Sense Motive: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8 Yasmin suspects there's more to this story than it seems and tries to see if he gives anything away. Though it was not one of her particular gifts to discern such lies.

"We were worried about you - traveling the roads alone is dangerous in these times. I'm glad to see you're safe. What took you away so urgently?"

"Anyway, Rallos has another map of the Spire for your use. But, before we get to that, what has your investigation of the teleportation crystal turned up?"

"I thank you for your concern...but I have travelled these roads for many years - it will take much more than a gaggle of cutpurses to stop me now. Ah, yes...now why was I away? Oh yes, I was over at Thornkeep - I have a few friends who looked at your little crystal for me"

Pulling the green vial from a velvet pouch, he hands it back to Yasmin, "Quite the artefact you have there...we've been through the archives and found little of comparison - it's Azlanti arcana for sure...and undoubtedly it's teleportation. So, we think it's probably triggered by a word or phrase - and, this is the strange thing, it is definitely keyed into the spire - you have to be in contact with the spire when you use it. Tell me, you have seen the spire crystal on a few levels now - were there any distinguishing marks upon it? Any carvings or etchings? Maybe something that would distinguish what level you are at?"

Yasmin respectfully receives the offered crystal in both hands, taking a good look at it to make sure it's the same one she gave. It was probably paranoia, but just in case . . . Detect magic.

"Hm, well now that you mention it, we ran across these scrolls with mysterious symbols on them in the various levels. I'd totally forgotten about them, but maybe there's some connection? I should've thought to show you these sooner." Yasmin digs a scroll tube out of her bag and reveals the odd scrolls they had discovered previously.

Yasmin - the same conjuration aura that previously enveloped the glass cylinder is still there.

Royst looks impressed when Yasmin shows the parchments, ”Now that is something you don’t see too often…it seems to be a very particular dialect of Azlanti – almost a precursor to the Thassilonian tongue”. First taking the scroll that is marked with ‘Four’ in the common tongue, ”Seems that someone had a degree of success in translation of this rune…this is indeed the character for ‘Four’…you pronounce it like this…” – Royst then utters a phrase full of Vee’s and rolling Arrr’s – encouraging you to practice it, Royst peers over the second scroll. ”Hmmm, this one appears to be the number ‘Six’…again, practice makes perfect”, Royst teaches you to pronounce the phrase – this one with more Ex’s than you would think sensible.

”If you are holding the cylinder and touching the spire – incanting the phrase should , and I emphasise ‘should’, teleport you to a specific location. I don’t think the cylinder has enough power to teleport all four of you though – I would guess that it would be potent enough for a maximum of two people”

Wishing Pertreeko had decided to follow along to the Fort after all! He would have loved to learn about the teleportation properties of the cylinder, and would have guessed it transported you directly along the ley-lines running throughout the planet's crust!

  • I'm assuming Gray isn't with Yasmin at Royst's place.

Grayface kicked up his feet on the empty chair next to him. His 2nd mead went down faster than the first, and he'd soon be waving down the barman for 3rd. The Julliver was becoming his preferred hangout, and this table by the hearth was becoming his preferred spot to hang out. He was trying hard to think about the plentiful coin in his purse, his new friend Pertreeko out in the cold woods, and mentally undressing the attractive woman who sat alone at a table nearby... yet his mind kept wandering back to the Spire.

That place... We've cleaned out so much evil there and yet there is little sense of satisfaction. There remains this gnawing feeling that we've only scratched at the surface of the cancerous darkness that is so deeply entrenched at that ancient site.

"Ah, my thanks," he said when his food arrived. The hot meaty soup and cornbread would do him well. It was much better than the bruised apples, stale bread and jerky he subsisted on outside of these walls.

Gray will pay for a room for the night, dinner and drinks, and await his friends' arrival at the Julliver. He is ready to depart back to the spire when everyone else is ready.

Yasmin struggles to intone the different words, a Kelish accent glossing thickly over the Vees, Arrs and Exs. "What a ridiculous language," she huffs, frustrated. Taking out a pen and paper, she writes the words out in a way that makes sense to her, and practices it over and over, until she gets it. But some other ideas come to her.

