Tales from the City of Opal

Game Master Patrick Curtin

This is my homebrew world Arcaia. This particular setting is the free city of Opal, a lush equatorial city set on the edge of an immense jungle rife with undead , ancient civilizations, and dinosaurs.

Group initiative, if I am going to die I am going to roll for my own doom! (1d20=14)

Bribes always welcome

Please ..you guys have been eating my challenges like candy. I'll update later. Right now I have to go lie down for a bit :(

Bribes always welcome

Joleesa: 22
Izkrael: 18
Egan: 17
Vilya: 17
Sanvoros: 16
Seven Eagle: 16
Crocodilly: 16
Ten:15
Tobias: 15

A large retilian snout emerges, snapping towards Ten

Ten is the only one in the water so far yes?

I'll let you post up any actions, remember that everyone besides Ten (and San) are in a small cramped tunnel ATM)

>>NEW MAP<<

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 5

San spends a swift action to activate his Arcane Strike, and then attacks the beast with a decent blow ...

greatsword (1d20+6=23, 2d6+5=9)

If I can take a 5' step forward and keep my head out of water, I'll do it. Otherwise, everyone's gonna have to squeeze around me. San's just not a NBA all-star like the rest of the group ...

Male Elf Paladin/Ranger 4/1

Izkrael will make his way out of the tunnel, and step to San's left (into square K4). He will then take a swing on the alligator with his long sword if able to.

Swim check1d20+6=19 (if needed)

Attack 1d20+6=25, Damage 1d8+3=10

Critical Confirmation 1d20+6=14, Damage 1d8+3=8

I did not apply any penalties for the water, and I suppose it gets an attack of opportunity on me.

Male Half Orc - Half Human- Half Something Else (I know that is 3 halves, but he is a big chap) Cleric Level 4

"My he's a biggun!" Ten Foot yells, unable to act until the Croc has it's wicked way.

Hopefully it won't end like this!

Current Statistics:
AC: 14, Touch: 9, FF, 14
(Chainmail +5, Dexterity +0, Size -1)
Base Attack: +2
CMB: +9
Initiative: 0
Greataxe: +9 3d6+10 (x3)
Str: 23 +6
Dex: 10 +0

The reduced Dexterity changes my initiative down to 14 as it was in effect before the roll.

Female Human Rogue/Swashbuckler 1/4

Joleesa is still trying to coax "Wheezy" down the tunnel when she hears fighting coming from up ahead. Cursing, she drops the reigns and tries to move down the tunnel towards the battle.

Move as far down the tunnel as she can and move into the room. She'll avoid the water for the moment, trying to get at the Crocodile from a dry position.

"Hope it doesn't come to that."

Vilya creeps off to the right, partially submurging herself in order to better sneak up on the huge predator.

Stealth: 16 + 9 = 25

Bribes always welcome

Sorry for the delay folks, been hit with a monster bug

Sanvoros hits the monster reptile, gashing its leathery hide. Iz's strike also draws blood, clouding the green water with ribbons of red. Vilya drops into the fetid water and swims up to the beast. The croc chomps down on the enlarged Ten.

ATK: 1d20+11=16, DAM: 2d8+12=26

The massive jaws grab one of Ten's legs in a crushing bite

YOWTCH!

Batter up!

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 5

San finds himself off-balance as he takes his next swing in the cramped, flooded confines ...

hack 'n slash ... (1d20+6=7, 2d6+5=16) Uggh ... natural 1 ...

Male Human Sorcerer 5

With a mumbled phrase, Tobias sends two bolts of force at the crocodile.

Magic Missle: 1d4+1=3, 1d4+1=2

Male Half Orc - Half Human- Half Something Else (I know that is 3 halves, but he is a big chap) Cleric Level 4

Ten is fighting for his life 3HPs left! and flails his axe down at the beast while roaring in pain.

Doesn't the croc have improved grab if you want to take advantage of it?

Wild attack at croc! (1d20+9=19, 3d6+10=19)

Ten Foot looks wide eyed and panicked!

Male Half-elf Ranger / 6 (Falconer)

"Whats happening"? Egan cries from the back of the group. "Is that the bellow of a crocodile I hear"? "Don't hurt it, its probably just protecting its next".

Attack: 5 + 2 = 7

Attack: 2 + 2 = 5

At the very moment of Vilya's strike, she is distracted by Egan's yell, throwing off her aim. She whirls on him (foolishly turning her back on the massive reptile), her face a mask of anger.

"WHAT THE HELL IS YOUR PROBLEM!?"

Male Elf Paladin/Ranger 4/1

Izkrael will swing at the crocodile again, trying to dispatch it before it kills anyone.

Attack 1d20+6=18
Damage 1d8+3=7

You guys are some death dealers! LOL

The might of the party goes full bore on the crocodile. Before it has a chance to capitalize on its grasp of Ten's leg, the combined might of arcane magic and naked steel send it to its death. Ten feels the jaws spasm and release. The giant carcass rolls over and drifts in the bloody water.

