Tales from the City of Opal

Game Master Patrick Curtin

This is my homebrew world Arcaia. This particular setting is the free city of Opal, a lush equatorial city set on the edge of an immense jungle rife with undead , ancient civilizations, and dinosaurs.

Keeping his sword out, San asks, "OK, which way, folks? My own thought was south, but that isn't based on anything other than a random choice."

Female Human Rogue/Swashbuckler 1/4

Joleesa looks around the room at the corpses. "OK those things are just undead, but what the hells was that. It seems a little more than your garden variety undead, which makes me worry there might be more down here than we at first thought."
She walks over to the "ornate" one and pokes it a few times with Raptorstrike.

The 'ornate' ghoul is a mystery. It looks as if someone had infused fiendish traits on the undead. There are even small hornlets emerging from the wispy hair on its leathery head.

A knowledge (something relevant) check might shed some light ...

I only got Knowledge (Local) or (Nature) and that thing is far from local or natural...

I believe my rubbish Knowledge Religion +4(rank) +3(class) +0(int) = +7 is required for undead. 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13

Ten Foot checks the bodies of the undead, the wounds of the others before peering down the dark hole in the centre of the room.

Finally he moves over to search the pile of detritus in the corner.

Ten:

Spoiler:
Something gnaws on the edge of his conciousness. He remembers the smell of fresh jasmine and orange blossoms on a warm day in the orphanage classroom where Sister Five Sapphire taught Xoltec History. Something about Hell ghouls ... Drat! He must have been daydreaming that day ...

Egan, Jo and San all suffered injury at the hands of the ghouls. Egan has the most wounds, but San took a deep gash when Ghostfetter was knocked from his hands.

Random DM rolls, disregard:

Spoiler:
1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 201d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 191d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 171d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 111d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 201d20 + 9 ⇒ (6) + 9 = 15

The weird ghoul is wearing an ornate gold and gem studded Xoltec pectoral piece. There is an assortment of small coins on the others (200 GP worth). In the pile of debris, there is a disjointed skeletal figure. He looks as if he came up short against the ghouls, his bones gnawed and broken. A scabbarded short sword and a moldy quiver full of arrows seem to be his only possesions left in the pile

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 5

San looks over the strange ghoul, in an attempt to figure out what exactly it is.

knowledge (religion) 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (2) + 16 = 18

Also, if everyone would like, I can keep a running loot total again ...

EDIT: This is getting ridiculous; I've rolled nothing but 1s and 2s for the last couple of days.

EDIT 2: and cast detect magic over everything

Oops! Sorry on the lag, I thought I answered this one!

San:

Spoiler:
San remembers something about the ancient Xoltecs being able to infuse undead with demonic traits. Their fould god Xipe Totec was also considered a demon lord in some circles. Maybe this was something like that?

"Well, at least some of this stuff might be valuable." Tobias casts a spell and looks over the goods along with San.

So, see if this stuff is magic, then move on to another room?

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 5

"Yeah. I still say we head that way," San says as he points to the south passageway.

anything radiate magic, DM?

Oh snap I am really off my game guys, mea culpa.

San:

Spoiler:
San's arcane vision notes that the sword and the arrows are magical. There is also something magical in the pile winking.

Male Elf Paladin/Ranger 4/1

Izkrael will peer down the shaft as the others investigate the remains of their foes and the detritus in the corner.

Perception 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13

Since it is dark, and he probably can't see to far down the shaft even with low-light vision, he will ask if one of the casters can spare a spell to illuminate the depths of the shaft.

"I would like to try and learn where this might lead, and whether or not anymore might be coming up to attack us from this route."

Male Human Sorcerer 5

"Alright." Tobias fires his Lighted bolt down the shaft before loading and casting light on another bolt. He then examines the golden pectoral piece with an experienced eye.

An eye experienced at looking at pectoral pieces... ;)

Joleesa walks over to see what has Sanvoros interested in the pile, Raptorstrike at the ready in case something nasty were to happen.

She's not interested in the Short Sword or the Arrows. I'm assuming Egan will wnat the Arrows? As for the Sword... does everyone have a magical weapon now?

the bolt flies down the southern shaft, illuminating more cobwebs and carvings. No undead reveal themselves.

Tobias:

Spoiler:
The pectoral is a splendid piece. Easily worth 7,500 gold to the right buyer.

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 5

San removes the ring from the bony finger, and examines it and the sword and arrows. Spellcraft w/ detect magic to identify.

San:

** spoiler omitted **

San looks at the party. The short sword is a fine blade, and exceptionally sharp (keen +2), the ring provides protection (protection +2). However, I can't figure out the arrows right now. Anyone mind if I hang onto the ring for now? Would augment my mage armor in our scrapes."

Female Human Rogue/Swashbuckler 1/4

Jo looks down at the plain band on her finger and smiles back at Sanvoros. "The ring's all yours, I'd recommend removing it from it's current user though if you want any kind of benefit from it. I have no use for the sword, but I'm sure Egan can always find a use for the arrows."

