Max shrugs. Seeing as his caginess was not as well received as Omen-Seeker's honesty, he tries for a new tactic.

"There may be further complexities to this situation. You stated yourself that the fuel worked for a period of time. While an illusion may mimic appearance, sound, and maybe even smell, heat and energy cannot be provided by a simple illusion. This artifact may not be all it is hoped to be, but it is clearly powerful if it can maintain this effect whatsoever, and may prove lucrative in it's current state to this impoverished region. As this was sold to you as a 'new kind of drift fuel' and it functioned as fuel for a short time, you may have a bigger problem on your hands. If the expiration period of the fuel provided was not included in your contract, then you did in fact pay credits for a 'new type of fuel' that demonstrably functioned as fuel for a period of time."

With that last sentence, Max is clearly slowly reverting to his 'Buff-Bot classic' personality, although while somewhat monotone, his voice still maintains some human characteristics, unlike his tone during the briefings.

"This brings me to my next concern: Mr. Talbot's popularity. It appears as though this artifact is providing the majority fo this town's economic power. As such, he appears to be like a hero to these people, despite his relatively recent arrival. As a result we have the following situation: You are saddled with a legally binding contract for fuel, which was delivered on, albeit possibly in poor faith on Mr. Talbot's behalf. With Mr. Talbot being held in high regard in this time, and the possibility legal recourse being minimal or nonexistant, AbadarCorp's reputation may be at risk in this region if this were to become known."

Max pauses to let this sink in for a moment before continuing. "There are several positive pieces of data to be acquired from this situation however. As Mr. Talbot only recently arrived on Akiton, his popularity may disappear as quickly as it came." His voice brightens up a bit as he attempts to make an 'insightful comment.' "As it arrived with wealth, so it may depart with wealth."

He adopts a more professional pose and slips more and more into his dull flat voice. "AbadarCorp is a strong and wealthy organization, and the value of it's reputation exceeds the value of any one contract. If you wish to punish Mr. Talbot without harm to your reputation, you must first remove his strengths. He is the prime economic driver to this town, and should he be replaced as such his popularity would too be replaced. For such a task I can only assume that AbadarCorp would be willing to make extremely attractive contracts with the town of Tasch capable of bolstering their economy at a little cost to AbadarCorp. This could reduce their reliance on Mr. Talbot. With his protection gone, exposing his fraud may actually meet your desired goal. As it is our assignment to retrieve this stolen artifact, we would certainly be willing to accept the risk of confrontation with his remaining loyal subjects, thereby giving you the 'punishment' you seek."

There... my stupidly convoluted suggestion to make AbadarCorp the saviors of Tasch so we can jack the stone and book it.

Max looks at his allies, then looks back at the table with the AbadarCorp representatives. This is a huge gamble... and it could go either very very well or very very poorly.

"Unfortunately Talbot may not be the savior you are expecting. What my companion here is saying is not completely accurate, but close to the mark, if I am using the metaphor correctly."

He keeps his hands out where they can be seen and motions for his allies to do likewise.

"The device that Talbot is using was recently stolen from a collection on Absalom Station. That fact in and of itself would not be of concern given his apparent altruistic use of his acquisition, however that which he 'procured' is not what he expected. The fuel which he has been selling has a distinct drawback... it ceases to be fuel within a week and returns to the material from which it was made. This fuel has been sold to a very powerful and wealthy organization, which I am sure wishes to remain nameless for the time being. That organization, which I can assure you we do not represent, now seeks retribution for this perceived fraud. Unfortunately, if my suspicions are correct, they are not the only ones who have received this fuel, and you are likely to face an abnormal amount of dissatisfied customers in the immediate future. We are here to help right as many of these wrongs as possible, and if handled with care, we hope Tasch and Akiton can emerge from this situation better than they entered."

You leave the bar. On the way out, you notice several ysoki who glare at you, but do not attack. You travel to the old thasteron mine. A sloping ramp descends to the west, made of hard-packed red dirt that shows signs of heavy vehicle traffic. The ramp opens into a large square chamber with rough walls. A metal track runs along the ground from a passage in the west wall and then turns north, ascending a five-foot ramp and then running along the north wall until the track terminates. A pair of metal lockers stand in the southeast corner, and a heap of ore is piled to the southwest.

The lockers are locked and can be opened with an engineering or strength check. The tracks are for mine carts.

Shelldrake and Max have no trouble disabling the motion sensor.

Your team moves on and finds another set of dusty tracks branching off into the darkness.

You continue, and find a passage that heads west and then turns north into a T-shaped room. The ceiling is higher than other chambers, cut to fifteen feet in height. Permanent light fixtures set in the ceiling provide brighter light. The minecart tracks that have run throughout this mine hug the south wall, turn north, and run along the west wall before coming to a dead end at the north end of the room. A single mine car stands on the tracks. Across from the cart is a small office fashioned from two out-of-place plastic walls set into the stonework. An open door provides access to the room within a room. Three miners stand around the room, and turn to face you when you enter.