Congrats folks!

The water looks like it holds no other challenges for our heroes.

UGH. Still hallucinatorily sick, but you guys sewed this encounter up well. Post actions, and hopefully I will feel better tomorrow ... :(

Female Human Rogue/Swashbuckler 1/4

Joleesa rushes over to where Ten is standing blleding into the water.
"Are you alright? For Gods sake heal your self before you bleed to death!"
She gives him a grin. "Come to think of it, in your enlarged state if you did die we could use you as a bridge, so we wouldn't have to get ourselves wet crossing this room."
She trudges back up the corridor to Egan and "Wheezy" to tell him what happened and continue to coax "Wheezy" down the tunnel.

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 5

San gives Ten a little elbow. "Yeah, the blood's staining my shirt. Stitch up those wounds, will you?"

He gives Iz a wink. "Nice finishing move, as always, my friend. Just like our last swamp trek, eh?"

Male Elf Paladin/Ranger 4/1

Izkrael cracks a faint smile, and moves toward the other doorway, looking up the stairs. Standing at the base of them, he switches back to his curveblade.

Perception (Sight-based) 1d20+7=9

After he checks the stairs, and doen't notice anything, he will move back over to Ten-Foot, and use Lay-on-Hands on him.

Lay on Hands 1d6=5

Izkrael:

Spoiler:
Izkrael sees a ceramic squat jug sitting on the stairway of the far hall. Even from a few feet away there is a strong smell of rotted fish

Male Half Orc - Half Human- Half Something Else (I know that is 3 halves, but he is a big chap) Cleric Level 4

Ten Foot limps out of the water to sit in the stairs that we entered from, his huge bulk blocking the way down. He inspects his wound before downing a strong drink to block the pain and casting a few spells.

Casting cure light wounds up to 3 times as required. (1d8+3=11, 1d8+3=10, 1d8+3=9)

Hows that! Only needed 2 cure light wounds to get me 21HP back.

Ten Foot uses the power of his god to stitch his wounds up, leaving only a faint wound.

In game terms I will spontaneously cast Bless as cure light wounds, recall it with my first pearl, cast it again and then recall it again. So both pearls used for today.

"Thank you guys, that was close." he staggers to his feet and offers to ferry the others across the water.

"Can I lead?" he asks, indicating his huge bulk.

Shall I assume one minute of the 3 minutes gone after we all cross the water and head into the far corridor, where Ten is suffering from the "Squeezing" rule.

Sounds good

Everyone trudges/swims through the fetid pool, the distant booming of thunder dully echoing down through the entry corridor. At the far stairs, everyone sees a cheap clay amphorae sitting on the steps, close to the water. The smell of rotting fish comes strongly from its direction. The stairs travel upwards, ending in a door about 40 feet farther in.

Female Human Rogue/Swashbuckler 1/4

Finally getting "Wheezy" into the room, this time it is she who balks at swimming through the fetid water. Even after all of her Jungle experience she still hates the thought of swimming through the likes of this. "Oh well", she thinks to herself. "I'm already halfway there from the swamp outside".
Plunginf into the water with "Wheezy" in tow, he seems to enjoy the water, splashing water up playfukky and trying to hit Lumien who is flying overhead. Lumien gives a screech as some of the murky spray hits him and puts on a burst of speed, nestling onto a ledge above where the Clay Jar sits.
Climbing out the other side, she wrinkles her nose at the stench coming from the jug. "Seems like snapper over there prefers adventurers to fish. This smells like it's been here for a while."
She gingerly approaches the jug, breathing through her mouth as much as she can and examining the area closely.
Perception Check. (1d20+5=13)

Bribes always welcome

The large clay jar seems to be filled with a very fragrant fish chum mixture. There is a cap on the top, but the smell (and some drips of the offal) comes through it.

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 5

San examins the area well, even listening at the door that seems to lead deeper into this complex.

sight and sound Perception (1d20+9=11)

Unfortunately, the horrendous smell from the pot, plus the previous fight and deep water, leave him distracted.

"I suppose it goes without saying we should leave that clay pot alone?"

Male Human Sorcerer 5

Tobias wades across the pool. Upon reaching the other side, he snaps his fingers, and he begins to mystically dry off.
Prestidigitation

"Oh, definitely. They probably just kept it around to feed that *Points at gator's corpse* when enough adventurers didn't stumble down here. Besides, I've already smelled too many dead fish in my life. Let's keep going."

Perception: 1d20+1=6

Male Half-elf Ranger / 6 (Falconer)

Egan finally makes his way into the room, and looks upon the corpse of natures warrior with slight sadness. Still, human life was more important than nature, and from the looks of things this beast was placed hear by someone as a guard.