Male Half-elf Ranger / 6 (Falconer)

Egan smiles at the group. "Yes after that last scrap I'm reminded once again how much I prefer using arrows over face to face confrontation". "I will make good use of these arrows in defending us".

Egan then invokes his healing belt to close his injuries.
2d8 ⇒ (1, 4) = 5

He then moves towards the new tunnel, waiting and giving Vilya the chance to lead. If she doesn't do so in a couple of rounds, he begins to head down the corridor.

Egan:

Spoiler:
After catching his breath from the fight and closing his wounds with his magical belt, Egan lopes down the south corridor warily.

The stench of the ghouls lingers. There are dried bloodstains everywhere, attesting to decades of foul feasting. The corridor heads straight south for about 200 feet, before starting to slope at a steep angle and ending in a pyramidal-shaped room 50 feet later. Three other corridors branch off at the other side of the room. A massive carven pillar can be seen from the hallway he is walking down, in the middle of the odd-shaped chamber. I'll get a map ready soonish.

"Oooh, shiny... Mine."

Vilya glances around furtively, then quickly snatches up the pectoral.

Glancing around once more, she takes the lead.

New Map

I placed you in a basic configuration. Call out with a coordinate.

Since everyone can see the room

The sloping hallway ends at an odd triangular room. This pyramidal room is cobwebby and dusty, and small piles of debris clutter the corners. A large pillar carven with various Xoltec glyphs sits in the center of the room. Three entrances sit in shadowed darkness beyond the carven pillar at the end of the pyramidal room.

Male Elf Paladin/Ranger 4/1

Izkrael will move foward to F17, and sweep the room for evil auras.

Izkrael wrote:

The room seems free of evil auras

Actually there is no one visible to 'read'.

Rulez:

Spoiler:
Detect Evil (Sp): At will, a paladin can use detect evil, as the spell. A paladin can, as a move action, concentrate on a single item or individual within 60 feet and determine if it is evil, learning the strength of its aura as if having studied it for 3 rounds. While focusing on one individual or object, the paladin does not detect evil in any other object or individual within range.

I just noticed Pat, that when you black out around what we can see, you can still make out the map underneath... just FYI

Joleesa moves into the room warily, Raptorstrike at the ready and hugging the wall.
ending her move in H16
Perception Check: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 5

San scans the area for anything that might stand out, and uses detect magic liberally.

Perception 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (16) + 10 = 26 not that it matters with Jo's roll ...

San and Jo:

Spoiler:
Looking about, the room seems to be dominated by the large carven pillar. There is a different-colored flagstone path leading from the hallway to the pillar. The path is about 3' wide, and black where the rest of the floor is a dirty grey limestone color. The pillar itself has several odd grooves in its structure, almost a corkscrew around the base.

Yeah I actually used the wrong grid to draw this map, and I had to kludge on a dark layer, and somehow it isn't opaque. Next map will be better ...

You can read the Jo and San spoiler (as can anyone getting a 20+ in Perception).

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 5

"I don't like the looks of that pillar, and the pathway. Looks like it may be a descending ceiling, or something, the way it's got those screw marks on it. Can our resident trapfinder take a look?" San turns questioningly to Vilya ...

Paging Vilya. Please pick up the metagame phone at the demon face to your right. Paging Vilya ....

Shiny might be bizzy, I'll DMPC if I have to later today ..

Perception and Disable Device

1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 101d20 + 12 ⇒ (7) + 12 = 19

Vilya approaches the pillar, walking the thin black line to the carven surface. She pokes about with a set of tools, but initially seems unable to find out where the trap is, if there is in fact one.

Try Mark II 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (16) + 12 = 28

After a few minutes of fiddling, Vilya tugs at a stone face's tongue and the leering face retracts the tongue and shuts. Vilya stands back and smirks.

"Typical blade trap. We can push the gargoyle's nose and it will reset. I imagine blades shoot from these grooves."

Just as she finishes her investigations there is the clack of bone hitting bone from farther in the complex.

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 5

"Well, I don't suppose someone's tidying up back there. Looks like we need to be ready for some more guests."

San tries to pinpoint exactly where the sound is coming from and how far away it is.

The sounds seem to be coming from the three dark corridor entrances, and the sounds are getting louder.

Male Half-elf Ranger / 6 (Falconer)

Egan draws his bow, and loads one of the exploding arrows to fire at the first group to appear.

Female Human Rogue/Swashbuckler 1/4

Joleesa thinks for a moment before drawing her Mace and readying it in her left hand. She wasn't about to do a Vilya and fight with both weapons, but sh'd be daned if she was going to face bones without something to pulverise them with. "Always be prepared," she whispers to herself.

Sorry for the absence, real life invaded my cosy fantasy world.

Ten Foot finds himself bringing up the rear, his warm cloaking from the remove fear spell fades and he suddenly feels a little big more vulnerable.

To counter act this he calls on the god of adventure to grant him strength to face the oncoming foe. Cast Bulls Strength.

Male Elf Paladin/Ranger 4/1

Izkrael steps to the front of the group and readies himself, curveblade held in both hands before him, his narrowed eyes flicking from one darkened pathway to the next.
