Tales from the City of Opal

Game Master Patrick Curtin

This is my homebrew world Arcaia. This particular setting is the free city of Opal, a lush equatorial city set on the edge of an immense jungle rife with undead , ancient civilizations, and dinosaurs.

Vilya's strike hits true, knocking a chip off the statue

Wasn't sure if it was a hit, considering my last attack roll.

Bribes always welcome

Round two:

Egan: 24 [hit]
Izkrael: 21 [pending]
Joleesa: 17 [pending]
Seven Eagle: 14 [Bardchant +1 ATK/DAM/HARM/FEAR]
Ten: 12 [miss]
Tobias: 11 [Magic missile]
Xipe Totec: 6 [Attacking]
Sanvoros: 5 [hit]
Vilya: [hit]

The skeletal statue roars and staggers as several of the attacks hit home. Its huge garnet eyes burn red as it squares off against Ten

OK, gonna let Iz and Jo have a chance to post, then I will DMPC them if nothing by tomorrow.

And I lied. Sorry folks, been a real pisser of an end of the week. Did Nathan/Iz drop out when I took my sabbatcial?

Iz and Jo both fail to impart any damage to the stony foe

Xipe Totec winds his claws up on Ten once again

1d20 + 10 ⇒ (10) + 10 = 202d10 + 5 ⇒ (7, 4) + 5 = 161d20 + 10 ⇒ (7) + 10 = 172d10 + 5 ⇒ (3, 10) + 5 = 18

Ouch ...

The thing's massive claws deliver a brutal one-two punch to the enlarged priest. He is slammed to the wall and collapses, bleeding profusely.

OK, new round. Post them actions!!

"Damn! That's what happens when priests play warrior!"

San continues to press his attack against the statue...

Nice shot!

San winds up and leaps, whirling Ghostfetter in a deadly arc. The blade parts a marble vertebrae, the grinning skull head flips off and smashes into pieces on the floor. The rest of the thing's body crashes down in a heap of rubble.

Congrats all! You know, it's been a while since I advanced you, and you've been fighting quite a bit. Take a level and we can roll on from here.

Male Half-elf Ranger / 6 (Falconer)

Egan draws another of the dwindling supply of exploding arrows (2-left), and fires another, making sure to keep his distance from it's flailing attacks.

Hunters bow w/exploding arrow (1d20+11=28)

Arrow damage (1d8+3=8, 1d6=2)

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 5

San immediately rummages through his pack to find one of his potions of cure light wounds, and pours it down Ten's unconscious throat. "It's not a fine ale, but hopefully this'll do the trick."

1d8 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

Male Human Sorcerer 5

"Alright, next time we see a giant idol of an evil god, how about we stay the hell away from it."

New level, you say? I'll get 1d6 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6 more HP. EDIT: And I do believe I'm done leveling up.

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 5

Pat, I think you had been giving us max hp before, right? Do we still get that, or are we rolling for the new level?

Male Half Orc - Half Human- Half Something Else (I know that is 3 halves, but he is a big chap) Cleric Level 4

"uuuuurrrggggghhhhhllllleeee" Ten Foot sees stars as he flies through the air and slams into the wall, loosing conciousness.

Some time passes, but Ten Foot is not sure how long it is in reality, he wakes up coughing, potion dribbling down his chin.

I think I am awake with that, my maths put me at -3, so I am on +2 now? Unless I am dead, that would suck, big time.

"I am going to need a beer after this," he grins at San, nodding his head in thanks and tries to stan up gingerly, checking him self for broken bones. He coughs up a bit of blood.

"Evil gods, they pack a punch eh?"

I will trade in my 2 second level spells for spontaneous CMW's

CMW 2d8 + 4 ⇒ (3, 3) + 4 = 10
CMW 2d8 + 4 ⇒ (8, 6) + 4 = 18

I am on 30 HP now by my maths and only have the following spells left:
1st Level
Bless
protection-from-evil
Bonus Wisdom: hide-from-undead
2nd Level 2+1(wis) +1(Domain)
Bonus Wisdom: consecrate
Domain: Bulls Strength

Posting will be patchy as I am having to look after the wife full time while she recuperate.

