say so from the local faction heads, I mean only family have that pendant and the very idea that we would have sailed into town and killed one of the local faction heads to get our hands on one is laughable. Clearly we're here for a secret mission. Time is of the essence and Jemerae is scrounging us up some crew that will join us, hopefully, before we cast off, but we may have to leave without them."

Sczarni

Female Human Oracle of the Heavens 6

Watching the conversation closely, Citlali speaks up. "I can create a distraction if we need one. A good one."

Elf Magus 5

"Good. Good! Yes, I like that." Magnus nods happily.

"Even better!" The swordsman grins one of his most charming smiles at Citali. "But make sure to save it for in case we REALLY need it." He taps his nose with a wink.

"Any other ideas? Yes? No?" Magnus looks at the others. He rubs his hands together with an evil-looking grin.

"I haven't had THIS much fun since I had to sneak out Mistress Romana's FRONT door in broad daylight!" He chuckles.

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 5

San sneers in the direction of the thugs. "I'd rather see 'em bleed, but truth be told, it probably would be better to get by 'em without fighting. On a side note, who here knows how to sail a ship? Should we try and locate the crew first?"

Female Halfling Swashbuckler 6

"We have any idea if the crew would be willing to cooperate?"

Elf Magus 5

"Finding the original crew, alive and well, would be best. BUT Even I'm not that optimistic." Magnus says wryly.

Male Half-elf Ranger / 6 (Falconer)

"I'm pretty good with rowboats, but know little about harnessing the winds".

The Laugh is also still in the harbor if you want to sneak out to it. You were never supposed to return the ship, just discover what happened to it

Elf Magus 5

OK, sorry, I've confused myself. (It a supernatural ability) Are we after the Green Razor? Or the Laugh? I thought we were supposed to find out what happened to it, AND return it if possible? Or we were strictly a fact-finding mission?

Bribes always welcome

Returning with it was an option, BUT....

Does anyone have Profession (sailor?), or any nautical-themed skills? Running a large merchant vessel on a skeleton crew would take a lot of skill to accomplish. You might be better off bringing word of Akkavin's shenanigans to your employer so that he can take the next steps

Bribes always welcome

You were after the razor. You sailed on the Laugh
