Here's a question about the game. Should we be picking a faction? That would give us the motivation to get North (or wherever). Just itching to actually get posting.

The Exchange

Hi Gentlemen (and any ladies)

Zennor will take time (just like getting a PHB to an island in the English Channel).

But I'm looking forward to this alot. Got a good feeling about this edition.

Cheers

Hi all.

I'm hopeful that we'll get some hands-on experience with the five factions before we have to choose one or the other.

Particularly as I'm not entirely clear on who they are. Yet. I'm currently taking a self-taught crash course on the Forgotten Realms.

HP 24/24 INIT: +3 / AC: 14/16(shield) / PassPerc:14 / STR:+5, CON +5

Factions are for D&D Adventures League but I wasn't aware that this was necessarily an adventure league game being run. Also you can join a faction at any time... I'm not even certain my character would know about factions until he reached a larger portion of society and became noticed. Also I would hate to have to reroll my ability scores if they don't fall under the guidelines of the AL.

God Infinity........

Good to see everyone. :-)

I'll answer questions over tonight and tomorrow, but wanted to welcome everyone to the game, and state how we're going to proceed.

The rest of this week and next week, we'll adventure around the city, and try out some components of the system, as well as develop our characters a bit. This will have no effect on the game, and we'll reset to the campaign beginning on Monday Aug. 25th. Many will have their books by then, and I will have read and re-read the adventure.

In the meantime, the adventure has some tie-in backgrounds for the campaign that can be assigned in addition to the ones you have for your character.

I'd like everyone to roll 2d10 and I'll let you choose which of the backgrounds you can work your character into best. Not a lot of mechanical benefit, but good for the story, and why you're here. (And getting inspiration points).

As Bor mentioned this is not an Adventurers League game, so while factions might come into play, they're not immediately important.

Bor> please choose one of the following options, and work it into your backstory. When the official adventure begins (8/25?) this will be your motivation to involve yourself in the events.

Spoiler:

1. Leosin Erlanthar, a wandering monk, once saved your life. He’s sent urgent word for you to meet him in a small town called Greenest. Looks like it’s time to pay off that debt.

2. When an orc raid drove your family from your home, the people of Greenest took you in. Anyone who threatens Greenest is your sworn enemy.

thamp thamp thamp

As dawn broke the sounds of life flooded from the High Forest. The cool air and clear skies were a welcome reprieve to the recent storms but the Evermoor Way was a rutted muddy mess nonetheless. Bor awoke at the base of a giant oak tree where he could sleep without easily being seen from the road.

Bor circled the base of the tree raising his arms to the sky, stretching his entire frame. thamp thamp thamp thamp thamp thamp He lowered his head with an exhale and opening his eyes he noticed a young boy with a small sack running down the way. The boy was clearly in a hurry but not running from but maybe to something. Bor lowered his arms and continued to watch as the youth passed him and came to a sliding stop.

They locked eyes and the child pulled a piece of paper from his waistband. Glancing between the page and Bor the boy slowly began to walk towards the edge of the forest. He couldn't have been older than 12 and maybe 5 times that in weight.

"You should know better than to be out on the road alone boy."

Bor just thought he had been on a morning errand from Everlund but when he approached the dirt of long travel caking his clothes made him think otherwise.

"I'm looking for someone. I was told I could find him beyond Everlund south of the Nether Mountains." His breathing was labored as he explained himself. He pulled a waterskin from his crude sack and sipped as he caught his breath. "I'm looking for The Bridge."

"There are many bridges in Everlund. It is the gateway after all." Bor took note of the boys clothing. His look betrayed a more western sensibility. His accent was not much more northern or southern. "Where you from child?"

"My family resides at the outskirts of Daggerford near the Sword Coast on the Shining River. I must be on my way though. I have a duty to fulfill."

"Now hold on a second. My name is Bor. Tell me what could be so important that you've come seeking something you know nothing of." Bor pulled out some spare food from his pack, tore off a half loaf of bread and held it out to the boy.

They sat and talked of long travels and roads and the hardships of both. They talked of farmlands and small towns and adventures. This boy is a good son. Strength lived within him though his frame said otherwise. The boy told a tale of a wandering monk whom his family had taken in one winter night. He had been attacked west of the High Moor and was badly wounded by a pack of monsters. After nursing him back to health the monk would return often in the years to come to pay his respects and offer his services to the farmer and his neighbors.

One day he came asking of a favor. The monk needed a message delivered to a man north of the High Forest. A man they called The Bridge. The boy recalled all the stories he had heard in his youth of this impossibly tall man who plowed fields with his fingers and vanquished oppressors with compelling force. Bor laughed at the elaborate words that spilled forth as the boy animated his story with flailing arms and sound effects.

"Hah, your tales are exaggerated truths at best boy. The finest bards would be hard pressed to sell a better tale though. But I know this monk you speak of. He is familiar to me too. Long ago he saved my life. Let us see this message child! You've found the bridge that can not be crossed."

Bor receives Leosin Erlanthar's message to meet in Greenest. Hope this works, I kind of lost my focus at work.

This is great stuff. Just what I was looking for. Let's play around for a while here, then we'll get the campaign started. Everyone will probably meet up in Phandalin, then we'll discover common grounds, and move to Greenest.

I'll try to get up a post tomorrow to help things roll along.

God Infinity........