No worries Ten, take your time, you are still among the living. I was going to have 7E throw some healing your way too...

The party takes a moment to rest. Seven Eagle strums a lullaby that seems to help Ten's vicous wounds heal

CLW: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10

And San/Bryan is correct, max HP for the level. I am tossing high CR monsters at you

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 5

OK, San is done leveling. I'm guessing that he doesn't get his additional spell slots until we rest.

Male Half-elf Ranger / 6 (Falconer)

Sorry for the slow posting. Back now from a long business trip, so I'll pick things up starting tomorrow. I'll also level up Egan

Female Human Rogue/Swashbuckler 1/4

Yeah sorry about that Pat. I had (self inflicted) problems with my internet... :/

Seeing the thing fall to Sanvoros, Joleesa rushes over to Ten and kneels beside him. When Sanvoros comes over and administers the potion, she thanks him profusly when the big Priest stirs. She gives Tena mock punch in his over large shoulder as he wakes up, telling him to be more careful next time.
She makes her way over to the inert stone and pokes around in the leftover rubble, looking for anything worthwhile.
Perception Check: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19

I'll get Jo levelled up over the weekend, so I hope we don't have anymore fights until next week! ;)

Posting old description:

Spoiler:
The corridor keeps gently sloping, taking an occasional few steps further downwards underground. The party comes to a large square room. Corridors lead off of each wall. A large statue of a skeleton dancing draped in flayed human skins is rendered in red-veined white marble. Large garnets bracket its eyes, winking redly in the arcane light of San's sword. Below the statue is a shallow bowl heaped with bones and well-rotted offal. The stench and flies are noisome.

Jo spots the two melon-sized garnets winking in the shattered ruins of the skeletal statue's face. The statue's teeth also seem to be lozenge-shaped milky opals. There might be something in the large sacrificial bowl, if she was interested in poking through the rotted corpses ..

Take your time, I am real busy ATM folks so posting will be spotty ..

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 5

I have a list somewhere of our loot we've recovered, also. Now just to remember where it is, and add these gems ... how many of the opals do we find? And San has no problem using his sword to poke through the offal ...

Female Human Rogue/Swashbuckler 1/4

Joleesa raises the two huge stones in front of her and waves them in Vilya's direction with a "look what I found" grin on her face. Vilya scrambles over and starts picking the teeth from out of the mouth, a little disappointed that they don't shine in the light like the garnets.
Finished with the gems, she sheathes Raptorstrike and walks over to the sacrificial bowl. She looks inside and wrinkles her nose at the gore inside. Out of the corner of her eye she thinks ahe sees something under a rather dense slop of rotten flesh. Sighing, she rolls up her sleeves and holds her breath, poking around in the foul material.
Perception Check: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8

Male Half-elf Ranger / 6 (Falconer)

Egan stands back a couple of feet, holding his nose, and watches his friends dig through the offal.

Alright, leveled up.

On another not, I found these two illustrations on the DeviantArt account of one of my professors, and I thought they'd be relevant.

I like the pics Shiny/Vilya. Very close to what I was thinking..

There are ten milky opal lozenges in the statue's mouth. They look to be of really nice quality

Appraisal anyone??

Male Human Sorcerer 5

Tobias frowns and looks at the opals once their separated from the idol. "Well, at least they're valuable tainted gems."

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 5

OK, two garnets and 10 opals

San will look over the gems as well, and give a second opinion ...

appraise 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 18

Sorry for the delay in posting folks, lots going on ..

San:

Spoiler:
Sanvoros wagers the opals realistically could go for about 600 GP each. The garnets, maybe 3,500 each. 4K if they found the right buyer..

The subterranian room is quiet now. Occasionally a dim echo of a chirping or meeping sound can be heard coming from one of the hallways branching off.

Actions??

ACK! I did, mea culpa

Jo roots around in the carrion mess. It seems to be a rancid goulash of flayed human and animal bodies. The smell is extremely noxious, almost solid in its offensiveness

Gimmie a Fort save Jo

She feels something hard and metallic under a mass of maggoty flesh.

I'll hold it there until I get the Fort save

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 5

still awaiting the Fort save from Jo?

