There aren't any large gusts of wind, but it isn't a perfect steady breeze. More like a strong draft that fluctuates slightly. Interestingly, you notice some humidity along\g the breeze.

Niyut was exploring further?

GM Screen:

NiyutPerception: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (4) + 18 = 22

Niyut moves further down the northwestern passage to discover a massive cavern. The moisture in this fifty foot vaulted area is undeniable. A freezing, icy mist rises up from a sinkhole in the far northwest of the cavern. The ceiling high above is coated in a bluish ice as is majority of the cavern floor near the sinkhole. Niyut notices that the ice on the ground is moving ever so slightly.

Knowledge(Planes) DC14:
Closer study of the bluish ice reveals a Freezing Flow. It's believed that these strange frozen oozes are created when a particularly cold arctic area has prolonged exposure to ice from the Elemental Planes. Rising seemingly spontaneously from such a supernatural deep freeze, freezing flows shamble forth in search of prey, hungry for the life energy of warm-blooded creatures, which they somehow metabolize.

It's some kind of ooze, I'll go warn the others.

Niyut goes back to warn the rest of the party (all the party) and to see if they think we should kill it so that we can explore further.

Was there anything in the north eastern passage?

Exploring the northeastern cave, Niyut finds nothing of interest.

While Niyut and Gruskorb cautiously make their way through the northern branch, Garidan is carefully venturing into the chamber before him, rapier in hand and breathing shallowly through his mouth to manage the rank odor filling it. He peers about with his altered vision, attempting to discern both possible threats and the source of that smell.

Perception Check: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (18) + 11 = 29

Unless Garidan sees a reason not to do so, he's moving two squares diagonally down-right and one square down.

Bright Tower Maps | Last Haven Table #1 Maps | Last Haven Table #2 Maps

Garidan slowly moves into the southern cavern, covering his mouth and nose. A fine dust stirs as he enters this barren and dry cave. As the stench begins to overwhelm him, he notices a rough, blackened mound along the northern edge where the cavern wall slopes inward sharply creating a small overhang. The mound has a shallow sheen to it and is clearly the source of the odoriferous emanations.

With a closer inspection, the mound was once some sort of deposit upon the cavern floor that has now hardened, almost petrified. Garidan reaches out and is able to break off a small chunk before gaging violently and stumbling out of the cavern.

Knowlege(Arcana) DC23:
The small nugget retrieved by Garidan is a chunk of petrified bat guano. The guano is an ancient spell component for Fireball that is consumed upon use. It will grant the Sickened Spell metamagic feat upon a single casting of Fireball. Any creature who fails their save by more than 10 will receive the nauseated condition while in the spells original blast radius. If they leave the blast radius, the condition becomes sickened for the duration.

When he unexpectedly hears the wizard speak up--having not been aware of his presence--the swashbuckler jumps and makes a strangled noise that most assuredly was not a scream. After he gets his heartbeat under control, he stares briefly at the noxious substance in his hand before tossing it to Malthazir. "Considering what it smells like now, I've no doubt at all that actually burning it would produce an even more fearsome stink with it. All yours then, I suppose," Garidan says as he scrubs his reeking hand against the nearby rocks in an effort to get the stink off. Once done with that, he quickly makes his way north, only to meet Niyut bearing warning of the strange ooze in the chamber ahead. "Hmm, then that probably explains that poor soul's end," he says with a nod toward the frozen body off to the side. "Do we want chance engaging it? Malthazir's fiery summons seem like a natural counter to a creature of that sort, so we have a chance at least."

Everyone gathers at the cave entrance to discuss the next steps in their journey. With Truk’tosh standing on the ledge below alongside Tacal, Niyut explains the location of the sinkhole and the ooze. Before long, everyone looks at Garidan as the stench from his hand has become noticeable. Maybe rubbing it with charcoal will help. I remember seeing mother do it whenever she was throwing potions.

What is the plan from here?

Following Truk'tosh's lead, the swashbuckler engages the flowing pool of liquid ice from a distance, though still quite a bit closer than the half-orc struck from. @Niyut - You beat the DC by more than 5 for your knowledge check. You can ask another question. You do note that the Freezing Flow is much larger than the stories you have heard of them from your grandmother.

Niyut casts a couple of spells upon herself and her brother as she prepares for battle with the frozen creature. While Malthazir begins to cast a summoning spell, Truk'tosh unleashes Morgrym's Axe at the creature. The first blow glances harmless off the creatures frozen exterior, but the second blow shatters a small chunk of ice from the flow. It riles up, extending fifteen feet into the air before coming back down. The third attack by the half-orc sails past the creature without effect. The axe spins through the air and returns to Truk'tosh's firm grip.

Witnessing the attack, Garidan steps forward and flings bone shards at the creature. Unable to react quick enough, the shards lacerate the freezing flow. Gruskorb commands his bear trap to lay it wait for the creature.

@Gruskorb - I've put the trap on the map. Please feel free to place it appropriately if you prefer a different spot.

@Truk'tosh - What is your current AC with Niyut's buff?

