Tobais takes a quick look at whatever's on the altar as he runs past it.
Perception: 1d20+1
Upon closer examimation, the 'altar' looks to actually be the rotted remnants of two balistae, covered in pale melon-sized eggsacs. One sac ruptures as they run by, spilling palm-sized spiders out.
Dungeon Monkey |
Ten Foot loses any pretence of bravery when the egg sac burst and shrieks like a cheer leader as he barrels along the walk way after the others.
LOL, classic
The 14-foot-tall form of Ten pounds down the limestone bridge, barreling towards the others like a sheiking harbinger of doom. The rest decide to step up the pace and they enter the tunnel on the other side. Ten feels cramped in the ten-foot tall tunnel.
Sanvoros Draben |
Looking at the screaming half-orc, which is starting to become the norm, San says, "Right. Let's go back to the previous plan. Egan and I can scout a few steps ahead with our better vision, and the others follow behind. Stealth really isn't an option anymore, I think." San begins heading down the tunnel, keeping Ghostfetter lit with light as needed, and keeping his eyes open.
I'll take 10 on Perception for now. 10+10=20
Also, DM, I'm going to keep my mage armor active; just let me know when I need to scratch off another charge from my wand (each has a 1 hour duration, and I used one as we entered the ruins.
Dungeon Monkey |
San's glowing sword illuminates a tunnel much like the others they have encountered. Carven demon faces, fantastical beastshapes and skulls leer from the frescos. San's sharp hearing hears a meeping and chirping similar to the sounds they heard back in the first room with the cenote well in it. Perhaps more ghouls?
Follow the tunnel?

Ten Foot constantly swats at his clothes and checks behind them, this helmet scraping against the ceiling periodically.

Moving right along ...
The corridor keeps gently sloping, taking an occasional few steps further downwards underground. The party comes to a large square room. Corridors lead off of each wall. A large statue of a skeleton dancing draped in flayed human skins is rendered in red-veined white marble. Large garnets bracket its eyes, winking redly in the arcane light of San's sword. Below the statue is a shallow bowl heaped with bones and well-rotted offal. The stench and flies are noisome.
Actions?
Joleesa Morvais |

Uh Oh... Don't let Vilya see this Post! ;)
Joleesa steps close to the Statue, Raptorstrike in hand as she wrinkles her nose and searches around the idol for anything amiss.
Perception Check: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
mmm... Joleesa likes red gemstones if you haven't already guessed by looking at her Eye Patch. :D
Ten Foot Twin Eater |
Ten Foot looks around at the others nervously as they look over the statue wrinkling his nose at the smell. He manages a grin and nudges Vilya in the ribs gesturing at the Statues head as he mutters "shinnies,"
"I'll take statues over blood big spiders any day," he says with a shudder. "Now what pretend god is that?" he asks himself as he racks his brain.

The statue is of Xipe Totec, the necromantic head of the Xoltec pantheon and Lord of Xibalba. Worship of this foul deity is banned in Zapatec lands, as it involves skinning live sentients and dancing about in their fresh hides.

Jo steps towards the statue and the large bowl full of offal. As she does there is a small flash at her feet. There is a grinding of stone on stone as the skeletal statue turns its head towards the young Opalline woman. A harsh voice issues out:
"Come forward and give the Lord of Xibalba his due, or become it yourself!"

Joleesa stops abruptly and shakes her head. "Well that can't be good," she intones dryly.
Ten Foot Twin Eater |
How ironic that I am currently reading the old module C1: The Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan
"Xipe Totec!! bellows Ten Foot "our lord the flayed one, Red Smoking Mirror, the Night Drinker!" he pauses hoping he has got the Statues attention. "No one here shall be parting with their skin, go back to sleep old one," he takes another breath so he can continue yelling "the seasons are not yet changing, the snakes are not ready to shed, we seek only to pass by," Ten Foot touches his birth mark, "Sleep now Lord Flayed One and awake when 'tis your time!"
Not sure if it is viable, but I am hoping a channel energy might have some effect, I'll cross one off anyway. And if not you can have fun laughing at Ten's feeble attempt.

No, no it isn't." Tobias responds, visibly shaken.

Ten pulses a wave of energy towards the statue. It has an effect: It is distracted from Jo. The marble crumbles a bit, the force harmed the statue. It moves towards Ten, bellowing:
"COME TO ME AND I SHALL WEAR YOUR HIDE."
Gonna need an intiative. I'll get a map slatted out in a bit. Roll the channel energy damage Ten.

Longbow: Point blank shot (1d20+10=17)

Egan quickly loads his bow and fires an arrow at the statue as it begins to move.

I had missed it.
So:

I'll give you this battle, but after that you are unsupersized ..

does this thing count as undead, or no?
San is distracted by Ten's burst of energy and the 'statue' coming to life. "Isn't that always the case with statues in old, ancient, dungeons?"
Gritting his teeth, he tightens his grip on ghostfetter, uses a moment to activate his arcane strike feat, and takes a mighty swing at it.

Jo's sword clangs agianst the statue with little effect. Egan's arrows sail wide, exploding against the far wall. It was 1d6 fire damage for the arrows Egan Tobias sends two darting pulses of magic into the things head, causing the garnet eyes to flare. San misses, Ghostfetter glowing greenly.
Although not strictly undead, this construct is animated by necromantic energies, thus I adjucate that it will take damage as an undead.

Ten Foot watches gigantor approach and gulps, "Mmmm, maybe this was a bad idea."
He musters his courage and approaches the statue (5' step if possible, otherwise you get an AOO but I do currently have 10 foot reach as I am enlarged).
+1 Greataxe Sacred Burst [Cyndrig the Fiendhacker] : +8 1d12+7 (x3)
Sacred Burst: Acts as a Sacred weapon (when active, deals an extra 1d6 damage to undead, 2d6 to evil outsiders, and counts as good-aligned for damage reduction.), deals extra damage on a critical hit (2d10 to undead, 4d10 to evil outsiders) 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (2) + 8 = 103d6 + 8 ⇒ (6, 6, 2) + 8 = 221d6 ⇒ 2

Vilya's attack also falls short of the mark. The beast, still focuses on the gargantuan Ten, swiping him with bony claws.

so you roll high to confirm a fumble. I thought you rolled low to confirm a fumble, and high to confirm a critical

Tobias continues to bombard the statue with an array of arcane missiles.

San's grim expression actually seems grimmer once he realizes how little they have affected the statue so far. He takes another swing with Ghostfetter, hoping for the best.

Egan's arrow flies true this time, blowing a chunk of stone off the ambulatory nightmare with a loud *crack* sound. San also gets in a good shot, his blade ringing off the stone and causing a small fissure to appear in one of the skeletal statue's rib bones. Tobias' arcane bolts seem to have some good effect as well, causing the stone to blacken where they hit.
