Reminder for next round--everyone but Grayface has Haste up.
"Grayface! Is that really you?" Yasmin hardly believed it when she heard his voice, but seeing him in person once more makes it undeniable. "Here's a reminder of old times!" The sorceress uses the metamagic rod to bend a blade of ice more powerful than any of them had ever seen, targeting the armor. Maximize metamagic rod, Rime Spell Freezing Arc.
60 damage at the armor, Reflex DC 18 for half. I don't know if going after the armor means giving up the Entangle effect, and I also think energy blasts only do half damage to objects?
GM Zed |
The diminutive hellknight, if she was still such, and the grizzled warrior make a good account of themselves - their weapons crunching into, and through, the undead's frost hardened armour. Worse for the raised knight, Yasmin heeds Ea's words... and uses her magicks to embrittle the armour that once declared the hellknight as servant of Asmodeus...
I don't think the Armour gets a Reflex Save per se... so it hits and, getting past the object hardness, does some damage. Equally though, I think targeting the armour specifically means giving up the Entangle.
Hellknight Armour, object damage halved - 30 damage. Armour has 12 Hardness, 55HP... Armour now has 37HP

With Grayface causing the gravest of the hits that struck it, the Graveknight focusses it dread attention upon him...

His life would be snuffed out by another blow like those, raining down upon him like a smith's hammer working out the slag. Left with little choice but a defensive retreat, he moved backward with his sword poised for a parry, then ran for the priestess who had saved his life so many times before.
"Ea! I need you! Thank Pharasma you're here!"

I kind of feel like you should be allowed a reflex save to avoid having your armor damaged by a spell as long as you're wearing it. It's kind of like casting Grease on a weapon someone's holding. It's different if it's just a stationary object. Really, I guess it's just an unusual situation because I'd normally never target equipment with spells.
Yasmin feels fearful as the graveknight nearly cuts through Grayface with its blows. She really, really hoped Ea was onto something when she talked about the creature's armor. Unrelenting in her determination, ice flows without break from her hands, focused through the metamagic rod.
30 frost damage to the armor once more.
Titania Olivia Thrune |
Titania gives the undead knight a ferocious grin at Ea's advice. Adamantine was far tougher and held a far sharper edge than steel. The tiny swordswoman turns into a dervish as she slashes to tear up the armor as much as possible.

Saving his thanks for a better time, the rage-driven fighter wove back into the fray amongst his friends, darting through the deep snow like a winter rabbit. His massive curved blade's heart beat louder and louder as he stepped closer to death -

Nope - Haste only allows an extra attack... it's not a full extra Standard Action (although you can use Hero Points for such shenanigans!!!)