The freezing flow arcs up into the air and glides forward towards the swashbuckler. It's body lashes out at Garidan slamming into his breastplate. The sound of the icy flesh grinding against the mithril echoes throughout the cavern, but Garidan is unhurt.

AH! Now I remember why I didn't post the update... I was looking up ooze traits to confirm they can't be crit'ed! Thx Garidan. So, the 30 extra damage on the critical is removed.

And I missed the AoE from the pseudo dragon... sorry.

Two of Garidan's flurry of bone shard attacks slice through the icy exterior of the freezing flow. The creature's form begins to slip away before recovering and preparing to strike once again. Malthazir's dragon companion flies above the freezing flow breathing upon it. However, the creature twists to avoid being hit.

I'll DMPC Truk and Gruskorb tonight if they haven't posted.

Sorry about the absence. I was bedridden for a few days with illness but I'm back on my feet now.

Truk'tosh's AC is 28 with shield of faith and bodyguard. It's 25 after the first 3 attacks per round.

Truk'tosh advances a step and resumes his ranged assault on the freezing flow.

Truk'tosh hurls his axe at the icy creature three times in rapid succession. The second attack shatters much of the frozen flesh from its form. The swirling flow of water within the creature falls silent. A familiar shimmering of watery essence coalesces above the creature.

A fine mist rises up from the sinkhole just to the northwest of the huge freezing flow. Looking down through the sinkhole, you can see a massive cavern extending far below. The bottom is beyond even Niyut's sight. A waterfall coming out of a opening in the cavern wall is 30' feet below where you now stand. The crash of the waterfall in the darkness below echoes through the chamber.

So... you can peer into a very large cavern through the hole in your cavern's floor. Below you, you can see the water fall coming out of a tunnel in the cavern wall just below you. The waterfall disappears into the darkness, but you can hear it hitting the floor below in the darkness. A cold, misty flow of air is coming up through the sinkhole.

Giving Truk'tosh a wordless look for a moment, Gruskorb slowly panned his attention to the trap at hand. You'll have to compete with that beast if you want a bite. Looks like you've got your work cut out for you!

However, whether the foes here knew it or not, the sinkhole below was the most devious trap of them all. The rogue simply couldn't bring himself to resist thinking about what might be down there. How many others stumbled into these parts unknown? If nothing else, there's water.

"Sounds like there's a bottom by the water." He kept silence one again to make his point by the white noise beneath them. "Long way though. One of you spell-users got any way you can think of? If not, I've got some rope." Truth be told, Gruskorb did categorically fit in with the group he named, though his ability was so meager in comparison, he felt it a misnomer.

"If you tie the rope around my waist, I could glide down to check it out and then you and my brother can pull me up," Niyut offers.

Upon the fight's conclusion, Garidan cautiously nears the hole in the ground, peering curiously over the edge into the depths to the limit of his vision. "I've got a coil of rope in my pack as well," the swashbuckler remarks after thinking over Gruskorb's suggestion. "There's another coil, that contracting rope, in our supplies. And we've got two good lengths of chain besides." As he speaks, Garidan is already drawing the aforementioned rope from his half-slung pack, and he also retrieves the flickering magic torch from its interior upon further consideration. With the chamber now lit by the magic light, he nods at the object. "Of course, we could try to lower that instead of risking Niyut's safety if there's a threat lurking down there."

Knowing his summons are soon to be returned to the void, Malz points at the hole and utters a single crackling word, ushering them down.

Fire elementals go down to scout.

Fire elementals can't fly iirc. How are you supposing they report back to you?

How kind of you!

"I don't know how much a bit of light it going to show us from this far up." The rogue turned to Niyut. "Have at it." He'd made his peace with not going immediately. Less dangerous this way, anyhow.

The fire elementals look skeptical at Malthazir then plunge through the sink hole. They drop past the waterfall, dimming slightly from the mist that subdues their brilliant flames. Their radiance shows a large tunnel from which the flow of water emerges. The edges of the tunnel are marked with stone blocks obviously made by mortal hands. The tunnel is not a natural formation, and the exposed portion of it has tumbled into the cavern below.

At last, the elementals light shows a lake of water surrounded by scores of Ice Giants far below you. Quickly, you note that some of the giants are crawling from the frigid lake. As they become alerted to the elementals, the Ice Giants begin to mobilize. After a brief struggle, the light shed by the fire elementals is extinguished.

You would estimate that the lake is over 300 feet below the sinkhole.

Chuckling nervously as he backs away from the hole while repacking the rope and torch, Garidan is quick to voice his agreement with Niyut's idea, and even expand upon it somewhat. "Indeed, indeed. And maybe be just a bit swift about leaving the vicinity of the tower as well, in case someone decides to look for a source to that unexpected rain of elementals." Pausing as a thought occurs to him, he looks at Malthazir and asks curiously. "Uh, is that going to cause you any problems the next you summon those," he queries while pointing toward the hole that the elementals had just been sent down.

Malz sneers and barks at the elementals. "Sshai irrh khansstrraktss, fignnentss frrhann tshh vhait! sshai exisst shanlash thi sserrvh nnash vill, khannd!" Whatever he said was clearly effective as the elementals plunge to their doom.