"Say, what would happen if I were to say another number, like "one"? Do you think that would work too? If so, I'd like to learn the numbers from one to six. Also, how often can we use this crystal? Once a day? As many times as we want? It would be great if we could just ferry everyone into the same location, having someone teleport back and forth with a friend."

"I'd really like to be able to tell you how to teach you the numbers...but the dialect is too obtuse - you're going to have to find some more of these scrolls I suppose... Come back here and I'll help you with the pronounciation of course"

"Now, did you have a map for me as well?"

When Rallos offers the latest map, Royst grins like a child with a new toy, "Hmmm, I wonder if the outlaws fashioned any of this themselves or whether they merely occupied it like a cuckoo takes over a nest? Was it just the brigands or did you encounter anything else?"

As you tell him of the Gibbering Mouther and the Crysmals, he passes you three hundred gold as a reward, "A fine map, thank you..."

"Hmmm, I suppose you could ferry people backwards and forwards with a single crystal - but you'd have to be sure you could make the return trip before you teleported down... And, is there a chance the crystal could run out of power? Hmmmm, I doubt it - I think the power is drawn from the Spire itself...but....these things are old...ancient even - might they break with repeated use? I wouldn't bet against it..."

  • The map payment is 60 gold each, so I'm assuming that gets split right away. GM - is it ok for me to purchase a potion of Enlarge Person from Sefurd's? At CL1 that is 50 gp per book price. Is that cool?

Assuming that is ok, Grayface grew somewhat bored of his mug and decided to take a walk around the Fort, hoping to find something interesting to catch his eye. It was not a big place but it was efficiently laid out. Before long he passed a shop with a peculiar acrid odor in the air, so his curiosity got the better of him. Stopping inside he met Sefurd and learned of his magical potions for sale.

After a brief discussion about combat-related magical aid, the fighter parted with 50 gold coins in exchange for a potion that would turn him into a giant for short period of time. His imagination ran wild with the mental image of himself towering over his foes, chopping them asunder with mighty blows from his giant sword. It gave him goose pimples up his arms. I think High Mother Dremagne, head of the Abbadar's temple, might be able to cure your disease, Rallos. At a cost, of course. You'll have to wait for her to pray to her god first, that would delay our next travel to the Spire for a day, maybe two. And the spell, as far as I know, doesn't work everytime, I must warn you. If you don't mind a little side-investigating while my compatriots are away...

"It's time to take wing as I, our species, was always meant to," Pertreeko says, as he rises from his crosslegged seated position. He had been meditating for hours on the profound knowledge of wild shape that he had gained through contemplation.

He allows the change to take over his body fully, shapeshifting into a Raven. His face changes little other than shrinking in size...his hands become wings, his body shrinks, his feet become talons...and he takes to the skies. For the first time in his life Pertreeko is flying, and it's under his own wing-power.

He's in wild shape for 4 hours that day. The first hour is getting used to flying, and reveling in the new experience. The remaining three are spent flying around the Crystal Spire, examining it closely from the outside and noting any movement or changes since last he saw it.

    Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8

Well, I guess I don't see squat. Good thing that 1 roll didn't happen in combat...

The doors to the temple of Abadar are open when you make your way to it in the warmth of the late morning – fortunately there are no services in progress and the High Mother is able to see you. Instantly seeing Rallos’ plight, she looks deep into his eyes…looking for something that the irises or pupils might tell her…turning to Ea, she suggests the cause of Rallos’ developing condition, ”Ghoul Fever? It’s nasty as well - it’s taken hold of him… tell me Pharasmin, are you able to cure him?”

Ea has, so far, never been truly able to relate to people, to understand their emotion. Focused on the dead-or the undead-she never tried to decypher the clues of body langage from the living.

But her sheer instinct, and perhaps the fact that she is slowly "warming up" to her friends, helps her to understand that Dremagne knows that she already has the upper hand.