Well... I think two crits, in conjunction with a pretty meaty hit, are enough to end this particular dance!!!
Titania's first blow spears a devastating split into the knight's armour, and as she pulls the blade clear, the crack grows and multiplies - a spider's web of fractures that pop and crack as the chest plate is utterly sundered. Seeing her opportunity, Titania ducks under the swinging blade and cuts upwards... her sword cuts through dead skin, through re-animated muscle and into bone.
Its dead eyes fixed on Titania, the hellknight grapples at the blade wedged into its chest... trying to pull itself free, the abomination jerks once, twice and then no more... slumping backwards with Titania's blade still trapped inside it, it crashes into the snow and, as if being reclaimed by nature, is delicately sprinkled by the falling snow.
Combat Over
Yasmin al Akbar |
As the undead creature falls, Yasmin finally exhales. In the throes of facing this newfound threat, it seemed Yasmin had forgotten to breathe, fearing for the safety of Grayface. "Phew. Another dangerous battle where we come out victorious! Just like old times, Gray!"
Stepping through the snow, she approaches the large warrior, offering him a warm embrace. "What are you doing here? I feared we would never cross paths again. I suppose nearly a year has passed, though. Does this mean you succeeded in your mission? Have you returned to plumb the depths of the Emerald Spire once more?"
As she speaks the words, the sorceress has to fight back the urge to cry, tears of sadness and joy. "So much has changed here, Gray, mostly for the worse. Lady Commander Druvost has been supplanted by someone who, believe it or not, is even worse, Maralictor Wolfhelm. Abenard Royst is missing, believed to be in the Spire. And Murassa . . . poor Murassa succumbed to madness in an evil place and walked away into an extradimensional space. Seeing you again is a reminder of better days, and a hope that what has been lost will be restored." At the end, Yasmin feels a little embarrassed, resting so much on the reappearance of an old friend.
Grayface |
Grayface lowered his pulsing blade when it was clear that the undead thing was no more. Dropping Gorloth's Fury into the snow he slumped forward with his hands on his knees to catch his breath, patting the hellknight on the back of her armor, then looked around to see the rest of his old friends.
"Strange fortunes keep causing our paths to cross. Yes I was very successful. Not a single slave lord from the camp of my youth yet lives. The camps I found this time have been sacked, with every employee slain and every slave freed. There were no match for me, for they knew not the depths of my hatred for them and their masters. Like wheat before the scythe they fell." A strained half-smile cross his face at the fond memory. "Their coffers were emptied and given to the those who had earned the money. The belongings of the fallen were taken up by my freed brethren as well, though I did find some spoils of my own." He looked down admiringly at the breastplate he wore, gilded with gold and platinum accents with scenes of battle embossed on nearly every open space.
"I arrived here some days ago but the gate watch denied me. They threatened to arrest me after I insisted they speak to the Lady Commander, and so I've camped out here while deciding what to do. I thought about scaling the wall with my grappling hook, but it was a foolish idea without knowing what was going on inside. This morning I decided to head toward the Spire in hopes of finding you all outside the Fort's walls, and I am glad that I did."
When he heard Murassa's fate a shadow darkened his brow, which deepened with the news of Royst's disappearance. "There is work to be done then," was all he managed to offer in spite of his more complex inner feelings on the matters.
He turned toward the hellknight woman, the one who had essentially taken his place when he was called away to action. He studied her but gave up on the scrutiny in favor of simple logic - she was here, she was with his friends, and she was doing battle alongside them. That was what mattered. If they trusted her then so would he.
"Well met, again."
Titania Olivia Thrune |
Titania staggers over to the others, her blood staining the snow crimson and leaving a streak behind her.
"Ea? He got me good," she says before losing her grip on her sword and collapsing to her knees.
"I'm sorry Grayface. I wasn't good enough to do as you asked," she says after she pulls off her helm and looks the stout warrior in the eyes. Her expression is pained and it's clear that the graveknight nearly felled her with that pair of heavy blows. "There is work, but also tales to be told. Is there a place we can talk and tend our wounds?"
GM Zed |
Surveying the area, it seems that there is a navigable trail into the Echo Woods - and hopefully to the Spire - and away from the sparely wooded valley where Grayface was attacked by the risen Hellknight and its cadre of zombified minions. Following it, more to get away from the stench of rot than anything else, the friends soon find themselves in a more hospitable clearing... the expansive bowers of several oaks have stopped the snow from piling too high here, and it is as good a place as any to stop and tend to wounds, to catch up with old friends and to plan their next moves...
