As Ea heals her wounds, Tot comes out of her daze and asks Gray to put her down. After finding her helm, she realizes that her hair is now a bloody mess.

"Great. it's going to take me forever to redo all of that," she grumbles as she starts to undo the hairdo that her hair had partially come out of. A few moments later, her hair is down and falls well past her waist. "How big of a hurry are we in? I can't fight with it down like this and putting it up will take a while," she asks the others.

It's only then that she realizes that Yasmin has also asked a question and the diminutive fighter feels her face burning crimson.

"Uh, sorry. Could we get a cure potion? Please?"

Just a side note, I've always pictured Tot as having long hair and just kept it up in a really complex bun that was able to fit under her helmet. I didn't decide how long until just now and, well, I dunno. I was thinking that it'd be fun to see how Grayface reacted to seeing that all it'd take for Tot to be a perfect, little princess is a costume swap.

  • Once satisfied that she could stand on her own steam, Gray set her back upon her feet. He laughed at her expense when the bloodied hair was mentioned, though he meant no offense. A man of extremes, the volume of his laughter was typically disproportionate to the levity, as was his anger compared to a provocation.

She was decidedly pretty in spite of the blood-caked hair; he was suddenly picturing her at ease in the finest of garb, twirling in some ballroom with highborn folk. On some level he would always feel like a low class schlub, especially in the presence of classy women such as these that he ventured with. Reminded of the truth they were equals in most ways that counted, he silently noted that he must try his best to put on a mask of indifference next time these feeling of inadequacy surfaced.

Turning back to the situation at hand,
"I don't believe it would be wise to go down that chute unless we had no other option, though the heat would likely not bother me. Have we finally reached the bottom of the Spire? I do not remember any other passages leading down or into other chambers."

There was a door to the west from the room where the group first encountered the automaton head... I have marked it on the map.

Back in 'the Spa', Titania is quickly attended to by Beauty Two... and is soon immersed within hot water and putting the tribulations of the carnivorous crystal behind her. And, unceremoniously nestled in Grayface's arms, the automaton head speaks, "I suppose we know now what happened to Machinist One... at least they didn't suffer the ravages of the Reclaimers". There is a moments pause after Grayface suggests that they have reached the bottom of the spire and then the head corrects the grizzled warrior, "To the west of the Tearooms... that is the way that leads through to the Iron Creche. You are ready?"

There's three doors that we haven't gone down. We may want to backtrack and see what's behind them and maybe see if something useful is there.

When the others return to the bath hall, they find a red-faced and clearly mortified Tot soaking in the water and doing her best to keep herself covered.

"You couldn't have given me something to wrap up in first," she asks the one-armed Beauty Two as the automaton busies itself with gathering up the scattered pieces of armor and clothing. Her attention isn't on the construct for long as she spots Grayface entering the room. She lets out a squeak and tries to hide in the bath as best she can.

There was no doubt in his mind whether the girls would be a bit uncomfortable in the nude around him but he brushed it off, secure in the false equivalency that beautiful women made him squirm on the inside as well. He would not stare, nor would he avert his eyes completely.

Holding the talking head he moved toward the center of the room and walked by the pools.

When the group are fully prepared, refreshed after their encounter with the crystal - which must have lain dormant in the laboratory for an age, they seek guidance from the automaton head, "You may call me the Steward if a name is useful to you", the inklings of a personality are starting to replace the matter of fact statements that characterised the first interactions, "We should head westwards..."

Back through the room where they were first received into the automaton's chambers, the Steward guides Grayface towards an unassuming wooden door - one thing the group do notice as they pass through is that the painted image on the southern wall has changed, whereas it previously portrayed a wizard in combat with an impressively proportioned dragon, it now displays a crowned man atop a mountain looking down upon a cloud obscured landscape that extends out to sea. If any of the group think to mention this to the Steward, he replies somewhat disinterestedly, "The Prince constructed many such artefacts to portray his magnificence to the world... I'm afraid that after a millennium of watching the vignettes that their appeal has faded".

Moving through the door to the west, the group move into a small kitchen opens into an aquaponics chamber. The smells of unfamiliar plants are heavy in the warm, damp air. The tanks are filled with water, vegetation, small fish, and shellfish whilst, attached to the tanks, are facilities for transforming the contents into meals.

A door to the south has been barricaded and there is an audible metallic - and tremendously persistent - noise through that door, like dozens of blades scraping against it. One of the serving automatons has followed the group... and at the noise coming from the door, starts to fret, "If the reclaimers were to get through... if they were to get past our barricade then all would be lost"

After a brief and embarrassing few moments, Tot's dressed and decent.

"Uh, Yasmin, my armor's mithral. is shouldn't be that heavy," she says as she head over to pick up on of the pieces. It doesn't weigh any more than it had.

"If you can help with the hair, I can don my armor without trouble."

A few minutes pass and Tot is once again dressed for battle and scurrying to catch up with the others.

    ===

As she removes her sword from the harness on her back, Tot rolls her shoulders to moves to test the limits of her motion, thankful that the helm hides her wince when she twists just right to aggravate a wound in her side where the crystal creature had managed to slip under the plates of her armor. She could move well enough and she took up a point position.

"Well, I hope this goes better than last time," she says as she gets ready to begin the counterassault.

Is there only one way through or is there another door somewhere?

Or you push them back and I shut them down... the barricade here has held them for longer than I expected but, in enough time, they'll get through. They are adaptable... but they are mechanical at heart - clockwork..." The steward's next words are poorly chosen, "...superior"

The green rectangles are the tanks - and can't be occupied without all sorts of squeezing!!! But, for the purposes of making the combat interesting, we can say the pool is around a foot deep and people can stand in it with no penalty (although it would be difficult terrain for moving)...