Egan will use Knowledge Nature to try and determine if the jar of chum might have a purpose beyond attracting the croc. It seems a bit small to sate such a large beast.

Knowledge Nature (1d20+ 8=20) I didn't include the +2 bonus, because this is really swamp, not Jungle

He will then cast his eyes about the chamber looking for any clues to the occupants past or present.

Perception (1d20+17=20) +2 for sight or sound based.

After that he will investigate the area around the container to determine if there are any recent tracks or other signs.

Perception (1d20+17=25) Again +2 if sight or sound based.

"Disgusting..."

Bribes always welcome

The jug contains maybe 10 gallons of fish chum.

Egan:

Spoiler:
Egan knows that fragrant rottted fish can be used to distract reptiles. More than likely whoever raised the gator used the fish to keep it busy as they left the complex.

Egan can see many carvings on the walls. They look to be non-human in nature. Do you have any K(History) or similar?

There is a door at the top of the stairs, closed. The stairway has faded time-worn carvings along it

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 5

Coming up to the door at the top of the stairs, San gives it a quick once over.

"Anyone here have any experience with checking these sorts of things for traps and stuff?" he says, looking directly at Vilya.

Vilya smiles, extending a long, jet-black tongue.

"Let's see what we can do, shall we?"

Vilya inspects the door, but sees no obvious traps. It is locked though

"Hurm..."

Vilya's triple-jointed fingers almost blur as she works a tiny piece of bone into the lock. After a moment, she steps back, giggling like a schoolgirl.

Open Lock: 14 + 10 = 24

Vilya dexterously tumbles the lock, unlocking it easily

Opening??

Male Half Orc - Half Human- Half Something Else (I know that is 3 halves, but he is a big chap) Cleric Level 4

"Allow me," Ten Foots voice booms out, deeper and louder than normal thanks to his enlarged size.

Grasping the handle he forces the door open and heads through, battle axe gripped in his off hand.

Bribes always welcome

Ten opens the door, and an interesting room is revealed. Faded time-worn carvings cover the walls. There is a raised walkway five feet across leading to the opposite side, where another door sits. To the side of the walkway, there are six pedestals, each with a small gold statue upon them. The statues are busts of reptilian folk, Sliss'Pok in looks, but with a more evil cast to their faces. There are three statues on each side of the walkway

Female Human Rogue/Swashbuckler 1/4

Joleesa follows the others into the room and stands next to the door, off to the left with "Wheezy". She takes a look around the room and her eyes alight first on the carvings and then on the statues.
"Those statues are just asking to be trapped," she says to the rest of the party.
"Vilya, do you want to do the honours or should I?"

Female Human
Joleesa Morvais wrote:

Vilya seems to be more than a bit distracted by the shiny, and appears rushed as she searches the pedestals for traps.

"Mine."

VILYA:

Spoiler:
Vilya inspects the Sslis'pok busts. They're gold, all right, they are on long (4' tall) round 12" diameter pedestals. Vilya can't see any traps or plates or seams that would indicate problems. Nothing but shiny shiny gold ....

Bribes always welcome

Just in case, Knowledge: Arcana 1d20+7=15

Tobias:

Spoiler:
He has seen statues like this before in private collections. They date back millenia to the original Sslis'pok Empire. They could be worth much more as historical artifacts than their gold alone. Not much has survived from that era. He has never heard of them having any magical properties though .. Sslis'pok magic was very alchemical in nature, with a strong thread of bioarcana thrown in.

Male Human Sorcerer 5

A smile comes over Tobias's face. "Hey, I just realized I've seen this sort of statue before. If we could get them back to Opal and find the right buyer, we could sell these things for more than their weight in gold."

Male Half-Elf Ranger 1 / Wizard (transmuter) 5

"Really?" San steps over and casts detect magic on all of them, and scanning the entire room as well. He also tries to see if he recognizes anything about the statues.

Knowledge (arcana), knowledge (religion), and Perception (1d20+9=13, 1d20+10=19, 1d20+9=13)

yet another series of craptastic IC rolls...

Male Elf Paladin/Ranger 4/1

Izkrael stands at the doorway, directing his gaze about the room, scanning it for foul prescences.

Male Half Orc - Half Human- Half Something Else (I know that is 3 halves, but he is a big chap) Cleric Level 4

"I hear looting these old tombs are sometimes bad juju!" Ten Foot exclaims, a wry smile on his face. "Is it safe to head across the room to the other door?" he asks before starting across the walk way.

Female Human Rogue/Swashbuckler 1/4

Joleesa casts a critical eye at Vilya, seeing as her eyes are wide and she seems to be staring more at the gold statues than at the area around them.
Leaving "Wheezy" and telling him to stay in Greenspeak, she quietly moves up to Vilya and gives the area a scan.
"Can never be too careful," she quips to Vilya.