Ready whenever you are to move onwards and into the Spire - fyi, I plan to handwave a quick exploration of the Tomb of Yarrix... most of the level was explored in the first visit and I'd like to move you quickly on to a brand new level :)
Yasmin al Akbar |
"I have some magics that can help your wounds," shares Yasmin, as she takes out a wand. "It is fueled by the blood of devils, and will allow your wounds to close over minutes. Not as miraculous as the instantaneous magics of clerics, but useful enough. If you don't mind working with such magics, of course."
With approval, Yasmin will heal her allies. 1x charge on Grayface, 5x charges on Titania.
While the wounds knit and the party begins to plan, Yasmin tells all she can about the events of the past. Concluding with this tidbit. "There's less to tell than you might imagine, Gray. Last spring, we were teleporting through the Spire as usual when we were suddenly caught in the Spire by a being, one that seemed to transcend space and time. It was a malevolent creature, quite sure of its superiority, claiming it was waiting for the return of its people to rule Golarion. After Ea offended it by reminding it that it was still mortal, the creature kicked us out of the spire, only 9 months into the future! That is why we are here, with little progress to show for our time. I think unfortunately we'll be needing to take the many stairs up and down in the future."
Ea Zalinsel |
I could have said worse to offend him. Believe me. Pharasma will claim his soul, sooner or later. It wasn't meant as an offense, but sometimes people have an hard time facing the truth. I've seen street orphans accepting Pharasma embrace with more courage that this pseudo self-titled demigod.
Yasmin al Akbar |
Yasmin nods in agreement. "Indeed, Ea was just stating the obvious. It was the creature that chose to take offense, afraid to admit that it was not truly all-powerful."
Rallos Therinor |
Gray, your mug is the last thibg I thought I would see when I came through that fog...but I'm glad to see you. Now we can get down to sone serious business. Between you and Titania here, just about any foe will surely fall. Rallos says, a huge grin on his face as he slaps Gray on the back. This...being in the Spire...very weird. When we came back and saw snow I was about to question my sanity...but now knowingbwhatvwe know, we're prepared...for the most part I reckon.
Titania Olivia Thrune |
"Bleh, that spell always leaves a funny aftertaste in my mouth," Tot complains after the spells have run their course. Her skin isn't as pale as it was right after the fight.
"Now that we've covered what happened while we were apart, can we please get going? The snow's starting to soak my clothes and I'd rather get dry sooner than later."
Another thing I didn't know about Tot before I started playing her. She hates snow and really cold weather.
Grayface |
Sorry for not posting yesterday. I was feeling ill.
His brow furrowed as Yasmin discussed this being in the Spire and the notion of being moved forward in time. In spite of the craziness he had witnessed it seemed far fetched, and yet he had little choice other than to believe it was truth. Grayface had heard of magic users that destroyed armies, led nations, and even pursued endless life... but time travel? He couldn't fathom the depths from which someone must draw their power to accomplish such a feat.
The fighter examined his closed wounds and wiped the spilled blood from his shirt and armor, happy to be again in the company of such marvelous magic power - both divine and arcane. Seeing his friends together again, he knew they were capable of almost anything they set to task.
"Guess I won't get to enjoy an ale next to hearth while admiring our dragon's head hanging at the Julliver any time soon. To the Spire then."
He lifted the broken corpse and wiped the ancient bits of flesh off of his sword onto whatever strips of clothing remained intact, then wrapped his sword in leathers across his back with a look of determination.
GM Zed |
Fort Inevitable seems farther away than ever as the group, having struggled through an intensifying storm, happen upon the Spire Glen. Through the whiteness, the green of the tower ruins can just be seen... with no sign of anything, living or unliving, moving in the clearing around the Spire, the friends move quickly over open ground and into the reassuring shelter of the Azlanti ruins...
The stink left behind by the goblins has mercifully drifted away with time - and the group have time enough, out of the snow, to prepare for the trek downwards. Down and down, they descend... the hike into the darkness punctuated by the occasional scuttling insect but other than the inevitable offering to the 'God in the Box' under the watchful eye of the troglodytes below Splinterden, the trek is a peaceful affair. There are signs though that someone preceded the group on their hike downwards, between each of the levels and chalked elegantly upon the crystal of the spire, an elegant monogram states 'A.R.'
Finally at the opened bronze doors that previously held Yarrix at bay, the friends are near the location of Murassa's strange disappearance...
Actions? Into the quiet Tomb of Yarrix? Or downwards?
Titania Olivia Thrune |
Titania looks into the tomb and her voice quavers as she speaks.