The steward is almost indignant at Yasmin's question - even though she had been diplomatic - but it somehow manages to respond calmly, "In times past, the Sanctum and the Iron Creche worked in unison... our programming is formed of the same components - I have maintained the code of the Sanctum's staff for an age, I am confident that I can work with the Iron Creche". There is a pause, and then a somewhat self-superior tone, "The Iron Creche has always been a matter of strength over intelligence... the emerald automatons simply follow instructions, and the reclaimers are nothing more than an iteration of that. They simply don't have the capability to reprogram the Sanctum's staff..."

Ea recalls a few basic traits of constructs whilst her companions are busy dismantling the barricade, and Rallos is setting up some form of trap with the items stripped from around the door - constructs, which the reclaimers must surely be, are immune to mind-affecting effects - they are immune to diseases and poisons - and sleep effects - in short, they are resilient to all of things which a biological being is resilient towards. The Steward, rested upon a ledge whilst Grayface works, acknowledges Ea's observations - although it is quite clear that there is a hint of self-superiority about these facts...

As the last of the large chunks of barricade are taken away, and Rallos pulls them upwards in a net and pulley affair, the anticipatory scraping at the door suddenly stops... in the ominous silence, the serving automaton who had been nervous about the prospect of opening the door - and of letting the reclaimers into the chamber - rattles and shuffles out of view...

As ready as they will ever be, Grayface eases the door open... the walls and floor of the short hallway beyond ripple as if alive — every surface of this hallway is covered with a wave of tiny constructs. They look like they were originally beetle-shaped, but have incorporated pieces of junk into their construction and are now heavily covered in rusted protrusions.

Going to be an evil GM and say that swarms can't be damaged by weapon attacks... hopefully there's enough area attack capability within the group!!!

Waiting on actions from Titania and Rallos

Memories of tiny, crawling legs bring Tot almost back to a panic as she kicks a few of them off and backpedals and searches her pack for anything that might help. Those that were with her in the tomb of Yarrix can see a frighteningly familiar look in Tot's eyes. It was the same one that was there when she was desperately trying to hack her way out of that place.

    Withdraw!

Yup, me thinks we's not ready for this fight.

Apologies for slowness in posting - it was a very busy weekend and I couldn't get onto the boards yesterday (the ubiquitous purple goblins tangled up in a computer picture!!!)... anyways, moving us along...

Edit: and I try and post this at lunchtime today (Tuesday)... and goblins again!!!

Rallos and Titania can only watch in horror as thousands of mechanical insects burrow out from the wreckage of Rallos' trap and, clicking and clacking, start to envelope Grayface's legs...

Grayface takes 1d6 ⇒ 4 Swarm Damage and must make a Fort Save DC12 to avoid exposure to disease.

    Everyone may act now.

    I assume there's also a DC for swarm distraction/nausea?

"Gray, get out of there, I'm going to torch them!" As soon as Grayface gets out, Yasmin shoots fire into the space he was standing.
    Burning Hands: 5d4 ⇒ (1, 1, 2, 3, 2) = 9 13 damage against the swarm. Although the fire is not the most effective.

"Spread out so they can't cover us all!" Yasmin begins to scatter.

Numerous were their number and their bites, easily overcoming the obstacles before them to reach at least one foe slow enough to remain in their path. He felt a twinge of pain as they crawled up his leg but thought of little more than getting away from them before they enveloped him completely.

The warrior deftly hopped away, turning to toss a vial of alchemist's fire into the swarm's midst.

    "C'mon! Hurry!"

Tot skids to a halt just beyond the doorway from the room and waves for the others to follow her and Yasmin.

    Rallos and Ea withdraw

Yasmin's fire flows through the swarm, fragments of soot exploding from the thousands of insect like machines as they flare brightly in the heat... yet, as the flames subside, the size of the rolling and boiling mass seems utterly unchanged (Immunity to Magic... oh my!!!!) Grayface's fire has a little more impact, even though it nearly slips from his hand as he tosses it...

Hmmmm... I'm thinking that this swarm is a chastening experience but I don't want to send you scurrying back to Fort Inevitable!!!! Time for a change in approach... and a more conventional foe :)

Slowing down now that it is within the Sanctum, the swarm starts to coalesce - where once was a formless blanket of moving metals, now stands a whirring quadruped... shaped not unlike a hound of some form, it crouches menacingly as the last of the tiny fragments click into place along its limbs.

He stumbled over his word choice while drawing his blade. The raging heart within the sword began to thud loudly, echoing the fast beating adrenaline-rushed heart that beat within Grayface's chest. The fighter moved right back along the path he had just used to retreat from the swarm, darting forward to engage the metal monstrosity with his hungry steel blade.

    Acid could also work.

Tot calms down a bit, but she's still cautious of the thing. It could just disassemble itself and swarm them again, and she is not eager to feel their sting.

Still, if it was so obliging, she would be rude not to take the opportunity to whack it a few times. Figuring it best to take it down quickly, she rushes around with her magically enhanced speed and flanks it with Grayface.

    Attack (Power Attack, Flank): 1d20 + 17 + 2 + 1 - 3 ⇒ (18) + 17 + 2 + 1 - 3 = 35
    Crit?: 1d20 + 17 + 2 + 1 - 3 ⇒ (20) + 17 + 2 + 1 - 3 = 37 I believe so.
    Damage: 4d6 + 16 + 18 ⇒ (6, 2, 2, 4) + 16 + 18 = 48 And adamantine, so DR 20 or less is moot!

Also, She provokes an AoO for movement, but she can move up to 60 feet, so she can definitely make it to where she is. I'm jsut banking on her AC 26 and 64 HP being enough to keep it from dropping her.