All>

Don't forget to roll your 2d10 so we can come up with a background to tie you into the campaign.

I'll also post either tonight...but probably tomorrow some basics on the classes and races you've chosen.

I'll build in one of them tomorrow.

Male 1/2 Elf Eldritch Knight/2, AC 18, Passive Perception 10, HP 21/21, Init +2

background roll: 2d10 ⇒ (10, 4) = 14

I now have in my possession the 5E PHB :D

HP 24/24 INIT: +3 / AC: 14/16(shield) / PassPerc:14 / STR:+5, CON +5

OK, finished my profile [character sheet]

God Infinity........

OK Everybody the whole roll randomly for a connection to the campaign didn't work out too well, as you all plotted to roll the same numbers...so I'll just list them all, and you can choose the one you want. If you've already integrated one feel free to keep it, or choose another.

Spoiler:

3. Every five nights, you have a strange sequence of apocalyptic dreams. The world is destroyed by cold, choking fumes, lightning storms, waves of acid and horrible fire. Each time the dream ends with ten evil eyes glaring at you from the darkness. You feel a strange compulsion to travel to Greenest. Perhaps the answer to the riddle of your dreams awaits you there.

4. Ontharr Frume, a crusading warrior, and champion of good is your friend and mentor. He has asked you to travel to Greenest in search of rumors of increasing dragon activity.

5. You have heard rumors that your close childhood friend, a half-elf named Talis, has been kidnapped by a strange group of dragon cultists. Your investigations into the cult have led you to the town of Greenest. You must save her.

6. Being a grandchild of a renowned dragon slayer is usually a good way to impress people, but just last week a gang of ruffians attacked you. You barely escaped with your life, but as you fled, the ruffians told you that the Cult of the Dragon never forgets and always avenges. You’re hoping to lie low in a sleepy little town called Greenest until this blows over.

7. On his deathbed, your father confessed that he had become involved with a group called the Cult of the Dragon. They paid him to smuggle goods across the Sword Coast. Wracked by guilt, he begged you to investigate the cult, and undo the evil he may have helped foster. He urged you to begin your search in a town called Greenest.

8. The dragons destroyed everything you hold dear. They killed your family and destroyed your home. Now, with nothing but what you carry on your back and a horrid scar of the near fatal wounds you sustained in the attack, you seek revenge.

9. You and your family were members of the Cult of the Dragon, until you rivals in the cult arranged to wipe you out. Though they slaughtered your kin, you survived, but they think you’re dead. Now is your chance for vengeance! Your hit list consists of three names: a human cultist named Frulam Mondath, a half-orc named Bog Luck, and a half-dragon named Rezmir. You have arrived in Greenest, knowing it’s next on cult’s list of targets.

10. You have a secret. You were once a Gold Dragon who served Bahamut. You were too proud and vain, to the point that Bahamut decided to teach you a lesson. You have been trapped in a weak, humanoid body, with your memories of your former life, but a dim shadow. You remember only one thing with perfect clarity: Bahamut’s command to go into the world and prove your devotion to the cause of good. If you prove worthy, on your death you will return to his side in your true form.

Righty ho.

I've started the process of completing Zennor's profile. If the phb has anything not in the basic rules, let me know.

I took one of the background hooks that I rolled to send Zennor to Greenest.

Cheers

Good job guys, the plan worked!

#5 strikes me as best for Vano.
Having no family to speak of, his friends are everything to him. If Tanis's story doesn't allow for her to grow up in Mistshore, Vano's story can be reset anywhere, as long as there's room for an orphan to learn to steal.

This kit is not detailed in the PHB. Feel free to improvise (Chisels, Hammers, planes, files Sandpaper, stain, turpentine???.

God Infinity........

Here is the list of gods with "Life" as a domain. Zennor...feel free to choose one. You can find more details in the Forgotten Realms Wiki.

  • Helm, God of Protection (LN)
  • Ilmater, God of Endurance(LG)
  • Lathander, God of Birth and renewal (NG)
  • Liliira, Goddess of Joy (CG)
  • Sulune, Goddess of the Moon (CG)
  • Sune, Goddess of love and beauty (CG)

God Infinity........

So we have:

  • Bor Bersk - Human, Fighter (Folk Hero)

  • Dorn - ? Hunan,Bard (Criminal)
  • Tycandus - Half-Elf, Fighter/ Eldritch Knight (Soldier, Folk Hero)
  • Zennor - Dwarven, Cleric of Life (Soldier-healer)

I'll post this weekend with a starting post + the following.

Anything else needed to get started?

HP 24/24 INIT: +3 / AC: 14/16(shield) / PassPerc:14 / STR:+5, CON +5

If I survive and reach 3rd level before I get my book I'll play as a champion. It's so full of passive bonuses tho it might be boring. So I'm still holding out that battle master is better suited.

I took Berronar Truesilver as the dwarven Mother of Safety and initial religion. Then Ontharr Frume and the Temple of Lathander is the faith that Zennor will visit as she travels the lowlands and towns. She is neutral good.

Cheers

Hi guys. Great start.

Things have went cukoo here at work, so I probably won't be able to update till tomorrow evening, but keep up the introductions and I'll roll with what you guys come up with.

PS: We might have a few encounters on the road to Greenest just to try out some parts of the system, but they won't account for experience except for the players, not the characters.