"A-are we going to finish exploring this place? I think we left some doors unopened."
Ea Zalinsel |
I do think we should. Murassa isn't with us any longer, but Grayface is back. We have to process with caution, of course. Being foolhardy only invite us earlier to Pharasma's Eterenal Gardens. Of course, we'll all end there, even me. But I have accepted my Fate with my faith.
Yasmin al Akbar |
Yasmin detects magic, to make sure that the magic once sealing the doors has not returned. She also checks to see if the initials A.R. appear at this level.
"This isn't my favorite place, but we can at least show Gray what we've seen and where Murassa disappeared to. The door behind the mummy's tomb might have something interesting. And there's the off-chance Royst saw this and went inside. He was looking for us, and this is the deepest we managed to go before we disappeared for nine months. I'll keep searching for magic as we go, so we don't walk into some extradimensional space."
Grayface |
The depths at which they had delved to get this far still amazed Gray. At this point he had to imagine the construction was beyond man's ability to manage by conventional means, and so he assumed great magics were employed for the task. His gaze fell upon the bronze doors,
"I get a bad feeling about that place, beyond those doors. You have been here before?"
"Where to now?"
He had his sword unsheathed and at the ready, unsure of what might lay ahead but having a good notion that he'd probably have to put steel through it.
GM Zed |
Looking beyond the crystal of the spire and to the steps that lead downwards, beyond the extent of the friends' exploration, Yasmin sees the insignia that she has seen at the start of each of the staircases into the depths - 'A.R'... it is clue enough that Royst made it this far.
Electing to complete their exploration of the long-sealed tomb, maybe due to a sentimentality and a desire to show Grayface where they lost Murassa, the friends push on the ancient doors and make their way into the corridor beyond. The automaton that greeted the friends the last time they entered the tomb still stands there - whatever energies that once fuelled its movement long since decayed... it is here, where the corridors head to the north and the south of the central lobby that the group last saw Murassa - where, still under the mental befuddlement of the seugathi, Murassa strode into oblivion...
Having paid their respects, the group continue their trek through the tomb of Yarrix... into the central chamber where the blue flame once burnt - but has now sputtered and died - and, having confirmed that there are now seugathi lurking in the northern chamber, the group move in to the mausoleum of Yarrix. The mummy that had been sealed away by Sarenrite worshippers in ages past is decayed to nothing now... and so, with no sign of anything still moving down here - so very far below the surface - the friends push onwards...
The irregular hexagonal chamber beyond the tomb has a sloping floor that rises from its lower northern entrance to its higher southern landing. The floor is carved with a pattern of shallow grooves that fan out to snake across the sloping portion of the floor. Two pillars stand about 20 feet from the northern door - at the top of the sloping chamber, just past the two pillars, is a small landing. Rallos sees it first, pressure plates that indicate a trap... yet, when he tests it, it is long since failed...
Tentatively moving onwards, the group climb the slope and enter a chamber with no floor, only walls and an open pit below. The black and slightly oily walls are riddled with small holes just large enough to fit a hand or arm into. A small landing and a door lie on the opposite side of the pit at the same level. Taking their time, the friends climb across pit... and finally arrive at a strangely shaped chamber.
The walls of the room are carefully smoothed into strange, organic curves, and then rounded in disturbing folds like the contours of a brain. The floor is carved in small channels, like ripples in sand. The remnants of Emerald Automaton lie in the sand... and there, heading to the east, is a secret door that leads back into the central chamber. Having walked through the entirety of the level, the group have seen no life... whatever evils the Sarenrites locked away, so long ago, are defeated and gone...
So onwards?
GM Zed |
Going to go ahead and assume that you folks are heading onwards.
The stairs leading down from the landing become evenly spaced as they progress farther from the tomb; orderly flights that descend 20 feet at each turn for some 400 feet total. The stairs pass several former workshops and strongholds filled with rubble, long ago destroyed and abandoned. Finally, the stairs reach a vertical shaft with an iron ladder running down its side that drops into the darkness... sending light ahead of them, the friends estimate the shaft drops some 200 feet.
Actions? If you are climbing down, who is going first?
Yasmin al Akbar |
"The stairs are very nice here, neatly spaced. They held up nicely even though all these other areas are in disrepair."
Approaching the ladder gives Yasmin pause, though. In addition to sending light, she searches for magic. Detect magic.