Wow.
They are literally figments of magic, tools. And they have an expiration date.

Malz nods to Niyut. "Indeed, I think that may be above our pay grade."

At the third time he is questioned about the suicidal use of his summons he internally flares, but calms himself down. "Garidan I understand your concern. But those are not real creatures. I am not calling actual beings to fight, I am constructing magic into figments of beings that exist. They are sculpted after real creatures, but they are not real themselves. Tools, nothing more."

Niyut "bravely" leads the party back the way they came and down into the fallen shrine.

Bright Tower Maps | Last Haven Table #1 Maps | Last Haven Table #2 Maps

The party returns to the tower and gathers up Tacal, who stood shivering on the frozen pathway outside the ursikka's cave. Heading down the staircase, the rough hewn stone steps have taken heavy damage from the upheaval of the world. At several points you are forced to climb down sections of steep slopes of broken rock and loose debris. Tacal is reluctant but with the reassurance from Truk'tosh, the beast complies.

Passing several exits, that end quickly in collapsed tunnels, you descend many levels into the mountains. Finally coming upon a large landing, a ten-foot wide archway leads out of the winding stairwell. Additionally, the stairwell continues downward leading further into the mountain. The stairs on this level and below have a slight coating of snow and ice. While not slippery, it is clear that the elements have made it here. You feel the chill of a breeze coming through the archway. A short tunnel beyond the archway leads to a large set of double doors which hang precariously on their broken hinges as though recently destroyed.

Perception DC20:
You hear the low grumbling of guttural voices from beyond the doors.

Garidan slips quietly up to the door and peers through the cracks between the door and the framework. A large audience chamber lies past the doors. The voices are beyond his darkvision, but he hears another voice, although this one is female, that says a few exaggerated words. A blue, watery light illuminates the far side of the room. A female ice giant in flowing, translucent robes is casting magic upon a wounded ice giant. With the brief moments that your vision is able to see the scene play out, you see ice rebuild upon his body, and he begins to rise to his full height as though he prepares to reenter a fight.

Just as stealthily--he hopes--Garidan creeps back and relays what he's seen, and his guess that there's something going on further back beyond his vision's reach. Turning to Niyut, he asks in a low voice. "Do you think your sneaking and magic would be up to traversing that room and find out more information?"

"Of course." Niyut says almost primly. She has never lacked for confidence in her abilities. She beseeches her grandmother to give her the gift of giant's speech and then slips from easy view.

Niyut cloaks herself in a glamour and moves forwards into the room. She does not rely on her invisibility alone. She clings to the shadows and the shadows cling to her.

With Niyut sneaking into the larger room for her investigating, Garidan decides to probe cautiously further down the stairs. Unfortunately, while the stairs as a whole are passable in spite of the ice and snow, the swashbuckler finds a few slick patches that result in his banging noisily against the wall while attempting to keep his footing.

Niyut crosses the audience chamber out of sight from the two ice giants. Slipping between the shadows of the decaying structure, the oracle sees that many repairs have been made to the room. Smooth blocks of ice have been set into the walls to reinforce them and to fix the damage caused by a great earthquake. Small hallways on either side of the room lead to anti-chambers. She tries to investigate but decides better of it as the rooms are partially collapsed and in need of severe repairs.

As she approaches the archway on the far side of the audience chamber, she hears the thunderous footfalls of more ice giants. Hiding in the shadows, she watches as three hulking giants enter the chamber and move to a far corner, still under repair. The trio raise their arms and begin to release their icy flesh into the stonework, reinforcing the structural integrity of the chamber. Soon their bodies begin to atrophy and they methodically plod back towards the archway.

Niyut quickly slips though ahead of the ice giants to find a wide hall and an open pair of iron doors. Clearly, this was once the entrance to this structure. Peaking out the doors, she sees a vast cavern with a crystal blue pool of rippling water dominating the area. The sound of crashing water echoes throughout. Keeping to the darkness places available to her, Niyut enters the cavern and sees a glorious waterfall falling from the darkness above. Many ice giants move about the cavern while others are gathered in silent counsel.

As she turns tot return to the group, she hears the steady marching of the three ice giants. They exit the shrine and approach the lake. Kneeling before it, they drink their fill and regain their girth. Wasting no more time, Niyut quickly returns to the party.

@Niyut - please give me another stealth check for your return.

With Garidan...

Cautiously descending the stairs, Garidan sees that the steps are becoming increasingly coated with ice, yet their form is changed. The ice has formed thicker over every other step making each tread deeper and higher than the next. After several turns around the underground tower, the stairs end. You feel as though you've descended another 30-40 feet. The stairs end in a narrow hallway coated with a thin sheet of ice. A soft hum and glow can be seen down the hall. Forty feet down the hallway, an archway marks the entrance to a room. The bluish tinted glow comes from within. Garidan hears the guttural sound of giant voices.

The voice stop abruptly, and the swashbuckler hears the footsteps of an ice giant approaching the hallway.