So the Pharasmin doesn't bother with subtility, and goes straight for the facts, even if she's less blunt than usually.

I wouldn't have dared to disturb the highest ranking servant of the Master of the First Vault if I was able to cure my friend's disease. A burial would surely cost less, but I guess Rallos would enjoy to become healthy again and continue to live, even at a cost. The price is yours to decide, I trust your wise judgment on the amount. We know that it will be an honest price. There's, after all, no reason to ruin a valuable future customer, someone who could need your services again and again, paying each time, and who's risking his life and health to fight evil and wild creatures so the roads to the Fort are safer and this place can live long and prosper.

The High Mother smiles, ”Honeyed words Pharasmin – and well said too. Of course it is in the interest of the Church, and indeed the town, for your tiefling friend here to remain in the land of the living. I will pray for Rallos this evening and, on the morrow, we shall see whether Abadar favours him…as to payment, let’s call it a favour on this occasion – you have proved yourselves worthy allies already. It is a poor thing to bankrupt those who would further the cause of the Master of the First Vault”

If you have anything further to do in Fort Inevitable today – you can RP it out otherwise we can roll the clock on to tomorrow (and another Fortitude Save from Rallos prior to an appointment with the High Mother)

Having friends meant having a weakness, and that was difficult for the hard man to accept. He was about to walk away from his friend's sickbed and more to the point, his new feelings of worry. Instead he decided to face them head on by spending time with Rall. He brought in fresh water to drink, a hot meal, and a strawberry pastry for good measure.

For what it's worth, I believe Rallos does not suffer any ill effects for a successful save vs ghoul fever, even if the disease needs multiple saves to overcome. Rather, bad things happen only on failed saves. At least, that's my reading of the following, from the PRD:

    PRD wrote:
Effect: This is the effect that the character suffers each time if he fails his saving throw against the affliction. Most afflictions cause ability damage or hit point damage. These effects are cumulative, but they can be cured normally. Other afflictions cause the creature to take penalties or other effects. These effects are sometimes cumulative, with the rest only affecting the creature if it failed its most recent save. Some afflictions have different effects after the first save is failed. These afflictions have an initial effect, which occurs when the first save is failed, and a secondary effect, when additional saves are failed, as noted in the text. Hit point and ability score damage caused by an affliction cannot be healed naturally while the affliction persists.

Rallos heads to the outside if the gate to look for Pertreeko to bring him up to speed on his recent ailment.

Ea's prayers provide further aid to Rallos, his litheness and his fortitude returning to him with the priestess' Pharasmin guidance. With the spring back in his step and a break in the weather, it seems that the stars have aligned to allow a return to the Spire.

Just pushing you along a little to get you back to adventuring...

Gathering their stuff, the group bid their farewells to the folks in the Julliver and head north into the woods - meeting their druid friend - albeit a day late, reacquaintances are made while the five adventurers trudge through the snow...

...before you know it, the spire looms before you - the green glass glinting in the sunlight that is cutting through a lingering mist...

Plans? Returning to the Splinter's level? Anything you wish to further do there or heading further down?

If we are done with the Splinter's level, we should try to go deeper.

Yeah I think we explored it pretty thoroughly. Down, down, down we go. Just like our recent exit, we should enter through the goblin's level and make our way down.

With my new rank in Linguistics, I should choose a new language. Would it be ok to take Azlant, or would I need someone to teach me? If not allowed (at this stade of the story or forever), I'll take Draconian

Let's see if our avian friend is fine, then we'll go deeper in the Spire, and conquer any challenge, if such is our Fate.

Well let's see what mysteries lie ahead of us beyond this door....

Rallos checks the door for any traps or alarms, his distrust of the bandits the cause of his cautiousness.

    perception: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (5) + 10 = 15

Confident he does not find any traps, he opens the door quietly....

Plodding the familiar territory of the Tower Ruins and Gorloth's Cellars, you find yourselves at the Splinter's hideout in no time... Rather than patrolling through it, and confident that it lies silent and empty, you use the handle in the guardpost to raise the bars that previously prevented you gaining access to the Spire crystal - and the stairs that lead ever downwards...