Male Half-elf Ranger / 6 (Falconer)

Maybe the DM could make this roll and we could go forward. Need to get the momentum rolling on this game again.

Sorry guys, yah I let this sit a bit too long. My bad, I have been real busy as of late.

DM rollings

Spoiler:
1d4 ⇒ 21d6 ⇒ 21d6 ⇒ 4

As Jo tries to grab the hard object she feels under the carrion she feels a sharp pain in her arm in two places. She whips her arm out of the large bowl and stares in shock at two large maggot-looking things burrowing into her flesh.

OK, thanks to the high save, Jo only takes 3 damage, for the moment. Gimmie an action!

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 5

San thinks quickly, trying to remember what these are.

knowledge (nature) 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (13) + 9 = 22

If he realizes what the creatures are, he yells to Ten as he draws a dagger and rushes over to cut the little buggers out of Jo's arm, "Get a healing spell ready, big guy!"

San recalls hearing about giant maggots known as rot grubs that swell in corpses. They are a severe danger when they attach to a person, they can burrow straight into someone's heart.

For the sake of Jo, I am going to assume Ten gives you an aid another +2 and gets you over the Heal check hump ...

Ten holds Jo down as San uses his dagger to slice the wriggling white worms out of her arm. Blood gushes for the wounds as Jo screams, her cries echoing off the demonic-frescoed walls. The two giant maggots plop on the floor where they whipsaw back and forth in a pool of Jo's blood. Ten grimaces and stomps them into paste with his boot.

Jo moans, her arm slicked in blood and gore

Jo's eyes show a bit too much white, but otherwise she seems OK

Actions??

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 5

San wipes off his dagger, exclaiming "Filthy things. Can you patch her up a bit, Ten? Looks like Jo could use a little more blood; after all, who's to say how much more we all might lose down here?" He'll use Ghostfetter to continue poking around the muck that Jo was looking in, and give the entire room a good once over.

Take 20 on perception = 31

Just a reminder, what exits exist in this room?

Room description:

It is a large square room. Corridors lead off of each wall. A large statue of a skeleton dancing draped in flayed human skins is rendered in red-veined white marble, now smashed to bits on the floor. Spoiler:
San isn't sure, but the faint chirps and meeps from the branching hallways seem to be getting louder ..

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 5

San pauses a second, then lifts Ghostfetter to a ready position. "Those faint chirps and sounds seem to be getting closer. I think we're gonna have some more company, folks."

Male Elf Paladin/Ranger 4/1

"We should move into one of the passages so they can only attack from two sides at best." Izkrael suggests.

Male Human Sorcerer 5

"And since they're running down those passages, we get to fight them even sooner! Why do all these ruins have to be monster infested?"

Bribes always welcome

OK folks, 3 passages you can go down, plus the one you came from. Say North, East and South. First one stated is the one you go down ..

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 5

South ...

Bribes always welcome
Sanvoros Draben wrote:
South ...

OK, south it is ..

San leads the party down the southern corridor. The meeping and chirping sounds get a little fainter, and the corridor slopes more, leading them futher into this cavernous Mictlan.

After travelling down the shaft opens to a wonderous sight. It's another chasm, but this one's roof has burst. Another bridge heads across the span, over an expanse of water. The sides of the chasm are covered in greenery, and some tree-cloaked ruins. An entire town seems to be built along the steep sides, joined by bridges, stairways and some rope bridges.

Male Half Orc - Half Human- Half Something Else (I know that is 3 halves, but he is a big chap) Cleric Level 4

Ten Foot treads on the crawling maggot creature, squashing it under his boot.

He then tends to Jo's wounds, trading in his spiritual weapon spell for a cure.

2d8 + 2 ⇒ (7, 1) + 2 = 10

He then follows the others lead down the south tunnel, limping slightly from the pain in his lower back where he slammed against the wall.

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 5

"Well, even more to explore. Do we want to head back and finish the underground complex, or check this stuff out?"

2000th post!

Male Half-elf Ranger / 6 (Falconer)

"We should probably see what else is underground, but can we take a brief rest period here"? "Whisperwing would love to stretch out and fly a bit, and to be honest it feels good to be in Jungle again". "So maybe an hour's break or so"?