"I can see the bottom there, about 200 feet down. Which means I can teleport myself and up to 3 others down there. Obviously, there are 4 of you, so whoever I leave behind I can help them fly, so there's no risk of falling. We could have one person fly, or maybe a pair so nobody has to travel alone. So who wants to be a flier?"
Should there be agreement, Yasmin will cast Fly on those who wish to fly, and Dimension Door the rest of the party down.
Grayface |
I was going to volunteer to climb down first, and I don't want you to blow your spells if it can be avoided, however I have a feeling sh**'s gonna get real from here on out, and we probably need to be prepared for crazy contingencies. I will accept your magic and go explore.
Instantly reminded of the unparalleled experience of flight he had enjoyed in the lava flows some levels above where they fought the dragon, Grayface wanted badly to feel that weightless sensation again.
"I will explore ahead if you would like to use the magic on me."
He looked down the shaft, confident that he could make the climb but suddenly reminded of other myriad dangers they'd experienced along the way. It was a good idea to have Yasmin's suggested magical "safety-net."
Titania Olivia Thrune |
"I think I..." Tot begins to say something but clams up as she looks to her friends and eyes each of them nervously.
"If I tell you something, do you swear, upon your life, not to tell anyone," she asks all of them.
Yasmin al Akbar |
You actually have a pair of devil wings? thinks Yasmin. But she knows better than to start talking about that hidden side of Titania, even as a joke.
"Of course, your secret is safe with us."
Grayface |
After this long and tiring walk the former hellknight suddenly wanted to share a secret?
Grayface nodded in affirmation of his promise, awaiting the coming reveal.
Titania Olivia Thrune |
Rallos, I'm just assuming that you'll agree.
Titania takes in a deep breath, steeling herself for what she was about to do. She knew she could trust them.
"I'm... not human. One of the most closely held secrets that House Thrune has is that the branch of the family I belong to are all tieflings. I can see in the dark, heat nor cold can really hurt me, though I still feel the cold and don't like the snow. If we need someone strong and tough to go first. I should probably go," she says, her words coming out slow and deliberate as if they each weighed heavily on her tongue.
And now the big secret's out.
Titania Olivia Thrune |
Titania shakes her head and bares her teeth to show the small fangs she has.
"Those and my eyes are the only things that give me away," she says. "If anyone found out you know, we'd all be dead. They'd hunt us down like dogs. That's why I wanted all of you to promise me that you'd not tell anyone."
Yasmin al Akbar |
"Don't worry, your secret is safe with us. We've been suspecting for a while now. I actually thought you didn't know, so I was worried about telling you!"
-Posted with Wayfinder
GM Zed |
Thirty feet from the bottom of the shaft that leads to a dimly lit room, the climb - had Grayface not been gracefully flying downwards - becomes challenging. The walls and the ladder’s rungs are coated in thick slime, and in one section the rungs have rusted away entirely...
Grayface, I'll grab a Perception Check please.
Also, fyi, we now have a Level 12 map in the campaign header.
Grayface |
Grayface was utterly underwhelmed by Titania's dark secret. It saddened him to know that their world was so critical, so harsh to one such as she based on her heritage - a thing of which she had no control or input. He had grown up with nothing, from nothing, from a group of people who's status as property outweighed all other details like race or sex; anything else was peripheral and inconsequential. He looked at her no differently now than he had moments ago. If he had learned anything in his days it was to judge people on their actions, and thus far Titania was apparently a good and trustworthy friend, or so his friends had told him - and that was good enough.
---------------
The relatively narrow chute wasn't as easy to fly within as the open lava chamber he had experienced last time. He did his best to keep his eyes and ears open while struggling with his magical flight limitations.

Yasmin doesn't teleport down quite yet. "We'll go when he is about a third of the way down." She waits in anticipation as Grayface slows to observe something.

Descending past the gaps in the ladder, Grayface looks downwards at the approaching floor... at the bottom of the shaft lies a chamber with walls formed from opaque green glass. Something is off though, the light seems refracted somehow... and then Grayface sees it, a membrane quivering some ten feet above the floor. Intrigued, Gray knocks a small stone from the shaft and watches as it is engulfed by the gelatinous cube below him...
Happy for you folks to deal with the cube by whatever RP means you fancy... no need to initiate combat :)

Knowledge Dungeoneering: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (9) + 3 = 12, rolled for RPs sake. Unsure if this is enough to know much of anything.
Seeing the translucent...thing...underneath him, Gray willed himself upward, flying in circles along the walls and pushing with arms and legs to aid in the ascent. Reaching his friends he shared what he saw,
"It's large, clear, and looks like some sort of dungeon ooze. Likely dangerous. I have some oil to burn it but I'm not sure if it will be sufficient due to its size."