Moving past another Azlanti symbol etched into the crystal... Similar in it's elegance to the others that you have previously seen marked on the emerald - and the two that you have scrolls of - you take a copy of it and descend...

    Down... Down... Down...

After a hundred feet or so of descent, you start to notice an acrid, nauseating reek filling the air - a musky reptilian stench. Whilst it isn't yet overpowering, the party continues into the depths - and rounding the final spiral, arrive in a small chamber of smooth, hewn stone lit by a greenish light emanating from two strange, torchlike devices attached to the wall. A metal door with a simple latch mechanism glows with a dim green light in the middle of the northern wall. The walls and the ceiling are decorated in symbols and pictures painted in bright colours - the images are abstract but somehow, also alien and disturbing...

Standing next to the door, dressed in a red leather waistcoat and leaning on a gnarled wooden walking stick stands a dull gray humanoid - it's hide a dull gray. Its frame resembles that of a cave lizard, with a long tail and crests on its head and back.

    Knowledge (Local) DC6:
The creature in front of you is a troglodyte - cave dwelling reptilians, they are savage inhabitants of the underworld...

The creature bows as you turn the corner and, in a voice rich with sibilants, announces, We welcome you to Godhome. You wish to make sacrifice now, or visit? Take holy grub maybe?". Dark black eyes blink at you whilst the creature's tongue flicks the air...

A troglodyte? This one seems less savage than usual...They stink, but I'm used to the odor of the dead... I hope it won't be worse.

Ea stays on her guard, but is careful not to do anything that could sparks a fight

We are peaceful travelers, and know nothing of theses lands of yours. Could you teach us the ways of Godhome? What kind of sacrifice do you speak of?

    Back at ground level...

Pertreeko hollers "Hallooo down there! You all are quite late! Welcome back to the Spire!" and jumps out of a tree that the party had been walking past. He lands with a soft fwump on the leaves and greets his companions once more. The past two days have been exhilarating ones for the druid, and it's clear from his appearance - muddy in places, wild feathers sticking out at odd angles....he notices his disheveled state after one of you stares at him a little too long, and makes a weak effort to smooth down his feathers again.

    Down on the fourth floor...

    Knowledge: Local: 1d20 ⇒ 14

Pertreeko's avian olfactory senses are quite weak, so he isn't very bothered by the stench - but even he notices that the trog smells foul. Still, Pertreeko is not one to judge by outer appearances, so he remains quiet and keeps his preliminary judgments to himself, waiting to see what this creature's intentions were.

Updated character sheet to level 4!

"Sacrifice? ...Yes, sacrifice, give iron-metal to the god-box and it will bless you and send you on your way. All good visitors make sacrifice to the god-box", the troglodyte looks at you expectantly...

Pertreeko turns a curious gaze upon Ea and the others, raising one eyebrow. "God-Box...will you show us?" he asks the trog, politely.

Tell us please, how much of metal would be considered enough? We don't want to insult your god. And may I ask what happen when the Godbox is pleased?

I surely don't want to know what happen if we displease the Godbox. Already got a kind of idea...

Grayface, you see nothing of note

Answering Yasmin, the troglodyte tells you a little more, "Skraa-orm thagh, the God in the Box, It is very powerful!!! We are all followers, Woman Human... It makes us 'Holy Grub' and keeps us safe from machine men of down below...Savisk is priestess of Skraa-orm thagh - the God talks to us through her"

When Yasmin offers up the dagger, the troglodyte stands slightly more erect and, in a voice full of reverence, "You are ready to make sacrifice? Yes?", and responding to Pertreeko, "I will show you...yes? Take you to Skraa-orm thagh, yes?"

"Other Woman Human, only the God in the Box can decide whether your offering is suffice...but, if you please Skraa-orm thagh, he will let you pass through to the chambers below. That is what you want yes? All good peoples have wanted to see those chambers... Maybe they go to fight the metal men?"

Yasmin - you don't detect any magical auras.
